Elizabeth Lunceford
Gas company employee

Elizabeth W. Lunceford died Jan. 21, 1998.

She had worked for Suburban Propane for 36 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, O.B. Lunceford.

Pastor I. Everett Hughes Jr. led a graveside service Jan. 24 at Warrenton cemetery.

George Ashby
Carpenter/farmer

George Edward Ashby, 66, of Marshall, died Jan. 24, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mr. Ashby was born at Edgeworth Farm in Orlean and worked as a carpenter and farmer. He was a member of Orlean Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Turner Austin Ashby of Marshall; four children: George Edward Ashby Jr. of Marshall, Carolyn L. Ashby Early of Broad Run, Laurie Dean Ashby Williams of Berryville and Joseph Lynn Ashby of Marshall; his mother, Louise Reid Ashby; a brother, Irving Seldon Ashby; a sister, Marguerite Ashby Miller; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Irving Council Ashby.

The Rev. Angus McDonald led a graveside service Jan. 26 at Orlean Cemetery.

Richard Utterback Jr.
Truck driver

Richard "Ricky" Edward Utterback Jr., 39, of Bealeton, died Jan. 23, 1998, at Brandy Station.

Mr. Utterback was born in Remington on May 27, 1958. He worked as a delivery truck driver for Suburban Propane Gas in Gainesville. He was a member of Midland Church of the Brethren where he served as an usher. He enjoyed playing and coaching softball and going to the beach.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Edward Utterback Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Louise Utterback of Warrenton; a son, Terry R. Utterback of Bealeton; and two sisters, Laura L. Haley and Jackie Russell, both of Bealeton.

The Rev. Kendal Elmore and the Rev. Carolyn Elmore will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Midland Church of the Brethren. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Carol Davis
Teacher

Carol Lynn Davis, 37, of Brandy Station died Jan. 23, 1998, at her home.

Ms. Davis was born in Malone, N.Y., on Oct. 11, 1960. She was a teacher at Grace Miller Elementary School in Bealeton. She was a member of Midland Church of the Brethren and a receptionist at Old Town Athletic Club. She was preceded in death by her father, George Davis.

She is survived by her mother, Betty S. Davis of North Bangor, N.Y.; two brothers, Paul A. Davis of Malone, N.Y., and Gary J. Davis of Catlett; and two sisters, Sandra L. Pietra of Bradford, Pa. and Barbara J. Randall of Boscowan, N.H.

The Rev. Kendal Elmore and the Rev. Carolyn Elmore will lead a memorial service at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Grace Miller Elementary School in Bealeton. Interment will be private.

John Williams
Insurance manager

John Ferguson Williams, 79, of Clinton, Md., formerly of Marshall, died Jan. 24, 1998, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Md.

Mr. Williams was born Aug. 31, 1918. He worked as an insurance company manager.

He is survived by three sisters, Susie W. Jones of Hyattsville, Md., Media Herbert of Marshall and Nannie Dodson of Middleburg.

Pastor Lindsay Green and the Rev. Douglas Gore will lead a funeral service at noon, Thursday, Jan. 29, at Mount Morris Baptist Church in Hume. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. until noon, Thursday. Interment will be in Mount Morris Cemetery in Hume.

Grafton Gaines
Justice department employee

Grafton Lee Gaines, 82, of Washington, D.C., formerly of The Plains, died Jan. 18, 1998, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Md.

Mr. Gaines was born Nov. 8, 1915. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then worked for the Department of Justice and the Office of the Solicitor General as an aide to Robert F. Kennedy and Archibald Cox. He also served as personal aid to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

He is survived by a brother, Walter H. Gaines of Sharon Hill, Pa.

The Rev. Lloyd O. Roberts led a funeral service Jan. 23 at Israel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Interment was in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md.

Mary Payne
Warrenton resident
Mary Frances Payne, 72, of Warrenton died Jan. 11, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. Payne was born March 6, 1925.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Payne of Warrenton; four sons: John Swann of Marshall, Moscow Minor of Warrenton, Michael Minor of Reston and Mathew Minor of Woodbridge; five daughters: Rosetta Hamm of Front Royal, Martha Boyd of Aldie, Barbara Bailey of Hamilton, Mary Gaskins of Centreville and Mildred Minor of Manassas; 22 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Joynes Funeral Home in Warrenton. The Rev. Richard Hardy will lead a funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Joynes Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Minor family cemetery in Warrenton.

Vernon Barron
Rental manager

Vernon "Jack" LeRoy Barron, 68, of Warrenton died Jan. 12, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Barron was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Fauquier County, the son of the late Robert Moncure Barron and Blanche Elizabeth Barron.

He was the rental manager for Leach Rental Co. in Warrenton for 12 years. Prior to then, he had been the former owner and operator of Earle's Texaco in Warrenton for 12 years.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda S. Barron of Warrenton; two daughters, Shawn R. Barron of Manassas and Kim D. Barron of Warrenton; two sisters, Dorothy Smoot of Falls Church and Barbara Clark of Remington; and a brother, George J. Barron of Lorton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, where the Rev. Sam P. Jones will lead a funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Warrenton Baptist Church, 123 Main St., Warrenton, Va. 20186.

James Woodson
Middleburg horseman

James "Bowie" Woodson, 60, of Middleburg died Jan. 8, 1998.

Mr. Woodson worked as a groom.

He is survived by two sisters, Alberta King of Warrenton and Dorothy Woodson of Fredericksburg; and three brothers: Robert Woodson of Rectortown, Franklin Woodson of The Plains, and Milton Woodson of Leesburg.

The Rev. Theodore Haley led a memorial service Jan. 12 at Royston Funeral Home in Middleburg. Interment was in Solon Cemetery.

Ashley Pettway
Warrenton infant

Ashley Lynn Pettway, 4 months old, of Warrenton died Jan. 9, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

She is survived by her parents, David and Lisa Ann Chladek Pettway of Warrenton; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Nancy Chladek of Manassas; her paternal grandparents, Keith and Barbara Pettway of Cleveland, Miss., and Emily and Ed Kedcierski of Warrenton; and her great-grandparents, Juanita and Donald Burke of Strasburg, Elizabeth and Jerome Chladek of Milwaukee, Evelyn Horn of Milwaukee, and Alice Pettway of Vicksburg, Miss.

The Rev. John Lillie led a funeral service Jan. 14 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Warrenton. Interment was in Bright View Cemetery in Warrenton.

Margaret Cropp
Church member

Margaret Lucille Cropp, 87, of Hartwood died Jan. 11, 1998, at Fredericksburg Nursing Home.

Mrs. Cropp was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Fauquier County, the daughter of the late Archie and Ethel Anderson. She was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Somerville. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Wilbur Cropp.

Mrs. Cropp is survived by a daughter, Barbara Herndon of Manassas; three sons: Robert L. Cropp of Catlett, George W. Cropp of Manassas and Roger D. Cropp of Hartwood; three sisters: Chloe Croft of Vero Beach, Fla., Ernestine Beach of Hartwood and Lula Pearson of Fredericksburg; a brother, Leon Anderson of Midland; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service took place Jan. 14 at Grace United Methodist Church in Somerville. Interment was in the church cemetery.
