Nola Turner
Teacher
Nola Rogers Turner, 85, of Front Royal died Sept. 15, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Turner was born in Oxford, N.C., on July 28, 1913, a daughter of the late Walter and Nellie Gordon Clayton. She was a graduate of North Carolina Women's College in Greensboro, N.C. She taught in the Warren County Public School System for 30 years at the A.S. Rhodes School. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Turner, Jr.
She is survived by a son, Richard C. Turner III of Goochland County, two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The Rev. Debbie Rutter led a funeral service Sept. 18 at Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal. Interment was in Marshall Cemetery.
Edwin Blanks
Retired barber
Edwin Jackson "Eddie" Blanks, 92, of Culpeper died Sept. 16, 1998, at Culpeper Health Care Center.
Mr. Blanks was born in Halifax County on Sept. 16, 1906, the son of the late Joseph Cephas Blanks and Grover Cleveland Ragsdale Blanks. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II, and received an honorable discharge with the rank of Seaman First Class.
He was a barber all his life, working in his early years in Warrenton, and since the late 1940s in Culpeper. He owned and operated his barber shop for many years on Main Street in Culpeper until his retirement in 1990.
Mr. Blanks was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church where he sang with the choir for many years. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 330 in Culpeper.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Noland Blanks; three daughters: Martha Ellen Blanks of Culpeper, Phyllis Blanks Tomlin of Lynchburg, and Eunice Blanks Forlines of Forest; 12 grandchildren and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Dr. Ted Fuson and the Rev. Ronald Tomlin led a funeral service Sept. 19 at Culpeper Baptist Church. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper. American Legion Post 330 conducted military honors at the cemetery.

Otis Beach
Maintenance worker
Otis Edward "Ed" Beach, 58, of Catlett, died Sept. 22, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Beach was born in Fauquier County on Jan. 18, 1940, a son of the late Otis Wilson Beach and Berthina Beach. He was retired from Prince William County where he worked with the Department of Grounds and Maintenance. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Louise Beach, and a brother, Stewart Beach.
He is survived by two daughters, Lorrie Stidham of Catlett and Brenda L. Beach of Bealeton; two brothers, Charlie Beach of Manassas and Randolph Beach of Catlett; a sister, Tina Lenox of Fredericksburg, and four grandchildren.
The Rev. Warren Copeland led a funeral service Sept. 26 at Jehoash Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Midland Cemetery.

Lee Dawson
Electrical engineer
Lee James Dawson, 74, of Warrenton, died Sept. 22, 1998, at Prince William Hospital.
Mr. Dawson was born in Seattle on March 5, 1924, the son of the late Levi Jacob Dawson and Hattie Dawson. He was an electrical engineer. He was an Air Force veteran and a charter member of the Andrews Air Force Base Officer's Club. He also was a member of the American Radio Relay League.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Claire Dawson.
He is survived by three daughters: Layne Marie Chaffin of Greensboro, N.C., Mary Gene Fens of Richmond and Therese Ann Kanbach of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two sons, Thomas Lee Dawson of Round Hill and William Joseph Dawson of Austin, Texas; 18 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Deacon Bernard Ragan led a funeral service Sept. 26 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was private.

Jan LaFontaine
Hospital volunteer
Jan T. LaFontaine, of Warrenton died Sept. 23, 1998, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Mrs. LaFontaine was born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. She graduated from the Convent des Ursulines in Trois Rivieres. As a student she participated in softball, basketball, curling, ice skating and tennis. She worked as a secretary. She became a service wife after her marriage to Gil LaFontaine, and traveled around the U.S. and Canada including a year at the U.S. Army School of Finance in Indianapolis and four years at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Following retirement, the LaFontaines moved to Warrenton, where Mrs. LaFontaine volunteered as a Pink Lady at Fauquier Hospital. They later moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. where she volunteered at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Gil LaFontaine; a brother, Jean, and a sister, Denise.
A mass took place Sept. 26 at St. Michael's Church in Garden City, S.C.

Margaret Carter

Margaret Elizabeth Van Horn Carter, 74, of Warrenton, died Sept. 23, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mrs. Carter was born in The Plains on Feb. 27, 1924, the daughter of the late William Thomas Van Horn and Sarah Elizabeth Ball Van Horn. She was a retired federal government employee with the N.S.A. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Brown Carter Sr.
She is survived by a son, Carl Brown Carter Jr.; a daughter, Deborah L. Dodson of Warrenton; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The Rev. John Farrar led a funeral service Sept. 27, at Moser Chapel in Warrenton. Interment was in Little Georgetown Cemetery.

Fred Whitehead
U.S. Navy veteran
Fred William Whitehead, 79, of Warrenton, died Sept. 22, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Whitehead was born in Miami on Oct. 22, 1918, a son of the late Frederick A. and Gladys Whitehead. He spent eight years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He received a bachelor's degree in industrial management from Georgia Tech. He worked as a manager for IBM in Miami, Savannah, Fla., and Jacksonville, Fla., for 37 years. He was active with the Boy Scouts and a member of both Grace Methodist Church and Norland Methodist Church in Miami.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary R. Whitehead of Warrenton; two sons, Fred W. Whitehead Jr. of Cumberland Island, Georgia, and Rick Whitehead of Gainesville; three brothers: Tom Whitehead of Boyton Beach, Fla., Herb Whitehead of Windsor, S.C., and John Whitehead of Havana, Fla.; and one granddaughter.
The Rev. John Whitehead led a graveside service Sept. 26 at Little Georgetown Cemetery in Broad Run.
Matthew Maull

Matthew James Maull, 37 of Gainesville, died Sept. 27, 1998, at Pulaski Community Hospital in Pulaski.
Mr. Maull was born in California on Oct. 14, 1960. He was employed as an administrator for Lockheed Martin in Manassas for 17 years. He is survived by his parents, Edwin M. and Lillian I. Maull of Gainesville, and a brother, Mark E. Maull of Draper.
Funeral arrangements were private.

Viola Carter

Viola Carter, 66, of Warrenton died Sept. 24, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital.
Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 14, 1931.
She is survived by her husband, John Carter Jr. of Warrenton; a daughter, Eunice Carter of Manassas; two sisters, Margaret Walker of Warrenton and Gladys Horton of Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers, Clarence Horton and Eugene Horton, both of Warrenton; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Moyer Foddrell led a funeral service Sept. 29 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Warrenton. Interment was in Culpeper National Cemetery.
