Billy Retzlaff III
Culpeper student

Billy Glenn Retzlaff III, 18, of Culpeper died April 18, 1998, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

He was born Oct. 18, 1979, at Fort Belvoir. He was a senior at Culpeper County High School and active in the Junior R.O.T.C.

He is survived by his mother, Carole Yvonne Retzlaff of Culpeper; his father, Billy Glenn Retzlaff Jr. of The Plains; his grandparents, Billy G. Sr. and Carole J. Retzlaff of Morrisville, and his maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Blanche Robelot of Goldvein.

The Rev. Robert N. Clark will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Jeffersonton, with an honor guard and pallbearers from the Junior R.O.T.C program.

Eva Erickson
Auditor

Eva E. Erickson, 87, of Midland, died April 10, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Ms. Erickson was born in Washington, D.C., on April 12, 1910, the daughter of the late John I. and Bertha Victoria Erickson. She was a former long-time resident of Kensington, Md. She had been an auditor for the U.S. Postal Service and at her retirement worked for the Agency for International Development with the Department of State.

She was a former member of the Brightwood Park Methodist-Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. She later joined St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington, Md., and was a member for more than 30 years. She served as a member of the church administrative board and was a former president of the Women's Society of Christian Service.

She is survived by two sisters, Harriet Erickson of Midland, and Lillian Upchurch of Smyrna, Ga.; and a brother, John A. Erickson of Midland.

The Rev. Patricia Olson led a funeral service April 12 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A graveside service took place April 13 at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Thomas Drake
Army veteran

Thomas Drake, 80, of Bealeton, died April 20, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 20, 1917, in North Carolina, he was a son of the late Samuel David Drake and Elizabeth Bell Drake.

A veteran of the Merchant Marines and U.S. Army, Mr. Drake worked as a refrigerator mechanic and retired from the Naval Gun Factory. He also enjoyed quarter horses.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Hardy of Haymarket, Janice Breeden of Melbourne, Fla., and Hope Quasebarth of Gainesville; a son, David L. Drake of Bealeton; a brother, William Drake of Nashville, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Bell Dulin of Fredericksburg; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kate C. Drake, and a son, Bill Drake.

The funeral will take place at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment will be at Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria.

Roy L. Hatcher
World War II veteran

Roy L. Hatcher, 83, of Warrenton, died April 21, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Born Feb. 8, 1915, in Pipestem, W.Va., he as a son of Joseph and Mary Hatcher.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hatcher retired after 22 years as a coal mine worker. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Grace B. Hatcher of Warrenton; three daughters, JoAnne Bare of Beckley, W.Va., Betty Humphrey of Cool Ridge, W.Va., and Norma Abbott of Vienna; two sons, Robert C. Meador of Laurel, Md., and Arnold Hatcher of Seabrook, Md.; a brother, Lonnie Hatcher of Hinton, W.Va.; a sister, Dorothy Clemns of Massillon, Ohio; nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. The funeral will take place at Meadows Funeral Home in Hinton, W.Va.

Floyd Furr
State employee

Floyd Astor Furr, 83, of Delaplane died April 16, 1999, at Warrenton Overlook Care Center.

Mr. Furr was born in Marshall on Jan. 12, 1916, son of the late Robert and Minnie Scott Furr. He was employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation for 31 years. His wife Carrie L. Furr preceded him in death in 1994.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Hurd of Odenton, Md., and Ann Carter of Warrenton; three sons: Floyd W. Furr of Lovettsville, George R. Furr and Carroll A. Furr both of Front Royal; three foster children: David Albert of Delaplane, Susan Woodby of St. Charles, Mo., and Laura Smith of Manassas; 18 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Marc Roberson led a funeral service April 19 at Cool Spring United Methodist Church. Interment was in Leeds Cemetery in Markham.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall Rescue Squad or the Cool Spring United Methodist Church.

Virginia Riley
Church member

Virginia Mildred Riley, 91, of Warrenton, died April 16, 1999, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. Riley was born in Fauquier County on Feb. 12, 1908, the daughter of the late Mason Eldrige McClanahan and Nettie Roselle McClanahan. She was a member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. Riley.

She is survived by her son, Donald Riley of Amissville; a daughter, Patricia Westerhoff of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, Walter McClanahan of Richmond; three sisters: Elinor Curtis of Warrenton, Ruth Gerson of Suitland, Md., and Thelma Nutter of Baltimore, Md.; and two granddaughters.

The Rev. John Chadsey led a funeral service April 19 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Warrenton Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 3370, Warrenton, Va. 20188.

Sylvia O'Bannion
Minister

Sylvia Jean Lambert O'Bannion, 53, of Winchester died April 18, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. O'Bannion was born July 26, 1945. She the pastor of Land of God's Delight Church in Linden.

She is survived by her husband, Morris O'Bannion of Winchester; a daughter, Mattie "Tweety" O'Bannion of Winchester; two sons, Roy Lambert and Maurice O'Bannion, both of Marshall; two sisters, Christine Thompson of Warrenton and Emma Williams of Hume; two brothers, Richard Lambert of Broad Run and Albert Lambert of Jeffersonton, and one grandchild.

Bishop Thelma Mitchell will lead a funeral service at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Faith Christian Church in Warrenton. Interment will be in Mount Morris Community Cemetery in Hume.

Chancellor Shumate
Orange County resident

Chancellor Shumate, 70, of Orange, died April 19, 1999, at Orange County Nursing Home where he had been a resident for many years.

Mr. Shumate was born in Warrenton on July 10, 1928, the son of Chancellor Shumate and Rachel Marie Moreland.

He is survived by a sister, Jane M. Proctor of Annapolis, Md.

The Rev. J. Richard Winter will lead a graveside service at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Warrenton Cemetery.

Raymond Wright
Middleburg farmer

Raymond Lightner Wright, 71, of Middleburg died April 19, 1999.

Mr. Wright was the son of the late Joseph Milton and Zula Lee Wright. He had been a farmer most of his life.

He is survived by three sisters: Elise Cooper and Julia Waddell of Middleburg and Mary Rhoton of Stephens City.

A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Upperville.

Joann May
Church member

Joann Myers May, 69, of Remington died April 19, 1999, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mrs. May was born in Merriam, Kan., on Aug. 24, 1929, a daughter of the late Fred Milton and Thelma Justice May. She married John G. May in July of 1947. He preceded her in death in December of 1994. She was a longtime member of the Catlett Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Lemon of Remington; three sons: John F. May and Mitchell May both of Bealeton, and Mark May of Culpeper; a sister, Judy White of Orange; two brothers: Don Myers of Culpeper and Clarence Myers of Rock Hill, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.

The family will received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A funeral service will take place at noon Friday, April 23, at Catlett Assembly of God. Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catlett Assembly of God Missionary, 9250 Prospect Ave., Catlett, Va. 20119.
