Ricky N. Knight
Ricky Nelson Knight, 45, of Peake Mountain Road, Fulks Run, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident.
Mr. Knight was born Aug. 31, 1958, and was a son of the late Ruby Hoover Knight and Paul B. Knight of Fulks Run.
He was employed at Rocco Poultry for 10 years and worked at Cerro Metal in Weyers Cave for the past four years.
In addition to his father, he is survived by a daughter, Melissa Lam of Dayton; three brothers, Speedy Daniel Knight of Harrisonburg, and Avis Eugene Knight and Ronnie Wayne Knight, both of Fulks Run; two sisters, Wanda Smith of West Virginia and Carol Jean Knight of Fulks Run; and two grandchildren.
The Revs. Laney Knight and James Shoemaker will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at the Mount Clinton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
Morris L. Alt
Morris Lee Alt, 58, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of Petersburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Alt was born Jan. 10, 1945, in Petersburg, W.Va., and was the son of Elsie Lee Alt Hedrick of Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg, W.Va.
Mr. Alt graduated from Petersburg High School in 1965. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam and a member of the Petersburg Lodge No. 145 A.F.&A.M. He and his business associate, Jimmie Breeden, were self-employed building contractors. Mr. Alt was a member of the Petersburg Memorial Church of the Brethren.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sharon Ciotti Alt; a son, Kenny Harrison Alt II of Harrisonburg; a sister, Bonnie Hedrick and a brother, Larry K. Hedrick, both of Petersburg, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Stanley Kile will conduct the funeral 1 p.m. today at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va., where the family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. today. Burial will be private.

Clark A. Showalter
Clark A. Showalter, 94, of 54 Augusta Farms Road, Waynesboro, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Funeral arrangements were pending Sunday night at Reynolds Funeral Service in Stuarts Draft.
Edna L. Bateman
Edna Lucy Bateman, 96, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community.

Vivian O. Shreve
Vivian O. Shreve, 95, of Linville, died Oct. 12, 2003. Born on May 7, 1908, the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Florence High Fries.
Vivian was the last surviving member of her immediate family, but is survived by her nephew’s wife, June Fries of Oxon Hill, Md.; a great nephew, Richard W. Fries Jr. of Frederick, Md.; great niece, Janet Freeman of Westminster, Md.; two great-great nephews; a great-great niece; her loving sister-in-law, Helen Fries of Harrisonburg; her niece by marriage, Hazel Merchant and her husband, Phil, of Ocala, Fla.; and a lot of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph C. Shreve; a sister, Odessa Ritchie; a brother, Charles E. Fries; and a nephew, Richard W. Fries Sr.
Vivian graduated from Linville Edom High School, where she participated in track events and girl’s basketball and forensics. After graduation, she worked at the Harrisonburg Shoe Factory before she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for 25 years, and the Department of the Army Chemical Corps. Upon retiring from working for the government, she and her husband, Randy, returned to Linville, where she resided until her death.
Vivian loved dogs, was appreciative and knowledgeable about politics and the Metropolitan area. Likewise, she and Randy were loyal Redskins fans all their lives.
Vivian was a lifetime member and loyal supporter of her church, Linville United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Linville United Church of Christ with the Rev. Tresa F. Quarles officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Beulah M. Bodkin
Beulah Mae Bodkin, 83, of 87 Lofton Drive, Weyers Cave, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville.
Miss Bodkin was born on Sept. 22, 1920, in Sugar Grove, W.Va., a daughter of the late Kennie Eli and Clara Rebecca (Simmons) Bodkin.
Prior to her retirement, she had been employed for 40 years by the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company as an office manager. She was a member of Staunton Church of the Brethren, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Group and the Sunshine Sunday School Class.
Family members include two nieces, Patsy "Pat" Phillips and her husband, Charles, of Mount Crawford, and Donna Curtis and her husband, Allen, of Richmond; two nephews, Robert J. "Bob" Simmons and his wife, Judy, of Moneta and Minor E. Bodkin Jr. "Bud" and his wife, Barbara, of Collinsville; a number of great nieces and nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Hershel Simmons of Weyers Cave; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Bodkin of Staunton.
In addition to her parents, Miss Bodkin was preceded in death by a brother, Minor E. Bodkin, and a sister, Clora B. Simmons.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 2, 2003) at Staunton Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Jerry W. Ruff. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at Henry Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.

Virginia A. Downs
Virginia Alexandria Beam Downs, 97, of Staunton, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Avante at Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Downs was born Feb. 27, 1906, in Swoope, and was the daughter of Herbert and Sydney Thomas Beam.
She was a member of West View United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Marvin S. Downs, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Earl J. Downs of Staunton, and a daughter, Doris S. Mace of Chattanooga, Tenn.
The services will be private.
There will be no public viewing or visitation.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Daniel T. Showalter
Daniel Timothy Showalter, 87, of Trissels Road, Broadway, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Showalter was born May 25, 1916, in Broadway, and was a son of the late Timothy and Susie Shipe Showalter.
He was a farmer and a beekeeper. He was a member of Trissels Mennonite Church in Broadway.
On Aug. 28, 1942, he married the former Bernice May, who preceded him in death Aug. 22, 2003.
He is survived by a daughter, Karla S. Souder of Linville; three sons, Joseph Daniel Showalter of New Market, and Warren Eugene and Wayne Dale Showalter, both of Broadway; a sister, Ida Showalter of Broadway; a foster brother, Teddy Hartman of Broadway; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one foster great-grandchild.
The Revs. Phil Kanagy and Clyde Kratz will conduct the funeral 4 p.m. Friday at Trissels Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Ronald L. Potter Jr.
Mr. Ronald LeRoy "Ronnie" Potter Jr., age 34, of 474C Longview Drive, Harrisonburg, formerly of Covington, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Mr. Potter was born Sept. 7, 1969, in Clifton Forge, the son of Ronald LeRoy Potter Sr. and Joyce Rhodes Potter.
Mr. Potter worked in the warehouse of TWC Cold Storage Morningstar. He was of the Baptist faith and was a graduate of Alleghany High School Class of 1988. He received a welding certificate from Jackson River Vocational Center and was a graduate of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. Ronnie was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, and enjoyed all types of athletic sports. Ronnie loved his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Ronnie is survived by one son, Afton Chase Potter and his mother, Heather Marie Jackson, a special companion and friend, both of Covington; one daughter, Jessica Hubbard of Covington; two sisters, Robin Potter Duncan of Staunton and Julie Potter Lawson and husband, Wayne, of Covington; three nieces, Amy Lee Daves, Emily A. Lawson, and Kelly M. Lawson; one great niece, Kaitlee Rahne Daves; and one nephew, John T. Lawson. Also surviving are a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at Faith Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, with the Rev. Billy Price officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Loving Funeral Home and at the residence, 300 Lacks Avenue, Brentwood, at other times.
Dorothy M. Bowen
Dorothy Marie Bowen, 84, of 117 Gray Hill Lane in Stanley, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray.
Mrs. Bowen was born Nov. 24, 1918, in Stanley, and was the daughter of the late David Henry Crawford and Bertha Ethel Gray Crawford.
She was a homemaker and a member of Salem Regular Baptist Church, Clarke County.
On Dec. 28, 1963, she married Edward L. Bowen, who preceded her in death May 20, 1989.
She is survived by four sons, David G. Gray Sr. of Culpeper, Gilbert R. Gray Jr. of Harrisonburg, and Jackie R. Gray and Randal E. Gray, both of Stanley; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Harold H. Spencer will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial will be at Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester.

Robert E. Brown
Robert E. Brown, 63, of McGaheysville, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Catherine L. Day
Catherine Lou Day, 66, of Cabins, W.Va., died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Day was born Sept. 26, 1936, in Moorefield, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Morris Harper and Nellie Catherine Nelson Harper.
She was S.C.S.E.P. for the U.S. Forest Service in Petersburg for two years.
Her husband, Hubert Fay Day, preceded her in death May 13, 1968.
She is survived by a son, David A. Day of Chebanse, Ill.; a sister, Judy Harper of Baltimore; a brother, Dean Allen Harper of Jefferson, Md.; three stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Isabel O. Peer
Isabel O. Peer, 78, of Massanutten, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Peer was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Havre de Grace, Md., and was the daughter of the late Sam and Elizabeth Foley Orsini.
She moved to this area in 1993 from northern Virginia and was a retired secretary for Loudoun County. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Valley Greeters, Massanutten Women’s Club and the Massanutten Bridge Club.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Nelson Peer, and a daughter, Cindi Fisher of Estero, Fla.
A Christian Wake service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Father Jim Gallagher officiating. Burial will be Friday at Edgehill Cemetery in Charles Town, W.Va.
