Nancy Foglesong
Nancy F. (Furr) Foglesong, 63, died July 4, 2007. Born Aug. 22, 1943, Ms. Foglesong was a lifelong resident of Leesburg. She was a daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Furr. Since January 1969, Ms. Foglesong was employed by Loudoun Hospital. She also served as a member of the Lady's Auxiliary for the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company.
She is survived by her son, Bo Foglesong and his wife, Laurie, of Leesburg; brother, Mickey Furr, and his wife, Brenda, of Charles Town, W.Va.; nephew, Mickey Shane Furr of Simpsonville, S.C.; and niece, Maribeth McDonald of Leesburg. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Brittany and Tyler Foglesong, niece, Abby McDonald, and nephews, Seth and Blake Furr.
The family received friends July 10 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, where funeral services were held July 11. Interment followed at Union Cemetery in Leesburg. Donations may be made in her memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 1400 K Street, NW, Suite 725, Washington, D.C. 20005.
Helen May Jackson
Helen May Jackson of Great Falls died July 9, 2007, at Loudoun Nursing and Rehab Center in Leesburg. She was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Dranesville, to the late Charles Edward Gardner and Allie Thompson Gardner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Jackson, and one grandson, Ryan Jackson. She is survived by two sons, Ralph W. Jackson, and his wife, Lynn, of Great Falls, and Gregory Jackson and his wife, Judy, of Winchester. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Dan and his wife, Nikki, Ted and Emily and one great grandson, Jake. A graveside service was held July 12 at Arnon Cemetery in Great Falls. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Arthritis Foundation.
Imogene Kidwell
Imogene Kidwell, 69, of Winchester died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at the University of Virginia Hospital. Mrs. Kidwell was born May 25, 1938, in Sutton, W.Va., to the late Lee and Sylvia Adkins McKinney.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Kidwell; two daughters, Bertie Lockhart and Sherry Jones; a brother, Russell McKinney of Clay, W.Va.; two sisters, Audrey Kelly of Ocala, Fla., and Dana Miller of Looneyville, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Cory Jones and Briana and Braiden Lockhart.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Adams-Green Funeral Home, located at 721 Elden Street in Herndon. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
William L. Hill
William L. Hill, 72, of Ashburn, died July 8, 2007, in Ashburn. He was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Canton, Miss., to Leon Hill and Isola Caldwell hill. He is survived by his wife, Rosie M. Hill; children, Gwendolyn Hill of Abington, Md., Kristen Hill of Ashburn and Keith Hill of Columbus, Ga.; sisters, Dorothy Grandberry of Detroit, Mich., and Gladys Archer of Inster, Mich.; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of other friends and relatives.
The family received friends July 13 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sterling, where funeral services were also held. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
Patricia P. Hollar
Patricia P. Hollar, 66, of Sterling, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Loudoun Hospital Center. She was the wife of G. William Hollar; mother of Susan Hollar and Valerie Hollar (Cris) Ellington; daughter of the late George and Christine Wallace Palmer; and grandmother of Garrett, Davis and Natalie. The family received friends Thursday, July 19, at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Sterling Rescue Squad.
Richard James Ball Jr.
Richard James Ball Jr., 52, of Herndon, died suddenly March 15, 2008, after a short illness. He was born Sept. 24, 1955, in Buffalo, N.Y. Mr. Ball graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1977 and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a mechanical engineer by the Naval Sea Systems Command's Division of Naval Reactors for more than 30 years. In recent years, he coached several Chantilly Youth Association teams and was an avid soccer player and fan.
Mr. Ball was the husband of 21 years of Rita Ball, father of Stephanie Ball and Brendan Ball, both of Herndon, son of Richard J. Ball Sr. and the late Margaret Ball and brother of Thomas Ball.
The family received friends Thursday at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Veronica's Catholic Church, located at 3460 Centreville Rd. in Chantilly. Interment will immediately follow at Fairfax Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Ball's honor to the charity of your choice.
Harold 'Hal' Hurwitz
Harold "Hal" Hurwitz, 79, died of a heart attack March 24, 2008, at his home in Herndon. Mr. Hurwitz grew up in Boston, but he was a longtime resident of Herndon. He was a retired staff sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, and following duty in West Germany, he moved to the local area when assigned to the Pentagon in the early 1970s. After a brief residence in McLean, he moved to Herndon in 1976.
Mr. Hurwitz spent much of his time in the Air Force as a computer programmer. His military career also fostered his lifelong interest in space and space exploration. Following his retirement, Hurwitz worked locally both for Computer Science Corporation and the National Wildlife Federation, each in a computer programming capacity. More recently, he was a volunteer with the local Fairfax County court system and also he served for many years as a citizen liaison volunteer with the Herndon Police Department.
He is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Goldoff and Rena Price, both of Atlanta. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. May 6 at Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel in Arlington, followed by burial at Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. May 5 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Nancy Fleeter
Lifelong ballet devotee Nancy Fleeter died of cancer April 11, 2008, in her Reston home. Mrs. Fleeter, 52, retired due to illness in 2007 as chief financial officer of AeroAstro, an Ashburn satellite-building firm she co-founded in 1988 with her husband, Dr. Rick Fleeter.
After earning her MBA at the University of Southern California, Mrs. Fleeter held a number of executive positions in major American fine arts organizations. Between 1989 and 1999, she served as chief financial officer for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She later became CFO and general manager of the American Ballet Theater in Manhattan, returning to Northern Virginia in 2004 to work at AeroAstro with her husband, who is an engineering professor and author.
Mrs. Fleeter was devoted to ballet since age five, when she began her dance training. When cancer treatments reduced her ability to dance and bicycle, Mrs. Fleeter swam a mile three times a week.
In the last three years of her life, she did pro bono work for Maryland Youth Ballet, managing its finances and serving as a board member. Memorial donations may be sent to the Nancy Fleeter Costume Fund, Maryland Youth Ballet, 926 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Fleeter is survived by her mother Anita Hartman, of Encino, Calif., sisters Karen Hartman, of New Brunswick, N.J., and Jeanne Hartman of Los Angeles and a brother, Richard Hartman, of Sedgwick, Colo. Her late father, Sherman, was a surgeon in Los Angeles.
Nelson R. Workman
Nelson R. Workman Jr., 63, died April 11, 2008, at his home in Sterling. Mr. Workman was born Oct. 29, 1944, in Sutton, W.Va., a son of the late Nelson R. Workman Sr. and the late Mary Tinney Workman.
Mr. Workman served his country in the U.S. Army. Since 1991, Mr. Workman has been the founding owner and operator of Cardinal Heating & Cooling in Sterling. He has been a past sponsor of the Upper Loudoun Baseball.
He is survived by his wife Marlene A. Workman of Sterling; his son Tod and daughter-in-law Meredith Workman of Round Hill, and son Ron and daughter-in-law Kimberlee Workman of Phoenix, Ariz., and his sister-in-law Mary Louise Kaylor of Sterling.
Mr. Workman is also survived by six siblings, Jerry Workman of Winchester; Brenda Alvin of Zelienople, Pa., Thomas Workman of Sterling, Diane Schleicher of Pittsburgh, and Dale and David Workman, both of Winchester. Four grandchildren, Tyler and Kyle Workman, Hannah Hall and Aaron Workman, also survive him.
The family received friends April 13 at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, and funeral services were held April 14. Graveside services and interment were at National Memorial Park in Falls Church. Donations may be made to Evercare Hospice.
Walter Edward Madden Sr.
Walter Edward Madden Sr., 52, of Luray, Va., died Dec. 20, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Linda Madden, and sons, William T. Carter and his wife, Christy, Christopher W. Carter and his wife, Shannon, and Walter E. Madden Jr. and his wife, Angela Madden. His seven grandchildren-Tyler, Cody, Sean, Cassie, Zoe, Symantha and Shelby-also survive him. Additionally, he is survived by seven brothers and three sisters. His family received friends at Adams-Green Funeral Home, where funeral services were also held, on Dec. 23.
Milo L. Flagel
Milo L. Flagel of Fort Collins, Colo., died at his home May 30, 2008. Mr. Flagel was born in Leavenworth, Wash., on Dec. 18, 1935, to John and Elsie Flagel. He grew up in Cashmere, Wash., and graduated from Cashmere High School. Mr. Flagel had his own television repair shop in Cashmere for several years, and he served in the U.S. Navy for four years as an aviation electronics technician.
Mr. Flagel earned a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology from Capitol Institute of Technology in Washington, D.C., and in 1972 he earned his BSEE from The George Washington University. Mr. Flagel worked as an electrical engineer for TRW until his retirement on disability in 1993. He and his wife, Paula, raised their two daughters in Herndon, where they were active members of Christ the Redeemer Church in Sterling. In 2006, Milo and Paula Flagel moved to Fort Collins, Colo., to be closer to family.
Mr. Flagel was the husband of 38 years of Paula M. Flagel. He is also survived by daughter Katrina Helen Placer and her husband, Robert, of Trenton, N.J.; daughter Emily Robin Gouldey and her husband, Andrew, of Fort Collins, Colo. and their two children, Lauren and Evan Gouldey. Mr. Flagels parents, John and Elsie Flagel and his brother, Stanley Flagel, preceded him in death. Also surviving him are his brother Jerry Flagel and his wife, Joanne; his brother Jim Flagel and his wife, Janet; his brother Ed and his wife, Marlene; his sister Shirley Kikuchi and her husband, Mike; and 12 nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial and interment were held in Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins. Mr. Flagel was buried
with full military honors. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel in Fort Collins. A memorial service is planned for June 28 at 11 a.m. at Dryden Community Church in Dryden, Wash.
Richard 'Dick' T. Gray
Richard "Dick" T. Gray of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Herndon, died March 27, 2008. He was born Dec. 5, 1946, in Erie, Pa. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Von Ohlsen, sons Eric (Darcy) Gray and Andrew Von Ohlsen, daughter Cynthia Von Ohlsen, brother Tom Gray and niece Taylor, and former wife Carol Gray.
Joanne S. Johnson
Joanne Steinmayer Johnson, 75, died June 11, 2008, in Reston. Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Charles J. and Ruth Valara Fox Steinmayer, and she was born Sept. 5, 1932, in Philadelphia. Mrs. Johnson lived in Northern Virginia most of her adult life, and she was a proud member of AA for 20 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Andrew Chandler Johnson in March 2007 and son Andrew C. Johnson Jr. in April 1999. Mrs. Johnson is survived by three children, Richard C. Johnston of San Ramon, Calif., Jennifer A. Bailey of Ashburn and Cynthia L. Murdoch of Williamsburg. She is also survived by her brother Charles J. Steinmayer Jr. of Elkins Park, PA, and six grandchildren.
The family received friends June 13 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg. A memorial service was held June 14 at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Ashburn. Donations may be made in Mrs. Johnson's memory to the American Lung Association, 9221 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, VA 23235.
Sheila Petit O'Leary
Mrs. Sheila Petit O'Leary died March 27, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in New York, N.Y., to William Petit and Marjorie Florance Hall. She lived most of her life in New York. Mrs. O'Leary also lived in Herndon for 20 years. She was a member of the Town Council and was active in many community organizations. She retired from US Airways in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. O'Leary is survived by her husband, John; four children, Elizabeth, Daniel, Marjorie and Niel; three grandchildren, James, Dylan and Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Steffanie; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral was held April 1 at Holy Family Catholic Church, and interment followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Henry Philip Gilbert Sr.
Henry Philip Gilbert Sr., 94, of Sunrise Assisted Living in Reston and formerly of Washington, D.C., died Saturday, May 10, 2008. He was the husband of the late Mary E. Gilbert; father of Henry P. (Chip) Gilbert Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Oak Hill, and William E. Gilbert and his wife, Francine, of Herndon; grandfather of Laurie Rosser, David Gilbert, Cassandra Gilbert and James Gilbert and great-grandfather of Patrick and Matthew Rosser.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 500 W. University Boulevard in Silver Spring, Md., where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
Capt. Wallin Dodd Holtgren
Capt. Wallin Dodd Holtgren, 79, of Sterling, died April 24, 2008, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Holtgren was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Passaic, N.J. He was the only son of the late Walter Oscar Holtgren and the late Emma Catherine Taylor Holtgren. Capt. Holtgren graduated in 1951 from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. He served his country in the U.S. Navy, obtaining the rank of commander.
In the early 1960s, Mr. Holtgren worked for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. He then worked for the Naval Sea Systems Command until his retirement in 1986. His family said he also enjoyed working part time as captain and engineer for various boat companies on the D.C. waterfront, including the Wilson Line, and he liked being a member of the Potomac River Pilot's Association.
Capt. Holtgren was recently preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Holtgren, who died April 1. He is survived by his son Walter Dodd Holtgren and his wife, Kimberly, of Crofton, Md.; his daughter Pamela Mary Holtgren of Sterling; and his two grandchildren, Kyle McKain Holtgren and Kerra Morgan Holtgren.
A celebration of Mr. Holtgren's life will be held at 3 p.m. May 18 at Capital Yacht Charters, located at Yacht Basin No.1, Washington Marina, 1300 Maine Ave., SW, in Washington, D.C. Graveside services and interment will be held July 24 at 3 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Walter Hatton
Walter L. Hatton, 60, formerly of Herndon, died May 1, 2008, at the Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He was born Feb. 24, 1948, in Harrisonburg, Va. Mr. Hatton attended Herndon High School before he joined the United States Army. From 1967 to 1969, he served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Mr. Hatton worked as an electrical contractor, and his family said he loved to fish, garden and watch sports, especially the Redskins.
Mr. Hatton was the father of Sharon Searl of Georgia and Debbie Wester of Texas; son of Ruth E. Hatton of Topping, Va., and the late Charles R. Hatton; brother of Earl F. Hatton of Sterling and Sandy Jenkins of Hume, Va. The family received friends Wednesday at Adams-Green Funeral Home, where funeral services were also held. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Virginia Division, Inc., Northern Virginia Area, 124 Park Street, S.E., Vienna, VA 22180.
Barbara Ely Waterman
Barbara Ely Waterman died May 4, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Herndon. Mrs. Waterman was born April 23, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She earned a teaching license from New York University. Mrs. Waterman was a teacher for many years and became director of the Langley School in McLean, where she served from 1951 to 1964. Upon retiring, she became active with the Fairfax Hospital Auxiliary and was honored with "Auxilian of the Year" for her many hours of volunteering. In 1988, she moved to Warrenton, where she continued volunteering at the Fauquier Hospital and the adult day care center (Shadow Lawn) and with the Head Start program.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oran H. Waterman, in 1989. She is survived by a son, John Waterman (Betsy) of Ocala, Fla., and two daughters, Joan Trudeau (Jack) of Rockville, Md., and Jeanie Gordon (Larry) of Herndon. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A private family service will be held. Interment will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon.
Rebekah Sue Hutchinson
Rebekah Sue Hutchinson, 67, of Taneytown, formerly of Sterling, died May 3, 2008 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Born Oct. 26, 1940, in El Centro, Calif., she was the daughter of the late A.D. and Dorothy Carnes Mahaffey. She was the wife of Col. Thomas F. "Tom" Hutchinson Jr., whom she married Jan. 27, 1962.
As a professional organist and choir director for about 50 years, Mrs. Hutchinson played for many churches, including Grace Episcopal Church in Brunswick, Md., and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon, as well as in churches in the Philippines and Germany. Additionally, as a military wife, she traveled with her husband in his military career and was a director of music and organist for several U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force chapels. She attended San Diego State College where she majored in music. Her family said she also enjoyed needlework and embroidery and produced plays and musicals.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters, Catherine Guldemond of Murphy, N.C., Laura Becraft and Deborah Villegas of New Windsor, Md.; son Thomas F. Hutchinson III of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; sister Raphael Hargraves and brother Allan D. Mahaffey of San Diego; in-laws Thomas F. Hutchinson Sr. and Lillian Leccy Lott Hutchinson of San Diego; seven grandchildren; one niece and one nephew. Donations may be made in Mrs. Hutchinson's honor to any local music program.
Angel R. Guzman
Angel R. Guzman, 56, of Reston died April 22, 2008, at Reston Hospital Center. He was born Dec. 1, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Angelo and Maria Perez Guzman. Mr. Guzman was father of Angela Guzman of Arlington, Va., and April Alicea and her husband, Edwin, of Cecilia, Ky.; brother of Elizabeth Guzman of Puerto Rico; and grandfather of Jeremiah. The family received friends April 25 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. Services and interment will be private. Manuel Gene Reed
Manuel Gene Reed of Chester, Va., died April 28, 2008. He and his family moved to Herndon in 1976 and settled in the Tylinda Estates across from Herndon High School. Mr. Reed enjoyed collecting and restoring antique farm machinery and displaying it throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Recently, he and his wife moved to Chester, Va., to be closer to family. Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Marilyn Jean Reed, and his son, Martin Earl (Sheila) Reed. A visitation was held on Thursday. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon. Interment will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Dale M. Cook Sr.
Dale Maynard Cook Sr., 81, who retired from the Navy in 1970 after a 24-year career, passed away at home in Herndon on April 18, 2009.
Mr. Cook, born on April 14, 1927, in Cadillac, Mich., entered the Navy in December 1945 and retired to the Fleet Reserve as a Ôgold-striped' first-class boatswain's mate after several enlistments in 1970. Following his 24-year Navy career, Mr. Cook trained to be a chef, taught his skills as a culinary arts assistant at Cape May (N.J.) Vocational Training School between 1971 and 1973, worked in several dining establishments in the Cape May area prior to becoming a business owner with his wife, Mary, in 1978, when they purchased the 4 G's Restaurant (later Mary & Dale's) in Rio Grande, N.J. After selling the restaurant in 1995, Mr. Cook and Mary remained in North Cape May, N.J., until they relocated to Virginia in 2008. While living in North Cape May, Mr. Cook and his wife also owned the Saddic guest house in Cape May.
During his Navy career, Mr. Cook served in a variety of ships including the battleship USS IOWA (BB-61) and was a ÔPlank Owner' of USS SARATOGA (CVA-60). His cruises were in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and Mediterranean Sea. He was able to visit various countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and North America. He crossed the equator to become a "Shellback," crossed the Arctic Circle to enter the Northern Domain of the Polar Bear and become a "Blue Nose," and crossed the 180th Meridian to enter the "Realm of the Golden Dragon." He was also present at the Bikini Atoll test.
He is survived by his wife, Mary J. (Saddic) Cook, to whom he was married in June 1949. He is also survived by his two children Jan (Tirrell) and Dale Jr.; four grandchildren, Janet, Bill Jr., Michael, and Elizabeth; and eight great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacob, Caitlyn, Bryce, Joshua, Sophia, William III, and Adrienne. He was predeceased by his parents Elmer and Alma (Simons) Cook, his brother Denny, his sister Barbara, and one great-granddaughter, Alexandra.
The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at Adams Green Funeral Home in Herndon followed immediately by a brief memorial service. The funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 24, at the Greek Orthodox Parish, 21580 Atlantic Blvd., Building D, Unit 160 in Dulles.
Interment is scheduled for Monday, April 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va. Memorials may be made in Mr. Cook's name to Dormition of Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst St., Winchester, VA 22601.
Gloria M. Parr
Gloria M. Parr, formerly of Elgin, Ill., died on Monday, April 20, 2009, at her home in Gainesville. She was the wife of Jack M. Parr, mother of Kathryn Parr Adams and her husband, Chris, of Herndon, and David Parr of Atlanta; grandmother of Jack, Susanna and Daisy Adams; sister of Ronald Kraus of Menasha, Wisc.
She was a past member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 24, at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St. in Herndon. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1090 Sterling Road in Herndon.
Interment will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
