Reid Biedler

Restaurant owner

Reid Jeffries Biedler, 84, of Catlett, died May 20, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Biedler was born in Winston on June 16, 1913, the son of the late John Kite Biedler and Anna May Biedler. He was a Navy veteran and the former owner of Biedler's Park 'n' Eat in Opal. He was a member of the Morrisville VFW and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Catlett.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte May Biedler of Catlett; two sons, Charles Jeffries Biedler of Little River, S.C., and James K. Biedler of Reston, and three sisters: Mae Anderson and Marguerite Long, both of Warrenton, and Mary Simms of Fairfax.

The Rev. Patricia Olson led a graveside service May 23 at Catlett Cemetery.

Gordon Jennings

Engineer

Gordon Charnock Jennings, 60, of Midland, died May 23, 1998, at INOVA-Fairfax Hospital.

Mr. Jennings was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on April 8, 1938. He was a retired aerospace engineer for Lockheed Missiles. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Bradshaw Jennings.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen W. Jennings of Midland; his mother, Evis Jennings of Wilmington, Del.; a stepson, Andrew A. Greene of Philadelphia; two stepdaughters, Laurie G. Wolinski of Middletown, Del., and Allyson G. Harrison of Smyrna, Del.; two brothers, Peter Jennings of Wilmington, Del., and Gregory Jennings of Elgin, Ill., and 12 grandchildren.

Lena Simpson

Bealeton resident

Lena Gray Simpson, 76, of Bealeton died May 22, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Simpson was born in Basin, W.Va., on April 17, 1922, daughter of the late Gilbert Shrewsbury and Maude Mann Shrewsbury. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Simpson, a daughter, Barbara A. Simpson, and a brother, Glen Shrewsbury.

She is survived by three daughters: Patricia Benedict of Manassas, Brenda Price of Richmond, and Tammy Richards of Bealeton; six sons, Ronnie Simpson of Richmond, Larry Simpson of Culpeper, Benny Simpson of Bealeton, Eddie Simpson of Chantilly, Gary T. Simpson of Reston, and Barry Simpson of Stafford; four sisters, Lillian Henry, Virginia Phillips and Phyllis Shrewsbury, all of Princeton, W.Va., and Doris Platt of Kansas City, Mo.; 25 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Eddie Simpson led a funeral service May 26 at Moser Chapel in Warrenton. Interment was in Remington Cemetery.

Nellie Dowalo

Coordinator

Nellie Boyce Dowalo, 82, of Warrenton died May 21, 1998, at Culpeper Health Care Center.

Mrs. Dowalo was born in George, N.C., on Nov. 18, 1915, the daughter of the late Jesse W. and Nancy Sawyer Boyce. She graduated from Woodland High School, Woodland, N.C., in 1932, and married Andrew Dowalo at Fort Monroe in 1937. They spent most of their married life in the Tidewater area of Virginia, with tours of duty in Bermuda, Limestone, Maine, and Portsmouth, N.H.

After her husband died in 1969, Mrs. Dowalo worked as a coordinator for the Peninsula Agency on Aging and for Meals on Wheels. When her health failed, she resided with her daughter June Schiermeyer in Warrenton.

Survivors include two daughters, June A. Schiermeyer of Warrenton and Deborah Roycroft of Fredericksburg; three sons: Frederick Dowalo of Ipswich, Mass., James Dowalo of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Stephen Dowalo of Hampton; 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Dowalo was preceded in death by four brothers, Elwood Boyce, William Boyce, Charles Melson and Mark Melson, and a sister, Aletheia Boyce.

A funeral service took place May 24 at Moser Chapel in Warrenton. Interment was in Hampton Memorial Gardens.

John Chilton
Former mayor

John B. Chilton, 93, of Remington died May 15, 1998, at Blue Ridge Christian Home in Bealeton.

Born and raised at "Hereford," near Lakota in Culpeper County, Mr. Chilton was the son of the late Charles Blackwell and Harriet Hamilton Chilton. He graduated from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg and attended Virginia Tech.

Mr. Chilton moved to Remington from Fauquier Springs in 1936, and was assistant cashier at the State Bank of Remington. Later he was an International Harvester farm equipment salesman with Gill Implement Co. in Warrenton. He retired as manager of the Northern Virginia Farm Center in Rectortown in 1970.

Active in civic affairs, Mr. Chilton served five terms as mayor of Remington between 1942 to 1972, and served on the Remington Town Council when he wasn't mayor. He was appointed to the Fauquier Electoral Board in 1967 and was a member of the Warrenton-Fauquier Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter and long-time member of the Remington Volunteer Fire Department and Remington Rescue Squad. He was a long-time director of the State Bank of Remington, and served many years on the vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Remington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hill Chilton. He is survived by their children: John F. Chilton of Fairfax, Mary C. Newell of Mathews, and C. Benjamin Chilton of Baltimore; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Remington.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or to the Remington Volunteer Fire Department or Rescue Squad.

Bernice Payne
Teacher

Bernice "B." Rector Payne, 69, of Warrenton died May 14, 1998, at the home of her son, Richard Carroll Payne, in Warrenton.

Mrs. Payne was born in Warrenton on June 2, 1928, the only child of Daniel G. and Bernice P. Rector. A lifelong resident of Warrenton, she received her primary and secondary education in public schools, graduating from Warrenton High School in 1945. She then began studies at Mary Washington College, but quit after two years to save for her pending marriage to the late Carroll Lee Payne, which took place in 1949.

While raising her five children, Mrs. Payne became one of the first teachers at Hope School. She later began helping as a teacher's aide in the reading lab at Fauquier High School. After her three oldest children earned university degrees, Mrs. Payne returned to Mary Washington College, where she finished her English studies, graduating in 1982. She became a certified teacher and taught English at Fauquier High School until her retirement four years ago.

In retirement, Mrs. Payne tutored foreign students at the Fauquier County Adult Education Center until she could no longer get out because of her fight against cancer.

Mrs. Payne is survived by her children: B. Carolyn Payne de Ortega of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Nancy K. Tabb of Kearneysville, W.Va., Daniel T. Payne of Gordonsville, Richard C. Payne of Warrenton, and Ann Stuart Meyer of Flint Hill, and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service took place May 17 at Grace Episcopal Church in Casanova. Interment followed at the grave site of her husband and parents.

Anna Cubbage
Hospital employee

Anna M. Cubbage, 91, of Warrenton died May 15, 1998, at Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community in Culpeper.

Ms. Cubbage was born Dec. 7, 1906, in Vienna, the daughter of the late William S. and Izella Cubbage. She worked at Fauquier Hospital for 18 years. She was a member of Midland Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Earl Cubbage, Saylor Cubbage, Paul Cubbage and William S. Cubbage Jr.

A funeral service took place May 18 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in Midland Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Midland.

Francis Settle
Feed supply employee

Francis "Jerry" Gerald Settle, 66, of Boston, Va., died May 14, 1998, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Settle was born in Rawlings on April 14, 1932, son of the late Walker Benjamin Settle and Frances Mason Flinn Settle. He graduated from Virginia Tech and was employed at Fauquier Feed Supply for 16 years. He was a Mason and a former Lions Club member. He was a member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Janice Delbridge Settle; two daughters, Susan S. Link of Abingdon, and Ellen P. Beck of Fredericksburg; two brothers, W. Flinn Settle of Edgewater, Md., and Charles B. Settle of Capron; and three grandchildren.

The Rev. Rick Ritchie led a funeral service May 17 at Found and Sons Funeral Home in Culpeper. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.

Calvin Glascock
Painter

Calvin Keith Glascock, 72, of The Plains died May 17, 1998, at Warrenton Overlook Care Center.

Mr. Glascock was born in Marshall on Sept. 15, 1925, the son of the late William H. and Rita Fewell Glascock. He was a painter with L.W. Carter and Son for 28 years.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Glascock; a daughter, Brenda G. Presgraves of The Plains; two sons, Calvin K. Glascock Jr. of Marshall, and Mark A. Glascock of The Plains; a sister, Margaret Turner of Marshall; five brothers: Carl H. Glascock of Arlington, Henderson W. Glascock of Marshall, Page C. Glascock and Reginald P. Glascock, both of Marshall, and Warren F. Glascock of Winchester; and six grandchildren.

The Rev. Randy Daniels led a memorial service May 20 at Marshall Cemetery.

Herman Carter
Truck driver

Herman James Carter, 56, of The Plains died May 15, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.

Mr. Carter was born Feb. 16, 1942. He worked as a truck driver and was a trustee at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Marshall.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Carter of The Plains; a son, Herman J. Carter Jr. of The Plains; three daughters: Louise C. Trammell of Manassas, Sherry M. Harris of Baileys Crossroads, and Peggy A. Ford of Falls Church; his mother, Eleanora L. Carter of Sterling; his stepfather, Clarence Holland of Sterling; a sister, Eva Mae Terry of Herndon; and 15 grandchildren.

The Rev. Francis Belle led a funeral service May 19 at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Marshall. Interment was in Solon Cemetery in Middleburg.
