Elmo N. Stanley
Elmo Norwood Stanley, 81, of Honeyville Road, Stanley, recently of the Whispering Pines Nursing Home, Luray, passed away at the University of Virginia Medical Center at 1 p.m. Oct. 22, 2003. He was in declining health with dementia, a recent neck injury and pneumonia.
He was born Feb. 21, 1922, son of the late Luther M. and Shirley Lee Comer Stanley of 10th Street and grandson of the late John E. and Dorcas Ann Minnick Stanley of Pee Dee, Shenandoah.
Mr. Stanley retired in the mid-1980s from the Alexandria Public Schools, as assistant principal, George Washington High School. In his early career, he served as teacher and coach at Shenandoah High School, Page County. He graduated from Florida Southern College and completed advanced graduate studies in educational administration at U.Va.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany. Upon retirement, Mr. Stanley returned to Shenandoah, served on the Industrial Development Committee and as Mayor of Shenandoah. Later, he located to Stanley, near Pine Hollow, where his great-grandfather, John H. Stanley, first settled in Page County, from Hanover County, during 1832.
Mr. Stanley never married. During his career, he helped several Page County residents in financing their college educations. He always was an advocate for students and public education.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Freelyn V. Stanley Sr. of Waynesboro, Avis O. Stanley of Harrisonburg, Wardell A. Stanley of Shenandoah, and Vincent E. Stanley of La Crosse, Wis.
Kyger Funeral Homes, Elkton, is assisting with arrangements. Pastor Carter Dean of Assembly of God Church in Shenandoah will conduct a graveside service for family and friends in the Fields Methodist Cemetery, Shenandoah, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m.
Lora L. Bierkamp
Lora Lee Bierkamp, 66, of Moorefield, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Bierkamp was born Sept. 8, 1937, in Alexandria, and was a daughter of the late Allen A. Ellicot and Ruth Anna Green.
She was a homemaker and a secretary for Bierkamp and Son Welding.
Surviving are her husband, Blaine Bierkamp; three sons, Michael, Scott and Jesse Bierkamp, all of Moorefield, W.Va.; a daughter, Linda Meloni of Elkins, W.Va.; a sister, Terri Shrader of Strasburg; nine grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
The Rev. John Wills will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield, W.Va. Burial will follow at South Branch Memorial Gardens in Petersburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

Chester D. Litten Jr.
Chester D. "Chet" Litten Jr., 72, of Gore, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Litten was born Feb. 13, 1931, in Fulks Run, and was a son of Chester D. and Lena Mae Lantz Litten.
He was a forestry consultant from 1959 to 1972 for the Virginia State Forestry Division in Portsmouth and Staunton districts and for Northwestern Virginia Landowners Service from 1972 to 1988. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Litten graduated from Broadway High School in 1949 and West Virginia University School of Forestry in 1957. He was a member of American Legion Post 137 of Capon Bridge, W.Va., and a past member of the Izaak Walton League.
His wife, Ruth McDonald Litten, preceded him in death in 1986.
He is survived by a son, Jon D. Litten of Ocala, Fla.; a daughter, Anita M Funston of Rockville, Md.; a sister, Frances Showalter of Timberville; and two brothers, Richard Litten of Bellingham, Wash., and John G. Litten of Harrisonburg.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Charlotte S. Wampler
Mrs. Charlotte S. Wampler, 98, of Harrisonburg, died Oct. 23, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Wampler was born on April 28, 1905, at Dale Enterprise and was a daughter of Charlie Swope Showalter and Annie Joseph Showalter.
She was a member of the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church. She had been in failing health for several years.
On March 5, 1925, she married C.M. Wampler, who died Feb. 21, 1988.
Surviving are four children, Bonnie L. Wampler, June W. Craun, and Carolyn A. Wampler, all of Harrisonburg, Eddy S. Wampler and daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen, of Dayton; five grandchildren, Wayne Craun, Steve Craun, Sidney Craun, Debra Martin, Joanie Cassens and seven great-grandchildren.
She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 Saturday (this) evening at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Roxy O. Click
Roxy Oletia Click, 79, of Mount Jackson, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.
Mrs. Click was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Shenandoah Alum Springs, and was a daughter of the late Clarence and Ina Rebecca Conrad Funkhouser.
She was a retired bookkeeper and a member of St. James Lutheran Church at Hudson Cross Roads.
Survivors include a daughter, Bernidine A. Click of Mount Jackson; a son, Michael E. Click Sr. of Clinton, Md.; two sisters, Arletta Lindsley of Renton, Wash., and Marcella Pierce of La Jolla, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Charles Leatherman will conduct the funeral 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson. Burial will follow at Hudson Cross Roads Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Magdalena Wolf
Magdalena Wolf, 82, of Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Wolf was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Russelsheim, Germany, and was the daughter of the late Heinrich and Marguerite Brandau Burghardt.
She was a homemaker and was employed at Westinghouse for 10 years.
On Sept. 11, 1948, she married Philipp Heinrich Wolf, who preceded her in death March 19, 1983.
She is survived by a son, Roland Wolf of Mount Sidney, and a grandson.
A private service will be held at Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro. There will be no formal visitation.

Blanche C. Koontz
Blanche C. Koontz, 92, of Romney, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Koontz was born June 10, 1911, in Hardy County, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Michael and Hattie Wratchford Kuykendall.
She was a member of the Romney Church of the Brethren and retired as a housekeeper with the New Century Hotel and Eastern Motor Lodge.
Her husband, Junior Koontz, preceded her in death June 28, 2003.
She is survived by two sons, Sam McCarty of Keyser, W.Va., and Roy Koontz of Nokesville; five daughters, Ava Eichelberger of Keyser, W.Va., Mildred Reedy of Bridgewater, and Barbara Koontz, Alice Casto and Helen Kuykendall, all of Romney, W.Va.; a sister, Mary Sions of Harrisonburg; 32 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Jerry Foust will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Monday at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, W.Va. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery in Old Fields, W.Va.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
David J. Howdyshell
David Junior Howdyshell, 73, of Lanham, Md., died March 23, 2003, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Mr. Howdyshell was born Aug. 29, 1930, in Bridgewater, and was the son of the late Jesse Lewis Howdyshell and Ina Moyer Howdyshell.
He was a fireman in Washington, D.C., and retired as captain after 23 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a Methodist.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Margaret Hedrick Howdyshell; three sons, David L. Howdyshell of Huntingtown, Md., Michael C. Howdyshell of Beltsville, Md., and Daniel E. Howdyshell of Prince Frederick, Md.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. M. Monroe Wright will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. today at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine, W.Va. with military rites by the combined veterans organizations of Pendleton County and the Sugar Grove Naval Security Group.

Shirley Arlene Barb, 66, of Hopkins Gap Road in Fulks Run, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at her home.
Funeral arrangements were pending Friday night at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
Chester W. Packard
Chester William Packard, 67, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003.
Mr. Packard was the son of Alice Packard of Midlothian.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Isabelle "Izzy" Packard; his children, Melody St. Clair and C.W. Packard Jr., both of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Kathy Whitlock of Chesterfield, Erik Packard of Powhatan, and Rebecca Goodpasture of Richmond; three brothers, John Packard of Broadway, Jim Packard of Ashland, and David Packard of Midlothian; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. today at The Church of God of Prophecy, 3400 Turner Road in Richmond, where visitation was held Friday.

Helen M. Tolle, 87, of Broadway, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Shirley A. Barb
Shirley "Dolly" Arlean Barb, 66, of Fulks Run, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Barb was born April 19, 1937, in Shenandoah County, and was a daughter of the late Paul Preston and Pauline Lindamood Estep.
She retired from Pilgrims Pride and had been employed at Valley Land Hardware in Fulks Run. She was a member of Mount Grove Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are her husband Buddy Carson Barb Sr.; two daughters, Sherri Lewis of Fulks Run and Shelia Baker of Harrisonburg; a son, Allen Foltz of Ashland; seven sisters, Jo Ann Phillips of Fulks Run, Gayettia Turner of New Jersey, Nancy Wortman of Vienna, Diana Grisby of Sperryville, Barbara Kaplinger of Staunton, Pam Fuqua of Broadway, and Beatrice Sager of Maryland; seven brothers, Harry Estep of Maryland, Preston Estep and Joe Estep, both of Centreville, Kenny Estep of Woodbridge, Dennis Estep of Mount Jackson, Charles Estep of Woodstock, and Eddie Estep of New York; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The Rev. James Dodds and Jerry Shiflet will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Grove Church of the Brethren in Fulks Run. Burial will be at Mount Grove Cemetery.

Helen M. Tolle
Helen M. Tolle, 87, of Broadway, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Tolle was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Logans Port, Ind., and was the daughter of the late Walter G. and Clara Renicker Wilson.
She retired from the H.D. Lee Company in Broadway and attended Broadway Baptist Church. She was a member of the BPW, the Broadway Rescue Squad Ladies’ Auxiliary, and the Broadway-Timberville Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a son, Donald Tolle of Timberville and three grandchildren.
Her body was cremated.
The Rev. Roger Austin will conduct a graveside service 2 p.m. today at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. today at the Broadway Baptist Church.
