Martin E. Morris
Martin Edward Morris, 88, of Harrisonburg, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Morris was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Mount Crawford, and was the son of the late Iveson and Betty Florence Huffman Morris.
He grew up in the Mount Crawford area and lived in Rockingham County most of his life. He was employed at Merck and Co., Mick or Mack stores, and retired from Kitchen Cook’d Potato Chips. After retirement, he worked for Virginia Courier Service.
Mr. Morris was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in Hawaii during World War II. He was past commander of the Carl D. Lee Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9872.
His wife, Charlotte Messick Morris, preceded him in death in 1995.
He is survived by two daughters, Beatrice A. Morris of Harrisonburg, and Linda M. Powell of Troy; a sister, Mary Smith of Fishersville; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The Rev. George Evans will conduct a graveside service 2 p.m. Monday at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Evelynne W. Branner
Evelynne "Evelyn" W. Branner, 88, of Fulks Run died Oct. 2, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Branner was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Broadway, and was the second oldest of nine children born to Allen Wilcher Whitmore and Kitty Aldhizer Whitmore.
Mrs. Branner had learned to love and care for children early in her life with a large family. After graduating from Madison College, she became an elementary school teacher, teaching mostly in Rockingham County for 26 years. When she came to the old Fulks Run School, there were two rooms and 7 grades. This is where she met her husband at a box social. Fulks Run eventually became home for the rest of her life. After retiring from teaching she continued to teach and work with children in her home. She did homebound teaching and also gave music lessons to many young children. She also was a great babysitter for neighbors as well as her own children. She was a member of Mount Grove Church of the Brethren in Fulks Run, where she played the organ and taught Sunday School.
On June 19, 1942, she married Earnest "Jim" Branner, who died on Sept. 30, 1996.
She left a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce B. and Paul H. Wilkins of Fulks Run; two sons, Johnny A. Branner of New Market and Jerry W. Branner of Fulks Run; two brothers, Raymond "Beck" Whitmore of Broadway and Jake Whitmore of Broadway; two sisters, Geneieve VanPatten of Broadway and Josephine Hutton of Timberville; eight grandchildren, Wes Branner, Tonya Branner, Dusty Branner, Danny Branner, Melissa Lester, Dominique Branner, Mike Branner and Laurie Branner; and eight great grandchildren, Derrick Branner, Ashley Branner, Christopher McPherson, Jeremy Lester, Justin Lester, Todd Branner, Dylan Branner and Brice Estes.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Branner; three brothers, A. Stratton Whitemore, Jack S. Whitmore and Alden Whitemore; and one sister, Nancy Whitmore Baker.
The Rev. Glen Turner and Jerry Shiflet will conduct a memorial service 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Grove Church of the Brethren. A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Grove Cemetery. The graveside service will be open to anyone who wishes to attend.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Friends may call anytime at the Branner residence, or at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Paul Y. Benner
Paul Yoder Benner, 93, of 847 Grant St., Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Benner was born March 13, 1910, in Souderton, Pa., and was a son of the late Charles and LeAnna Benner.
He was a hosiery knitter most of his adult life. He was an ordained deacon in the Mennonite Church and was an active member of Bethany Mennonite Church in Briery Branch until the time of his illness.
His first wife, Margaret May Longacre, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Martin Troyer; two sons, Richard Benner of Harrisonburg and Stanley Benner of Toronto; three daughters, Beatrice Benner of Vanderhoof, B.C., Florence Witmer of Broadway, and Louise Baerg of Langley, B.C.; two brothers, Marvin Benner of Earlington, Pa., and Willard Benner of Phoenixville, Pa.; three sisters, Irene Alderfer of Harleysville, Pa., Edna Styer of Hatfield, Pa., and Dorothy Shenk of Newport News; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Clair Heatwole, J.P. Campbell, Eldwin Campbell and David F. Showalter will conduct the funeral 2:30 p.m. Monday at Pike Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg.
A viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. A service will also be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vincent Mennonite Church in Spring City Pa., with Eli Slabaugh officiating. Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Q. McCartney
Dorothy Q. McCartney, 74, of Madison, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 9, 1929, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Meredith Quick and Ethel Marie Diehl Childress and wife of the late Charles E. McCartney.
Mrs. McCartney was a hairdresser in Harrisonburg for many years and was a former employee of Belks in Culpeper.
She is survived by two sons, Robert "Butch" May and wife, Sharon, of Mount Crawford, Gary May and wife, Derinda, of Harrisonburg; one stepson, Frank McCartney and wife, Julie, of Canton, Ill.; six grandchildren, Bobby May and wife, Tracey of Port Republic, Jason May of Harrisonburg, Ryan May of Mount Crawford, Rhianna May of Harrisonburg, Jessica and Steele Gamble of Nashville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren and many special friends.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dottie Marie Gamble and two sons, Stephen Paul McCartney and F. Douglas McCartney.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison conducted by the Rev. Henry Daniel Aylor. The interment will be private at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren at Port Republic, Va.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.

Ernest W. Fogle
Ernest W. "Jake" Fogle, 73, of Brookeville, Md., and formerly of Hardy County, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Md.
Mr. Fogle was born July 2, 1930, in Lost City, W.Va., and was the son of the late Paul C. and Mabel E. Bott Fogle.
He was a member of Howard County Antique Club, Local No. 77 Operating Engineers of Washington, D.C., and Jennings Chapel Church.
He is survived by his wife, Alma B. Fogle; two daughters, Nancy Cumberland of Woodbine, Md., and Donna Dodson of Gettysburg, Pa.; two sisters, Jean Teets of Lost River, W.Va., and Karen Swisher of Albermarle, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
The Rev. Ted Osgood will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the McKee Funeral Home in Baker, W.Va. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Lost River, W.Va.

Dorothy M. Breeden
Dorothy Marie Breeden, 59, of Elkton, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Funeral arrangements were pending Tuesday night at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
Paige F. Nash
Paige Figgatt Nash, 82, of Harrisonburg, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Nash was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Stanley T. and Amelia Loewner Figgatt.
She lived in the Harrisonburg area all of her life and graduated from Harrisonburg High School. She was a homemaker and enjoyed caring for her grandchildren.
On Oct. 10, 1945, she married Irvin F. Nash, who preceded her in death April 25, 1999.
She is survived by two sons, Darryl Wayne Nash of Harrisonburg, and Gregory Keith Nash of Atlanta, Ga.; a foster son, Michael Lee Ellis of Harrisonburg; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Erwin Helbraun will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. today at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Charles A. Wilfong Jr.
Charles Adam Wilfong Jr., of Sumter, S.C., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Wilfong was born in Harrisonburg, Va., and was a son of the late Ruth Clayton and Charles Adam Wilfong Sr.
He retired from the USAF as a Master Sgt. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and was an avid watercolorist. He was a member of the Sumter Artist Guild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Takako Inuzuka Wilfong.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Detrich Wilfong; two sons, Charles Michael Wilfong of Sumter and Robert Gregory Wilfong of Metaire, La.; a stepson, Seven Lee Cornish of Smyrna, Ga.; a daughter, Patricia Ann Wilfong Kunich of Newport News; a stepdaughter, Lori Ann Lloyd of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Cheryl Wilfong Will of Fort Defiance; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. today at the Church of the Holy Cross with the Rev. Richard B. Archer officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parish hall.

Mortimer W. Gamble IV
Mortimer W. "Bunkie" Gamble IV, 74, of S. Elm Street, Moorefield, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Gamble was born March 16, 1929, in Morgantown, W.Va., and was the son of the late Mortimer W. Gamble III and Virgie Ireland Gamble.
He graduated from Moorefield High School and West Virginia University, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the WVU Alumni Association. He was a retired senior engineering technician for the West Virginia Department of Highways and was a member of the Moorefield City Council. He was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, a member of the senior choir and a teacher in the Men’s Bible Class.
Mr. Gamble was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a platoon leader and company commander. He was a life member of the John M. Golliday Post No. 64 American Legion and the Denney-Moyers-Pratt Post No. 9606 VFW. He was also a member of the 40 & 8 Voiture No. 1535 and Company No. 582 Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a member of the Olivet Cemetery Board, Hardy County Health Department, Moorefield Sanitary Board, Love Memorial Clinic and Region VIII Health Advisory Committee.
On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Elaine Cole, who preceded him in death March 9, 1997.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Mortimer W. Gamble V of Fairmont, W.Va., and David Cole Gamble of Owings Mills, Md.; and a sister, Carmen Silliman of Moorefield, W.Va.
Pastor Braxton Garriss and the Rev. Randy Ours will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery with military rites by the U.S. Army and the Moorefield Veteran’s Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Fraley Funeral home in Moorefield, W.Va. A veterans memorial service will be held 7:30 this evening.

Janet H. Conrad
Mrs. Janet Harper Conrad, 86, of Fort Seybert, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin, W.Va.
She was born Feb. 7, 1917, at Riverton, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Wilber W. Harper and Margie E. Teter Harper.
She attended Berea College in Kentucky and graduated from Shepherd College. She was a teacher at Franklin Elementary School. She also served as West Virginia University’s extension agent in Pendleton County. During her tenure as extension agent, she created the Golden Age Newsletter, which was distributed throughout West Virginia. She was a member of the Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year plus member of the Extension Homemakers Club and was a member of the WV Farm Bureau. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
On Aug. 17, 1938, she married William Harrison Conrad, who preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1997.
Surviving are two sons, H. Stephen Conrad and his wife, Jane, of Fort Seybert, W.Va., Dr. Daniel H. Conrad and his wife, Odessa, of Midlothian, Va.; two granddaughters, Kelly Elizabeth Marsh of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Dawn Suzanne Conrad of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Mary Lee Eye of Franklin, W.Va.; and two brothers, Elwood N. Harper of Lilian, Ala., and Kenneth R. Harper of Franklin, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by one son, James William Conrad, two sisters, Freida Dunkle and Christina Harper, and four brothers, Wilbur Harper, Bardon Harper, George Harper and Paul Harper.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church at Fort Seybert, W.Va. Burial will be at the Fairview-Bethel Church Cemetery at Fort Seybert.

Gazel C. Moomaw
Gazel C. Moomaw, 101, of Orkney Springs, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Our Shenandoah Home in Timberville, where she had lived since November 2002.
Mrs. Moomaw was born June 10, 1902, in Orkney Springs, and was the daughter of the late James M. and Elizabeth Estep Funkhouser.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity (Powder Springs) United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years.
On Aug. 30, 1924, she married Otis Moomaw, who preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1989.
Mrs. Moomaw was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by a nephew, Fred G. Funkhouser of New Market, whom she raised.
The Rev. John Ware will conduct the funeral 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity (Powder Springs) United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
