Frances Cowne

Frances Walker Cowne, 92, of Marshall died May 4, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Cowne was born in Marshall on March 1, 1906, the daughter of the late John F. and Grace Holmes Walker. She was a charter member of the Eastern Star, a member of Marshall Baptist Church, the Electa Rebekah of Warrenton and the Senior Citizens Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Cowne, in 1995.
Mrs. Cowne is survived by her caregiver for many years, Robin Pauley, and a cousin, William Lawlor of Warrenton.
The Rev. Randy Daniels will lead a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 7, in the chapel of Royston Funeral Home in Marshall.

Louise Edwards
Bealeton resident
Louise James Edwards, 88, of Bealeton died May 5, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Fauquier County, Mrs. Edwards was the daughter of the late Custis and Alberta James of Morrisville. She was a member of the Morrisville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlin Edwards, and a daughter, Ida Wilhelmena Carberry.
She is survived by her children: William Allan Edwards and Barbara Edwards Kirtley, both of Sumerduck, and Charles Carlin Edwards Jr. of Bealeton; three brothers: John H. James, Glen E. James and Wilbur H. James; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. The Rev. Michael Payne will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, at Moser Funeral Home. Interment will be in Morrisville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Nicholas Fairfax
Former Safeway employee
Nicholas Wellington Fairfax, 80, of New Baltimore, died April 26, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton.
Mr. Fairfax was born in Fairfax County on June 23, 1917, the son of the late Nicholas P. and Hattie Ann Buckley Fairfax. He was retired from his employment with Safeway. He was a member of the New Baltimore Lions Club and had received its Humanitarian Award in 1997.
Mr. Fairfax was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Anna Fairfax.
He is survived by a stepson, William D. Thompson of Amissville; a sister, Fern M. Payne of Annandale; a grandson and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys V. Robinson and Myrtle A. Fairfax.
A funeral service took place April 29 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in Stonewall Memory Gardens.

Iva Sharp

Iva K. Sharp, 71, of Manassas, died April 23, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Sharp was born in Fauquier County on Dec. 31, 1926, the daughter of the late Herbert J. and Mafie E. Poe Heflin. She was substitute teacher for many years in the Prince William County school system.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Sharp; a daughter, Teresa L. Whitson of Manassas; a son, Tony L. Sharp of Midland; three sisters, Mary Pearson of Warrenton, Ruby Smith of Amissville, and Phyllis Farmer of Manchester, Md.; two grandchildren, and a godson.
A funeral service took place April 27 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in Amissville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mary Corbett
Former Pittsburgh resident
Mary Margaret Corbett, 92, of Marshall died April 23, 1998, at Oak Springs Comprehensive Care Center in Warrenton.
Mrs. Corbett was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 27, 1905, the daughter of the late Francis McCabe and Helen Quigley McCabe. She had lived in Pittsburgh most of her life, living in Westminster, Calif., before moving to Warrenton in 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale F. Corbett, and two daughters, Geraldine Clayborn and Sylvia Jean Harold.
She is survived by a son, Fred J. Corbett of Marshall; a sister, Jean McCabe of Pittsburgh; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
The Rev. John Riley led a funeral service April 27 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. Interment was in Leeds Cemetery in Hume.

Neal Scott
Mechanic
Neal Marshall Scott, 44, of Catlett died April 22, 1998, at Prince William Hospital.
Mr. Scott was born in Maryland on Nov. 27, 1953. He worked as a mechanic at Restless Wheels RVs in Manassas.
He is survived by his parents, Lewis Joseph Scott and Clara M. Scott of Catlett; a brother, William C. Scott of Pittsburgh, and his girlfriend, Karen L. Jones of Gainesville.
A funeral service took place April 27 at Moser Chapel. Interment was in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md.

Ruth Dunbar
Avid gardener
Ruth Cunningham Dunbar, 77, of Warrenton died April 22, 1998, at her home.
Born in Sharon, Pa., Mrs. Dunbar attended Chatham Hall School and Smith College, where she was a six-letter athlete. She was an excellent tennis player, sailor, swimmer, golfer and fly fisherwoman. She was also an avid gardener and a member of the Garden Club of Virginia, the Warrenton Garden Club and the Diggers Garden Club of Pasadena, Calif.
Mrs. Dunbar was a former member of the board of Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena and trustee of Chatham Hall. She was also a founding member of Christ Church in Warrenton.
She is survived by her husband, Henry F. Dunbar; a son, John C. Dunbar of Highland, Calif., and a daughter, Mary W. Dunbar of Haarlem, The Netherlands.
A private funeral service took place in Warrenton and interment was in the family plot in Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle, Pa.

Virginia Ross Mayhugh, 73, of Nokesville, died April 26, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton.
Mrs. Mayhugh and her late husband, Gordon F. Mayhugh Sr., were owners and operators of Mayhugh's Store in Greenwich for more than 50 years. Mrs. Mayhugh retired for health reasons and her two sons, Gordon and Larry continue the family business. She and her brother-in-law, David Mayhugh, also owned and operated three other family stores in New Baltimore, Midland and Amissville since 1958.
Mrs. Mayhugh was a volunteer with the Prince William Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Daughters of America, Manassas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Gordon F. Mayhugh Sr., a grandson, Gordon F. Mayhugh III, and a brother, F. Ivan Ross.
She is survived by two sons, Gordon F. Mayhugh Jr. and Larry R. Mayhugh, both of Greenwich; a daughter, Gayle M. Douglas of Mechanicsville; a sister, Mary Kay Fitzgerald of Haywood; three brothers, Winfield S. Ross Jr. of Nokesville, William H. Ross of Gainesville, Fla., and Forrest R. Ross of Haywood; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place April 29 at Price Funeral Home in Manassas. Interment was in Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas.

Charles Jeffries
Warrenton postmaster
Charlie Moffett Jeffries, 77, of Warrenton, died April 23, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Jeffries retired as postmaster of Warrenton, one of the last presidential appointees to that post, on May 5, 1983, after 36 years with the U.S. Postal Service.
Mr. Jeffries was a devoted member of the Warrenton Baptist Church all his life and in recent years traveled to Haiti on two occasions as part of a mission group from the church. He was an active member of the Warrenton Rotary Club and served as president from 1974-75. He was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1997.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Pearl Rankin Jeffries.
He is survived by two daughters, Pat Motley and Terre Sadler, both of Richmond; a brother, Weber Jeffries of Winchester; a sister, Mrs. Winifred Kelchner of Chambersburg, Pa.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place April 28 at Warrenton Baptist Church. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.
