Gladys Kannard

Gladys Mae Kannard, 71, of The Plains, died Aug. 30, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Kannard was born in Fauquier County on Aug. 21, 1927, the daughter of the late John and Hester Pearson. She was retired from administration work with AT&T. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She is survived by her husband, Sam F. Kannard of The Plains; a son, Frank Kannard of Orlando, Fla., and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leo F. Pearson, and a sister, Frances Lackey.
The Rev. Randy Daniels led a funeral service Sept. 2 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment was in Little Georgetown Cemetery.

Charles McElhanon

Charles D. "Mac" McElhanon, 76, of Warrenton died Aug. 25, 1998, at Malcom Grow Hospital, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
"Mr. Mac," as he was known to his friends, was born April 22, 1922, in Okalona, Ark. He attended the University of California and was a graduate of the Senior Executive Institute in Charlottesville.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1940 and advanced to first sergeant in 1942, at that time the youngest first sergeant in Army history. He was commissioned in 1942 and assigned to numerous places including India, Guam and Japan. He served 24 years in the Logistics Division of the Pentagon's Air Staff.
Col. McElhanon was awarded the Bronze Star, the Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, American Defense Service medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He retired from active duty in 1965.
He returned to the Air Force in 1967 in a civilian capacity in the Maintenance Engineering and later Logistics Plans and Programs Division. He became a member of the Senior Executive Service in 1985. He received seven Outstanding Performance Awards, four Sustained Superior Performance Awards and the Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
He also was nominated for the Thomas P. Garrity Memorial Award for Logistics Management. When he retired from civilian service in 1987, he was recognized by a "Salute to a Great American" entered in the Congressional Record of May 27, 1987, for the U.S. House of Representatives for his years of devoted service to his country.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Isabelle McElhanon, and his son, Warren McElhanon, killed in action in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife Joyce McElhanon of Warrenton; three daughters: K. Kay Sussman of Fairfax, Debbie McElhanon Jeunette of Boyce and Shelley McElhanon of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Jeremiah Crowley of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Sarah Carolyn Caver of Arkdelphia, Ark., and Mary Jo Ryan of Lexington Park, Md.; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A funeral service will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Memorial Chapel, Fort Myer, Arlington. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

William Mickley

Col. William Bowen Mickley, 84, of Warrenton, died Aug. 23, 1998, at his home.
Col. Mickley was a career Air Force officer and a farmer. He was born in Washington, D.C., on March 5, 1914, the son of the late Milton Leroy Mickley and Ella Bowen Mickley of Remington. He grew up in the Charlotte, N.C., area and graduated from Davidson College in 1936. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the army ROTC. He was commissioned as an officer in the Army upon graduation and was integrated into the Air Force during World War II.
During his military career, Col. Mickley served tours of duty in England, Germany, the Philippines, Taiwan, the Pentagon, Alabama, Rhode Island and South Carolina. Upon retirement in 1968, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.
Col. Mickley retired to the Warrenton area where he became a trust officer at Peoples National Bank and a farmer. He served on the board of the Sulfur Springs Investment Corp. at Fauquier Springs Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Bayne Easton Mickley of Warrenton; three children: William Bowen Mickley Jr. of Warrenton, Manoa Mickley Daniel of Atlanta and Gail Mickley Murthy of Fort Worth, Texas, and six grandchildren, the oldest a lieutenant in the Air Force.
A graveside funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Remington Cemetery.

Gertie Ball Jennings, of Marshall, died Aug. 18, 1998, in the Shawnee Springs Nursing Home in Winchester.
Mrs. Jennings was born in The Plains, the daughter of the late John W. and Della Rector Ball. She was a member of The Plains Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Pauline Broadfoot of Alexandria.
The Rev. Jack Rudy led a graveside service Aug. 21 at Marshall Cemetery.
Walter Robinson Sr.

Walter Milton Robinson Sr., 66, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Markham, died Aug. 16, 1998, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.
Mr. Robinson was born March 9, 1932. He was a retired carpenter.
He is survived by three sons: Walter Robinson Jr. of Linden, Larry Robinson of Winchester and Robert Robinson of Stafford; a daughter, Shirley Robinson Lowe of Oakton; two brothers, Wayne Robinson of The Plains and Charles Robinson of Daily City, Calif.; four sisters: Alease Robinson of Washington, D.C., Frances Corum of Marshall, Blanche Haley of Markham and Nancy Smith of Silver Spring, Md.; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
The Rev. Lorenzo Hill led a graveside service Aug. 22 at Mount Morris Community Cemetery in Hume.
Irvin Stewart

Irvin B. Stewart, 63, of Manassas, died Aug. 20, 1998, at Washington Hospital Center.
Mr. Stewart was born July 10, 1935. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired Metrobus driver in Washington, D.C.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma J. Stewart of Manassas; three daughters: Latisha Stewart, Ashley Baltimore and Nicole Baltimore, all of Manassas; a brother, Gibson Stewart of Alexandria; two sisters, Ethel Harris of Wilksboro, N.C., and Barbara Gaskins of Manassas.
The Rev. Norman Smith and the Rev. Frederick Ray led a funeral service Aug. 26 at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Rectortown. Interment was in the Stewart Family Cemetery in Rectortown.
Carroll Pendleton

Carroll W. Pendleton, 85, of Marshall, died Aug. 23, 1998, at Warrenton Overlook Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Pendleton was born July 13, 1913.
He is survived by three daughters: Pearl Brown of Catlett, Alice Bland of The Plains and Charlotte Pendleton of Fort Washington, Md.; a son, Carroll Pendleton of Manassas; a sister, Alice Pendleton of Charlestown, W.Va.; a brother, John Pendleton of Washington, D.C.; 17 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Douglas Gore will lead a funeral service at noon Thursday, Aug. 27, at Beulah Baptist Church in Markham. Interment will be in the Mount Morris Community Cemetery in Hume.
Ola McConchie

Ola Jones McConchie, 95, of Bealeton, died Aug. 23, 1998, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. McConchie was born Aug. 7, 1903, in Fauquier County, a daughter of the late Samuel Howard Jones and Mary Jane Kane Jones. She was a member of the Litchfield Presbyterian Church near Botha. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. McConchie.
The Rev. J. Richard Winter led a funeral service Aug. 26 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bealeton.

Susann Moffett

Susann Robinson Moffett, 93, of Warrenton, died Aug. 25, 1998, at Lucy Corr Nursing Home in Chesterfield.
Mrs. Moffett was retired from C&P Telephone Co., where she was a switchboard operator and later a supervisor between 1924 and 1960. She was a life member of The Telephone Pioneers.
She was the widow of Hugh R. Moffett Jr. She was a member of the Warrenton Baptist Church, active in the Sunday school and Friendly Friday Folk.
She is survived by her son, Spencer L. Moffett of Chester.
The Rev. Sam P. Jones will lead a graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Warrenton Cemetery.
