Paul W. Johnson
Paul William Johnson of Heathsville, Va., and formerly of Herndon, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003.
Mr. Johnson was a U.S. Navy veteran during Vietnam and served on submarines.
He was also a member of Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, ranger for Rice's Hotel-Hughlett's Tavern and a crew member of the Reedville Fisherman's Museum skipjack the Claude W. Sommers and Northumberland Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Rita W. Johnson, a daughter, Carrie Ann Mullins of Vail, Colo., two sons, Eric Allen Johnson of Reston and David Paul Johnson of Ashburn, and four grandchildren, Christopher, Kate, Sarah and William Johnson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 22, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Kilmarnock United Methodist Church in Kilmarnock, Va.
Internment was on March 24, 2003, at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon.
Irene W. Sanger
Irene Wilma Sanger, 72, of Reston, died March 22, 2003, at the Johnson Center in Sterling.
Born on June 13, 1930, in Weston, W.Va., to the late Edward and Rose Valenta Basista, she was a graduate of the University of West Virginia, magna cum laude, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa sorority.
She worked as a claims analyst for the National Association of Letter Carriers.
She was the beloved wife of William Sanger, mother of Pamela Sue Lowe, sister of Elizabeth Yanosky, and grandmother to Darla Elizabeth Lowe.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Herndon. Memorials may be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 432 Van Buren St., Herndon, Va. 20170, or the National Capitol Chapter of the MS Society, 2021 K Street, NW, Suite 715, Washington, D.C. 20006.

Kimberly A. Roe
Kimberly Anna Roe, 16, of Oak Hill died May 20, 2003, of liver cancer.
When first diagnosed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in February 2001, she was told that her cancer was so advanced that there was no treatment available that might help her.
With her family, she took a Make-A-Wish trip in March 2001 to the Italian cities of Pisa, San Gimigniano, Florence, and Venice.
After returning to Virginia, she was referred to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., for further treatment, including 24 courses of two types of chemotherapy and extensive surgery.
During this time, Kimberly participated in a PBS documentary about pediatric hospice care. She found the verses in II Corinthians 4:16-18 so pertinent to her situation:
"Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are see, but to the things that are unseen."
Kimberly lived in Reston and Oak Hill all her life, except the one year she lived with her family in Beijing, China. She was educated at home, and was active in the Reston Homeschool Group. Her special interests included piano and debate.
She is survived by her parents, Brian and Leslie Roe; an elder brother, Daniel, and a younger sister, Emily, all of Oak Hill; and by grandparents Maurice and Joyce Roe of Cumming, Ga., and Hugo and Doris Parkman of Stone Mountain, Ga.
Rose M. Lynch
Rose Mancini Lynch, 77, a resident of Herndon for 53 years, died on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at Cameron Glen Nursing Home. Mrs. Lynch was born Feb. 10, 1926 in Washington, D.C. to the late Giovanni "John" Piedro and Maria Rosario Caprio Mancini.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Pinckney Augustus Lynch; sons P.A. "Sonny" Lynch, Jr., of Herndon and David Allen Lynch of Frederick, Md.; two daughters, Cecelia Maria Beasley of Sterling, Va., and Brenda Colleen LaConia of Elkton, Va.; one brother Toni Mancini of Winchester, Va.; four sisters, Anna Peninger of Fulton, Md., Theresa Vogel of Silver Spring, Md., Carmella "Millie" Bikowski of Waldorf, Md., and Mary Goodger of Vienna, Va.
Mrs. Lynch is also survived by four grandchildren, Christine Brown, Matthew, Jessica and Pamela Lynch and five great-grandchildren, Nicholas Brown, Cabel Spence, Morgan Rose Lynch, Robert and Ashley Kraft.
Family received friends on Tuesday, May 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 pm. at the Adams-Green Funeral Home at 721 Elden St., n Herndon A Mass of Christian burial was held May 28, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Herndon where she was a dedicated member for more than 50 years. Bertie V. Kerns
Bertie Viola Kerns, 97, of Herndon, died May 20, 2003 at Reston Hospital.
Mrs. Kerns was born Dec. 25, 1905 in Bluemont, Va., to the late James Arthur and Laura Jane Willingham Allder.
She married Robert J. Kerns in 1925 and lived in Wheatland, Va., before moving to Sterling, Va. They lived until her husband's death in 1966, whereafter she moved to Herndon.
Mrs. Kerns was employed at Mademoiselle Cleaners in Herndon for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her two daughters, Helen L. Croson and Pamela L. Hawkins and one great grandson, Robert "Phooie" Brown.
Mrs. Kerns is survived by two granddaughters, Wendy M. Bernard and her husband Terry of Herndon, and Helen "Fuzzy" Brown and her husband Robert "Bucky" of Fulks Run, Va.; three great-grandchildren Debbie St. Clair of Berryville, Va., Vickie Ramirez of Broad Way, Va., and Robert Brown of Front Royal, Va., as well as eight great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Services were held May 24, 2003 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Va. Interment in Union Cemetery.
Robert Lawrence Cockrell
Robert Lawrence Cockrell, 75, formerly of Sterling died May 24, 2003 at his home in Pittsville, Va.
He was born May 18, 1928 in Herndon to the late Clerence and Lilly Mae Snider Cockrell. Mr. Cockrell is preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Farmer Cockrell.
He is survived by three sons, Dean Cockrell of Sandy Level, Va., a daughter, Sharon Ware of Brunswick, Md., 10 brothers and Sisters, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family received friends on Thursday, May 29 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 30 at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at Sterling Cemetery.

James A. Brooks
James A. Brooks, 61, of Herndon died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Brooks was born Jan. 27, 1942 in Lovettsville, Va., to the late Aubrey E. and Mable R. Frye Brooks.
He is survived by his wife Betty J. Brooks and children Joyce, Cathy and Jimmy, stepchildren Patricia, Tommy and Ronald Huntt. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by three stepsons: Frankie, Mike and Eldie Huntt, Jr., and one step grandson, T.J. Huntt.
Services were held at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon with interment in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
Nina F. Gibson
Nina Ford Gibson, 99, a former teacher at the Herndon Elementary and principal of Floris Elementary, died May 20, 2003 at Fairfax Hospital.
Mrs. Gibson was born in 1903 in Clifton, Va., to William and Annie Ford. She earned her teaching credentials at the Harrisonburg Normal School, which is now James Madison University. She began teaching in 1922 at the Herndon Elementary, which was a part of a consolidated school that housed all grade levels. Mrs. Gibson also served as principal of Floris Elementary School for 14 years until her retirement in 1966.
During her many years as a Herndon resident, Mrs. Gibson was active in the Fortnightly Club and the Home Interest Garden Club. She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Herndon, where she taught Sunday school, played the organ and directed the choir. She also gave piano lessons in her home.
Her husband, W. Ernest Gibson, whom she married in 1928 was a member of the Herndon Town Council for many years. The couple had no children. She is survived by her nieces Elizabeth Maconaughey of Annandale, Va., and Charlotte Hoover of Springfield, Vt. Arrangements by Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon.
Vance Hartke
Sen. Vance Hartke, 84, of Falls Church died July 27, 2003 of heart failure at Fairfax Hospital.
Four of Sen. Hartke's children live in Reston, and his brothers Paul and Keith Hartke own the Reston-based company National Realty company.
Sen. Hartke was born May 31, 1919 in Stendal, Ind.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Evansville College and a master's degree from Indiana University. He was also a United States Navy veteran of World War II and mayor of Evansville, Ind., from 1955 to 1958.
He served as the United States senator from Indiana for 18 years and created and served as the first chairman of the U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. He also served on the U.S. Senate Finance and Commerce Committees and the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging.
Sen. Hartke was candidate for president of the United States in the Democratic Primary in 1972.
Following the U.S. senate he became a partner of Hartke & Hartke Law Firm. He was also the author of four books.
Locally, Sen. Hartke was known for the annual beach party at his sons' Reston lakefront homes. The event attracted more than 1,000 people and also served as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
Sen. Hartke is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha, and seven children, Sandra Garcia of Boonsboro, Md., Jan Hartke of Reston, Wayne Hartke of Clifton, Keith Hartke of Reston, Paul Hartke of Reston, Anita Hartke of Gainesville and Nadine Hartke of Reston. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren.
The former senator was celebrated by the U.S. Senate on Monday, July 28 with a resolution honoring the memory of Sen. Hartke and his service in the Senate.
A memorial service will be held at National Funeral Home in Falls Church. Sen. Hartke will be buried
at Arlington National Cemetery.
Col. Joseph Ellis Skaggs Jr.
Col. Joseph Ellis Skaggs Jr., 84, of Reston died July 21, 2003 at his home. He was born on Sept. 26, 1918 in Leavenworth, Kan., to the late Joseph Ellis and Margaret Marshall Cole Skaggs.
Col. Skaggs served in the Army for 32 years. His tours included World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Among his many awarded are the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.
After retiring from military service he was employed by Bethel for 11 years as a logistician, working in Alaska and Saudi Arabia. He settled in Reston in 1985.
Col. Skaggs is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eileen K. Skaggs, and children, Joseph E. Skaggs III of Emigrant, Mont., Laura Skaggs McCord of Salinas, Calif., Stephen Skaggs of Madison, Wis., Kevin Skaggs of Madison Wis., David Skaggs of Sterling and Barbara Skaggs of Maui, Hawaii and Sean Skaggs of Solana Beach, Calif.
He is also survived by his brother, Addison Skaggs of Naples, Fla. and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 8:45 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Arlington National Cemetery.
Peter B. Holden
Peter Breck Holden, 56, of Sterling died July 22, 2003 at Loudoun Hospital. He was born Nov. 7, 1946 in Boston, Mass. to Herbert W. and Virginia Hill Holden.
He is survived by his wife, Kristen O'Connor Page and children, Peter Breck Holden Jr. of Burlington, N.C., Christian Peter Holden of Fort Myers, Fla., Jennifer Hill McKean of Ashburn, and step-children Zachary David Page of Blacksburg and Erin Hillary Page of Sterling. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Holden of Cummington, Mass., Nancie Cooper of New York City, N.Y. and Wendy Johnson of Warrenton.
The family received friends and funeral services were held July 26 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon.
Albert Harris Sr.
Albert Harris Sr, 85, of Wardensville, W.Va. died July 26, 2003.
He was born June 16, 1918 to the late Raymond and Sarah Harris. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Gertrude Harris.
He is survived by five daughters, Margaret A. Brent of Herndon, Mary K. Woodard and Lucinda L. Plummer of Washington, D.C., Sylvia B. Lucas of Leesburg, Amanda J. Harris of Herndon; two sons, Albert S. Harris Jr. of Lubbock Texas and Raymond C. Harris of Clinton, Md.
He is also survived by two sisters, Helen Johnson of St. Louis, Va. and Sarah V. Mudd of Winchester and 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.
A wake was held July 30 at Lyles Funeral Chapel in Purcellville. Funeral services followed the wake, with interment at Allum Bank Cemetery in Wardensville.
Eva Ione Fitzgerald
Eva Ione Fitzgerald, 97, formerly of North Dakota and resident of the Washington, D.C., area for 20 years, died Nov. 19, 2003, at Cameron Glen Care Center in Reston.
She was born Aug. 14, 1906, in Huff, N.D., to the late Jesse Hart and Mary Eva Schmidt Collis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd E. Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by her daughters, Leola Tobin of Bismarck, N.D., and Gloria Church and her husband Maury of Oak Hill, and 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She is also survived by one sister, Bernice Lanz of Mandan, N.D.
