Eddie H. Caul
Eddie H. "Sporty" Caul, 75, of Washington, D.C., died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003.
Mrs. Caul was born April 2, 1928, in Henderson, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Willie and Edward Harris.
She spent her early years in Harrisonburg and graduated from Lucy F. Simms School. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Virginia State University in Petersburg. She returned to Harrisonburg and was a kindergarten and first grade teacher. She also taught in the public schools in Staunton. She enhanced her study in education at D.C. Teachers’ College, Georgetown University, Trinity College and Howard University, where she earned her master’s degree. She was an educator in the District of Columbia Public School for 39 years, retiring in 1992.
Mrs. Caul was a faithful member of McKendree-Simms Brookland United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., and a member of the Chancel Choir. She participated in many community activities.
Her husband, Robert "Rich" Caul, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son, Jon Gregory Caul of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Helen M. "Bill" Harris of Harrisonburg; two nieces and a nephew.
A service was held Oct. 7 at McKendree-Simms Brookland United Methodist Church. Burial was at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md.
Arrangements were handled by The House of Williams Funeral Service.
Hildegarde A. Williams
Hildegarde Arnita Williams of Washington, D.C., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Southern Maryland Hospital.
Mrs. Williams was born in Bridgewater, and was the daughter of the late Robert and Bessie Burns.
She lived in Harrisonburg before moving to Washington, D.C., where she was a member of Campbell A.M.E. Church and active in the Flower Guilds Club. She was employed with D.C. Public Schools for several years before retiring.
Her husband, Randolph E. Williams Sr., preceded her in death.
She is survived by six children, Arnita Barringer, Randolph Williams Jr., Bernice Neal, Delores Jackson, Warren Williams and Doris Butler; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.
The funeral was held Oct. 24 at Campbell A.M.E. Church. Burial was at Washington National Cemetery, Suitland, Md.
Arrangements were handled by Tyrone J. Young Funeral Services in Washington, D.C.
James E. Frye Jr.
James Edward "Jim" Frye Jr., 52, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, as the result of an airplane crash.
Mr. Frye was born March 16, 1951, in Winchester, and was a son of the late James Edward Frye Sr. and Frances Schwiers Frye.
He was an appraiser for JEF Enterprises in Woodstock. He graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in 1969 and from James Madison University in 1975 with a degree in business. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wardensville, W.Va., where he was a past member of the church council.
Mr. Frye was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. He was a member of the U.S. Ultralight Association and the International Right-of-way Association, where he served as president, vice president and secretary. He achieved SRWA with expertise of the right-of-way laws and was a published author on rights-of-way. He was a former chairman of Ducks Unlimited and was an avid pilot for 26 years and a marksman.
Surviving are his wife, Monica Abbott Frye; two sons, Slade A. Levenson of Charleston, S.C., and Jesse R. Levenson of Wardensville, W.Va.; and two brothers, Joe Bill Frye of Morristown, Tenn., and Joshua S. Frye of Wardensville, W.Va.
Pastor John Taylor will conduct a memorial service 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wardensville.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, W.Va.

Carolyn Y. Dean
Carolyn Yvonne Dean, 45, of Shenandoah, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville from injuries she suffered following an automobile accident.
Mrs. Dean was born March 1, 1958, in McKeesport, Pa., and was a daughter of Henry C. Shifflett of Friedens, Pa. and Lena Smith Shifflett of Elkton.
She moved to the area 28 years ago from Somerset, Pa. and was a 1976 graduate of Elkton High School.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, James R. Dean; a son, James R. Dean II of Shenandoah; a daughter, Melissa Ann Bennett of Shenandoah; two brothers, Calvin W. Shifflett, of Friedens, Pa., and George F. Shifflett of Stoystown, Pa.; a sister, Marilyn M. Shifflett of Shenandoah and two grandchildren.
The Rev. Carter Dean will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Delphert P. Goertz
Delphert P. Goertz, 72, died Oct. 28, 2003, in Austin, Texas.
Mr. Goertz was employed at Dunham-Bush in Riverside, Calif. and Harrisonburg for over 24 years. He moved to Harrisonburg in 1971. He was a member of the Elks Club, the VFW and the American Legion, serving as commander in Post 79, Riverside, Calif. He spent winters in Central Texas.
He is survived by eight brothers and sisters.
Mr. Goertz was buried
at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockne, Texas.
