Mrs. Ida M. Burton, age 102, of Richlands, Virginia, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at a Tazewell,
Virginia hospital.
She was born January 1, 1900 in Pikeville, Kentucky and was a daughter of the late Sidney M. and Martha J. Kerley.
Mrs. Burton was one of the rare women to experience the most dynamic 100 years in our country’s history. She could recall with remarkable clarity the sinking of the Titanic, The Great War, the Roaring 20’s, the Great Depression, World War II, color television, Elvis in the 50’s, the turbulent 60’s, the first man on the moon, Richard Nixon, the end of the Vietnam War in the 70’s, Ronald Reagan, the Space Shuttle in the 80’s, the prosperous 90’s, and the Millennium celebration in 2000.
As one of her favorite hobbies, Mrs. Burton loved crocheting and quilting. Her family and friends have been the lucky recipients of many of her wonderful blankets over the years. Most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends at her home in Richlands where she lived for 84 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Mr. John D. Burton, an infant son, James, daughter, Hazel, two sons, John and Bill, three brothers, and one sister.

1 Daughter-In-Law, Mrs. Elizabeth Burton of Palm City, Florida
8 Grandchildren:
Sedora Jane Brown, Barbara Anne Hall, Sara (Sally) Burton, Julie Burton-Sharrard, Terry Cox, Tom Gisi, Susan Hall, and Andrea Cosper.
8 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great Grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ida M. Burton will be conducted Saturday, November 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Donald McClure, the Pastor of the Ridgeview Baptist Church at Stuarts Draft, Virginia officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Don Vandyke, Claude Barrett, Clyde Barrett, Louis Hunter, Dr. Tommy Bays, and Joe McGlothlin. Mrs. Annie M. Lowe, age 83, of Clovis, New Mexico, formerly of Bandy, Virginia, passed away November 14, 2002 in New Mexico following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Tazewell County and was the daughter of the late Riley and Rosa Strouth Smith, both Tazewell County natives.
She had made her home in the Bandy, Virginia area most of her life prior to moving to New Mexico in 1993. She was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie “Bill” Lowe; one son, Dale Lowe; and two brothers.

Mr. Jerry Wayne “Sambo” McCall, age 47, of Claypool Hill, Virginia, passed away November 18, 2002 in a Cary, North Carolina hospital following a strong battle with a lengthy illness.
He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of the late Frazier and Mary Bentley McCall, both Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home in the Jewell Valley, Virginia area most of his life and was a former employee of N&V Coal Co. of Whitewood, Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Brian McCall.

Mrs. Rosie Juanita Meade, age 76, of Raven, Virginia, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2002 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Russell County and was the daughter of the late Lacy and Carrie Shannon Kiser, both Russell County natives.
She had made her home in the Raven, Virginia area most of her life and was of the Pentacostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary McCowan.

Mr. Junior B. Osborne, age 70, of Jewell Ridge, Virginia, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2002, in a Salem, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of Mrs. Sarah Blackburn Osborne of Jewell Ridge, Virginia and the late Roy Osborne.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Mr. Byron E. “Pete” Price, age 84, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2002 at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn., following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of the late Olga A. and Lou N. Clark Price, both Russell County natives.
He made his home in the Tazewell County area most of his life and was a retired painter. He was a U.S. Army Air Force World War II Veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Kitts Price, one sister, Lena Amato and one brother, Roger W. Price.

Mrs. Opal Irene Reedy, age 74, of 7731 West Lee Hwy. Rural Retreat, Virginia died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at a Wytheville, Virginia hospital following an illness of several months.
She was born in Buchanan County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Rosie Webb Osborne, both Buchanan County natives. She had made her home in Maryland for 24 years moving to Rural Retreat 14 years ago and was of the Holiness Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Perry Osborne.

Mrs. Mattie Mae Absher Stilwell, age 90, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland following a brief illness.
She was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Charles Alden and Rena Chambers Absher, both Tazewell County Natives.
She had made her home in the Raven and Steelesburg area all of her life and was a member of the Fork Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charlie W. Stilwell, one daughter, Mrs. Anne Robinson, two son-in-laws, Mr. Jack Smith and Mr. Ralph Robinson, one sister Mrs. Artie Alifair Absher Keen and three brothers, Mr. Dewey Absher, Mr. Lloyd Absher and Mr. Roy Absher.

Mr. Rex Eugene Sparks, age 71, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, Virginia died Wednesday, April 9th, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Springville, Virginia and was a son of the late Gideon and Mellissa Smith Sparks, both Baptist Valley natives. He was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was owner and operator of Sparks Produce since 1956 retiring in 2000. He attended the Baptist Valley Assembly of God Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Zachary Sparks, four sisters, and three brothers.

She was born in West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Bob and Patricia Ann McCoy Underwood Simmons.
She had made her home in the Alderson, West Virginia area most of her life and was a homemaker.
