Mercedez Ranne Cox, infant daughter of Angelica Cox and William Whitt of Tazewell, died Oct. 11, 2002 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
She was born Oct. 2 in Bluefield, WV.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Jimmy Thompson and maternal great-grandfather, Conrad Davis.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. James Dennis officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
Ollie M. Cox
Ollie Marie Robinson Cox, 74, of the Deskins Fork section of Vansant, died Oct. 15, 2002 at the Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Chris and Stella Mae O’Quinn Robinson.
She was a member of the Stone Coal Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Omar Cox on July 25, 2001; one son, Randall Omar Cox; and five brothers, Evans Tom Robinson, Quentin Robinson, Bonsel Robinson, Robert Chris Robinson, Jr. and Omar Robinson.
Survivors: daughter, Evelyn Kay Cook of Belfast; sons, Alvin Cox and Jimmy Cox, both of Vansant; sisters, Irene Stiltner of Bristol, VA, Kathleen Stiltner and Gaynell Jackson, both of Vansant, Algeva Hagy of Powhatan; grandchildren, Monica Cox, Jimmy Cox and Scotty Cox; and great-granddaughter, Alexis Skye Cox.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Danny Smith, Delford Ward and Ked Stacy officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.

Betty C. Crookshanks
Betty Carol Crookshanks, 55, of Rt. 3, Cedar Bluff, formerly of Hazard, KY, died Oct. 12, 2002 following an apparent heart attack.
Born in Perry County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Zola Osborne Campbell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Greg Crookshanks, and one sister, Jackie Boggs.
Survivors: husband of 33 years, Warren David Crookshanks; brother, Gary Campbell and wife, Nora, of Hazard; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Petrey Memorial Baptist Church at Hazard with Pastor Ronnie (Butch) Pennington officiating.
Burial will follow in the Campbell Family Cemetery on Brown’s Fork near Hazard.

Ernest R. Dye
Ernest Ralph Dye, 96, of Honaker, died Oct. 16, 2002 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Oct. 25, 1905 in Wise Co., he was a son of the late Hugh and Dorthea McCloud Dye.
He had resided in the Honaker area for the past 50 years and was a member of the Tunnell Hill Freewill Baptist Church.
He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Klarney Mining Company in Klarney, WV, and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nunie Dye, and two daughters, Phyllis Ann Gillam and Lois Marie Easterling. In his generation he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors: sons, Rev. Ralph Dye of Honaker, Edward Dye of Hanes City, FL, Kenneth Dye of Bluefield, VA; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Howard Reynolds officiating.
Interment will follow in the Russell Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon.
James H. Foster
James Harold Foster, 49, of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 13, 2002 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Grundy, he was a son of Betty Foster Stiltner of Belfast and the late James M. Foster.
He had lived most of his life in the Russell County area and was a member of the Copper Ridge Independent Baptist Church in Cleveland. He was a disabled coal miner having been employed by Island Creek Coal Company.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny D. Foster, and one stepbrother, Greg Stiltner.
Survivors: wife, Mavis Reynolds Foster; mother and stepfather, Betty and Carson Stiltner, both of Belfast; sisters, Mrs. David (Teresa) Powers of Honaker, Mrs. Archie (Cathy) White of Whitewood, Mrs. James (Becky) Osborne of Lebanon; brothers, Danny Foster and Mark Foster, both of Belfast; maternal grandmother, Euna Boyd of Grundy; stepsisters, Bernice Waugh of Lebanon, Lexie Davis, Joyce Stiltner and Charlene Stiltner, all of Grundy; special mother-in-law, Maggie Reynolds Lowe of Cedar Bluff; special brothers-in-law, Harvey Lynn and Connie Reynolds, and Jacob Reynolds, all of Cedar Bluff, Samuel and Donna Reynolds and Matthew Reynolds, all of Abingdon; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Clyde (Junior) Fox, Jr.
Clyde M. (Junior) Fox, Jr., 77, of Hartwell, WV, died Oct. 11, 2002 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN.
Born in Newhall, WV, he was a son of the late Clyde Morris Fox, Sr. and the late Sarah Alta Fox.
He attended the Church of God in Hartwell. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II having served in the Hawaiian Islands. He retired from Consolidation Coal Company after 35 years of service and was a member of the UMWA Local #6633 at Hartwell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Fox and Jim Fox, and one sister, Jean Cain.
Survivors: wife of 44 years, Imogene N. Fox; son, Tommy Fox and wife, Lydonia, of Bishop; sisters, Fern Givens of Dayton, OH, Merle Lockhart of Hartwell; grandchildren, Brock T. Fox and wife, Kim, and Tammy Rose and husband, Tommy, all of Lexington, KY, Heather C. Vernon N. Hoback
Vernon Nelson Hoback, 91, of North Tazewell, died Oct. 12, 2002 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born at Burkes Garden, he was the son of the late Luther F. Hoback and Bessie B. Repass Hoback.
He was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Tazewell Family Worship Center. He retired from Consolidation Coal Company after 39 years of service and was a member of the UMWA Local #6025 at Bishop.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ernestine Witt Hoback, and one daughter, Jean H. Gillespie.
Survivors: wife of 33 years, Alice Rife Hoback; son, Donald R. Hoback of Bluefield, VA; stepson, Bill Burnett and wife, Sandy, of Galax; stepdaughter, Helen Diaco and husband, Vic, of California; son-in-law, Jack R. Gillespie of Great Falls; sister, Juanita Kaufman of Maryland; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Linda Horn
Linda Horn, 75, of English, WV, died Oct. 14, 2002 in a Bluefield, WV, hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Garland, WV, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Mary Church Horn, both West Virginia natives.
She had made her home in the English area most of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Homer Tommy Horn; one daughter-in-law, Tammy Star Horn; one sister, Brooke Horn; and one brother, Luther Horn.
Survivors: daughters, Ozella Keene and husband, Freddie, of English, Agnes Sue Crusenberry and husband, Steve Hankins, of Cucumber, WV, Corina Dobson and husband, Burnice, of War, WV, Carol Hankins Hicks and husband, William, of Amonate; sons, Ervin Horn and wife, Brenda, and Nathan Horn and wife, Myrtle, all of War, WV, Marvin Horn and wife, Fairy, of English, Ray Horn of English, with whom she made her home; sisters, Pauline Cavanaugh and Floreine Horn, both of Detroit, MI; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Pentecostal Holiness Church at #2 Yukon, WV, with the Rev. Charlie Barker officiating.
Interment will follow at Hartwell Cemetery in Hartwell, WV.

Roy F. Horn
Roy F. Horn, 67, of East Canton, OH, formerly of Buchanan County, died Oct. 12, 2002 in Auitman hospital following a long illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Nora Vandyke Horn.
He was an East Canton area resident for the past 32 years and retired from LTV Steel in 1982 after 22 years of service. He attended the Maplebrook Church of God, was a charter member of the American Sportsman’s Club, a member of the Mapleton Gun Club and was an avid hunter, shooter and horseman. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Willie Horn, Elmer Horn, Coy Horn and Hufford Horn; five sisters, Adna Smith, Margie Cantrell, Kansas Meadows, Queenie Lamb and Audrey Frances Kelly; and one daughter, Nora Sue Fairchild.
Survivors: wife of 41 years, Peggy Sue Irick Horn; sons, Roy (J.R.) Horn and wife, Konnie, of Minerva, OH, Randy Horn and wife, Tina, of East Canton; grandchildren, Heather Sue Early of Canton, Jorden Fairchild of Minerva; sister, Mrs. Herbert (Joy Sue) Short of Powhatan; and many friends with whom he shared his hobbies.

Arvin I. Lester
Arvin I. Lester, 78, of Woodbridge, formerly of Tazewell County, died Oct. 12, 2002 in a Alexandria nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Grat W. and Della M. Vencill Lester, both Tazewell County natives.
He had made his home in the Woodbridge area for the past 20 years and was a retired farmer. He was a former member of the Belfast Community Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ollivene Patrick, Elizabeth Whitt and Dolly Anderson, and five brothers, Garman Lester, Warren Lester, Hubert Lester, Don Lester and Bob Lester.
Survivors: sisters, Evelene Deskins of Farmville, Louise Rupert of Woodbridge, and brothers, Marvin Lester of Belfast, Kenneth Lester of Newburn, and Eugene Lester of Farmville.

Dianna G. Smeltzer
Dianna Gail Sparks Smeltzer, 51, of Amonate, died Oct. 16, 2002 in a Bristol, TN, hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of Rosa Bandy Altizer of Amonate, and the late Charlie Altizer.

Smeltzer; daughter, Debra Denise Sparks of Bandy; son, Matthew Perry Sparks of Bandy; sister, Deborah Owens and husband, Ronald, of Amonate; brothers, Moody Altizer and wife, Alice, of Rosedale, Steve Altizer and wife, Ann, of Amonate, Butch Altizer and wife, Velma, of Bandy; and nieces and nephews, Stevie Altizer, Eric Altizer, Dustin Altizer, Jessica Altizer, Charlie Dale Altizer, Charlena Altizer and Jesse Altizer.

Coy L. Sword
Coy Lee Sword, 75, of the Kents Ridge road section of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 11, 2002 in a Richlands hospital following an illness of several months.
Born in Corn Valley, he was the son of the late Elijah Harrison and Minnie Ethel Poston Sword, both Russell County natives.
He had made his home in the Tazewell County area most of his life and was retired from the Pounding Mill Quarry, having worked there for 32 years. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and eight brothers.
Survivors: wife, Ruth C. Lester Sword; sisters, Thelma Bandy of Rising Sun, MD, Ethel Helton of Corn Valley; brother, Roy Clinton Sword of Old Fort, NC; and many special friends and relatives.

Betty Lou Barrett
Betty Lou Helton Barrett, 66, of Honaker, died Oct. 22, 2002 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born in Elk Garden, she was a daughter of Ideal Hannah Helton of Rosedale and the late A.R. Helton.
She had spent most of her life in the Honaker area and was a member of the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Choir and a Sunday School teacher. She was a senior sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one devoted uncle, Bill Hess.

Virginia Campbell
Virginia Campbell, 84, of Fairmont, WV, formerly of Richlands, died Oct. 21, 2002 in Fairmont following a lengthy illness.
Born in Honaker, she was the daughter of the late William Draden and Nora Elizabeth Reynolds Hooker.
She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richlands. She was very active in the Richlands community and helped establish "Christmas Tree Hill."
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: son, Peter D. Campbell of Fairmont; grandchildren, Jennifer Campbell and Ann Arnold, both of Phoenix, AZ, Peter D. Campbell of Seattle, WA; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Father Tom Collins officiating.
Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
