Arabelle Stearns
Arabelle Lyman Stearns, 88, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at her home, as was her wish, following a brief hospitalization. Ms. Stearns was born April 3, 1918, in New London, Conn., where she grew up. She lived in Fairfax County for over 50 years, mostly in Holmes Run Acres, where she had many close friends, and then for the last four years at her daughter's house in Herndon.
Ms. Stearns was an art major in college, and throughout her life used her talents to create many beautiful and unique items, such as hand-painted figurines made from ordinary small rocks. She graduated from Bradford Junior College, attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, and studied medical drawing at Johns Hopkins University.
She loved getting to know people, and for over 20 years enjoyed driving a school bus for Fairfax County Public Schools and talking with all the students that rode her bus. After retiring from that job, Ms. Stearns was a volunteer at Fairfax Hospital for over 15 years, where she made many new friends among the staff and patients.
After leaving her volunteer job several years ago, she found joy in writing and receiving letters to keep in touch with her many friends that had moved to other places. Ms. Stearns was a very caring and unselfish person who will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Ms. Stearns is survived by her daughter, Susan Page of Herndon, three grandchildren, Ben, Jon and Sam Page, all of Herndon, her son, Christopher Stearns of San Diego, Calif., her sister, Jean Lanxner of Silver Spring, Md., her brother, William Lyman of York, Maine, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service and celebration of her life is being planned for March 31, 2007. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to S.O.M.E. in Washington, D.C.
Nadine Chartier Westphal
Nadine Chartier Westphal, 44, of Herndon, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md. She was born Feb. 21, 1962, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Westphal was the wife of Jim Westphal; mother of Britany and Logan Westphal, both of Herndon; daughter of Roland and Virginia Chartier of Louisa, Va.; sister of Rona Smartt of Johnstown, Pa., and Roland Chartier Jr. of Troy, Va.
Mrs. Westphal attended both Radford University and James Madison University. She worked for the past seven years as an instructional designer for NEW, Inc., in Sterling. The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 19, and Wednesday, Dec. 20. Services were held at Oakbrook Church Wednesday, Dec. 20. Interment followed at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Oakbrook Church.
Glen A. Shenk
Glen A. Shenk, 55, of Herndon, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Center. He was born Oct. 20, 1951, in Virginia to the late Malcolm and Eileen Rice Shenk. Mr. Shenk was the husband of Mary S. Shenk; brother of Terry Greenstreet of Woodstock, Va.; and grandson of Millie Rice of Woodstock, Va.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Dec. 21, at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contribution may be made to Friends of Homeless Animals, P.O. Box 2575, Merrifield, VA 22116.
Norman Carl Alfredson
Norman Carl Alfredson of Herndon died Dec. 13, 2006, at his residence. He was born Sept. 24, 1938, in Lakota, N.D., to the late Adolph and Agnes Lein Alfredson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Katherine Alfredson. He is survived by two daughters, Julie Hazen of Lovettsville, Va., and Kirsten Robinson of Belgium, and four grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Swanson and Dolores Johnson.
The family received friends Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. A graveside service was held at Chestnut Grove Cemetery Thursday, Dec. 21. Robert Clyde 'Bobby' Richardson Jr.
Robert Clyde "Bobby" Richardson Jr. died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at Mary Immaculate Hospital after a short illness. He was born March 27, 1933, in Baltimore, Md., the oldest son of the late Robert Clyde Richardson Sr. and Audrey Elizabeth Frantum.
Mr. Richardson was married to Delores Willidean Curry for 49 years, prior to her death in October 2002. He was a Peninsula area resident for many years. He served in the U.S. Army and started working at the Newport News Shipyard in 1951. Mr. Richardson retired from the shipyard in 1995, after 44 years of continuous service. He was recently a trolley driver in Yorktown, Va., for the county of York.
Mr. Richardson was a past president of the York Lions Club and received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award from the Lions Club in 1998. He was a past master of the Yorktown Masonic Lodge No. 205. He was the president of the United Methodist Men and a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers, Albert Earl Richardson and Lloyd Kenneth Richardson. Mr. Richardson is survived by two sisters, Audrey Evernia Curry of Hampton, Va., and Carolyn Jane Haupt of Abingdon, Md.; four children, Carolyn Delores Lewellen and her husband, Everett, of Gloucester, Robert Clyde Richardson III and his wife, Kim, of Herndon, Deborah Lynn Mueller of Seaford and James Earl Richardson and his wife, Judy, of Grafton; 13 grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Chapman of Newport News, Jaime Patricia Chapman of Richmond, Joshua Madison Lewellen and Jacob Andrew Lewellen of Gloucester, Shannon Sue Richardson, Karey Ann Richardson, and Ashley Lynn Richardson of Herndon, Joseph Charles Mueller, Kenneth Samuel Mueller and Steven Michael Mueller of Seaford, Stephanie Nicole Richardson, James Earl Richardson, Jr. and Megen Michelle Richardson of Grafton; one sister-in-law, Barbara Richardson of Roanoke; and one brother-in-law, Boyd H. Curry of Hampton; and three half-brothers, David McCafferty of Harrisonburg, Dennis McCafferty of Lynchburg and Roger McCafferty of Harrisonburg.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m. in Providence United Methodist Church in Grafton, Va., with Rev. Kay Barstow-Gentry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Friday, Dec. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Amory Funeral Home in Grafton.

John Preston Woodward Sr.
John Preston Woodward Sr., 54, a resident of Ashburn since 1989 and owner of Preston Electrical Services in Ashburn, died Dec. 13, 2006, in Lansdowne. Mr. Woodward was born in Middleburg, Va., to the late Isaac R. and Clara Nalls Woodward on Aug. 31, 1952.
He had lived in the Washington, D.C., area all of his life. Mr. Woodward enjoyed spending time at his country home in Del Ray, W.Va., and he was a coach with Dulles Little League Baseball from 1996 to 2001.
Mr. Woodward is survived by his wife of 16 years, Melody G. Woodward of Ashburn; three children: Tara Busby and her husband, Jason, of Arlington, John "JP" Woodward and Melinda Woodward, both of Ashburn; one sister, Clara Saunders of Gambrilles, Md.; one brother, Dickie Woodward of Harford, N.C. and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Dec. 16 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel with Rev. Cary Johnson officiating. Beverly Lee Glass
Beverly Lee Glass of Reston died Jan. 6, 2007, at Reston Hospital. Mr. Glass served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. There will be a visitation from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Adams-Green Funeral Home, located at 721 Elden Street in Herndon. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Quantico National Cemetery.
Clarence Everett Jackson
Clarence Everett Jackson, 92, of Herndon and formerly of Kokomo, Ind., died Feb. 21, 2007, at Blue Ridge Christian Home in Bealeton, Va. He was born August 22, 1914, in Otwell, Ind., the son of Joseph and Opha Mae (Sorgius) Jackson. On August 20, 1949, in Princeton, Ind., he married Leona Esther Lowe who preceded him in death on October 14, 1995.
He was a 1935 graduate of Otwell High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Oakland City College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University School of Business in 1941 and a Doctorate of Law degree from IU in 1943, graduating with honors. During that same year he was admitted to the bar and became a practicing attorney. While taking his law classes, he also taught at the university. During World War II he was asked to leave his teaching position and work for Republic Aircraft in Evansville, Ind., where he was head of production for the P-47 Thunderbolt. In 1951 he graduated with Master of Science degree in education at IU.
Mr. Jackson went to Kokomo and, along with his wife, taught for Kokomo Center Schools, retiring in 1982 after 33 years of service. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Phi Beta Kappa while attending IU, and a faithful member of the coffee club that met at Pizza Hut North, Isaac Walton League, Kokomo Teachers Association and past president. Mr. Jackson was an avid hunter, but his real passion was for fishing. He fished the remote lakes of Ontario, Canada, for more than 25 years. He and his wife were also very active travelers. They visited all 50 states, every Canadian Province, 11 countries in Europe, and every U.S. battlefield.
He is survived by his daughter Nancy Jackson Loughin, who works for The Observer Newspapers as their food editor, and her husband J. Curtis; grandsons, David Matthew Loughin and Michael Joseph Loughin; and brothers Harold Jackson and Denzil Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother Cecil Jackson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo, Ind., with Rev. Harold Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora, Ind. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Kenneth Minor Kidwell
Kenneth Minor Kidwell, of Colonial Beach, Va., and formerly of Herndon, died Feb. 24, 2007. He was born in Herndon on May 10, 1928, to the late Clarence and Isabel Kidwell. Mr. Kidwell retired after 42 years with Virginia Concrete and moved to Colonial Beach where he enjoyed riding around the beachfront.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily, son, Wayne, stepfather, Howard Plotner, and second wife, Lucille. He leaves behind five children, Dale and his wife, Karen; Ralph and his wife, Pati; Janet Sams and her husband, Terry; and Vickie and Daryl Kidwell; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Thompson and Ruby Bowers; one brother, Ray Kidwell; longtime friend and caregiver Edna Motley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Feb. 28 at Adams-Green Funeral Home where services were held March 1. Interment will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon. Memorials may be made to the heart or lung association of your choice.
Harriet Geneva Hunt
Harriet Geneva Hunt, 71, of Reston, died Feb. 22, 2007, at her home. Born in Herndon, she was a lifetime area resident. She had attended the Virginia School of the Deaf & Blind in Staunton, Va., and attended the First Baptist Church of Herndon. She was employed as a cartographer for the U.S. Geological Survey.
She was the daughter of the late Robert E. Lee and Laura Cross Hunt. She is survived by two sisters, Laura Lee Simpier and Janice Hunt Giuliano, and two nieces, Cindy G. Murvine and Deborah Munchenbach.
Memorial services were held at First Baptist Church of Herndon and burial was at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions are being requested to the Virginia School of the Deaf & Blind in Staunton.
Samuel Hodges Chang
Samuel Hodges Change, age 12 weeks, died Feb. 26, 2007, in Herndon. He was born on Dec. 1, 2006, in Reston.
Samuel was the beloved son of George and Jennifer Hodges Chang, brother of Alexander Chang, grandson of Su Tai and Rosa Chang of Windermere, Fla., Walter and Betty Hodges of Glade Hill, Va., great-grandson of Nui Oi Chan of Washington, D.C., and nephew of Yvette Schwee and her husband, Mickey, of Winter Springs, Fla., Yvonne Chang-Wahl and her husband, Bill Wahl, of Windermere, Fla. He was also survived by several cousins.
The family will receive friends Saturday, March 3, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Adams-Green Funeral Home, located at 721 Elden Street in Herndon, where funeral services will be held at 4 p.m.

Leroy John Day
Mr. Leroy John Day, 77, a resident of Arlington, died May 25, 2007, in Arlington. Mr. Day was born in Hamilton, Va., to the late Julius Perry and the late Martha Day on June 30, 1929. His wife, Doris Ann Day, also predeceased him.
Mr. Day worked with Cartwell's Slaughter House in Hamilton for many years before moving to Arlington and beginning his career with the Browhill Apartments in Arlington.
He is survived by his two sisters, Maxine and her husband, Arthur Phillips of Leesburg and Bertha Day of Ashburn; one brother, Leonard and his wife Glory Day of Detroit, Mich.
The family received friends at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Hamilton on June 1 with funeral services at the church on June 2. Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hamilton.
James Curtis Brown
Mr. James Curtis Brown, 64, of Leesburg, died May 30, 2007, at Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation in Leesburg. Born June 9, 1942, in Loudoun County, he was a son of the late Lee Benjamin Brown and the late Martha Elizabeth (Allen) Brown.
Mr. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church at Sycolin. He worked as a cook for the Goose Creek Country Club and as a custodian for the FAA in Leesburg. He had also worked for M Page Oriental Rugs in Leesburg.
He is survived by his two daughters, Nessa L. Andrews and her husband, Ronald, and Cheryl Jansen and her husband, John, both of Virginia Beach; eight sisters: Martha Barbra of Leesburg, Rosie Ramey of Leesburg, Nancy Petite of East Orange, N.J., Mary Kelly of East Orange, N.J., Lucille Lee of Leesburg, Sue Brown of Silver Spring, Md., Catherine Hoy of Leesburg and Elizabeth Scott of Atlanta. He is also survived by a brother, Louie Earl Brown and his wife, Kathleen, of Leesburg; sister-in-law Mae Brown of Montclair, N.J.; four grandchildren and one great grandson. Mr. Brown is also survived by his lifelong friend Rocky of Leesburg. He was predeceased by a brother Thomas Brown of New Jersey.
The family received friends Monday at Loudoun Funeral Chapels, where funeral services were also held. Interment was held privately. Conations may be made in his memory to Capital Hospice.
James Pfiester
James M. Pfiester, 87, died June 1, 2007, at the residence of his daughter. Mr. Pfiester was a resident of Lansdowne, Va. Mr. Pfiester was an administrator in the Civil Service with a dedicated career of 34 years before his retirement. He was a member of PAX Catholic Community in McLean and the Knights of Columbus, and he served as a lobbyist for AARP.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Metzger Pfiester. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Pfiester; his daughters, Mary P. Bailey of Ann Arbor, Mich., Carole P. Jennings of Silver Springs, Md., Sharon A. Coleman and Susan P. Anders, both of Virginia Beach and Lorraine F. Moore of Stafford; stepdaughter Noreen Roubian of New Heartford, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren with another on the way.
A mass of Resurrection was conducted at the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach on Monday, and a second service was held at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Sterling Wednesday with interment following in the National Memorial Park in Falls Church. The family also received friends Tuesday at Loudoun Funeral Chapel. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or a hospice of your choice.
Louise Virginia Bushrod
Louise Virginia Bushrod, 59, of Herndon died May 23, 2007, at Reston Hospital. Born in Leesburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank Willis and Julia V. Baker Allen. She was the mother of Karen, Timothy and Cheryl Bushrod; sister of Bettye L. Wallace, with who she lived, and Lloyd Allen. She was also the grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of four. Services were held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Vienna and burial was in Oak Grove Church Cemetery.
Riain McBride
Riain Patrick McBride, 64, of Leesburg, died of a heart attack July 23, 2007, at Loudoun Hospital Center’s Cornwall Unit in Leesburg. Born Aug. 28, 1942, in Washington County, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert McBride Jr. and the late Elizabeth Ann (Marble) McBride. Formerly a longtime resident of Warrenton, Mr. McBride had lived in Loudoun County since 2002. He worked for Global Computer Enterprises in Herndon as a documentation manager. Memorial Services were held Aug. 4 at his home.
Doris Hoffman
Doris Haiston Hoffman, a former flight attendant with United Airlines and longtime member of Clipped Wings, died Aug. 10, 2007, of congestive heart failure at the age of 85. She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and graduated from Christian College in Columbia, Miss., and University of Nebraska with a degree in education. She studied ballet in New York City and was accepted by the Radio City Rockettes Ballet Company before joining United Airlines in 1942.
She met and married Jack M. Hoffman in 1944 and had seven children. She was actively involved in fundraising for many charitable organizations, especially for the mentally challenged. A rose garden was dedicated to her for her lifetime of work in 2003 at the Northern Virginia Training Center in Fairfax. Her husband preceded her in death in 1996 after 52 years of marriage. She lived in Reston for 22 years and was a parishioner of St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church.
She is survived by her sister, Joanne O’Brien of Billings, Mont.; children: Brian Hoffman of Rockville, Md.; Cheryl Russell of Clarksburg, Md.; Leslee King of Fairfax; Luellen Maskeny of Fairfax; Patrick Hoffman of Bethesda, Md.; and Michael Hoffman and William Hoffman, both of Fairfax; grandchildren: Keith and Kevin King, and Karen King Hodson; Chris and Colleen Russell; John and Mark Maskeny; and Matthew, Spencer and Landon Hoffman; and great-grandchildren Jack, Luke and Thomas King.
The family received friends Sunday, Aug. 12, at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Aug. 13, at St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Capital Hospice or the Northern Virginia Training Center.
Eric Jones
A 23-year-old Herndon man died July 13 after a car crash in the Franklin Farm area. Eric Alexander Jones was turning onto West Ox Road from Monroe Street when he lost control of his 2001 Chrysler Sebring and crossed into oncoming traffic lanes.
Police said a 56-year-old Herndon man, who was driving a 2002 Yukon Denali, swerved to miss Jones' vehicle, and the two vehicles hit each other slightly. Police said the Sebring continued out of control, sliding into the grass where it struck a tree near Point Rider Lane.
Jones did not appear to be wearing his seat belt, police said. There was no alcohol involved in the accident, but speed courd have been a factor, according to police. The driver of the Denali was not injured and no charges were placed.
Jones was born in Fairfax County on March 26, 1984. He was raised in the Herndon area and attended Fox Mill Elementary School and Franklin Farm Middle School. He also attended Oakton High School and graduated from Westfield High School in 2002.
Ralph Jones said his son was a sports enthusiast who loved to play soccer and was part of the team at Westfield, where he played midfield. "He was an exceptional soccer player," he said.
Eric Jones' mother, Patty Jones, said he started playing soccer in about first grade and he grew up with many of his team members. He also played on the Herndon Hornets travel soccer team for many years under the direction of coach Paul Holland, Patty Jones said.
"He really loved and respected his coach of all those years," Patty Jones said. "That team was like one big family to us, the parents and the players."
Eric Jones also enjoyed watching professional sports teams, such as the Washington Redskins, DC United and the Wizards, and his father said he was already talking about the Redskins training camp that begins in late July. Patty Jones said that even as a child, Eric Jones would write letters to the Redskins and receive their autographs.
In addition to sports, Eric Jones loved music, his mother said. "He just absolutely loved music, and especially Bob Marley, that was his favorite," she said. Patty Jones said her son had a Bob Marley cap with fake dreadlocks attached and he even grew his own dreadlocks once.
His father described him as a "fitness guru" who worked out every day and had worked at several local gyms, including the YMCA, Fitness First and Worldgate Sport & Health. Patty Jones said her son was very concerned about the health and wellbeing of himself and his family, and he would often recommend vitamins and exercise programs to her.
Jones' parents said he loved children, especially his mother's nieces, and would sometimes baby-sit his friends' children. Patty Jones said one of the last photographs they found on Eric Jones' digital camera was of his friend's little boy.
Jones was a student at Northern Virginia Community College and a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston. He loved the beach and lived in Key West, Fla., and Ocean City, Md., for some time, his mother said.
"He had a great zest for life and he tried to live each day to its fullest," Patty Jones said.
In addition to his parents, Eric Jones is survived by his maternal grandmother, Rose Tulenko of Latrobe, Penn.; and many aunts and uncles, including Tony and Christi Tulenko, Commander Edward and Connie Tulenko, Stephen Tulenko, Clair and Noreen Jones, Ned and Deborra Jones, Angie and Bob Gault, Jane and Paul White, Barbara Kelley, Mary Beth and Bill Yaeger, Bonnie Travis and Pam and Mike Cox. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Nick Tulenko, and his paternal grandparents, Ralph and Mary Jane Jones. The family received friends July 16, 2007, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston where a Mass of Christian Burial was held July 17. Interment was private.
