Elmer Foster

Elmer Willis Foster, 84, of Warrenton died Feb. 16, 1998, at her home.
Miss Foster was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Remington, the daughter of the late Milton Elmer Foster and Edith Foster. She was a graduate of Remington High School, Farmville State College in Farmville, and had completed some graduate work at the College of William and Mary. She was a teacher and librarian in Fauquier County Public Schools, working at various schools in Calverton, Bealeton, Warrenton and at Fauquier High School. She was an active member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church and a volunteer with the Fauquier Hospital Auxiliary, working in the gift shop at the hospital.
She is survived by a sister, Edith Boyer of Washington, D.C.
The Rev. John Chadsey will lead a funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at Warrenton United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Remington Cemetery.

Mary Embrey

Mary E. Embrey, 85, of Catlett, died Feb. 3, 1998, at the Birmingham Green Nursing Home in Manassas.
Mrs. Embrey was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Midland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil E. Embrey, her parents, George W. and Mary Susan Shackelford Embrey, two brothers, Earl M. and Frank S. Embrey, and a sister, Nancy L. Ripley.
She is survived by a son, Howard M. Embrey of Sumerduck; two daughters, Margie L. Heflin of Catlett and Linda Hays of Spotsylvania; a brother, Ralph Embrey of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place Feb. 7 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.

Norma Church
Hospital volunteer
Norma R. Church, 90, of The Plains, died March 31, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Church was born in Willoughby, Ohio, on Oct. 8, 1907. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Church. Mr. and Mrs. Church lived in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, almost 40 years before retiring to The Plains in the early 1970s.
Mrs. Church belonged at various times to the Fauquier Hospital Auxiliary, the Friends of the Fauquier Library and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an avid reader and a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by a son, Hank Church of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Eugenie C. Mayo of Dedham, Mass.; five grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Warrenton Presbyterian Church.

Ashton Wood

Ashton B. Wood, 74, of Manassas died March 31, 1998, at Shawnee Springs Home in Winchester.
Mr. Wood was born May 5, 1923, in Marshall, a son of the late Daniel W. and Mammie B. Carter Wood. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He owned and operated Woody's Auto Repair in Fairfax for 17 years until his retirement. He was a member of New Life Assembly of God Church in Herndon and served on the advisory board for the past nine years.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Wood of Manassas; a daughter, Brenda Peake of Manassas; three sons, Charlie Wood of Springfield, Thomas Wood of Sterling Park and Danny Wood of Manassas; two sisters, Ann Ait of Herndon, and Etta Wilson of Woodstock; two brothers, Welford Wood of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Bob Wood of Bethpage, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
The Rev. David Carter and the Rev. Roger Walters led a funeral service April 4 at Belvoir Assembly of God Church near Marshall. Interment was in Marshall Cemetery.
Cecil Cooper Jr.

Cecil Cooper Jr., 64, of Roanoke died April 2, 1998, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Mr. Cooper was born July 24, 1933 in Montgomery, Ala., a son of the late Cecil Cooper and Eula Mae Renshaw Cooper.
He is survived by a daughter, Sandra Gentry of Amissville; two sisters, Mary Cooper and Margaret Wilkens, both of Delaware; and one granddaughter.
Pastor Charles Shifflett led a funeral service April 6 at Found and Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Culpeper National Cemetery.

Roger Holmes

Roger Lee Holmes, 63, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Loudoun County, died April 3, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Holmes was born April 15, 1934. He worked as a bellhop.
He is survived by three sisters: Maggie Basil of Bluemont; Dorothy Peterson and Mary Jones, both of Lanham, Md.; three brothers: Richard Holmes of Middleburg, Rodney Holmes of Oxen Hill, Md., and Robert Holmes of Alexandria.
Pastor Calvin E. Cage Sr. will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 9, at Meridian Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Interment will be in Rock Hill Cemetery in Bluemont.
Gloria Wilkerson

Gloria Carter Wilkerson, 36, of Marshall died May 2, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Wilkerson was born Dec. 12, 1961. A 1979 graduate of Fauquier High School, she worked as a desktop publisher. She was a member of the Mount Morris Baptist Church in Hume, where she sang in the Young Adult Choir, the Gospel Choir and served on the Junior Usher Board.
She is survived by her husband, Alex Wilkerson of Manassas; her mother, Barbara Carter of Marshall; and a sister, Cheryl Polk of Marshall.
Pastor Lindsay Green led a funeral service May 6 at Mount Morris Baptist Church in Hume. Interment was in the Mount Morris Community Cemetery in Hume.
Robert Bassett Sr.

Robert L. Bassett Sr., 74, of Jeffersonton died April 30, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Bassett was born in Seymour, Conn., on Dec. 14, 1923, the son of the late Sidney S. Bassett and Bessie Myers Bassett. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired from KAMAN Aerospace as director of sales. He moved to Virginia from Bloomfield, Conn., in 1995. He was active in Fauquier Habitat for Humanity and was a volunteer with the Fauquier Hospital Auxiliary. He was a member of Warrenton United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jean W. Bassett of Jeffersonton; a daughter, Carole Rainey of Holidaysburg, Pa.; two sons, Robert L. Bassett Jr. of Oakton, and Scott Bassett of Jeffersonton; two sisters, Evelyn Horton and Eleanor Dorman, both of Florida; and four grandchildren.

Raymond Gill

Raymond Warren Gill, 74, of Warrenton died May 2, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Gill was born in Fauquier County on June 20, 1923, the son of the late Sidney Burns Gill and Alice Gill. He worked as a horseman, caring for horses, and later for ponies owned by Mrs. Viola Winmill at Whiffletree Manor Farm on Springs Road. He worked there as a young man, then served in the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II. After Mrs. Winmill's death, Mr. Gill was employed with the former Arrington Motor Sales in Warrenton until his retirement about 10 years ago.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Beatty and Alice Gill Cassius, and a brother, Charles S. Gill. He is survived by his wife, Louise Payne Gill of Warrenton; a son, Raymond W. Gill Jr. of Fredericksburg; a daughter, Beverly G. Yowell of Marshall; five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Caroline Bartlow Adams, 81, of Warrenton died April 29, 1998, at INOVA-Fairfax Hospital.
Mrs. Adams was born in Michigan on May 19, 1916, the daughter of the late Frank Bartlow and Charlotte Bartlow. She was retired from the Ford Motor Co. as a supervisor in the payroll division, having worked there for 35 years. She was a member of the Warrenton Church of Christ, Scientist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William James Adams. She is survived by a daughter, Carol A. Rosner of Broad Run; a son, James Adams of The Philippines; and four grandchildren.
