Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Cecil F. Gross

Cecil Floyd Gross, 78, of Richlands, died Oct. 22, 2002 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.

Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late James Allen and Bertha Mae Hagy Gross.

He was retired from General Shale.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Joe Gross, Carl Gross and Conley Gross.

Survivors: sisters, Katherine Marshall of Richlands, Pearl Marshall of Cedar Bluff, Beatrice Holmes of Swords Creek; and brothers, Clayton Gross of Richlands and Glen Gross of Doran.

The funeral will be conducted Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Danny Houchins and Rev. Elmer Compton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Arbutus Hale

Arbutus Hale, 53, of Oakwood, died Oct. 22, 2002 in a Richlands hospital following a long battle with cancer.

Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Jessie and Emma Perkins Hale.

A lifelong resident of the Swords Creek and Buchanan County areas, she was a member of the Perkins Chapel at Swords Creek.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Cordelia Drevyonk and Beulah Radvonkic; four brothers, Junior Hale, Ralph Hale, Marvin Hale and Edward Hale; and one grandson, Steven Chapman Jr.

Survivors: husband, Larry Hale; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Steven Chapman of Boone, NC, Shelia and David Perkins of Swords Creek; son, David Hale of Oakwood; sisters, Marie Beasley of Hammond, IN, Nadine Coleman of Pax, WV, Gayle Curtis and Shirley Regan, both of Maryville, TN; brother, Bobby Hale of Swords Creek; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. David Perkins and Bro. Junior Ray officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Nelchene E. Sharpe

Nelchene Elizabeth Wilson Sharpe, of Jacksonville Beach, FL, died Oct. 23, 2002.

She was a native of Russell and Tazewell Counties in Virginia before making her home in Florida for 40 years. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Douglas Wilson and Hattie Ball Wilson; one brother, George Otis Wilson; one son, Tommy Douglas Lewis Wilson; and husband, William Sharpe Sr.

Survivors: sons, William Sharpe Jr. and Gregory Sharpe of Jackonville, FL; sister, Betty Jo McGlothlin of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Leslie E. Wilson of Cedar Bluff, Donald L. Wilson of Elizabethton, TN, and Daytona Beach, FL; granddaughters, Crystal O’Neil of Wichita, KS, Renee Sharpe and Rachel Sharpe, both of Jacksonville; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted Oct. 26 at Hardage-Gidden Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach.

Irene P. Altizer

Irene Pearl Altizer, 90, of Front Royal, formerly of Squire, WV, died Dec. 2, 2002 at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

Born in War, WV, she was the daughter of the late Emmett Patton and Mary Frances Shrader Patton.

She was a devoted Sunday School teacher for 40 years at the Squire Freewill Baptist Church and Squire Temple Church.

She was the widow of Haynes K. Altizer.

Survivors: daughters, Judith Weakley and husband, John, of Fredericksburg, Patsy Hicks and husband, Donald, of Front Royal; sons, Robert Altizer Sr. and wife, Joyce, of Fairfax, William Altizer and wife, Betty, of Front Royal; brother, Jack Patton; sister-in-law, Doris Altizer of Squire; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. with Pastor Danny Clegg officiating.

A funeral service was conducted at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Gunter officiating.

Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Olis Fletcher

Olis Fletcher, age 71, of Claypool Hill, died Dec. 3, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Mary Elswick Fletcher, both Buchanan County natives.

He was a retired miner with Jewell Ridge Coal Corp. at Jewell Valley and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union #7327. He had made his home in the Claypool area most of his life, was a U. S. Army Korean War Veteran and was a member of the Reynolds Ridge Community Church.

Survivors: wife, Janet Sizemore Fletcher; daughters, Mrs. Terry (Donna Jean) Shortt of Abingdon, Mrs. Thomas (Nesta) Sparks of Winston-Salem, NC; sisters, Fern Hudson and Effie Davis, both of Tampa, FL, Uva McDilda of Abingdon; brother, Waldon Fletcher of Tampa; grandchild, Clinton Olis Sparks; step-grandchildren, Kevin Dean Shortt and Christopher Bradley Shortt; and great-grandchildren, Tristen Wayne Sparks and Clara Breann Sparks.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Lawrence Hayes and Rev. Rick Pruitt officiating.

Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 of Richlands and the Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter #31 conducted military graveside rites.

William C. Fletcher

William Clyde Fletcher, 88, of Honaker, died Dec. 2, 2002 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born in Deskins, he was a son of the late James Brock and Rachel Vandyke Fletcher.

He had lived in the Honaker area for the past 33 years, moving there from Buchanan County. He was a retired coal miner having been employed by Pittston Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA Local 1256. He was a member of the Concord New Garden Primitive Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Annie Breeding, Ollie Wilkey and Florence Fletcher, and three brothers, Henry Fletcher, Glen Fletcher and Quay Fletcher. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors: wife of 56 years, Gladys Fletcher; sons and daughters-in-law, William Ersel and Ella Deane Fletcher of Glade Springs, Charles Guy and Jeannie Fletcher of Honaker; grandchildren, Tammy Montgomery of Glade Springs, Shannon Fletcher of Honaker, Maressa Monk of Bristol, Renita Hicks of Athens, TN; and great-grandchildren, Lindsey Massie, Madison Massie, Lance Monk and Michaela Monk.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Elder Danny Smith, Elder Otis Fields, Elder Ked Stacy, Elder Joe Edwards and Elder George Ben Combs officiating.

Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Raymond McBride

Raymond McBride, 79, of the Stoney Ridge section of North Tazewell, died Dec. 3, 2002 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born in the Mudfork section of North Tazewell, he was a son of the late Robert Edison and Harriet Alice Mundy McBride.

He was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, a United States Navy veteran of World War II, and had retired from U.S. Steel in 1982. He was a member of the Republican Party and had worked the polling stations in Bishop for over 20 years. He was a member of Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church for 60 years. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for 58 of those years. He had also served as the Chairman of the Administrative Council and the Chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee of the Bishop Charge of Bishop. He had served over the years on various other committees among them the Nominating and Finance Committees. He was also the Layman Delegate to the Holston United Methodist Church Conference. He faithfully served his Lord and the church with all the zeal of a true man of God. He lived his life for his Lord, his family, and his church and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Robin McBride, and two brothers, Harry McBride and Marvin McBride.

Survivors: wife of 50 years, Lola Ball McBride; daughter, Marilyn Creasy and her husband, Douglas, of North Tazewell; son, The Rev. Gordon McBride and his wife, Peggy, of Whitwell, TN; sister, Mary Ellen White of Kingsport, TN; brother, Melvin McBride of Bristol; grandchildren, Amy and Justin Creasy, both of North Tazewell; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenny Fields and the Rev. Ted Anders officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Joe D. Nuckols

Joe D. Nuckols, 74, of Bluefield, VA, died Dec. 2, 2002 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born in Chatham, he was a son of the late Andrew T. Nuckols and Peggy E. Bailey Nuckols Garrett.

He was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA. He was retired from Industrial Gas & Supply Co. and was a former employee for Blacor Steel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and also was a member of the Bluefield Moose Lodge #1079.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Ann Witt and Talmadge Barbour.

Survivors: wife, Charlotte Witt Nuckols; daughters, Diane N. McGinnis and husband, John H. IV, of Bluefield, VA, Teresa N. Hicks of Bluefield, WV; and son, Joseph Dwayne Nuckols and friend, Pamela Hinkle, both of Bluefield, VA.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Larry Ramey and Rev. Larry Murphy officiating.

Burial followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens at Princeton, WV.

Ellen Perkins

Ellen Perkins, 89, of Cedar Bluff, formerly of Swords Creek, died Dec. 3, 2002 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Jan. 17, 1913 in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Fleming Thomas and Laura Frances Dye Perkins.

She had spent most of her life in the Swords Creek area and was of the Free Will Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos J. Perkins; one son, Carlos Wayne Perkins; two sisters, Rosa Hill and Flossie Durbin; four brothers, Floyd Perkins, Joe Perkins, Luther Perkins and J.C. Perkins; and one grandson, Douglas Stephen Robertson.

Survivors: daughters, Wanda Robertson-Greear and husband, Howard, of Hansonville, Mrs. George (Frances) Adkins of Cedar Bluff; son, Dallas Perkins and wife, Charlotte, of Swords Creek; sister, Etta Jackson and husband, John, of Findlay, OH; brother, Kelly Perkins and wife, Pat, of Findlay; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and special caregivers, Tama Wright and the Home Independent Health Nurses of Rosedale.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Fairley Spencer, Rev. David Perkins an Rev. Scotty Perkins officiating.

Interment followed in the Perkins Cemetery at Drill.

Edith A. Shortridge

Edith Alene Shortridge, 87, of Richlands, died Dec. 3, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Cedar Bluff, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Nancy Brown Cruey, both Tazewell County natives.

She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was the founder and former owner of Cinderella Beauty Shop in Richlands. She was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church and a member of the Richlands Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #104.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, I.C. “Turk” Shortridge; one son, Ronald Shortridge; four sisters, Lona Hubbard, Dolly Smith, Lena Layman and Clara Shamblin; and five brothers, Jake Cruey, Bill Cruey, Charles Cruey, Nepolian Cruey and Alfred Cruey. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: son, Kenneth Shortridge and wife, Brenda, of Belfast; special grandson, Kenneth Shortridge, Jr.; special friend and caregiver, Betty Stiltner; grandchildren, Kimberly Wright, Rebecca Shortridge, Stephanie Shelton, Karen Cole and Debbie Shortridge; and great-grandchildren, Patrick Cole, Travis Cole, Nicholas Cole, Stacey Cole, Austin Shelton and Victoria Shelton.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Bobby Laney officiating.

Entombment followed at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill.

Members of Richlands Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #104 conducted services Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.

Arnold Ball

Arnold Ball, 77, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, died Jan. 27, 2003 in a Richlands hospital.

Born March 11, 1925 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Rosie Whited Ball.

He was a lifelong resident of the Council area, was a disabled coal miner and a member of the House of Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Benny Ball and Lawson Ball, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: wife, Edna Ball; daughters, Hester Owens of Cumberland, Juanita Hale of Patterson; sons, Leroy Ball, Wesley Ball and Timothy Ball, all of Council, Chester Ball of Honaker; step-daughter, Betty Lowe of Honaker; step-sons, Ricky Harris and Hulas Helton, both of Council, Virgil Helton of Rowe; sister, Viola Guynn of Honaker; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson, Rev. Ralph Dye and Rev. Billy Harris officiating.

Interment followed in the Baldwin Cemetery at Drill.

Richard H. Blankenship

Richard Heath Blankenship, 25, of Hurley, died Feb. 1, 2003 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following a short illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Stuart Ray and Anita Bailey Blankenship of Hurley.

He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a graduate of Hurley High School Class of 1996.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Lee Blankenship, and maternal grandfather, Clyde Bailey.

Additional survivors: brother, Rodney Adam Blankenship of Hurley; paternal grandmother, Mabel Blankenship of Hurley; maternal grandmother, Kathleen Bailey of Hurley; and one niece.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at Blackey Baptist Church in Hurley with Revs. Bill Frazier, Paul Rife and Curtis Gibson officiating.

Burial will follow in Mary Lou Cemetery on State Line Ridge No. 1 at Paynesville, WV.

Services were conducted Feb. 3 with Elders Roger Coleman, Curtis Crouse and Roscoe Crouse and Feb. 4 by Revs. Bill Frazier, Paul Rife and Curtis Gibson.

Grundy Funeral Home, of Grundy, is in charge of arrangements.

Virgie May Cantrell

Virgie May Cantrell, 89, of the Horn Mountain section of Buchanan County, died Feb. 3, 2003 at Russell County Medical Center following a long illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late John Harvey and Ettie Jane Grizzle Cantrell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Rosalene Boyd, Cecile Boyd and Delillian Cantrell; and one brother, Andy Basil Cantrell.

Survivors: sisters, Hattie Kite of Limestone, TN, Elsie C. Friend of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Edward Cantrell and wife, Eunice, of Wabash, IN, Calvin Cantrell and wife, Edith, of Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Eddie Noe and Rev. Troy Lester officiating.

Burial will follow at the Cantrell Family Cemetery at Horn Mountain.

Friends may call at the funeral home Feb. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Snodie E. Clark

Snodie Edith Clark, 74, of the Garden Creek section of Oakwood, died Jan. 28, 2003 in a Grundy hospital.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Henry White and Luria Short White Street.

She was a lifelong resident of the area, was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Clark and her step-father, Lee Street.

Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine and Bill Butts of Alexandria, Mary and Frank Reedy of Princeton, WV, Sharon and Dennis Blankenship of Grundy; son and daughter-in-law, Arnold Linden and Pamela Clark of Oakwood; sisters, Cloie Matney of Mavisdale, Gay Bostic of Richlands, Juanita Osborne of Grundy; brothers, Otis Street of Garden Creek, Ferrell Street of Richlands; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. James Chapman, Rev. Charles Hubbard and Rev. Junior Rife officiating.

Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
