Charlotte M. Dovel
Mrs. Charlotte McFall Dovel, 90, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday evening, Oct. 19, 2003, at Avante at Harrisonburg.
A daughter of the late Walton H. and Mattie Hanna McFall, she was born on Oct. 14, 1913, in Augusta County.
She graduated from North River High School and had been a homemaker. Mrs. Dovel had also been employed as a receptionist for the Lindsey Funeral Homes at the Weyers Cave and Bridgewater Chapels. She was a member of Mount Crawford U.M. Church.
On July 31, 1932, she married Frank T. Dovel, who preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1966. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Samuel W. Dovel in March 2001, and Thomas M. Dovel in October 2003.
Mrs. Dovel is survived by a daughter, Barbara D. Wyant of Reston, Va.; a son, Marvin E. Dovel of Stafford, Va.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Hosaflook of Weyers Cave and Hope Glover of Waynesboro.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Ned S. Van Dyck officiating. Private burial will follow in Mount Solon Community Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.

Thomas M. Dovel
Thomas McFall Dovel, 65, of La Mirada, Calif., died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003.
Mr. Dovel was born Aug. 10, 1938, in Mount Crawford, and was a son of the late Frank T. and Charlotte M. Dovel.
He graduated from Bridgewater High School and the University of Kentucky and served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from sales and was active with youth baseball.
He is survived by his wife, Amie Dovel; two sons, Sean Dovel and Jason Dovel, all of La Mirada, Calif.; a sister, Barbara D. Wyant of Reston; and a brother, Marvin E. Dovel of Stafford.
The funeral was held Oct. 8 in Whittier, Calif.
Florence J. Perkinson
Florence Joyner "Perky" Perkinson, 96, of the Bridgewater Home died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003.
Mrs. Perkinson was born Sept. 16, 1907, in Petersburg, and was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Joyner and Carrie Eva Bradshaw Joyner.
She was employed in the public schools in Alexandria for 22 years and in Charlottesville for eight years. She retired in 1972 as director of Textbooks and Audio-Visual Education. She was a member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Whitney Montague Perkinson, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Florence P. "Perkie" Ryan of Bedford; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Carroll Goodridge will conduct a graveside service 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Old Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg.
There will be no family visitation, but friends may call at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater any time today. The casket will be closed.

Alice W. Kessel
Alice Wolfe Kessel, 95, of Williamsport, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg, W.Va., where she had lived for the past two years.
Mrs. Kessel was born Feb. 29, 1908, in Bayard, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late William Edward Wolfe and Nora Smith Wolfe.
She was a member of Lahmansville United Methodist Church and was a 48-year member of the Moorefield Chapter No. 102 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 78 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 6454 of Petersburg, W.Va. She was a former member of the Lahmansville Homemakers.
Her husband, Arthur E. Kessel, preceded her in death April 13, 1961.
She is survived by two sons, L. Keith Wolfe of Petersburg, W.Va., and Harold J. "Donnie" Kessel of Williamsport, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kessel was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The Revs. Rebecca L. Bennett and Larry M. Cantu will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va. Burial will be at the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, W.Va.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Carroll D. Slater
Carroll D. "Bus" Slater, 73, of Land O’Lakes, Fla., and formerly of Baker, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at the University Community Hospital in Tampa, Fla.
Mr. Slater was born Dec. 6, 1929, in Baker, W.Va., and was the son of the late Theodore R. and Viola Pearl Stinacre Slater.
He graduated from Wardensville High School and retired as a chief mechanic for Northwest Airlines at Washington National Air Port. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 64 in Moorefield, W.Va.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Mary Vosburgh; a sister, Bernice Miller of Winchester; three nieces and two nephews.
The Rev. Alan Gray will conduct the funeral 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Loy-Giffin Funeral Home in Wardensville, W.Va. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

James F. Taylor Jr.
James Franklin Taylor Jr., 38, of 1302 E. Rocky Branch Road in Luray, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.
Mr. Taylor was born Aug. 31, 1965, in Havre de Grace, Md., and was the son of Patricia Ann Mayes Taylor of Rileyville and the late James Franklin Taylor Sr.
He was the owner and operator of a trucking business.
On Dec. 20, 2001, he married Cindy B. Barton, who survives.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by two stepsons, Aaron Johnson of Richmond and Timothy Johnson of Luray; and two sisters, Christina Francis Alger of Luray and Sharon Denise Presgraves of Rileyville.
The Rev. David Johnson will conduct a memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday at the Rileyville Baptist Church.

Ruth S. Lester
Ruth Shoemaker Lester, 87, of Harrisonburg, died Oct. 27, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for several days.
Mrs. Lester was born on Jan. 20, 1916, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Robert A. and Lucy Bowers Miller.
She was a homemaker and had worked as a kitchen assistant at the Bridgewater Home. Mrs. Lester was a member of the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, where she had participated in the Women’s Fellowship. She had most recently attended the Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren.
On Sept. 2, 1936, she married Glen W. Shoemaker, who preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1966. On Jan. 17, 1981, she married Irwin Eugene Lester, who preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1985.
Surviving are two sons, John R. "Jay" Shoemaker and his wife, Jackie, Harrisonburg, Richard Shoemaker and his wife, Pat, Penn Laird; two daughters, Betty Atkins and her husband, Mike, Harrisonburg, Kathy Halterman and her husband, Glenn, Monterey; two stepdaughters, Becky Lester, Courtland, Ohio, Carol Williams, Oklahoma; one brother, Nelson Miller, Edinburg; three sisters, Helen Allshouse, Albuquerque, N.M., Evelyn Turner, Fulks Run, Betty Skiffington, Fairfax; six grandchildren, James Robert McClure Jr., Bridgewater, Terry Lynn Layman, Harrisonburg, Craig Shoemaker, Chapel Hill, N.C., Todd Shoemaker, High Point, N.C., Amy Halterman and Travis Halterman, both of Christiansburg; four stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Mrs. Lester was preceded in death by six brothers.
The Revs. Jimmy Ross and Wayne Wright will conduct a memorial service Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren. A private graveside service at Mount Zion Cemetery will be conducted by The Rev. William John.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 8:30 at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. Friends may also call at the children’s homes at any time.

Ivan S. Shirk
Ivan S. Shirk, 88, of East Earl Township, Pa., died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at the home of his nephew, Samuel Ringler.
Mr. Shirk was born in Goodville, Pa., and was a son of the late Noah G. and Sue Etta (Shirk) Shirk.
From 1958 to 1976, he lived in Dayton, where he was a farm laborer. He returned to Lancaster County in 1976 and was a member of Spring Grove Mennonite Church in East Earl.
He is survived by a brother, Noah S. Shirk of Narvon.
The funeral will be held 9 a.m. Friday at the home of Samuel Ringler, 1454 Union Grove Road in East Earl, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Bishop Titus Martin will also conduct a service 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Spring Grove Mennonite Church. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Ruby E. Cooper
Ruby Estell Cooper, 59, of Woodstock, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Cooper was born December 20, 1943 in Luray, and was the daughter of the late Samuel R. and Harriet Tutt Veney.
She was a seamstress for over 24 years at Blue Bell in Woodstock, retiring in 1991.
Her husband, Robert Milton "Bobby" Cooper Sr., preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Robert Milton "Bobby" Cooper Jr. of Blacksburg; three daughters, Evelyn Denise Cooper of Woodbridge, Darlene Estell Cooper of Woodstock, and Roberta Ann Cooper of Basye; three sisters, Joyce Johnson of Luray, Norma Jean Cooper of Stephen City, and Roberta Jackson of Winchester; three brothers, Harry Veney and Aubrey "Nubby" Veney, both of Luray, and Leno "Bubba" Veney of Newport; and six grandchildren.
The Rev. Lucy Hughes and Pastor Otis Frye Jr. will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock. Burial will be at a later date in Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock.

Rebecca A. Tomlinson
Mrs. Rebecca Ann Dunkle Tomlinson of Lewisburg passed away September 30, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, Charleston, W.Va.
She was born at Deer Run, W. Va., November 7, 1938, the daughter of the late Newman Paul and Freida Harper Dunkle.
Mrs. Tomlinson was a 1960 Home Economics graduate from Berea College, Berea, Ky. She was a teacher, licensed veterinary technician, 4-H Extension Agent and mother who reared her family in the Greenbrier Valley. She was an active member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church having served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.
She was a 4-H pin wearer, a 4-H All Star, a member of the Franklin Chapter No. 138, Order of the Eastern Star, the Progressive Community Educational Outreach Service Club, a 4-H leader for 15 years and a member of Chapter F, PEO Sisterhood in Lewisburg.
She is survived by three daughters, Karen Farrell and husband Andy of Raleigh, N.C., Barbara Lee and husband Harvey of Centennial, Colo., Christine Revitte and husband Robert, also of Centennial, Colo.; and one son, Dr. John Robert Tomlinson Jr. of Lewisburg, W.Va.; and five grandchildren, Daniel and Ryan Farrell, Sophie and Charlotte Lee and Mary Ellen Revitte. She also is survived by a brother, Ralph Dunkle and wife Sally of Franklin, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 in the Lewisburg United Methodist Church. Burial will be held 4 p.m. in the Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract, W.Va.

Lottie M. Shifflett
Lottie Mae Shifflett, 91, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at the Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Shifflett was born on May 12, 1912 in Greene County, Va. and was the daughter of the late Lee and Lucy Ann (Breeden) Wise.
Her husband, Lloyd Shifflett, preceded her in death in 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Zada Johnson of Elkton; a son, Charles Shifflett of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Minnie Raines of Stanardsville; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Brother R. Wayne Kile officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
