Simon Demme
Army veteran
Simon P. "Sam" Demme, 62, of Warrenton died Oct. 20, 1998, at Medical College of Virginia Hospital.
Mr. Demme was born in Utica, N.Y., on Feb. 1, 1936, the son of the late Frank Demme and Bertha Lupia Demme. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Vietnam era. He retired in 1997 from Fairfax County, where he was the chief of the project section with the Bonds and Agreements Branch.
He is survived by a sister, Patricia Demme of Utica, N.Y.
A funeral service took place Oct. 24 at Moser Funeral Home. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hartford, N.Y.

James Long
Truck driver
James E. Long, 71, of Tahlequah, Okla., died Oct. 23, 1998.
Mr. Long was born in Bealeton on Aug. 23, 1927, the son of Helen Myers and Erdine Long. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a truck driver. He attended Calvary Assembly of God in Tahlequah, Okla.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Long; a son, James E. Long Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy Knott of Hollywood, Md.; five stepchildren: Cheryl Swafford, Karen Starr, Susan Weicht, Arlis Moon and Michael Moon, all of Oklahoma; five siblings: Carlyle Long of Bealeton, Arthur Long of Warrenton, Esther Jane Patton of Bristersburg, Frances Lomax and Charlotte Frazier, both of Warrenton; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place Oct. 28 at Moser Chapel. Interment was in Midland Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
Hazel Kononoff
Bealeton native
Hazel Marine Neale Kononoff, 82, of Miami died Oct. 27, 1998, after a short battle with cancer.
Mrs. Kononoff was raised in Bealeton on a dairy farm, one of nine children born to the late Wayland B. and Virginia James Neale. She graduated from Westhampton, the women's college at the University of Richmond, where she earned all-state honors in field hockey, basketball and tennis.
Her life in Miami began in 1942 when she arrived on a round-trip ticket, a gift from her father. After three days she cashed in the return ticket and took a job as an airport reporter, writing for Pan American Airways and the Miami Daily News. Later she returned to teaching and spent 14 years in Dade County schools, including David Fairchild Elementary.
While raising three children, Mrs. Kononoff did a lot of volunteer work, including serving as deputy director of the South Miami voting precinct. She was regent in the Coral Gables Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and worked for the United Way. She also launched a one-woman effort to erect a statue to Marjory Stoneman Douglas on Key Biscayne.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Lynch of Miami and Elizabeth Deane of Boston, Mass.; a son, James Kononoff of Miami; a brother, Harold Paul Neale of Bealeton; four sisters: Janice Neale Kehoe of Bealeton, Mildred Neale Baltz of Hagerstown, Md., Jessie Neale Jensen of Urbanna, Ill., and Marguerite Neale Moger of Lexington; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will take place at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at the Chapel of the Venerable Bede on the campus of the University of Miami. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bealeton.

Julia Canard
Former Warrenton resident
Julia Irene Canard, 82, of Church Road, formerly of Warrenton, died Oct. 25, 1998, at Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond.
Mrs. Canard was born in Fauquier County on Feb. 19, 1916, the daughter of the late Dudley Harvey Digges and Susie M. Digges. She was a resident of Warrenton for many years and a member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church. Since moving to Church Road 15 years ago she had attended Ocran United Methodist Church in Sutherland.
She was preceded in death by her husband Emmett M. Canard, and a daughter, Elizabeth Fitzsimmons.
She is survived by three brothers: Jack Digges of Adelphi, Md., Henry Digges of Bealeton, and Allen Digges of New Market; three sisters: Anne Miller of Dunn Loring, Betty Kuldell of Vienna and Suzanne Farnor of Catlett; and two granddaughters.
The Rev. Gene Tatum led a graveside service Oct. 27 at Warrenton Cemetery.

Virgal E. Yowell
Parts manager
Virgal Eugene Yowell, 81, of Rectortown, died Oct. 20, 1999, at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Born Dec. 18, 1917, in Delaplane, Mr. Yowell was a son of the late Cecil L. and Julia McGuinn Yowell.
Mr. Yowell worked as the parts manager at Northern Virginia Farm Center in Rectortown for 40 years.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Bettis Yowell; three daughters, Ethel V. Slack of The Plains, Barbara A. Allison of Greensboro, N.C., and Virgie Jean Leach of Rectortown; two sons, Anthony E. Yowell of Harper's Ferry, W.Va., and Stephen V. Yowell of Rectortown; a sister, Adella Nalls of Marshall; three brothers, Cecil Yowell of Rectortown, E. Warren Yowell of The Plains and Norman Yowell of Rectortown; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Jack Rudy conducted a service Oct. 23 at Royston Funeral Home in Marshall. Interment was in the Ivyhill Cemetery in Upperville.

Daryl T. Williams
Rokeby Farm gardener
Daryl Thomas Williams, 46, of Upperville, died Oct. 19, 1999, at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Born March 2, 1953, in Winchester, he was a son of the late George E. and Dorothy Kirkpatrick Williams.
Mr. Williams worked 20 years as a gardener at Rokeby Farm near Upperville.
Survivors include his wife, Delores A. Williams; two sons, Brian D. Williams and Kristopher M. Williams, both of Upperville, and a brother, Donald E. Williams of Upperville.
The Rev. Gary M. Chilies conducted a funeral service Oct. 23 at the Upperville Baptist Church. Interment was in the Ivyhill Cemetery in Upperville.
William D. Zarecor
Computer executive
William Donald Zarecor, 69, of Warrenton, died Oct. 20, 1999, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1930, in Wauneta, Neb.
Mr. Zarecor was a pioneer in the computer field. He began his career with IBM and worked on the Red Stone Rocket Program. He continued into computer-aided design and retired from the Intergraph Corp. as executive vice president. Mr. Zarecor was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Lu Zarecor of Warrenton; a son, John Zarecor of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Debbie Zarecor of Phoenix and Shannon Province of Waco, Texas, and 11 brothers and sisters.
A funeral took place Oct. 24 at the family home.

Phillip M. McClain
New Baltimore optician
Phillip Marvin McClain, 51, of New Baltimore, died Oct. 25, 1999, at Fauquier Hospital.
Born Jan. 17, 1948, in Cookeville, Tenn., he was a son of the late Marvin and Margery Rector McClain.
Mr. McClain was an optician and served as membership chairman of the New Baltimore Lions Club. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife, Mary S. McClain of New Baltimore; two sons, Phillip Mark McClain and Brian D. McClain, both of New Baltimore, and four sisters, Barbara Little, Patricia Howard, Wanda Powell and Tommie Stout, all of Cookeville, Tenn.
Mr. McClain was preceded in death by another sister, Jean Bowman.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the Hooper & Huddleston Funeral Home in Cookeville, Tenn.
A service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Cookeville funeral home. Interment will be in the Cookeville City Cemetery.
