Mabel H. Brill
Mabel Hess Brill, 95, of Moorefield, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Brill was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Monongalia County, and was the daughter of the late Ray Hess and Ola Neely Hess.
She was a home economics teacher in Hardy County and was a member of Duffy Methodist Church.
Her husband, Woodrow Brill, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Brill Gross of Winchester; a son, Ronald W. Brill Jr. of Abingdon; two brothers, Clarence Hess of Luray and Clyde Hess of Lancaster; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pastor Don Clark will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield, W.Va. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Gene C. Hedrick
Gene C. "Big Mut" Hedrick passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at his residence in Rawley Springs.
He was born on Feb. 7, 1949. After graduating from Broadway High School in 1967, he attended Blue Ridge Community College, where he received a degree in diesel mechanic engineering. He worked for several local trucking companies and once was part owner of Big Rigs Used Parts and Salvage. He was presently employed at Pilgrim’s Pride in Hinton, Va., as supervisor mechanic for night shift. Gene was an avid motorcycle rider and restorer, restoring historic Indian Motorcycles, which he and his son enjoyed riding in local parades and on Sunday trips. He rode in many rallies for charities, such as Freedom Ride and Rolling Thunder, which he loved doing with the numerous members of his motorcycle family.
Gene was also a historian of the Civil War. He often visited Civil War battlegrounds and memorials. He enjoyed researching his family's historic involvement in the war. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Sons of the American Revolution.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett C. Hedrick and Dorothy Propst Hedrick, both of West Virginia.
He is survived by his son, Andrew Gene Hedrick and daughter-in-law, Stephanie, of Statesville, N.C.; a sister, Loretta, and brother-in-law, Douglas Crider of Harrisonburg; a brother, Ronald and sister-in-law, Jean Brown of Martinsburg, W.Va.; foster brother, Ron Kyger of Harrisonburg; and multiple uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and many close friends. He will be remembered by all who knew him and the lives he touched. "Old Indians Never Die."
Family will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin, W.Va. A service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. also at the Kimble Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin following the service.

Clarence W. Aleshire
Clarence William Aleshire, 80, 139 Whispering Hills, Luray, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at MontVue Nursing Home.
Mr. Aleshire was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Bentonville and was the son of the late Noah William Aleshire and Rosie Corbin Aleshire.
He was a textile worker at Luray Textiles. He was a member of Luray Church of the Brethren. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
On May 2, 1942, he married Gladys Mae Bell Aleshire, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Austin Edward Aleshire Luray; a daughter, Charlotte Mae Alger of Luray; and a sister, Mattie Aleshire Morgan of Luray.
The Rev. Max W. Fisher and JuliAnne Bowser Sloughfy will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bradley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
John D. Burkholder
John David Burkholder, 66, 860 Greenway Circle, Waynesboro, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements were pending Thursday night at McDow Funeral Home.
Dr. Robert S. Bryant Jr.
Dr. Robert Singleton Bryant Jr., 71, of 1208 Woodcrest Circle, Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
A son of the late Robert Singleton Bryant Sr. and Mary Gerant Bryant, he was born July 9, 1932, in Washington, D.C., where he grew up.
Dr. Bryant was educated at George Washington University, George Washington Medical School and did his residencies in George Washington University Hospital, DC General and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
He served in Germany for three years in the United States Army Medical Corp.
He began his practice in Harrisonburg in 1965 with Dr. Robert H. Sease specializing in Internal Medicine for thirty years before his retirement in 1995.
Dr. Bryant was a member of the Elks, the Lions Club, American Medical Association, Virginia Medical Society, Rockingham County Medical Society and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church.
He was an avid outdoorsman, accomplished pianist and was loved by all who knew him.
On June 7, 1958, he married Ruth W. Bryant, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Aleshire and husband Quinton of Harrisonburg; two sons, Robert W. Bryant of Broadway and John K. Bryant of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Robert Mitchell Bryant, Stephanie Richelle Bryant, Casey Lyn Aleshire, Coltin W. Aleshire, Chasen R. Bryant and Jonathan M. Bryant.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Harrisonburg Baptist Church with the Rev. T.W. Johnson Jr. officiating. A private burial will be held earlier.
The family will receive friends following the service on Saturday at the church.

Lester G. Bruce
Lester Grant Bruce, 46, 1302 Barterbrook Rd., Staunton, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Bruce was born April 27, 1957 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Grant and Alice Jane (Morris) Bruce.
Surviving are four brothers: Billy Bruce of Verona, Earl Bruce of Staunton, Elwood Bruce of Staunton and Paul Bruce, also of Staunton; three sisters: Betty Lucas of Staunton, Madeline Bruce of Verona and Arene Bruce of Rockbridge.
The Rev. Homer Lee Frazier will conduct the funeral 11:00 a.m. today at McDow Funeral Home. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Crimora.
There will be no public viewing.
Catherine N. Craun
Catherine Nora Diehl Craun, 87, of Grottoes, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center after not being well for the past year.
A daughter of the late Clark and Nora Roadcap Diehl, she was born Nov. 28, 1915, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Craun was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren but attended Crimora United Methodist Church.
On Dec. 31, 1936, she married Chester Franklin Craun, who preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1988.
Surviving are three children, Betty C. Woodson and husband Edgar of Greenwood, Doris C. Carpenter and husband Charles of Grottoes and Larry F. Craun and wife Joyce of Mount Solon; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Nelson Diehl and wife Hazel of Mount Crawford and Lloyd Diehl of Harrisonburg; three sisters-in-law, Naomi Diehl of Harrisonburg, Edna Diehl of Mount Crawford and Marie Hicks of Winchester and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Diehl, Harry Diehl and Lynwood Diehl and two sisters, Nancy Lam and Alda Good.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 4 p.m. at Crimora United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home or at her late residence any time.

Helen L. Davis
Helen Louise Crickenberger Davis, 84, New Hope, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She had been ill for some time.
Mrs. Davis was born March 11, 1919, in New Hope and was the daughter of the late Lloyd B. and Ethel Wright Crickenberger. She lived in New Hope all of her life.
She was educated at Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C. She was employed at Wayne Manufacturing, Woodrow Wilson Memorial Hospital and DuPont.
She was a member of the Christian Women’s Club in Staunton and Middle River Church of the Brethren where she served as clerk of the church for four years and taught Sunday school.
On June 5, 1949, she married Vernon T. Davis, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Roger K. Davis of Staunton and Ronald V. Davis of Yorktown; three grandchildren and a half-brother, Milton Crickenberger of Lewisburg, W.Va.
The Rev. Chester Fisher will conduct the funeral 10 a.m. Saturday at Middle River Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Chapel.

William H. Showalter
William "Harvey" Showalter, 80, of Mount Crawford, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
A son of the late Raymond Harshbarger and Alberta Craun Showalter, he was born June 15, 1923, and lived all of his life in the Sunnyside area of Mount Crawford.
Mr. Showalter was a chemical operator for Merck and Co. for 38 years before his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of Cross Keys-Mill Creek Ruritans, Woodmen of the World and the Melanchthon Chapel Lutheran Church where he was a trustee.
On June 2, 1948, he married Reta Mae Hottinger, who preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1990.
Surviving are one son, Thomas "Tommy" Showalter and wife Debbie of Harrisonburg; one daughter, Wanda Jones and husband Andrew of Mount Crawford; one granddaughter, Jessica Jones, several nieces and nephews, including Vicki Frenger and husband Mike of Verona; several great-nieces and great-nephews including Elizabeth and Matthew Frenger and a companion Nancy Vest of Grottoes.
Mr. Showalter was preceded in death by one sister, Agnes Showalter.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Melanchthon Chapel with the Rev. Peter S. Olsen officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Frances L. Bondranko
Mrs. Frances Louise Bondranko, 83, of 210 Jackson Ave., New Market, passed away 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at her home.
She was born Sept. 21, 1920, at Lacey Spring and was a daughter of the late Mark John and Annie Cole Shanko.
Mrs. Bondranko graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory at Dayton and was a piano teacher for over 50 years.
She was a lifetime member of the New Market Seventh-Day Adventist Church and had volunteered her services in church decorating and music for 27 years. She was also a member of the New Market Garden Club.
On May 23, 1948, she married Alexander Bondranko who passed away on May 10, 1984.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Tim Wampler of New Market; a sister, Ellen Bazzle of Alexandria and four grandchildren, Josh, Elaina, Mark and Kayla Wampler and numerous relatives and friends.
A celebration of Frances’ life will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the New Market Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Interment will follow at the Lacey Spring Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market. The casket will remain closed.

Wayne Franklin Smith, 57, of Grottoes, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at his home.
Funeral arrangements were pending Monday night at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
