Betty G. Windsor
Betty Gean Windsor, 61, of the Edgewater Drive section of Cedar Bluff, died May 24, 2003 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence J. and Hazel Irene Arnold Keene, both Tazewell County natives.
She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area the past 20 years and was a member of the Raven Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was also a member of the Appalachian Agency of Senior Citizens and the Richlands Ark House.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Brooks and Billy Lee Flake; and one sister, Jacqueline Burnette.
Survivors: daughters, Selina Brown of Grundy, Mrs. Tonie Gene Flake and Charlene Butler, both of Indianapolis, IN; sons, Roger Dwane Flake and Terry Flake, both of Indianapolis, Dwane Arnold, address unknown; sister, Nancy Holmes of Paintlick; stepmother, Teresa Keene of Jewell Ridge; half-brothers, Michael Keene of North Carolina, Darrell Keene of Jewell Ridge, Phillip Keene of Pounding Mill; and two grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted May 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Clarence Brown officiating.
Interment followed in the Goss and Arnold Family Cemetery at Jewell Ridge.
Jackie C. Beavers, Jr.
Jackie Clifford Beavers, Jr., 41, of Pulaski, formerly of Bishop, died June 3, 2003 at Giles County.
Born in Tazewell, he was a son of Betty Jo Altizer Beavers of Tazewell and Jack Beavers, and wife, Carolyn of Kentucky.
He attended Dilce Combs High School in Perry County. He was employed by DBT America, Inc. of Hillsville.
Additional survivors: loving fiancée of two years, Linda Suthers of Pulaski; daughter, Misty Gail Beavers of Berea, KY; grandmother, Hallie Marie Altizer of Mudfork; sisters, Faye Tyree and husband, David, of Sanford, NC, Anita Harman of Floyd; brother, Billy Beavers and wife, Teresa, of Rockingham, NC; stepsister, Jacklyn Beavers of Kentucky; stepbrother, Chris Beavers of Kentucky; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and a multitude of friends.
The funeral was conducted June 8 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Lawrence Hayes officiating.
Burial followed at the Woodall Cemetery at Grassy Spur.
Johnny R. Brewster
Johnny Ralph Brewster, 46, of Bradshaw, WV, died June 5, 2003 at his residence in McDowell County, WV, following injuries sustained during an accident.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Carl and Jeanette Brewster of Pilgrim Knob.
He was a coal miner. He was a member of The Church of God at Bradshaw.
Additional survivors: wife of 22 years, Betty Sue Davis Brewster; son, John Aaron Brewster of Gatlinburg, TN; daughter, Shawna Michelle Brewster of the home; brothers, Jerry Brewster and wife, Jackie, of Richlands, Tommy Brewster and wife, Debbie, of Baistan; and sisters, Debbie Riordan and husband, Charles, of Pilgrim Knob, Donna Yates and husband, Wendell, of Vansant, Sherry Wagner and husband, Timmy, of Pilgrim Knob.
The funeral was conducted June 8 at 2 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Lacey Davis, Rev. Freddie Rife, Rev. Cassie Rife and Rev. Fred Rife Jr. officiating.
Burial followed in the Esaw Rife Cemetery at Keen Mountain.
Bertina (Judy) Cantrell
Bertina L. (Judy) Cantrell, 58, of Cliffield, died June 5, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Lydia Horn Osborne.
Survivors: husband of 39 years, John Lee Cantrell; daughter, Donna Bass of Cliffield; son, Gary Cantrell and wife, Linda, of Thompson Valley; grandchildren, Mason Colley, Leanna Cantrell and Steven Cantrell; sisters, Mrs. Lester (Delores) Meadows of Cliffield, Virginia (Doll) Stilwell and Juanita Stilwell, both of Raven, Mrs. Glen (Arlene) Boyd of Blountville, TN; and brothers, Joe Osborne and wife, Betty, and Jay Osborne and wife, Charlotte, all of Cliffield.

Josie Casey
Josie Casey, 63, of Lebanon, formerly of Cedar Bluff, died June 6, 2003 in a Lebanon health care center.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late James and Margie Gross Keen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Casey; three infant sisters; one infant brother; one sister, Lucille Newberry Cox; and two brothers, Sherman Keen and Finley Keen.
Survivors: sons, Michael Casey and wife, Donna, of Pounding Mill, Derek Casey of Superior, WI; special sisters, Eva Goins Wright of Richlands, Mrs. Roger (Princess) Brown of Raven; brothers, Gordon Keen of Pounding Mill, Roger Keen of Baptist Valley; grandchildren, Michael Wayne Casey, Sarah Casey and Michelle Casey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Dorcie Newberry; and special niece, Teresa Newberry Binns.

Maged J. Farah, MD
Maged J. Farah, MD, 47, of Tazewell, died June 3, 2003 at a Richlands hospital.
Born at Gaza, Palestine, he was a son of the late Jawwad and Evelyn Madbak Farah.
Doctor Farah had made his home in Tazewell County for the past 15 years. He was an Endocrinologist at Clinch Valley Medical Center Plaza for over 15 years. He attended St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Bluefield, WV. He was a member of the Endocrinology Medical Association and the Diabetes Association.
Survivors: wife, Heba A. Farah; daughter, Evelyn Farah of the home; son, Gaby Farah of the home; sisters, Ghada Farah of United Arab Emirates, Mona Farah of Gaza, Palestine; brothers, Maher Farah of France, Saad Farah of United Arab Emirates, Nasser Farah of Gaza, Palestine; and his patients he has seen throughout the years of his practice.
The funeral was conducted June 8 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Father Mark Tyson officiating.
Interment followed in Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield, VA.

Carl M. Baker
Carl M. Baker, 81, of Tazewell, died July 24, 2003 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.
Born at Clintwood, he was a son of the late Craig and Margaret Priode Baker.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after many years service with the United States Army and Army Reserves. He was a 50 year member of the Clintwood Masonic Lodge #66 A.F. & A.M. Prior to his retirement, he worked as an engineer for 35 years with the USDA – US Soil and Water Conservation Service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles D. Baker, and one sister, Carrie Lee Harl.
Survivors: wife, Carol M. Baker; son, Ronald Baker and wife, Terri of Salem; daughter, Carla Cline and husband, Joe, of North Tazewell; sister, Ama Friend and husband, Jerry, of Dunnsville; sister-in-law, Margaret Baker of Clintwood; and grandchildren, Nathan Cline and Gracey Cline.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. July 26 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell with Minister Chris White officiating.
Military graveside rites were conducted by members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association Memorial Program: P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Willie K. Coleman
Willie Kenneth Coleman, 68, of Grundy, died July 23, 2003 at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Phelps, KY, he was a son of the late George and Garnet Wolford Coleman.
He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was of the Protestant faith. He served in the United States Army for 21 years serving in Korea, Vietnam and Germany receiving the Sharpshooter Badge M-14, Expert Badge M-16, GCMDL (2, 3, 4 Award), VSM, VCM w/60 device and 4-0/S Bars. He was a member of the John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion and Childs Gentry Post No. 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. After retiring from the Armed Forces, he was employed as a truck driver and repairman.
He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Keith Coleman; and one nephew, George S. Lester.
Survivors: wife, Deloris Nickels Coleman; sons, Tracy Kinder of Harrisonburg, Scottie Kinder of Richlands; sisters, Claris Lester of Grundy, Margie Collier of Greensboro, NC; brother, Roger Lee Coleman of Grundy; and grandson, Chase Kinder.
The funeral was conducted July 26 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent, Mike Rife and Jerry Edwards officiating.
Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Services were held July 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
Pearl F. Crabtree
Pearl F. Crabtree, 67, of Rancho Cordova, CA, died July 25, 2003 at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, CA.
Born in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Clarence and Rose Belle Kincer Frost Lowe.
She had worked at the Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands for a number of years in the 1950’s before moving to Newport News, Niceville, FL, and California. She had a special loving and caring bond with her husband, daughter and grandchildren and has always been there for them, putting more concern for their health and well being ahead of her own. She also had the deepest respect and love for her friends and kept them close for life. She was always referred to as “the sweetest thing” by all that knew her. Her legacy will be the passing on by example of “goodness” of character to her daughter and grandchildren to emulate in their own lifetime. She will be missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death were one son, David L. Crabtree (died at birth); four brothers, Arnold Frost, Jack Frost, Allen Frost and Earl Lowe; and one sister, Lucille Frost Smith.
Survivors: husband of 49 years, Robert L. Crabtree; daughter, Donna S. Reynolds; grandchildren, Christi L. Reynolds and Tara L. Reynolds, both of Rancho Cordova, David W. Reynolds of US Navy; sister, Jackie Frost Crigger of Virginia Beach; and brother, C.A. Lowe of Grovetown, GA.
In keeping with her wishes she was cremated.
Memorials services were conducted at 2 p.m. July 28 at the Rancho Cordova Mortuary located at East Lawn in Rancho Cordova.

Patricia Kaye Gentry
Patricia Kaye Wimmer Gentry, 49, of North Tazewell, died July 25, 2003, at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.
Born in Tazewell, she was a daughter of Ray and Elizabeth Wimmer of North Tazewell.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Fincastle Baptist Church in Tazewell. She had worked as a nurse for 14 years and in the latter part of her career, she had been employed by Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Harry E. and Anna Lee Hoops, and her paternal grandparents, John Q. Wimmer, Sr. and Cora Lee Wimmer.
Additional survivors: sisters, Linda Lamantia and Betty Martinez, both of Buford, SC, Susan Wimmer of Tazewell; two nephews; four nieces; and four great nieces.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 28 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Bill Wyrick and the Rev. Dwight Eads officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
Buford E. Gilbert, Sr.
Buford Earl Gilbert, Sr., 67, of Cedar Bluff, died July 23, 2003 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Jewell Ridge, he was a son of the late Bliss and Lillie Boyd Gilbert, both Tazewell County natives.
He had made his home in the Jewell Ridge and Richlands areas most of his life and was a disabled miner for Jewell Ridge Coal Corp. at Jewell Ridge. He was a U. S. Navy Korean War Veteran and was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Alfred Gilbert.
Survivors: wife, Louise Taylor Gilbert; daughters, Donna Pack of Cocoa, FL, Diana Gilbert of Richlands; sons, Buford E. Gilbert, Jr., Larry Gilbert, Ricky Gilbert, David Gilbert, Jerry Gilbert and Gary Gilbert, all of Richlands; sister, Charlotte Barrett of Richlands; brothers, Gene Gilbert of South Carolina, Johnny Gilbert of Jewell Ridge; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted July 25 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Ralph Horton officiating.
Interment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
William E. Jones
William Eugene Jones, 34, of Tazewell, died July 23, 2003 in a Tazewell hospital.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Eula Helton Dye of Honaker.
He had spent most of his life in the area and was a resident of Heritage Hall of Tazewell.
He was of the Holiness faith.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mable Helton.
Survivors: mother and stepfather, Eula and Thomas Dye of Honaker; sisters, Jennifer Woody of Tazewell, Tammy Dye of Honaker, Shirley Thomas of Pulaski; brother, Thomas Kenneth Dye of Honaker; maternal grandfather, Elijah Helton of Oakwood; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 27 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Mike Ryan officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Paul Jefferson
“Jeff” Martin, Jr.
Paul Jefferson “Jeff” Martin, Jr., 55, of Mobile, AL, died July 17, 2003 at Providence Hospital in Mobile, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Elizabeth (Fox) Martin of Mobile and the late Paul Jefferson Martin, Sr.
He attended schools in Hillsville and Tuscaloosa, AL, and graduated from John McDonough High School in New Orleans, LA. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of South Alabama in Mobile and did post graduate work there in English. While a student, he served six years as sports editor for the student newspaper and he was the university’s first Sports Information Director. A freelance sportswriter, he also wrote for the Mobile Press Register and was published in Coach and Athlete.
He was a caring and dedicated teacher who taught English in Mobile County Public Schools 31 years, retiring in 2001. He was an active member of the Mobile County, AL, and National Education associations. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, golf and college football; collecting baseball cards; cooking; and caring for the family’s cats.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1958; his stepfather, Joseph F. Meek in 1999; grandparents, George and Lucille Fox, of Burke’s Garden and Mobile, and Lawrence and Mattie Martin of Hillsville; and his mother-in-law, Margaret Sirmon, in 2002.
Additional survivors: wife of 34 years, Dianne Sirmon Martin; sons, Paul (Nicole) Martin of Theodore, Michael Martin of Mobile; grandsons, Collin Martin and Chase Clark; brother, Stephen Martin of Mobile; sister, Carolyn Martin (Robert) Rand of Bethesda, MD; aunt, Helen Louise Fox (Joseph) Strong of Mobile; father-in-law, William Sirmon; brother-in-law, Wayne Sirmon (Maryella); and other loving family and friends.
The funeral was conducted July 19 at 2 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Mobile with Pastor William R. Funk, of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Interment was in Mobile Memorial Gardens.

Kerry E. McGlothlin
Kerry E. McGlothlin, 53, of Swords Creek, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 22, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was the son of the late Ernest (Cotton) McGlothlin and Doris Robinette McGlothlin of Swords Creek.
He was a United States Air Force Veteran and a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF & AM. He was co-owner of L & M Auto Parts of Swords Creek. He attended the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church and the Horton Ridge Church of God. He was a devoted husband, father, son and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ernie McGlothlin, and one sister, Nannie McGlothlin.
Survivors: wife, of 33 years, Connie Whitt McGlothlin; son, Kem McGlothlin, and former wife, Marlene, of Raven; daughter, Tina Keen, and husband, Brian, of Swords Creek; grandsons, Keith Keen, Kerry Keen, Kraig McGlothlin and Logan McGlothlin; brother, Mike McGlothlin of Swords Creek; sister, Melinda Holmes of Lebanon; special mother-in-law, sisters and brothers-in-law; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 25 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Brother Les Ritchie and Rev. Dennis White officiating.
Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
