Mr. Jimmy Allen Hess, age 55, of 801 East First St. Richlands, Virginia died Saturday, March 8th, 2003 at a Bristol, Tennessee hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was a son of the late Clarence and Ola Blankenship Hess. He was a disabled electrician with Pittston Coal Company having worked from 1974 to 1993 and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1760 of Seaboard, Virginia. He was a life long resident of the Richlands area and was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Mrs. Saley Stilwell Fairbrother, age 76, of 2249 Valley Pike Lot 34 Dayton, Ohio formerly of Raven, Virginia, died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at her home following a brief illness.
She was born in Raven, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee “Jim” and Laura Turner Newberry, both Russell County natives. She had made her home in the Raven area most of her life before moving to Dayton nine years ago and was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Mr. Elyhew Stilwell, two sisters, Rosa Richardson and Arlene Newberry; also three brothers, Jay, Andrew, and Ruey Newberry.

Jessie D. "JD" Harrison, Mar. 6, 2003
Mr. Jessie David “J. D.” Harrison, Sr., age 68, of 310 Virginia Ave. Richlands, Virginia died Thursday, March 6th, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Bandy, Virginia and was a son of the late James E. and Mary M. Harrison, both Tazewell County natives. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in death by his brother, Vernon Harrison, his sister, Lillian Harrison, one niece and nephew.
J. D. was an elder and active member in the Richlands Presbyterian Church and held the offices of Secretary of Sunday School, Secretary of the Men of the Church, member of the Education Committee, member of the Personnel Committee, and other capacities. J. D. graduated in the Class of 1952 from Richlands High School. He began working at Norma Coal Mining Company at Seaboard, Va. after attending McLean Business College in Bluefield, Va. He spent his life in the mining industry where he developed many long lasting and close friendships. The second half of his career was as a mine inspector with the Federal Mine Safety & Health Administration, where he had many successes and achievements. J. D.’s greatest accomplishments though are the love and devotion he gave to his family and friends. J. D. was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

Mr. James Franklin Gibson, age 63, of the Smith Ridge section of Jewell Ridge, Virginia, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2003 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Whitewood,, Virginia and was the son of the late George and Myrtle Burke Gibson, both Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home in the Jewell Ridge area most of his life and was a disabled miner with the William Harris Coal Co, and was a member of the UMWA. He attended the Church of God on Smith Ridge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children Jeffery and Julie Gibson, and one brother and sister.

Mr. Michael Daniel Smith, age 37, of the Red Root Ridge section of Raven, Virginia died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia hospital.
He was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was a son of the late Darius and Josie Cordle Smith, both Tazewell County natives. Mr. Smith had made his home in the Raven area his entire life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Timmy and Billy Smith.

Mr. Jerry Ray Vandyke, age 52, of Check, Virginia, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Buchanan County, Virginia and was the son of the late William Jake and Pinkie Arizona Vandyke, both Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home in the Buchanan County area all of his life and was a former construction worker. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eulis Vandyke.

Mr. Wert Powers, age 83, of 1020 Indian Creek Road Cedar Bluff, Virginia died Friday, February 21, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia.
He was born in Praise, Kentucky and was a son of the late Ira and Dosia Potter Powers, both Virginia natives. He was a retired miner with the Pocahontas Fuel Corp. at Amonate, Virginia and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 2322 of Amonate. He was a 1939 Graduate of Haysi High School, was a World War II U. S. Army Veteran serving in Northern France and was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 of Richlands. He was a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 A.F. & A.M ., the Kazim Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies of Roanoke, Virginia, and the Tazewell-Russell Shrine Club. He was a life long resident of the Richlands and Cedar Bluff areas and was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church and West Fork Chapel.

She was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Mack and Mary Catherine Baldwin Mitchell, both Tazewell County natives. She was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ at Tazewell, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Grover “Earl” Whitt, one daughter, Mary Caroline Owens, one sister, Pearl Harman, and two brothers, George Mitchell and Isaac Mitchell.

She was born in Statesville, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late James Arthur and Margie Ruth Campbell Bradley, both North Carolina natives.
She had made her home in the Statesville, North Carolina most of her life prior to moving to the Richlands, Virginia area in 1995. She was former Certified Nursing Assistant and was a member of the Redemption Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina and also attended the Zion Tabernacle in Cedar Bluff, Virginia.

Mr. Pat Jennings Boyd, age 47, of Princeton, West Virginia died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at a Bluefield, West Virginia hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was a son of Mrs. Lucy Ellen Whited Boyd of Memphis, Tennessee and the late Graham T. Boyd. He had made his home in the Raven area most of his life. He was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company Buchanan # 5 Mines of Oakwood Virginia. He was a graduate of Honaker High School Class of 1973 and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. He was a member of the Oniska Tribe #61 of Richlands, Virginia and a member of the UMWA.
He was preceded in death by his half sister Mary Reynolds and his half brother Peary Boyd.

He was a life long resident of the Whitewood area and was a retired employee of Norfolk and Western Railroad. He was a World War II U. S. Army Veteran and was a member of the John Ratliff American Legion Post in Grundy, Virginia. He was also a member of the Baptist Bible Church in Whitewood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Harold, Bernard, and Robert Maxwell; also, a daughter-in-law, Joan Maxwell.
