James White

James Francis White, 90, of Warrenton, died June 27, 1998, in Warrenton Overlook Care Center.
Mr. White was born in New Windsor, N.Y., on July 29, 1907, the son of the late Felix Leonard White and Margaret Ryan White. He was a graduate of Newburgh Academy and National Printing Institute. He worked in New York City for the Kelly Printing Corp. for many years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Florence Marie Johnson.
He is survived by two daughters, Joan W. Goodenough and Jennifer W. Benfer, both of Warrenton; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Father Michael Bazan will lead a memorial Mass at noon, Thursday, July 2, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. Interment will be in Bright View Cemetery.
Katheryn Bell
Former teacher
Katheryn "Kitty" DeHart Bell, 69, of Warrenton, died June 28, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Bell was born in Amherst on Aug. 27, 1928, the daughter of the late Harvey O. DeHart and Mary Elizabeth DeHart. She graduated from Madison College in Harrisonburg and worked for Hutton and Payne for many years after coming to Warrenton. She taught sixth-grade math at Central and C.M. Bradley Elementary schools for 22 years before retiring in 1989.
She is survived by her husband, Hayden Bell of Warrenton, and a brother, Joe DeHart of Chatham.
The Rev. J. Richard Winter led a graveside service July 1 at Warrenton Cemetery.

Edward Johnson
Retired businessman
Edward James Johnson, 80, of Warrenton, died June 28, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital.
Mr. Johnson was born on Dec. 25, 1917, in Long Island, N.Y., the son of Walter Howard and Elizabeth Leahy Johnson. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Mr. Johnson was a group flight leader and group commander as a Marauder pilot. He flew 75 combat missions in the Sicilian, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Naples-Foggia and European air offensive campaigns. He was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross for heroic achievement. The government of France also awarded him with the Croix de Guerre for his outstanding support of the French army in Italy. He joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In 1952 he moved to Delaplane, where he owned and operated a horse and cattle farm. An avid horseman, Mr. Johnson played polo and fox hunted. He served as honorary whip, honorary secretary and as a longtime member of the board of trustees of the Old Dominion Hounds.
Mr. Johnson was a founding partner of Oak Springs Nursing Home. He owned and operated Johnson Realty of Virginia, and was a past president of the Fauquier Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
He is survived by his wife, Annette Johnson of Delaplane; a son, Gerald Johnson of Richmond; three daughters, Christine Gray of Stahlstown, Pa., Kathryn Baldwin of Delaplane, and Lisa Vaughn of Richmond; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Harold E. Nicholson led a graveside service July 1 at Leeds Cemetery in Hume.

Mary Kocsis

Mary T. Kocsis, 80, of Marshall, died June 28, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Kocsis was born in Atlanta on Jan. 3, 1918, the daughter of the late Lawrence Tucker and Julia Pendleton Tucker. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Frank C. Kocsis.
She is survived by a daughter, Dina K. Callow of Marshall; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas.

Brooke Umbel
Marshall student
Brooke Tennyson Umbel, 17, of Marshall, died July 3, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital.
Brooke was an honor student at Highland School in Warrenton. She was captain of the varsity volleyball team and co-captain of the varsity soccer team. She was a member of the Northern Virginia Women's Junior Olympic Volleyball League.
Her awards include Female Best Athlete at Highland School, excellence awards in math and science, Most Valuable Player in volleyball, and the Coach's Award in soccer. She also was a senior member of the BOSS swim team. She received the Cum Laude Award for the National Latin Exam.
She is survived by her parents, Barbara Habedank and Richard P. Umbel Jr., and two sisters, Montana Christine and Dakota Danielle Umbel; her maternal grandparents, Otto and Arleen Habedank, and paternal grandparents Richard and Betty Umbel.
A funeral took place July 7 at Grace Episcopal Church in The Plains. Interment was in Bright View Cemetery in Warrenton.

Bertha Cropp

Bertha Florence Cropp, 86, of Midland died July 4, 1998, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Cropp was born in Fauquier County on Oct. 12, 1911, the daughter of the late Walter B. Brown and Virginia A. Brown. She was the Mount Carmel community columnist for The Fauquier Times-Democrat for more than 38 years.
A lifelong member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Mrs. Cropp was Sunday School secretary for 25 years, a member of the Aid Society, Baptist Young People's Union, and a member and secretary of the Women's Missionary Society. She served as church historian and was active in many other areas of the church.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond H. Brown.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Linwood A. Cropp.
Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, and at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where the Rev. Peyton Embrey will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the church cemetery. A luncheon in Mrs. Cropp's honor will take place in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Minnie James

Minnie Virginia James, 97, of Remington, died June 30, 1998, at Warrenton Overlook Care Center.
Mrs. James was born in Virginia on March 22, 1901, the daughter of the late Landon Jackson Cockrill and Mary Virginia Cockrill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Fleming James and a son, Edward D. Lee.
She is survived by a son, Harry L. Lee of Brandywine, Md.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
The Rev. J. Richard Winter led a funeral service July 3 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.
Margaret Gilbert

Margaret Elizabeth "Libby" Gilbert, 39, of Midland died July 5, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Gilbert was born in Jenkins, Ky., on Sept. 14, 1958. She was a member of the Community Christian Church in Morrisville.
She is survived by her father, Fred West of Appomattox; her mother, Phyllis Robbins of Midland; a son, Phillip B. Gilbert of Midland; a daughter, Robyn West of Midland; a brother, Kenneth West of Palmyra; a sister, Shanan Langdale of Ringold, Ga., and a maternal grandfather, Thurston Robbins of Jenkins, Ky.
Pastor Larry Kennedy led a funeral service July 8 at Moser Chapel in Warrenton. Interment was in Midland Cemetery.

Randy Warren Shorts, 43, of Marshall, died July 3, 1998, at National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Md.
Mr. Shorts was born on Dec. 17, 1954. He was a carpenter.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Shorts of Marshall; a brother, Stephen Shorts of Marshall, and two sisters, Karen Shorts of Marshall and Geraldine Stevenson of Washington, D.C.
The Rev. William Swann will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, at First Ashville Baptist Church in Marshall. Visitation will take place at the church one hour before the service. Interment will be in the Mount Morris Community Cemetery in Hume.
