SWORDS CREEK, Va. -- Virgie Alifair Hubbard, 81, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, in a Tazewell hospital. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late James Lewis and Rosey Louise Osborne. Surviving are a daughter, Ellen Belcher of Pound; three sons, Steve Hubbard of Honaker, and Manuel Hubbard and Tyrone Osborne, both of Swords Creek; two stepdaughters, Nila Genette Bostic of Honaker and Mavis Wingler of Mann, W.Va.; two brothers, Curley Osborne of Cherokee, N.C., and Burley Osborne of Chilhowie; a sister, Gertie Davis of Tazewell; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Singleton Funeral Chapel in Cedar Bluff. The Revs. Leslie Wilson, Jess Whited and Darrell Sutherland will officiate. Burial will be in the Osborne Family Cemetery on Osborne Mountain. Mrs. Hubbard was also preceded in death by four sons; three daughters; a stepdaughter; six brothers; and two sisters. BIG ROCK, Va. -- Eddie Leslie "Bear" Stump, 50, of the Conaway area, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at his home. He was born in New Jersey, a son of the late Edward and Verna Reamer Stump, and had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years. He was a disabled coal miner. Surviving are a daughter, April Stump of Mount Sterling, Ky.; two sons, Jason Stump of Maxie, Va., and David Stump of Decatur, Ill.; six sisters, Barbara Jean Fields of Grundy; Betty Epling and Brenda Lee Hackney, both of Haysi, Patricia Joyce Fife and Kathy Ann Stump, both of Maxie, and Nancy Carol Stump of Fort Payne, Ala.; six brothers, James R. Stump of Grundy and Charlie S. Stump, Robert Lee Stump, Carl B. Stump, Ronald K. Stump and Jim Stump, all of Maxie; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. Elders James McClanahan, Jim Blankenship, Johnny Paul McClanahan, William McClanahan, Billy Campbell and Frank Newsome will officiate. Burial will be in Ramey Cemetery at Conaway, Va. GRUNDY -- Merinda Adnia Stacy Ward, 91, of the Slate Creek area, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the home of her daughter. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Ben and Sally Smith Stacy, and was a member of Tookland Pentecostal Church. She was the widow of Irvin Ward. Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Keen and Kathleen Keen, both of Grundy, and Jantine Hill of Kenton, Tenn.; six sons, Alden Ward, Waldo Ward and Earl James Ward, all of Grundy, Cleon Ward of Cedar Bluff, Avon Ward of Tazewell and Danny Ward of New Braunfels, Texas; 36 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Dewey Ward, Buford Smith, Ancil Childress and Ronnie Parks will officiate. Burial will be in Ward Cemetery on Stonecoal, Slate Creek in Grundy. Ronnie Parks will officiate. Mrs. Ward was also preceded in death by a daughter, Merida Ilene Ward; a son, Victor Ward; four sisters, Caldonia Stacy, Elsie Stacy, Maggie Davis and Belva Stacy; and four brothers, William "Willie" Stacy, Frank Stacy, Howard Stacy and Calvin Stacy. She was a devoted wife of Irvin Ward, who preceded her in death in 1972, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Pallbearers will be grandsons. HURLEY -- Franklin Delon Rife, 64, died Monday, May 8, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Hibbert W. and Abbie Charles Rife. He was a member of the House of Prayer. He was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Surviving are his wife, Rachel Fortner Rife; two daughters, Evelena Karol McCoy of Grundy and Deddria Gail Hensley of Hurley; three sons, Dale Franklin Rife and Jeffery Delong Rife, both of Hurley and James Michael Rife of Vansant, Va.; three sisters, Birchie Looney of Ohio, Marie Ashby of Hurley and Lillian McMillian of Florida; six brothers, Jimmy J. Rife, Ralph Rife and Hufford Rife, all of Hurley, Hassell Rife and Kermit Rife, both of Florida, and Kirby Rife of Grundy; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Roscoe Rife, Michael Ashby and James Chapman will officiate. ROWE, Va. -- Henry Herman Street, 79, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Grover C. and Mary A. Blankenship Street, and had lived in the Rowe area most of his life. He attended Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Rowe. He was a coal miner for 42 years, employed with Jewell Ridge Coal Corp., and was a member of the UMWA Local 7327. He was the widower of Ora Belle Blankenship Street. Surviving are two daughters, Loretta Martin of Richlands and Roberta Robinson of Lebanon; five sons, Larry W. Street of Rowe, Hershel J. Street of Oakwood, Va., Kenneth C. Street of Davenport, Va., Troy D. Street of Vansant, Va. and Tracy L. Street of the home; a sister, Ethel Street of Richlands; a brother, Hensley Street of Rogersville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Rowe by Honaker Funeral Home. The Revs. Ancil Childress, Randy Webb and Buddy Herald will officiate. Burial will be in Street Cemetery at Rowe. Mr. Street was also preceded in death by three infant children; a grandson; four brothers; and two sisters. WHITEWOOD, VA. -- Elbert Lee Cantrell, 88, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late James H. and Mary Louise Boyd Cantrell. He was the widower of Nancy Rebecca Horn Cantrell. Surviving are a son, Beve Cantrell of Mosely, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Frances) Hughes of Whitewood and Mrs. Daniel (Ethel) Watson of Richlands; a sister, Rosie Keen of St. Paul; a brother, Raymond Cantrell of Pilgrim Knob, Va.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va. The Revs. Troy Lester and David Horton will officiate. Burial will be in Ferrell Family Cemetery on Horne Mountain. Mr. Cantrell was also preceded in death by two sons, Alden Cantrell and Victor Cantrell; and a grandson, Jerry Helton. CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Molly Asbury Gregory, 97, formerly of Vansant, Va., died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was born in Bradshaw, W.Va., a daughter of the late Henry and Cosby Jewell Asbury. She had lived in Buchanan County several years and in Chesapeake for 20 years. She was a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church and the widow of Hulen Gregory. Surviving are a daughter, Jackie Yates of Chesapeake; three sons, Eugene Gregory of Smithfield, Va., Bill Gregory of Kansas City, Kan., and Richard Gregory of Carrolton, Va.; a sister, Florence Rife of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Burl Asbury of Jolo, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Zion and Jeff Slone will officiate. Burial will be in Looney Cemetery in Vansant. Mrs. Gregory was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ollie Hagy and Myrtle Mullins; and three brothers, Bill, Cleve and John Asbury. HURLEY, Va. -- William Matthew "Billy" Blankenship, 29, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of Billy C. and Lois Salmons Blankenship and attended the Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Hurley High School Class of 1988. He was an employee of Rapoca Coal Co. Buchanan No. 2. Surviving, besides his parents, are a brother, David Tommy Blankenship of Hurley; maternal grandmother, Delphia Salmons of Hurley; and paternal grandmother, Mary Blankenship of Harman, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church in Wolford, Va. by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders Josh Justus Jr., James Stacy, Eddie Cooper, Bill McCoy, Kermit Lester and Gary Justus will officiate. Burial will be in Salmons Family Cemetery in Hurley. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a daughter of the late William Albert and Matilda Ramey, and a member of the Jesus Only Church. She was the widow of Willie Hackney. Surviving are two daughters, Betty Jean Clevinger of Mouth Card, Ky., and Magdalene Bartley of Maxie, Va.; four sons, Jack Hackney of Abingdon, Herman A. Hackney of Mouth Card, William George Hackney of Grundy and Harold D. Hackney of Maxie; three sisters, Ollie Clevinger of Dublin, Va. and Dicie Slone and Irene Darnell, both of Mouth Card; two brothers, Leslie Ramey of Columbus, Ohio, and Elmer Ramey of Mouth Card; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. BIG ROCK, Va. -- Hubert Eugene Lester, 40, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of Ocie Taylor Lester and the late Miles Lester, and a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1978. He was of the Pentecostal faith and an employee of Buchanan County Transportation System. Surviving, besides his mother, are three sisters, Mary Coleman of Big Rock, Ruby Browning of Kingsport and Janice Phillips of Maxie, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Danny Hess, Darrell Davis and Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock. Mr. Lester was also preceded in death by a brother, Franklin D. Lester. GRUNDY -- Jessie Honaker, 78, died Monday, May 15, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Floyd and Lovis Cline Honaker. He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church for 43 years, where he served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of corporal. He was the recipient of the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. Surviving are his wife, Alta Keen Honaker; two daughters, Barbara H. Rowlett of Grundy and Lillian Keen of Lutz, Fla.; two sons, Steve Honaker of Abingdon and Johnny A. Honaker of Grundy; two sisters, June Matusiak of Baltimore and Estelle Gallager of Ironton, Ohio; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Baptist Church by Grundy Funeral Home. The Revs. Don Pope and Rick Ellis will officiate. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of the late Marion and Ocie Elswick Breeding. He graduated from Grundy High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Pittson Coal Corp. and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Gilbert Breeding; a daughter, Alta Sue B. Looney of Breaks, Va.; two sons, Ray Allen Breeding of Vansant, Va., and Gary Edward Breeding of Abingdon; seven sisters, Dixie Cantrell, Ella Rose, Mary Feltcher and Alma Roark, all of Michigan, Gay Hutchinson of Pinckney, Mich., Ethel Corbett of Atlanta and Claudetta Glascox of Richlands; a brother, Marion Breeding Jr. of Big Rock; and three grandchildren. He was a retired machinist for Unysis Corp. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, a graduate of Grundy High School and the widower of Lanora Spencer Mullins. Surviving are two daughters, Terri Renard of Breaks and Sandy Coombe of Dryden, Mich.; three sons, Michael Mullins of Lapeer, Mich., and David Mullins and Jimmie Harper, both of Warren, Mich.; two sisters, Lucille Mounts of Breaks and Ivel Harris of Chester, Va.; a brother, Robert Mullins of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years, and he was a member of Bethany Bible Church. He was a retired coal miner and merchant. Surviving are his wife, Ola K. Tackett; two sons, James B. Tackett and David Keith Tackett, both of Hurley; a sister, Georgia Runyon of Pikeville, Ky.; four brothers, Luther Tackett of Columbus, Ohio, Charles Tackett of Las Vegas, Nev., Garland Tackett of Slippery Rock, Pa., and Eugene Tackett of Pikeville, Ky.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. PATTERSON, Va. -- Abraham Lincoln White, 72, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at home. He was born in McDowell County, W.Va., a son of the late Starlin and Millie Jane Street White. He had lived in Buchanan County for several years. He was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle Church and a member of IOOF Lodge 17 of Grundy. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Norfolk and Western Railway, with 41 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Mary Kathleen Owens White; five daughters, Elizabeth Ann Meadows of Vansant, Va., Barbara Lynn Matney of Patterson, Surbrena Carol Clevinger of Grundy, Patricia Gail Keen of Odenton, Md., and Aleta Jo Bowles of Statesville, N.C.; two sons, Willard White of Lynchburg, Va., and Kenneth R. White of Patterson; two sisters, Ethel Smith and Lottie Yates, both of Oakwood, Va.; and 11 grandchildren. GRUNDY -- America Ethel Mitchell, 77, of Route 4, died Monday, May 29, 2000. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of Leck and Tracy Deel, and was the widow of Basil Mitchell. She was a homemaker and a member of Old Regular Baptist Church for 49 years. Surviving are four daughters, Emil Jean Deel of Harman, Va. and Emma Gay Compton, Ledna Fern Woods and Marcella Owens, all of Prater, Va.; five sons, William Harold Mitchell, Ricky Ferrell Mitchell and Charlie Creed Mitchell, all of Prater, James Carl Mitchell of Dismal, Va., and Michael Stanford Mitchell of Hurley, Va.; a sister, Lillie May Breeding of Richlands; three brothers, Virgil Deel of Richlands, Ervin Deel of Prater and Earl Deel of Warren, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church by Haysi Funeral Home. Elders Freddie Ramey, David O'Quinn and Eddie Newsome will officiate. Burial will be in Mitchell Family Cemetery in Prater. Mrs. Mitchell was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lorrine Mitchell; and a grandson, Brian Mitchell. Pallbearers will be Jeff Bailey, Matthew Woods, Adam Deel, Johnny Fuller, Travis Mitchell, Jason Mitchell, Nathan Mitchell, Aaron Deel, Sabian Deel and Brian Hargett. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the church, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

VANSANT, Va. -- Stella M. Phipps, 84, died Monday, May 29, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Taze and Mary Owens Viers. She was a member of Vansant Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Avon F. Phipps; two daughters, Thelma Smith of Elkin, N.C., and Gail Belcher of Vansant; a son, James C. Owens of Moncks Corner, S.C.; three stepdaughters, Janice Anderson of Grundy and Jean Howell and Phyliss Pruitt, both of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Cecil Viers of Vansant; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Vansant Baptist Church by Grundy Funeral Home. The Rev. Stan Parris will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at 9 a.m. Wednesday to await the funeral hour at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Greenhill Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Mrs. Phipps was also preceded in death by a sister; and six brothers. Among survivors are sons-in-law, Jackie Smith of Elkin and Brian Belcher of Vansant; daughter-in-law Rachel Owens of Moncks Corner; and stepsons-in-law, Marshall Anderson of Grundy and Darrell Howell of St. Louis. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel.

ORACLE, Ariz. -- Ethel Clevinger Looney Swanson, 88, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at home. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Sylvester and Victoria Davis Clevinger, and moved to Miami in 1947. While living in the Grundy area, she was a member of Grundy Church of Christ. She was a retired employee of Central Bank of Miami with 21 years of service. After her retirement in 1982, she moved to Oracle and was a member of Oracle Union Church. Surviving are her husband, Clinton H. Swanson; a son, Bobby Gene Looney of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Lonnie Clevinger of Maxie, Va.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Willard Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Swanson was also preceded in death by a son, Benny Charles Looney; a sister, Onie Brown; and four brothers, Lum, Bob, Kenneth and Rans Clevinger. Among survivors are daughters-in-law, Eva Looney of Tucson and Mrs. Benny (Clara) Looney of Oracle. Pallbearers will be Sonny Clevinger, John Clevinger, David Ratliff, Everett Delaney, David Delaney, Charlie Edwards and Donald Looney. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel, where services will be held at 7 p.m. The Rev. Jerry Edwards will officiate with a song service by the Mays Family. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
