Preston O. Melvin, 78, of Marshall, died Oct. 22, 1999, at his home.
Born March 8, 1921, in Sumerduck, he was a son of the late George and Margaret Virginia Compton Melvin.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Melvin for 30 years worked as a carpenter with Burroughs & Preston.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Anna Melvin; five daughters, Mary Anna Henry of Rixeyville, Margaret Thomas of Marshall, Linda Willingham of Ada, Helen Sowers of Manassas and Sylvia Melvin of Manassas; two sons, John Thomas Melvin of The Plains and Martin Melvin of Stafford; a brother, Raymond Melvin of Capital Heights, Md.; 21 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Herbert Leach conducted a service Oct. 26 at the Royston Funeral Home in Marshall. Interment was in the Orlean Cemetery.
Bill Bohon

Archie C. "Bill" Bohon Sr., 65, of Bealeton died Oct. 19, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital.
Mr. Bohon was born in Marshall on July 27, 1933, a son of Archie Dean and Juanita Murdock Bohon. He retired from the Culpeper Residency of the Virginia Department of Highways after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Green B. Bohon.
He is survived by his wife, Joan P. Bohon; his children: Kathy Barrington of The Plains, Archie C. Bohon Jr. of Amissville, Tina Ashworth of Apex, N.C., Kathy Orr of Raynham, Mass., and Vickie Hirt of Vienna; six sisters: Evelyn Saul, Virginia Farrow, Ruby Pugh and Betty Hill, all of Salem, and Sadie Bishop and Joyce Legg, both of Warrenton; three brothers: Jackson Bohon of Hickory, N.C., Leroy Bohon of Suffolk, and John Bohon of San Pedro, Calif.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Beth Chadsey and the Rev. Richard Ford will lead a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Warrenton United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Marshall Cemetery.

John McSweeney

John Patrick McSweeney, 64, of Broad Run died Oct. 16, 1998, at his home.
Mr. McSweeney was born in New York City on Dec. 31, 1933, the son of the late John Francis and Jane McSweeney. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked for Pan American Airways for 20 years as an administrator before joining the White House travel office. He transferred to the State Department in 1993 and retired in 1996.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen McSweeney.
He is survived by his wife, Kit McSweeney of Broad Run; two sons, Michael K. McSweeney of Amissville and James G. McSweeney of Middleburg; and a sister, Jean Dillon of Massapequa, N.Y.
Father Michael Bazan led a funeral service Oct. 20 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery.

Virginia Lee Clark Gill, 63, of Warrenton died Oct. 15, 1998, at Warrenton Overlook Care Center.
Mrs. Gill was born in Culpeper on Aug. 4, 1935, a daughter of the late Cecil Agneu and Alice Robinson Clark. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Remington.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Susan Gill of Warrenton; and two sisters, Alice Clark Yowell of Remington and Anne Hope Garnett of Locust Dale.

Jean Hitt Diggan, 78, of Culpeper died Oct. 16, 1998, at Culpeper Health Care Center.
Mrs. Diggan was born in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 31, 1919, the daughter of the late Roger Roswell Smith and Gertrude Newlon Smith.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Amos Dillard Hitt, and her second husband, Richard Diggan, Sr.
She is survived by two daughters, Tuttie H. Wilson of Culpeper and Kathleen Mercado of Warrenton; three sons: Wayne A. Leatherman of Pampa, Texas, James D. Hitt of Culpeper, and Theodore R. Hitt of Lynchburg; a sister, Nancy S. Palmer of Bethesda, Md.; a brother, Richard H. Smith of Hollywood, Fla.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Julian Lake Carter, 65, of Ada, died Oct. 15, 1998, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Mr. Carter was born in Fauquier County on May 28, 1933, the son of the late Sylvester and Nancy K. Carter. He was a self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Carter; two sons, Julian R. Carter of Manassas and Jesse L. Carter of Bealeton; a sister, Evelyn Darnell of Hume; a brother, Jessie Carter of Ada; and three grandchildren.

Barbara June Caylor, 63, of Woodbridge died Oct. 17, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Caylor was born July 17, 1935, a daughter of the late Harry and Mary Robinson Glascock. She was a retired supervisor with the telephone company.
She is survived by her husband, John H. Caylor; a son, Bruce Alan Caylor of Woodbridge; a sister, Sally G. Wyne of Marshall; five brothers: Wallace Glascock of Reedville, Eugene and David Glascock of Marshall, Chester Glascock of The Plains and Randolph Glascock of Bealeton; and a grandson.

Bernard Schwartz
Structural engineer
Bernard Schwartz, 75, of Delaplane, died of prostate cancer on Oct. 18, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Schwartz was a prominent structural engineer whose firm, Bernard Schwartz and Associates, designed many notable structures nationwide from the 1950's throughout he early 1990's. He moved to Fauquier County with his wife Anne D. Schwartz, following their retirement in 1995.
Mr. Schwartz was born in Philadelphia in 1923. He graduated from Drexel University in 1951. Prior to college he served in the army during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1947 he married the former Anne Dolin of Philadelphia.
Mr. Schwartz' engineering commissions include the restoration of the Sagamore Hotel at Lake George, N.Y., the Philadelphia Port of History Museum at Penn's Landing and many high-rise apartment buildings, hotels and office buildings throughout the country. Internationally, he collaborated with the late architect Louis I. Kahn on such projects as the Capital Building in Bangladesh and others. His last engineering project before his retirement was the design of the new Corestates Arena in Philadelphia for the Philadelphia Flyers and 76'ers.
He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Anne Schwartz of Delaplane; his brother Milton Schwartz of Sandwich, Mass; a daughter, Dr. Carol M. Schwartz of Columbia, Md.; a son, Peter B. Schwartz of Delaplane; and three grandsons.
A memorial service will be held in Philadelphia.

George Vaughan
Army veteran
George William "Bill" Vaughan, 81, of Manassas died Oct. 18, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Vaughan was born Sept. 18, 1917, to the late George O. Vaughan and Georgie L. Wilson Vaughan. During World War II he served with the First Armored Division of the Field Artillery. Sgt. Vaughan saw service in the campaigns of Tunisia, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley. He was awarded the good conduct medal, the American Defense Services Medal the European, African and Middle Eastern service medal and the distinguished unit badge. He received an honorable discharge on July 1, 1945.
He is survived by three sisters: Marjorie L. Green and Virginia M. Green, both of Culpeper, and Ann E. Hanback of Manassas.
The Rev. Kenneth F. Honeycutt will lead a funeral service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Found and Sons Chapel in Culpeper. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery with full military honors presented by VFW Post 2524 and American Legion Post 330.
