George Lewis
UNION, W.Va. - George Elmer Lewis, 69, of Sweet Springs, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, follow a short illness.
He was born in Virginia May 18, 1935, a son of the late Carl Edward and Ellen Howard Lewis.
Mr. Lewis was a retired employee for Security Storage at Arlington and was a member of the National Rifle Association and the AARP.
He was preceded in deth by a son, Perry Allen Lewis and a sister, Anna Klassen.
Surviving is a son, George Michael Lewis of Ashtabula, Ohio; three sisters, Wanda Whitlock of Kent, Ohio, Debbie Crislip of Gap Mills and Phyllis Faudree of Sweet Springs; five grandchildren, Michelle, Phyllis, Angel, Mark and Jessica; one great-granddaughter, Shannon; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Mark Smearman officiating.
Burial will follow at the Carmel Cemetery, Gap Mills.
Friends may call at Groves Funeral Home in Union, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday.
Bill Mays
Mr. William Ryland “Bill” Mays, age 75, of Moneta, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 in Fort Myers, Fla. He was the husband of Eunice Wilhelm Mays.
Mr. Mays was born March 22, 1930 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Harry Alexander Mays, Sr. and Nora Keyser Mays.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Edgemont Associate Reform Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ed Nicholson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dan Gillette.
Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon following the interment in the Ragsdale Fellowship Hall of Edgemont Associate Reform Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to the Covington Rescue Squad, 435 W. Spencer Barber Jr.
Spencer R. Barber, Jr., age 76, of 111 E. Hawthorne Street, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. He was the husband of Cornelia “Connie” Barber.
Mr. Barber was born May 7, 1928 in Covington, the son of Spencer Barber, Sr. and Mary Cardwell Barber.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Thomas S. Simmons Jr. officiating. Interment will br in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Pallbearers will be Alfred Helton, Daniel Tyson, Dwayne Johnson, Cleveland Tyson, Lorenza Ross and Jimmie Barber.

Anna Nearhood Childs, 88, of 10135 Lake Jackson Drive in Manassas, and formerly of Covington and Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005.
She was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Detroit, Mich.A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will be in Lone Star Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Noe, Kevin Noe, Keith Noe, Steve Prokop, and Richard Cranford.

Janet Dorcus
Janet West Dorcus, 64, of 826 Long Ave. died Saturday, April 9, 2005, in Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem.

Carl Harouff
HOT SPRINGS - David “Carl” Harouff, 91, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and formerly of Hot Springs, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Fort Wayne.
He was born May 16, 1913, in Burnsville, a son of the late David Christian and Lucy Brisco Harouff.
Mr. Harouff was a baker for the The Homestead Resort until he retired after 47 years of service. He served his country during World War II as a member of the U. S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church. He served the church as a Sunday school teacher superintendent. He was a member of Valley Springs Masonic Lodge No. 265 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 186, for 50 years. James W. Gardner Encampment, Clifton Forge Canton, P.M. No. 22, Hot Springs Rebekah Lodge No. 64 and the Modern Woodsman of America.
Mr. Harouff was the last surviving member of eight sons in his family.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Frances Decker Haroff of Fort Wayne. The Harouffs were married Dec. 3, 1939. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Dale Schaefer of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, David Schaefer, Derrick Schaefer, Hope and husband Ben Eastman; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Eastman.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the McLaughlin Funeral Home Chapel, Ashwood, with the Rev. Debbie Carey and Jimmy Green officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Criser, Denny Hansford, Walker May, Julian Griffin, Jack Woodzell, Jimmy Green, Donald Lee Altizer, Bobby Thomas and Dale Loan.

Mr. Larry Ray “Popcorn” Payton, age 65, of 802 N. Rockbridge Ave., died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at his residence.
He was the husband of Wilma Jean Lepley Payton.
Mr. Payton was born Nov. 4, 1939, in Alleghany County, the son of Georgia Dressler Payton and the late Robert Ray Payton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating. Interment will follow in Mount. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery.Graveside rites will be conducted by the Covington Fire Department and the National Guard.

Lora Iva “Jane” Hepler Stone, 74, of 2311 Snake Run Road, died Monday, October 24, 2005, at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.
She was born January 1, 1931, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Harvey Lee and Mary Reynolds Hepler.
Mrs. Stone was a member of Dunlap Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Day “Jack” Stone, in 1994; six brothers, Alfred Hepler, Preston Hepler, David Hepler, Eugene Hepler, Dewey Hepler , Johnny Hepler and one sister, Juanita Arthur..
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Anita Stone of Covington; four grandchildren, Valerie Jack and her husband, Robert, Christie Simmons and her husband, Chuck, Linda Stone, and Raymond “R.C.” Stone, all of Covington; 3 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Hepler and Howard Hepler, both of Covington; one sister, Ethel Daisy Armentrout of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jackie Lee Adkins, 58, of 112 N. Magazine Street, died Monday, December 12, 2005, at his residence.
He was born October 20, 1947, in Greenbrier County, W.Va., a son of the late Cecil W. and Beulah Spade Adkins.

The interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Melvin Proffit
ROANOKE - Melvin Francis “Bub” Proffit, 86, of Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005.
He was born in Roanoke June 19, 1919, a son of the late John F. and Pearl Proffit.
Melvin was also preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Ferguson Proffit; and a brother, Ernest M. Proffit.
He was a retired manger with Lowe’s Companies and served in the United States Army During World War II in the 29th Division, 116th Infantry, and also played in the U.S. Army Band.
Melvin is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna Proffit Vaughn and Stephen Vaughn of Eagle Rock; a son, Paul F. Proffit and his fiancé, Mary Mann, both of Roanoke; six grandchildren; Ehren Vaughn of Eagle Rock; 1st Lt. P. Tyler Vaughn (Lisa), U.S. Army and Lewisburg, W.Va.; Heather Vaughn Keffer (Matt) of Roanoke; Stephanie Vaughn of Roanoke, Elizabeth Summer Proffit of Virginia Beach; Nicholas Alex Proffit of Roanoke; three great-granddaughters, Quinn Vaughn, Chloe Keffer, both of Roanoke; and Sydney Vaughn of Lewisburg, W.Va.; three sisters, Helen Stultz and Betty Mann, both of Roanoke; and Doris Phillippi, of California, Md.; several nieces and nephews and a special friend and companion, Mary Walthall of Salem.
