James L. Cooke
James L. Cooke, 87, of Nokesville, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton.
He was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church in Nokesville, past president of the Builders Association of Northern Virginia, a charter member since 1969 of the Prince William Historical Commission, and a member of the Nokesville Ruritan Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie W. Cooke.
He is survived by five cousins, Edna Lee Armstrong and Winfield Ross, both of Nokesville, Billy Ross of Florida, and Forrest Ross and Mary Kay Fitzgerald, both of Syria.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday at Oakdale Baptist Church, 9532 Auburn Road, Nokesville, Dr. Bill Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Walter B. Herbert Jr.
Walter Burt Herbert Jr., 74, of Manassas, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at his home.
He was a retired Army engineer veteran with 25 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Beavers Herbert, and one sister, Jane Armstrong.
He is survived by two sisters, Betty Hodge of Conklin, N.Y., and Jean Hyson of Ohio; three brothers, Lewis, William and David Herbert, all of Pennsylvania; and one niece, Betty Jean Eller of Manassas.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment with military honors will follow at Woodbine Baptist Church Cemetery.
J. Marguerite Stone
J. Marguerite Stone, 78, of St. Albans, N.Y., died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mattie Carter, and one brother, Richard Carter.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Peek of Roosevelt, N.Y.; a son, Raymond Stone of Manassas; a sister, Josephine C. Stewart of Manassas; a brother, Lee Carter of Tacoma, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, where services will be held at 11 a.m., the Rev. Morris Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery, Remington.
Christopher Thompson
Christopher "Chris" Albert Brown Thompson, 27, of Woodbridge, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001.
He was born at Potomac Hospital in 1974 and attended schools throughout Virginia and North Carolina. He was employed in the fast-food industry.
He was preceded in death by his brother, "Pee Wee" James Craig Brown, and his grandparents, Slade and Wilma Watkins.
He is survived by one daughter, Ayanna De'Simone Thompson, and one son, Trisiih Keith Thompson, both of Rockingham, N.C.; his mother, Mary Frances Brown Thompson of Callao; his father, Eugene Watkins of Norwood, N.C.; two sisters, Diana Brown of Suitland, Md., and Wilma Brown Owens of Norwood; three brothers, Rick Owens of Badin, N.C., and Eugene and Lloyd Brown, both of Woodbridge; and his maternal grandmother, Blanche Brown of Alexandria.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge. Burial will be private.
Kathleen E. Amidon
Kathleen E. "Kay" Amidon died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Amidon; a brother, Phil Carter; and two sisters, Ruth Carter and Margie Bunyea. She is survived by one son, Doug Amidon; four sisters, Eleanor Sohr, Ginny Logan, Shirley Lombardo and Marion Rogers; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodbridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Robert T. Fagely
Robert Thomas Fagely, 81, of Manassas, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Hospice of Northern Virginia in Arlington.
He was born March 18, 1920, in Philadelphia, son of the late Amos and Ida Hess Fagely. He was a member of St. Alban-Swain Lodge No. 529 A.F. & A.M. and the American Legion Post No. 959 in Philadelphia.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Violet M. Fagely; two daughters, Vicky Masturzo and Barbara A. Waterman, both of Manassas; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. today at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where a funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m., the Rev. Robert S. Brookover III officiating. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle.

Joseph L. Ford
Joseph Lee Ford, 64, of Fairfax, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara B. Ford of Fairfax; two brothers, James Ford and William Ford, both of Chantilly; and three sisters, Irene Whitney of Arlington, Martha Burr of Richmond and Marion Hay of Augusta, Ga.
A funeral was conducted at noon Monday at First Baptist Church, 4359 Fauquier Ave., The Plains. Interment was held at First Baptist Church Cemetery, The Plains.

Herbert Garland
Herbert Garland, 65, of Unicoi, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001.
He was a resident of Dale City for 20 years and retired from Mt. Vernon Plumbing.
Survivors include his children, H. Douglas Garland of Taylors, S.C., Donald Garland of Hayes, Johnny P. Garland, formerly of Dale City, and Janet Garland Pendergraph of Occoquan; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Freda M. Jenkins
Freda Mae Jenkins, 59, of Stafford, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by three sons, Bruce E. Jenkins Jr. of Alexandria, and Mark L. Jenkins and George A. Jenkins, both of Stafford; three daughters, Gorga Hansborough and Freda Mullins, both of Stafford, and Judy Smith of Spotsylvania; one sister, Lynis McGwin of Stafford; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Sickel Manns, 82, of Markham, formerly of Manassas, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her home.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John V. Sickel; and her daughter, Ruth S. Swart.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Lee Manns; one son, Jan V. Sickel of Markham; one sister, Ruth Mahoney of Manassas; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edith Virginia Williamson Monk, 67, of Triangle, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late James Sanford Williamson and Margaret Virginia Gibson Williamson, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lee "Johnny" Monk.
She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Lynn Monk Bartley of Triangle and Lisa Ellen Monk Butler of Stafford; five sons, Ronald Allen Monk, Timothy Albert Monk and Mark Anthony Monk, all of Stafford, James Russell Monk of Fredericksburg and Richard Keith Monk of Oxford, Miss.; one sister, Alice May Roles of Stafford; one brother, George Howard Williamson of Great Falls, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Frederick Alexander Sr.
Survivors include her mother, Angela Payne, and her father, Frederick Alexander Jr., both of Stafford; three sisters, Celeste Payne and Shannon Willis, both of Stafford, and Michele Payne of Fairfax; and her grandparents, Helen J. Payne of Woodbridge, Harold Payne of Alexandria and Mamie Alexander of Centreville.

Marie Theresa Scotto, 36, of Lake Ridge, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Hospice of Northern Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Carleo.
Survivors include her husband, John Scotto; her father, Anthony Carleo of Stuart, Fla.; two daughters, Catherine and Christina Scotto, both of Lake Ridge; two sons, Christopher and James Scotto, both of Lake Ridge; and two brothers, Anthony Carleo of New York and James Carleo of Pennsylvania.

Burney Shapiro, 84, of Stafford, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Petersburg. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran and a retired extension clerk at Kmart. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 290, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3103 and former Bronze leader with the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Shapiro.
He is survived by one son, Ira J. Shapiro of High Point, N.C.; one daughter, Anita M. Stonehill of Stafford; four grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Whitehill of New Jersey.
