Ervin A. Mitchell
Ervin A. Mitchell, 94, of Baptist Valley, died July 24, 2003 at his home following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Mack and Mary Catherine Baldwin Mitchell.
He was a retired carpenter. He attended the Assembly of God Church at Baptist Valley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Harmon Mitchell; one son, Ervin Milbern Mitchell; two brothers, George Mitchell and Isaac Mitchell; two sisters, Oakley Whitt and Pearl Harman; and several half brothers and sisters.
Survivors: sons, Joe Mitchell and wife, Barbara, and Powell Mitchell and wife, Carolyn, all of Baptist Valley; sister, Mae Beavers of Baptist Valley; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 27 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Barry Absher and Rev. Robert Whitt officiating.
Burial followed in the Hankins Family Cemetery at Baptist Valley.
Letha M. Oliver
Letha Mae Oliver, 61, of Taylorsville, NC, went to be with Jesus July 25, 2003 after a long battle with cancer.
She was born to John Clarence and Elsie Crouse Whitt in Tazewell.
She was a member of Taylorsville Church of God. She was employed by Southern Device for 18 years. She was a loving wife, sister, friend and admired by all who knew her. She was also an avid lover of bluegrass and gospel music.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Bonds, and one infant brother.
Survivors: husband, Claude Oliver of Taylorsville; sisters, twin sister, Faye Osborne and husband, Jim, of Taylorsville, Dorothy Neel and husband, Norman, of Tazewell; brothers, John Whitt and wife, Shirley, of Baltimore, MD, Frank Whitt and wife, Evelyn, Fred Whitt and wife, Edith, and Ron Whitt and wife, Peggy, all of Cedar Bluff, Bob Whitt and wife, Geraldine, of Lynchburg; special friends, her “bestest” friend, Faye Daniels, Mabel Gant, Clara Warren, Judy Elder and Dorothy Hall, all of Taylorsville; along with a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 27 at 2 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Kenneth Barnette and Rev. Kenneth Whisnant officiating.
Burial followed in Taylorsville City Cemetery.

Otto “Toby” Owens
Otto “Toby” Owens, 57, of Mavisdale, died July 27, 2003 at the Clinch Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Rufus and Crettie Deel Owens.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a retired coal miner.
Survivors: daughter, Vanessa Renae and husband, Joey Deskins, of St. Paul; son, Dallas Darnel Owens and wife, Lori, of Rock Hill, SC; sister, Nellie Pruner of Haysi; brothers, Gordon Owens of Richlands, Trinkle Deel of Route #1, Vansant; grandchildren, Heather Deel, Jonathan Deel, Benjamin Owens and Harrison Owens; and special friends, Greg, Brenda, Jessica and Adam Dotson and Bill, Julie, Amber and Ethan Sage.
The funeral will be conducted July 30 at 2 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Michael Trent officiating and singing by Leonard Meadows.
Burial will follow in the Owens Family Cemetery at Prater.
An evening service will be conducted July 29 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Clyde D. Puckett
Clyde Davis Puckett, 77, of Claypool Hill, died July 23, 2003 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Cleveland, he was a son of the late Lonnie L. and Ava Dye Puckett, both Tazewell County natives.
He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands and Claypool Hill area and was a retired employee of General Shale Corp.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Puckett, and three brothers, Charlie Puckett, Dewey Puckett, and Clarence Puckett.
Survivors: sisters, Ruth Puckett and Beulah Puckett, both of Claypool Hill; adopted brother, Junior Boyd of Claypool Hill; one niece; and several nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 26 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Darrell Sutherland and Rev. Charles Hubbard officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Blanche V. Rasnake
Blanche Virginia Rasnake, 83, of Bandy, died July 27, 2003 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Tazewell Co., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Quesenberry Burress.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and six sisters.
Survivors: husband of 60 years, Campbell Rasnake; daughters, Mrs. Jim (Lucille) Beavers, Ruth Beavers, and Mrs. Joel (Connie) Lester, all of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Eric (Terry) Newberry of Richlands; sons, Roy Rasnake and wife, Elizabeth, of Essington, PA, Buddy Rasnake and wife, Wanda, of Centerville; sister, Mrs. Gray Broughman of Naples, FL; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. July 29 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Gerald Stacy and Rev. David Brannock officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill.
Gladys E. Ratliff
Gladys Elizabeth Ratliff, 74, of the Garden Creek section of Buchanan County, died July 27, 2003 at her home following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Edd and Della Asbury Jewell.
She attended the Garden United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.B. Ratliff, and four brothers, Robert Jewell, Henry Jewell, Richard Jewell and Sherman Jewell.
Survivors: daughters, Melinda Blankenship and husband, Earnest, of Pounding Mill, Constance Ratliff of Oakwood, Patricia Keene and husband, Phillip, of Oakwood; granddaughters, Melissa Mullins and husband, Donnie, Jane Horton and husband, Franklin, Allyson Ramsey and husband, Jimmy, and Carrie Stiltner and husband, Chad; grandsons, Matthew Trivett and wife, Anna, and Michael Trivett; great-grandchildren, Hannah Ramsey, Sydney and Skyler Stiltner and Elliott Horton; and sisters, Stella Horn of Roanoke and Edith Horn of Grundy.

Daris “Will” Roberts
Daris “Will” Roberts, 47, of Meridian, MS, formerly of North Tazewell, died July 21, 2003 at his home.
Born at Welch, WV, he was a son of Herbert and Lorine Stacy Roberts of North Tazewell.
He was preceded him in death by one brother, Donnie Ray Roberts.
Additional survivors: sister, Diana Cole and husband, Larry, of Abingdon; brothers, Herbert Dale Roberts and wife, Brenda, of North Tazewell, Derrick Venson Roberts of Morgantown, WV; niece, Heather Brewster, of North Tazewell; nephews, Christopher Roberts of North Tazewell, Matthew Cole of Huntersville, NC; two great nieces; one great nephew; two special friends, Nancy Kissner and Matthew Liedtke, both of Meridian; and many other friends.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 25 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Roy Smith and the Rev. Marvin Kennedy officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road.

Lucy C. Thompson, 72, of Tazewell, died July 27, 2003 at her home.

William (Bill) White
William (Bill) Richard White, 78, of Bluefield, VA, died July 21, 2003 at his home.
Born in Harper, WV, he was a son of the late Barney White and Maude Williams White.
He was a truck driver most of his life working for Lemon Transport Co. and Superior Tank Co. before retirement 15 years ago. He was a member of the Retirees Chapter of the Teamsters Union #549 of Elizabethan, TN, and also served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during WWII.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Allen White.
Survivors: daughters, Judy Browning and husband, Jack, of Bluefield, VA, Joan Burkett and husband, Daryl, of Youngville, NC; grandsons, Jeff Browning and wife, Sara, of Roanoke, Jay Browning and wife, Deana, of Santa Claus, IN, Richard Burkett and wife, Jenny, of Madison, NC, Kristopher Burkett and wife, Debbie, of Wake Forest, NC; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Sydney and Matthew Burkett and Bailey Browning; sisters, Mazella Riner of Beckley, WV, June White, Rose White and Alma Bradley, all of Baltimore, MD, Mary Hope Billion of California, Edna O’Sullivan of New Hampshire; and brothers, Cecil Williams of Beckley, WV, and Jimmie White of Elyria, OH.
The funeral was conducted July 23 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA.
Burial followed in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor in Beckley at 1 p.m.
Clarence Andrew Mabe Nov. 1, 2002
Mr. Clarence Andrew Mabe, age 62, of Richlands, Virginia died Friday, November 1, 2002 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was a son of Mrs. Mary L. Jeter Mabe of Richlands, Virginia and the late Mr. Clarence William Mabe.
He was a retired Sgt. and disabled U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran also serving in the 101st and 81st Airborne. He was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 of Richlands, the Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter #31, the American Legion of Grundy, Virginia, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. He had made his home in the Richlands area his entire life and was of the Holiness Faith.

Funeral services for Mr. Clarence Anderew Mabe will be conducted Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 2:00PM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Charles Hubbard and Rev. Oakley McCoy officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 and Tazewell County Chapter #31 DAV will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call after 6:00PM Saturday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
