Ethel Porter

Ethel Mae Porter, 59, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Warrenton, died May 27, 1998, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.
Mrs. Porter was born May 12, 1939.
She is survived by her husband, John Porter of Silver Spring, Md.; a son, Perry Scott Ferguson of Warrenton; three sisters: Jessie Colclough of Washington, D.C., Katherine Washington of North Carolina, and Carrie Marshall of Warrenton; five brothers: Isaac Ferguson Jr., Edward Ferguson, Willie Ferguson, and Vance Ferguson, all of Warrenton, and Terry Ferguson of Silver Spring, Md.; her father, Isaac Ferguson Sr. of Warrenton; and two grandchildren.
The Rev. Dennio McNeil led a funeral service June 1 at Little Zion Baptist Church in Warrenton. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.
Earl Groves
Safeway manager
Earl A. Groves, 78, of Axton, died May 26, 1998, in Martinsville.
Mr. Groves was born in Remington on June 12, 1919, the son of the late Joseph R. Groves and Elizabeth O. Willingham Groves. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in Burma and China. He worked as a manager for Safeway Stores for more than 25 years. He was a member of Remington United Methodist Church and attended Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church in Axton.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia L. Groves of Axton; a stepdaughter, Judy B. Corcoran of Martinsville; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise G. Embrey and Lillian G. Smith.
The Rev. Jeffrey L. Cannon led a graveside service May 27 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va.

James Melvin
Drywall contractor
James Willard Melvin, 48, of Marshall died May 23, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Melvin was born in Marshall on May 15, 1950, son of Preston C. and Mary A. Brown Melvin of Marshall. He was a drywall contractor for 30 years.
He is survived by his parents; two sons, James W. Melvin Jr. and John L. Melvin, both of Front Royal; five sisters: Mary A. Henry of Culpeper, Margaret V. Thomas of Marshall, Linda L. Melvin of Broad Run, Helen M. Sowers and Sylvia J. Melvin, both of Manassas; two brothers, John T. Melvin of The Plains and Martin L. Melvin of Stafford; and his fiancee, Betty Carter.
Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Royston Funeral Home in Marshall, where the Rev. Herbert Leach will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29. Interment will be in Orlean Cemetery.
Ellen Jennings

Ellen May Jennings, 38, of Front Royal died May 24, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Jennings was born in Front Royal on May 7, 1960, a daughter of the late Henry H. and Ellen V. Atkins Sr.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald D. Jennings; three sons: Ronald D. Jennings Jr. of White Post, Michael P. Jennings and Andrew A. Jennings, both of Front Royal; a sister, Geraldine A. Jennings of Ranson, W.Va.; three brothers, Larry W. Atkins of Bealeton, Ray A. Atkins Sr. of Marshall and Robert A. Atkins of Rectortown, and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry H. Atkins Jr. in 1988.
The Rev. Roger W. Powers will lead a funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Royston Funeral Home in Marshall. Interment will be in Marshall Cemetery.
James Shellington
Catlett resident
James Eugene Shellington, 54, of Catlett died May 22, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Shellington was born in Virginia on Jan. 2, 1944. He worked as a laborer.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Shellington of Catlett; two daughters, Lisa Ferris and Stacy Vanessa, both of Culpeper; six brothers, Chauncey and Bruce Shellington, both of Warrenton, Walter and Melvin Shellington, both of Calverton, Cecil Shellington of Manassas and Kenneth Shellington of Bealeton; two sisters, Christine Webster of Catlett and Shirley Shellington of Calverton, and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 10 and 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, at Oak Shade Baptist Church in Catlett. The Rev. Jesse Jones Jr. will lead a funeral service at the church at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Kenneth Clater

Kenneth Durham Clater, 58, of Amissville died May 26, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Clater was born in Sperryville on Oct. 23, 1939, a son of the late Jesse Clark Clater and Mary Lucy Clater. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves until his graduation from Rappahannock County High School. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served more than five years until he received a medical discharge. He was retired from Rental Uniform Services Co. after 28 years as a service representative.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta D. "Red" Clater of Amissville; two daughters, Melissa A. Clater of Amissville and Mary Clater Catts of Rixeyville; a brother, Daniel C. Clater of Front Royal, and one grandson.
Elder David A. Roberts will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Jeffersonton.

Evelyn Cameron

Evelyn Taylor Cameron, 76, of Naples, Fla., died May 13, 1998.
Mrs. Cameron was born in Tappahannock, a daughter of the late William T. and Eleanor R. Wines. She moved to Naples in 1990. Before then she had lived in Warrenton and Manassas.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde Cameron, and daughter Barbara Franklin, both of Naples; a sister, Grace Jeffries of Warrenton; a brother, James Wines of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Green Funeral Home in Herndon.

William Avery Jr.

William Eugene Avery Jr., 57, of Springfield died May 21, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Avery is survived by his wife, Laurel Avery of Springfield; a daughter, Felecia Avery Davis of Manassas; two step-children, Tanya Galemore Tully of Springfield and Sgt. Chris Galemore of Fort Campbell, Ky.; his mother, Lois Hurlbut Denslow of Sapphire, N.C.; three sisters, Caryl Avery and Susan Avery Wolf, both of Sapphire, N.C., and Wilma Avery Hoovler of The Plains, and four step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Beahm's Chapel Cemetery in Luray. A memorial service will be held during the annual Avery reunion in July in Sapphire, N.C.
Jean Petty
Warrenton resident
Jean Galbraith Petty, 88, of Warrenton, died May 24, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Petty was born in New York on April 9, 1910, the daughter of the late George Thomas Galbraith and Jean Galbraith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Klopfenstein.
She is survived by four sons: William G. Petty of Waphaoneta, Ohio, James G. Petty of Raleigh, N.C., George G. Petty of Florence, Ala., and Thomas G. Petty of Richmond; two daughters, Martha Petty Holloran and Christina E. Petty, both of Warrenton; 19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place May 27 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.

Sally Blankenship
Former Evington resident
Sally Lynch Mason Blankenship, 85, died May 22, 1998, at Sunrise Retirement Home in Warrenton.
Mrs. Blankenship was born in Campbell County on April 4, 1913, a daughter of the late William M. Mason and Sally Lynch Mason. She was a direct descendent of John Lynch, the founder of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Vernon I. Blankenship of Evington. She was a member of Evington United Methodist Church, the Ruritan Club and a past member of Ivanhoe and Briarwood Garden Clubs.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. R. Martin Kremer of Warrenton; two sisters, Nan M. Tucker and Mandy Harding, both of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service took place May 25 at Evington United Methodist Church Cemetery.
