Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Samuel H. Ward, 77, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in a Kingsport hospital. He was a native of Whitewood, and a retired miner of Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation, Jewell Smokeless and Island Creek Coal Companies. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7327 of Jewell Valley. He was a lifelong resident of the Pilgrim Knob area, a World War II Navy veteran and was of the Holiness faith. Survivors include his wife, Lola Horn Ward; one daughter, Mrs. Anna Ruth Hale, Cedar Bluff; two sons, Allen Ward, Pilgrim Knob, and David L. Ward, Bristol Virginia; one sister, Mrs. Helen Horn, Meadowview; two brothers, Earl K. Ward, Lawton, Okla., and George Ward, Pilgrim Knob; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William Alfred Brown, 66, of the College View Addition, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at his home. He was a native of Buchanan County and was a retired mine inspector with MSHA and a former employee of the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation. He was a lifelong resident of Richlands, Jewell Ridge and Cedar Bluff areas and was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle. He had served in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sue Harman Brown; three daughters, Mrs. Randy (Mona) Miller, Kansas City, Kan., Mrs. Kevin (Josie) Ratliff and Mrs. Joe (Roni) Endicott, both of Paintlick, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Bernice Patrick, Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Russell Brown, Interlochen, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Patsy Mae Mullins, 81, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, in a Richlands, Va., hospital. She was a native of Buchanan County and the widow of Wiley Mullins. She was employed as assessor for Buchanan County and was a former employee of Lotz Funeral Home, Salem, Va. She was secretary-treasurer of Flatwoods Church of Christ for 33 years, a member of Richlands Order of Eastern Star, associate member of UMWA and past president and treasurer of Whitewood Senior Citizens. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Eleanor) Maggard, Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; one son, Arthur Wiley, Compton Mountain; one sister, Sarah Wimmer, Jewell Ridge; two grandsons, Shaun Mullins, Marvin, Va., and Terry Maggard, Sevierville, Tenn.; and three great-grandsons.

Joyce Ann Owens, 54, of Route 1, Prater, Virginia, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. She was a native of Buchanan County and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include one sister, Nellie Pruner, Vansant; five brothers, Trinkle Deel, Rosedale, Willard Owens, Council, Otto Owens, Harmon, Gordon Owens, Ten Mile, Tenn., and Donnie Owens, Oakwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruby Jean Skeens, 60, of Mavisdale, Virginia, died Friday, June 27, 1997, in Buchanan General Hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a graduate of Grundy High School. She was a member of New Life Fellowship Church, Oakwood, and a former employee of Piggly Wiggly. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Eva) Davis, Grundy; two sons, Randy Skeens, Vansant, and Steven Todd Skeens, St. Paul; her mother, Mrs. Edith Lee Skeens Mullins, Grundy; five sisters, Geneva Elliott and Melissa Ann Gohl, both of Huron, Ohio, June Peri, San Diego, Calif., Verna Young, Clyde, Ohio, and Melba Joan Ratliff, Grundy; one brother, James Skeens, Maine; and ten grandchildren.

Lethia Marie Effler, 69, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. Although she was a native of McDowell County, W.Va., she was a resident of Vansant, Virginia, and a member of Vansant Church of Christ. She was disabled and a former employee of Town and Country Beauty Shop, Grundy. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Arville (Eva) Ratliff, Vansant, Mrs. Irene Carter, Herndon, W.Va., and Mrs. Jim (Margaret) Shelton, Lakeland, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Mrs. Mary Amandalean "Manda" Sisk, 74, formerly of Buchanan County, Va., died Monday, June 30, 1997, in a Richlands hospital. Although she was a native of Russell County and had lived in Buchanan County for 54 years prior to moving to Richlands two years ago. She was of the Holiness faith. Survivors include her husband, Oliver Sisk; five daughters, Mrs. Troy (Thelma) Arbogast, Elkins, W.Va., Mrs. Vilven Nelson, Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Bobby (Ilean) Shinall and Joyce Sisk, both of Richlands, and Mrs. Bobby (Mae) Endicott, Maxie, Va.; seven sons, Fred Sisk, Richlands, Bill Sisk, Winston-Salem, N.C., Brady Sisk, Bernard Sisk, Carl Sisk, Ray Sisk and Ira Sisk, all of Raven; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Rick Lee Hill, 40, of Elmhurst, Ill., died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at his home. He was a native of Buchanan County. Survivors include his parents, Calvin and Mary Barton Hill; one brother, Calvin Hill Jr.; two sisters, Sharon Hill and Lisa Stemple; one nephew; one niece; and several aunts and uncles.

Kathleen Mullins Lane Ratliff, 56, of Route 2, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at her home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Holiness Church and was a homemaker. She was the widow of her first husband, Estil F. Lane. Survivors include her husband, Jim Ratliff Jr.; two daughters, Diane Dotson, Maxie, and Stephanie Stiltner, Harman; three sons, Curtis Lee Lane and Rocky Dean lane, both of Tazewell, and Jerry Wayne Lane, Maxie; two sisters, Geraldine Lester, Oakwood, and Peggy Blankenship, Harman; two brothers, Kennith Mullins, St. Augustine, Fla., and Ronnie Mullins, Taylorsville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Hattie Wilson Stiltner, 90, of Route 2, Poplar Creek section, Buchanan County, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. She was a native of Buchanan County, a 52-year member of Old Regular Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of Fred A. Stiltner. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Keen, Pikeville, Ky., Mrs. Robert (Alice) Copeland, Brandywine, Mich., Mrs. John (Brenda) Myers, Fountain Town, Ind., and Mrs. Dewey (Pearl) McClanahan, Grundy; one son, Denver Stiltner, Grundy; 28 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Mack Walter Matney, 54, of the Kents Ridge section, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, in a Richlands hospital. He was a native of Buchanan County and was a self-employed building contractor for 23 years for MWM Construction, Inc. He was a member of the Tazewell County Airport Authority, a member of Tazewell County PSA and a member of Tazewell County Fair Committee. He was also a member of the Tazewell County Habitat for Humanity and a member of Belfast Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Lester Matney; two sons, Calvin Matney, Blacksburg, and Barry Matney, Cedar Bluff; three daughters, Mrs. Robin Templeton, Charlottesville, Va., Le Chrystie Matney and Amy Matney, both of the home; his mother, Mrs. Nora Bailey Matney, Cedar Bluff; seven brothers, Roger Matney, Sterling, Va., James Matney, Arcola, Va., Jack Matney, Tazewell, Joe Matney, Bobby Matney, Keith Matney and Tim Matney, all of Cedar Bluff; and four grandchildren.

Linda Cooper Skeens, 78, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended the Church of Christ. She was a homemaker and was the widow of Charlie Skeens. Survivors include two sons, Bobby Joe Skeens, Big Rock, and Bernard Lee Skeens, Yorktown, Va.; three grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; two step-grandsons; four step-great-granddaughters; three step-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

RICHLANDS -- Linkous H. Horn, 71, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late William and Matilda Keen Horn, and was a retired coal miner. Surviving are his wife, Betty Childress Horn; two sons, Ronnie Gene Horn of Keen Mountain, Va. and Gary Wayne Horn of Cedar Bluff; five daughters, Mrs. Charles (Connie) Davidson and Mrs. Ira (Joyce) Meade Jr., both of Raven, Va., Mrs. Rufus (Janice) Baldwin of Richlands, Sandra Dales of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Ferrell (Sharon) Compton of Doran, Va.; four sisters, Arizona Cole of Florida, Gussie Mullins and Leona Boyd, both of Pilgrims Knob, Va., and Laquetta Addison of Luray, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery at Keen Mountain, Va. Pallbearers will be Mark Meade, Tracy Davidson, Robby Horn, Tony Horn, Jamie Dales, Nick Deskins, Brian Maggard, Michael Horn, Dusty Compton, Chris Harrison, Stevie Horn and Brian Carty. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday in Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff.

HAYSI, Va. -- Funeral services for Leah Robinson will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Hicks will officiate. Burial will be in Robinson Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Mrs. Robinson, 77, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at home. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Issac and Rebecca Alolla Ann Boyd Price, and had lived most of her life in Dickenson County. She was of the Methodist faith and attended Dickenson First Presbyterian Church of Haysi. She was the widow of Roland Evans Robinson. Surviving are three daughters, Gloria Lamar of Austin, Texas, Dayne Edwards of Birchleaf, Va., and Jan Tanner of Richlands; two sons, Ked Robinson of Tennessee and Tim Robinson of Smiths Creek, Mich.; four sisters, Nancy Kopp of Stow, Ohio, Faye Justice of Mavisdale, Va., Mrs. Leon (Elizabeth) Robinson of Castlewood and Mrs. Ross (Goldie) Kettleson of Fenton, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Robinson was also preceded in death by four brothers, Tivis Price, Cecil Price, Paul Price and Jessie Ray Price; and a grandson. Among survivors are sons-in-law Larry Edwards of Birchleaf and Ron Tanner of Richlands; daughter-in-law Paula Robinson of Smiths Creek; brother-in-law, Garn Compton of Grundy; sisters-in-law Estelle Owens and Vivian Kiser, both of Haysi and Garnette Compton of Grundy; and numerous cousins and family friends. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be brothers-in-law and sons-in-law. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

PETERSTOWN, W.Va. -- Grat N. Day, 75, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his home. He was born at Pea Patch in Buchanan County, a son of the late Newton Blair and Evelyn Davis Day, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Surviving are his wife, Sarah (Sally) Horn; two sons, Randall Day of Sophia, W.Va., and Frank Stacy of Rupert, W.Va.; six daughters, Mrs. James (Deanna) House of Cottondale, Ala., Mrs. Earl (Sue) Cook of Crestwood, Ky., Mrs. Jack (Chris) Smock of St. Marys, Ga., Mrs. Glen (Melissa) Manning of Tazewell, Va., Mrs. Greg (Tammy) Brown of Pearisburg, Va., and Mrs. James (Kathy) Bostic of Baptist Valley, Va.; four sisters, Elizabeth Rife and Effie Burress, both of Jewell Ridge, Va., Opal Gilbert of Butler, Tenn., and Ruth Day of Hilliard, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Among survivors are daughters-in-law Ruth Day of Sophia and Debbie Stacy of Rupert. Pallbearers will be nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff.

VANSANT, Va. -- Tivis Oquinn, 92, of Route 1, Little Fox Community died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at the home of his son. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late James Harvey and Matilda Deel Oquinn, and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of Duty View Primitive Baptist Church and the widower of Nancy Mae Stevens Oquinn. Surviving are a daughter, Ama Lou Viers of Bristol Virginia; three sons, Freddie Bernard Oquinn, Leon Oquinn and Darrell Oquinn, all of Vansant; two sisters, Maudie Street of Abingdon and Myrtle Jackson of Dublin, Va.; a half-sister, Bonnie Mcgee of Oregon; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a foster grandchild; and a foster great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home Chapel by Haysi Funeral Home. Elders Franklin Viers, Price Viers, Garnell Gilbert and Bobby Arrington will officiate. Burial will be in the Stevens Cemetery, Route 1, Vansant. Mr. Oquinn was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene Oquinn; and a grandson, Michael Viers. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. A service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in Haysi Funeral Home.
