Ms. Betty Gean Windsor, age 61, of the Edgewater Drive section of Cedar Bluff, Virginia died Saturday, May 24, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Clarence J. and Hazel Irene Arnold Keene, both Tazewell County natives. She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area the past 20 years and was a member of the Raven Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was also a member of the Appalachian Agency of Senior Citizens and the Richlands Ark House. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Brooks and Billy Lee Flake, also, one sister, Jacqulene Burnette.

Mr. Graham Paul “Shorty” “Valley Boy” Boyd, age 67, of the Pea Patch section of Jewell Ridge, Virginia died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Russell County, Virginia and was a son of Mrs. Lucy Ellen Whited Boyd of Memphis, Tennessee and the late Mr. Graham Tolbert Boyd. He was a retired coal miner for Pittston Coal Company at Seaboard, Virginia and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1760. He was a lifelong resident of the Jewell Ridge area and was a member of the Bearwallow Bible Church. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Gary Boyd, one brother, Pat Boyd, half-sister, Mary Reynolds, and half brother, Perry Boyd.

Mrs. Alverta Jane Largen of 108 Second Street Richlands, Virginia died Wednesday, May 14th, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia hospital following an illness of several weeks.
She was born in War, West Virginia and was a daughter of the late James H. and Grace E. Meadows Mullins, Sr., both Richlands natives. She was a 1943 Graduate of Big Creek High School and attended Business College. She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was a member of the Richlands First United Methodist Church.. She was a former secretary for Celanese Corp. at Narrows, Virginia and West Virginia University, a former medical secretary at Clinch Valley Clinic, and a former radio station manager of WRIC in Richlands. She was a member of the Richlands Garden Club serving as secretary for seven years, the Tazewell County Country Club serving as secretary and treasurer of the Ladies Golf Association, and was also a member of the Richlands Junior Womens Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. William M. Largen and one brother, James H. Mullens, Jr.

Mrs. Erie Edna Hartnog, age 77 of tazewell, VA, died Monday, May 12, 2003 at her home following a brief illness.
She was born in Tazewell County, VA and was a daughter of the late Jeff and Laura Frances Wheeler Smith.
Mrs. Hartnog had made her home in Tazewell since 1992, She was a loving housewife. A story about Edna is featured in a book, on the art of Making Lying Soap. The book is titles " Mountain Hands a Portrait of Southern Appalachia" written by Sam Venableand photos by Paul Efird. She was recently notified that the book will bo on display at a museum in Knoxville, TN.
In addition to her parents shw was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Reva Elswick and Carol Shrader and 2 brothers, B.H. (Buck) Smith and Robert J. Smith.

Mrs. Rebecca P. Bandy, age 84 of Cedar Bluff, Virginia died Wednesday April 30, 2003 at a Tazewell, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Gary, West Virginia and was a daughter of the late George W. and Elizabeth Brewster Payne of Tazewell County Virginia. She was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was of the Free Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Mack (Glass) Bandy and her stepmother Mrs. Bertha Payne.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth VanDyke age 84 of Lenoir, North Carolina, formerly of Richlands, Virginia died Tuesday April 29, 2003 at a Lenoir North Carolina Health Care Center, following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Tazewell County daughter of the late James Oscar and Mattie Mitchell, of Tazewell, Virginia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Loving husband Charles M. VanDyke, one sister Guineline Mitchell and one brother Garland Mitchell. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a former member of the Richlands Order of Eastern Star Chapter # 104. She was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church, and had lived in the Richlands area most of her life, until the last four years which she had spent in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth VanDyke will be conducted Friday at 2:00 pm at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Virginia with Rev. Bill McDaniel officiating. Friends may call at the Mausoleum after 1:00 pm on Friday for a visitation before the service. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be: Greg VanDyke, Kelly VanDyke, Danny Burress, Tim Lail, Steven Brewer and Bernie Smith.

Ms. Kimberly Denise Stevens, age 34, of Jewell Ridge, Virginia died Wednesday, April 16th, 2003 at a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Richlands, Virginia and was a daughter of Mrs. Linda Keen Hess and Joseph Dale Hess of Cedar Bluff, Virginia. She was a 1987 graduate of Richlands High School and was a former home care nursing assistant. She was a life long resident of the Jewell Ridge area and was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.

Miss Julia Michelle Sparks, age 21, of Dungannon, Virginia formerly of Jewell Ridge, Virginia died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at a Lebanon, Virginia hospital from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident near Dungannon.
She was born in Richlands, Virginia and was a daughter of Jeffery and Patricia Gibson Sparks of Bandy, Virginia. She had made her home in the Jewell Ridge area most of her life before moving to Dungannon three years ago , was a 1999 Richlands High School Graduate and attended Southwest Virginia Community College.

He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Tom and Lillie Gilbert, both Tazewell County natives. He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff area most of her life and was a self-employed farmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Crystal Gail Gilbert and five brothers, Lawrence, Alden, Lonnie, Eugene, and Ellis Gilbert.

Mr. Fred Garland Hawkins, age 78, of 51 Huxley Place Newport News, Virginia formerly of Raven, Virginia died Thursday, July 10th, 2003 at a Newport News, Virginia hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Raven, Virginia and was a son of the late James M. and Maggie Reedy Hawkins, both Tazewell County natives. He had made his home in the Newport News area the past 50 years and was a retired employee of New Port News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company. He was a World War II U. S. Navy Veteran and was of the Methodist Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mrs. Artie Alifair Absher Keen, age 83 of Tazewell, Virginia, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness..
She was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Charles and Rena Chambers Absher, both Tazewell County, Virginia natives.
She was a life long resident of the Tazewell County area and was a former bookkeeper for several independent coal operators and was among the first postmistresses to serve in Tazewell County, Virginia. She was a life long member of the Richlands Tabernacle and was a very loving friend to her family and community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Albert T. Keen and three brothers, Dewey, Roy, and Lloyd Absher.
