George W. Griffis
George Warren Griffis, 77, of Stafford, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Woodmont Center.
He worked for Turner Construction. He belonged to Ebenezer United Methodist Church and was a member of Bricklayers, Masons Helpers & Building Laborers Local No. 74. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of three Bronze Stars.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Gaynelle Griffis; one daughter, Barbara G. Decatur of Stafford; one son, Raymond W. Griffis of Stafford; one sister, Ellen G. Myers of Spotsylvania; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Mullins & Thompson Stafford Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Shockey officiating.

Ava Lee
Ava Lee, 76, of Woodbridge, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001 at her home.
Born in Shelby, N.C., she lived in Prince William County for 57 years.
Preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lee, and one grandson, Steven, she is survived by one daughter, Gail Brown of Point Harbor, N.C.; three sons, Charles R. Lee of Triangle, Richard A. Lee and Clyde Michael Lee, both of Woodbridge; one sister, Betty Hoyle of Cherryville, N.C.; three brothers, Ralph Lail of Melbourne, Fla., Gene Lail of Maurice, La., and Lamar Lail of Opelousas, La.; five grandsons, two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow at Stafford Memorial Park.

Jorge L. Martinez Sr.
Jorge Luis Martinez Sr., 46, of Manassas, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church.
He enjoyed baseball and boxing.
Survivors include his wife, Debbie D. Martinez; three children, Jorge Martinez Jr., Kenia Martinez and Francisco Martinez, all of Manassas; his father, Luis Martinez of Manassas; his mother, Maria Alarcon of Costa Rica; one brother, Carlos Costillo of Costa Rica; and two sisters, Isabel Martinez of Costa Rica and Maria Vargas of Manassas.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where a home-going service will be held 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. C. A. Lundy officiating. Entombment will take place at San Jose, Costa Rica, at a later date.

Pearl E. Camp
Pearl Estelle Jenkins Camp, 91, formerly of Manassas, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Elder Care in Rocky Mount.
She loved to sing and play the guitar and piano.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Camp; her son, Robert Jenkins; her sister, Bessie Davis; and her brother, Lester Cornell.
She is survived by her children, Mary Jenkins Hoffman of Edinburg, John Jenkins of Vienna, William Russell Jenkins of Richmond, Lawrence Jenkins of Gainesville, Clarence Jenkins of Oakton and Shirley Jenkins Bebout of Delaware; one sister, Daisy Napier of Manassas; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Robert J. Cutting
Robert James Cutting, 90, of Gainesville, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Northern Virginia Hospice Center.
He was a 52-year member of the American Legion of Philadelphia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean E. Cutting.
He is survived by his children, Judith Stark and Robert A. Cutting; three brothers, Donald Cutting, Clark Cutting and Frederic Cutting; two sisters, Carolyn Cutting and Priscilla Cutting; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ellis J. Lamont
Ellis Joe Lamont of Dumfries died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond.
He was a resident of Prince William County since 1970. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 28 in Triangle and the Disabled American Veterans in Dumfries.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Mae Lamont; his mother, Jackie Lamont of Idaho; two daughters, Helen Brewer-Irons of Manassas and Kimberly Lamont of California; two sons, James Habina of Triangle and John Habina of Dumfries; a brother, John Lamont of Connecticut; a sister, Sandra Murphrey of Idaho; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 18825 Fuller Heights Road, Triangle. Interment will follow at Dumfries Cemetery.

Linda G. Mitchell
Linda Gail Goodall Mitchell, 74, of Manassas, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Annaburg Manor in Manassas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Mitchell, in 1975.
She is survived by her children, Mary Denise Keene of Centreville, Michael Mitchell of Sterling and William Mitchell of Falls Church; her brother, James Goodall of Springfield; and three grandchildren.

Kimberly Posey
Kimberly Posey, 43, of Manassas, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Marshall Manor in Marshall.
She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Manassas. She was a 1974 graduate of Osbourn High School, Manassas, and a 1982 graduate of George Washington University. She was presently teaching special education at Osbourn High. She was very active in MASA Soccer League and served as a commissioner. She loved to collect antiques and had led a Mom's In Touch at Emmanuel Christian School.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Posey and Laura Posey, both of the home; her parents, Bob and Mickey Robertson of Manassas; one sister, Kari Robertson of Dumfries; and two stepsons, Brandon Posey of Woodbridge and David Posey of Burke.

George I. Schlegel Sr.
George Irvin Schlegel Sr., 88, of Dumfries, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, of heart failure.
He was a longtime resident of Dumfries. He was a member of Triangle Baptist Church. He had served for four years with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1930 to 1934.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Gladys C. Schlegel; and a son, Harry Benton Schlegel.
He is survived by five sons, William Schlegel of Cahokia, Ill., George Schlegel Jr. of Triangle, Stanley Schlegel of Dumfries, Bruce Schlegel of Stafford and Robert Schlegel of Bristow; four daughters, Barbara Ruths of Triangle, Rose Marie Webb of Dumfries, Jo Anne Ramage of Dumfries and Claralynn Weisbrod of Woodbridge; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Triangle Baptist Church, 4345 Inn St., Triangle, where a celebration of George Schlegel's life will be held at 1:15 p.m., the Rev. Mark Byrd officiating. A graveside service will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, with military honors.

Richard V. Sowers Jr., 74, of Manassas, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at his home.
He was with the Local 891 of the Cement Mason Union.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol E. Sowers; his son, Wayne R. Sowers; and his parents, Vincent Sowers and Eve Sowers.
He is survived by one brother, Ronald Sowers of Heathsville; and two sisters, Lois Buckspan of North Carolina and Marion O'Brien of Manassas.
Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Bette B. Tonkin
Bette Blair Tonkin, 78, of Manassas, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Northern Virginia Community Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Thurmond, W.Va., the daughter of the late Harry R. and Goldie Blair Draper. A homemaker, she was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold B. "Red" Tonkin; and two brothers, Harry R, Draper Jr. and Samuel F. Draper.
She is survived by two daughters, Martha E. Tonkin and Melissa A. Tonkin, both of Manassas; a sister-in-law, Johnnie Nell Draper of Swarthmore, Pa.; an honorary daughter, Mary L. Stracke of Rockville, Md.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lee Funeral Home, 8521 Sudley Road, Manassas. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle.

Leroy Alton Washington, 69, of Alexandria, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Alexandria Hospital.
He is survived by one son, Gordon Earl of Fairfax; five daughters, Veronica Earl of Manassas, Geraldine Moten of Fairfax, Margaret Green of Culpeper, LaVette Washington of Fairfax and Gwendolyn Sistrunk of Oxon Hill, Md.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Diamond of Falls Church; one aunt; and many other relatives and friends.

Florence Williams
Florence "Virginia" Williams, 90, of Manassas, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Annaburg Manor, Manassas.
She was a member of Manassas/St. Thomas United Methodist Church and a charter member of Eastern Star Federal Chapter 38 of Washington, D.C. She was a graduate of Eastern High School in Washing-ton, D.C., and retired from the Pentagon after 30 years of service with the federal government.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Alfred Williams, who died in 1985.
Survivors include two daughters, June V. Mancone of Buffalo, N.Y., and Doris M. Hallett of Manassas; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Col. Arthur T. Surkamp
Col. Arthur Thurston Surkamp, 79, resident of Middleburg, died Oct. 17, 2001, after a heart attack.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean Heard Surkamp.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Surkamp; his children, Susan S. Anderson of Boston, James T. Surkamp of Shephardstown, W.Va.,a nd Arthur T. Surkamp Jr. of Manassas; his stepchildren, Lydna B. McCann of Gray, Maine, Robin B. Rowe of Hartford, Conn., Elizabeth B. Hume, Lower Heidelberg, Pa., one sister, Ann Hogan of Indian River Colony, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. on Thursday.
Betty M. Clay
Betty Martin Clay, 74, of Woodbridge died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001,at Potomac Hospital.
She had been a resident of Prince William County since 1962, a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Dale City and the AARP. She retired after 20 years of service as an executive secretary for the U.S. Air Force.
Preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Clay, she is survived by two daughters, Karen E. Collins of Woodbridge and Robin M. Bishop of Newport News; one son, Gary L. Clay of Dumfries; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
