GAY B. EDWARDS
Ellen Gay Belcher Edwards, 90, of Meadows of Dan, died Monday, September 30, 2002, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Floyd County on July 28, 1912 to the late Benjamin Harrison Belcher and the late Mannie Conner Belcher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Avery J. Edwards; four brothers, Barley Belcher, Thomas Belcher, Daniel Belcher and Ray Belcher; and a grandchild, Franklin Wayne Edwards.
She had been a member of Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church for over 75 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Edwards of Stuart; two sons, Franklin D. Edwards of Henry and Donald Edwards of Woolwine; four sisters, Minnie Harmon of Willis, Monie Lovins of Christiansburg, Pauline Bolt of Meadows of Dan and Lula Harris of Radford; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church. Pastor Brian Childress and Rev. J.C. Willard will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
CHERIE L. HAIRSTON
Cherie Anuta Lynch Hairston, age 69, of McLean, died Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at her home.
She was born January 20, 1933, in Louisville, Ky., and was a daughter of the late Irwin Clay Lynch and Irene Lundac Lynch.
She attended San Diego State College and graduated in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught elementary school in San Diego, Ashia Air Force Base in Japan, Hargrave Military Academy and in Danville.
She earned a master's degree in education at Southwestern Louisiana State University and in 1982, she earned a master's degree in counseling from George Mason University.
While living in China she was a counselor at Taipei American School. She was a parish assistant at St. Thomas Episcopal Church for several years and later worked for Fairfax County. Until her retirement in 1995, she was in charge of the county's program to rehabilitate men who abused their spouses. She also served as president of the Navy Judge Advocate Generals' Wives Club.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas F. Hairston of McLean and formerly of Patrick County; one son, Gregory A. Hairston of Reston, Va.; one daughter, Susan H. Bowyer of Sarasota, Fla., one brother, Irwin G. Lynch of Ormand Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 8991 Brook Rd., McLean. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery.

LUTHER L. HALL
Luther Lee Hall, 85, of Old Mill Rd., Patrick Springs, died Monday, September 30, 2002, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on October 9, 1916 to the late Wallace O. and Kitty Cruise Hall. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Hall and Benjamin Hall.
He was retired from the Department of the Interior with over 37 years of service in supervision. After retiring he worked as a heavy equipment operator for J.C. Joyce Trucking and Paving Company.
Hall was a member of Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church in Meadows of Dan. He was a lifetime member of Golden Age Passport and Model "A" Restorers Club.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Irma Hall of the home; one daughter, Jewell Tolbert of Meadows of Dan; two sons, Dale Hall of Burnt Chimney and E. Arnold Hall of Martinsville; four stepsons, Gary Cannella of Lexington, Ky., Douglas S. Cannella of Pelham, N.H., Michael J. Cannella of Manchester, N.H., and Wayne R. Cannella of North Andover, Mass.; one sister, Christine H. Conner of Stuart; one brother, Coy Hall of Ridgeway; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Howell Funeral Home chapel in Stuart by the Revs. Jack Foley, Alton Griffin and Bryan Childress. Burial will be in Providence Community Cemetery.

JOHN HODGES JR.
John Milton Hodges Jr., 58, of Bassett, died Sunday, September 29, 2002, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg.
He was born in Henry County on November 17, 1943.
He was the owner and operator of Air Comfort Heating & Cooling for 24 years.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Odell Hodges of Bassett; two sons, Mark R. Hodges of Patrick Springs and Christopher W. Hodges of Stuart; his guardian parents, Beaman and Ethel Hodges of Bassett; one sister, Elsie Burgart of Stuart; one brother, David Hodges of Martinsville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services chapel by the Rev. Sammy Caldwell. Burial will be in County Line Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery in Patrick County.
RACHEL H. OWENS
Rachel Holt Owens, 78, formerly of Rt. 3, Stuart, died Saturday, September 28, 2002, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on October 30, 1923, and was a daughter of the late Sherman G. and Susie Inman Holt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Elyard Owens.
She was retired from United Elastic Corp. and was a member of State Line Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Nelson of Lawsonville, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Linda Wills of Denver, N.C., and Gracie Woods of Mayodan, N.C.; two stepsons, Berkley Owens of Stuart and Bill Martin of Rocky Mount; four half-sisters, Adelene Adkins of Lawsonville, Mable Woods of Sandy Ridge, N.C., Lois Overby and Mildred Overby, both of Westfield, N.C.; one brother, Haywood Holt of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; 13 stepgrandchildren; 21 stepgreat-grandchildren and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at State Line Primitive Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

ELNER C. PENDLETON
Annie Elner Craig Pendleton, 99, of Stuart, died Thursday, September 26, 2002, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County on December 13, 1902 and was a daughter of the late William J. "Billy" Craig and the late Mintie Adeline Howell Craig. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Aaron Pendleton; a great-grandson, J.D. Phillips; and three brothers, Ewell Craig, Tommy Craig and Edmun Craig.
She was a member of Dobyns Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Monnie Hughes Burgess of Galax, Wilda P. Vipperman of Stuart, Thelma P. Cardwell of Mayodan, N.C., and Janice P. Newman of Orange City, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Elders Donnie Conner and Edward Bowman officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

WALTER E. SPENCER
Walter Efford (W.E.) Spencer, 102, of Bassett, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born on October 27, 1899 in Patrick County and was a son of the late William Pinkney Spencer and Martha Ingram Spencer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Joyce Spencer; three sons, John Howard Spencer, Ralph Pinkney Spencer and Rudolph (Rudy) Spencer; five sisters; five brothers and a great-grandson, Robert Michael France.
He was a retired paving contractor.
Surviving are four daughters, DeLavinia Spencer Covington of Spencer, Nancy Spencer Grant of Bassett and Abingdon, Rachel Spencer Cheatwood of North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Jane Spencer Shumate of Bassett; three sons, James Paul Spencer of Corpus Christi, Tex., Wayne Efford Spencer of Taft, Tex., and Frank Dwight Spencer of Bassett; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Saturday at the Spencer family cemetery in Patrick County. The Rev. Charles Wickham officiated.
Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Services in Bassett.
OCIE A. BARNES
Ocie Adams Barnes, 92, formerly of Martinsville, died Monday, November 18, 2002, at Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee, Fla.
She was born December 13, 1909 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late James and Nora Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hansford Eldren Barnes.
She was a member of Rich Acres Christian Church.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. The Rev. Tim Hunt officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

BARBARA P. HUNSUCKER
Barbara Jean Parsley Hunsucker, 54, of Chatham, died Friday, November 22, 2002, at her home.
She was born in Olney Montgomery, Mass., on September 15, 1948 and was a daughter of the late Ernest Thomas Parsley and the late June Marie Harding.
She was a cook at the Country Diner in Stuart for seven years.
Surviving are three daughters, Shonda E. Newberry and April E. Elvington, both of Stuart, and Dawn E. Pennington of Chatham; one son, Lawney J. Eckrote Jr. of Martinsville; one sister, Kelly Brumback of Hampton; two brothers, Steve White of Maryland and Thomas "Jeff" White Jr. of Florida; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Sunday at the home of April Elvington in Patrick Springs.
RONALD W. MARTIN
Ronald Wayne (Ronnie) Martin, 52, of Kelly Mill Road, Stuart, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem.
He was born in Patrick County on March 5, 1950 and was a son of Henry Otis and Lorene Griffin Martin of Stuart. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lester and Serberian Griffin, and his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Fannie Martin.
He graduated from Hardin Reynolds Memorial School and Danville Community College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict and attended Nettle Ridge United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member and past commander of VFW Post 7800.
He was employed for 30 years as a parts and service manager by Twin Ford, Riddle Olds-Cadillac, Blue Ridge Pontiac, GR Chevrolet and Martinsville Nissan, and most recently as assistant manager at Advance Auto in Collinsville.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Donna Gillispie Martin of the home; two daughters, Lindsey Clark Martin and Leslie Griffin Martin, both of the home; one stepdaughter, Katie Puckett of the home; two stepsons, Brian Puckett and Tyler Puckett, both of Mount Airy, N.C.; one brother, James F. Martin of Winchester; and one sister, Peggy Dickerson of Salem.
Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Revs. Jason Bryant, Virgil Soots and Keith Missell officiated. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in Nettle Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lewis Martin, Butch Smith, Jerry Doss, John Clark, Eddie Lawrence, Michael Overby, Brian Puckett, Tyler Puckett, Novel Foley, Bobby Day, Wayne Tatum and Roy Martin.

LOLA B. PAYNE
Lola Allie Bowman Payne, 78, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, November 17, 2002, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy.
She was born in Patrick County on January 20, 1924 and was a daughter of the late James M. and Addie S. Bowman. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Muncie O. Bowman, Ausby S. Bowman, Roden L. Bowman and Haywood N. Bowman; and a sister, Nancy Belle B. Willis.
She retired from Whitey's Radiator Shop, Inc., where she was employed as the office manager and bookkeeper. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Patsy L. Payne of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Michael Payne of Mount Airy; two sisters, Inis Smith and Iris Adkins, both of Mount Airy; five brothers, Odell Bowman and Pate Bowman, both of Claudville, Millard Bowman and Gilmer Bowman, both of Mount Airy, and Wade Bowman of Cana; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 19, at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy by the Revs. Jimmy McCraw and David C. Ward. Burial was in Skyline Memory Gardens.
ADA F. CONNER
Ada Fulcher Conner, 85, of South Mayo Drive, Stuart, died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born July 23, 1917 in Patrick County to the late Frederick Washington Fulcher and the late Claudia Beatrice Hutchens Fulcher. She was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Conner, and three brothers, Ernest Fulcher, Thomas Fulcher and Lester Fulcher.
She was retired from Patrick Springs Elementary School, where she worked in the cafeteria.
Surviving are her husband, Curtis Daniel Conner of the home; two daughters, Myra McMinn of Florida and Karen Conner of Williamsburg; three sisters, Mae F. Gregory of Lawsonville, N.C., Maude F. Hurd of Axton and Lena F. Amos of Stuart; one brother, D. Frank Fulcher of Martinsville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at the Howell Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Revs. Wayne Moore and Mark Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
BARRY D. CORNS
Barry Dale Corns, 47, of Clark House Farm Rd., Stuart, died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital as the result of a farming accident.
He was born in Patrick County on June 28, 1955 and was a son of Cecil Edward and Elaine Woodall Corns of Stuart. He was preceded in death by a twin sister, Beverly Gail Corns, who died on May 31, 1970; and his grandparents, Claude and Minnie Woodall and Sam and Lennis Corns.
He was a truck driver for Cecil Corns Trucking.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Donna Collie Corns of the home; two daughters, Ashley Nicole Corns of the home and Susan Shelton of Spencer; two sons, Brent Corns of Martinsville and Chad Corns of Patrick Springs; two stepchildren, Sgt. Jesse Frank Hayden Jr. of the U.S. Marines, California, and Katina Michelle Grubb of Madison, N.C.; three sisters, Kay Roberts of Stuart, Joy Griffin of Stuart and Connie Martin of Martinsville; four stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Revs. J.R. Shelton and Mark Wright will officiate. Burial will be in the New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery.

MARY W. COMBS
Mary Maggielean Wingard Combs, 77, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Saturday, January 18, 2003, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born November 1, 1925 in Elmore County, Ala., and was a daughter of the late George Talley Wingard and Dera Luster Wingard. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Nichols.
She retired from Spencer's, Inc. after 21 years of service, and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Jean Meeks of Elkin, N.C., Myra Lacy Nunn of Ararat, and Cora Denise Lee of Mount Airy; two sons, Parley Stanley Combs of Colfax, N.C., and David Friel Combs of Mount Airy; one sister, Atlee Evans of Wetumpka, Ala.; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy by the Rev. Tommy Nichols. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.
