SALLIE D. GILLEY
Sallie Dell Gilley, 86, of Bassett, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on October 11, 1916 and was a daughter of the late Willie and Jennie Smallwood Gilley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Gilley; three sisters, Mary Deal, Martha Sowers and Becky Cassell; and two brothers, Patrick Gilley and John Henry Gilley.
She was retired from Bassett Furniture Industries.
Surviving are four daughters, Elaine Baliles of Spencer, and Mary Clark, Bessie Cassell and Margie Murphy, all of Bassett; four sons, Alley Gilley of Stuart, William Gilley of High Point, N.C., Benny Gilley of Critz and Curtis Gilley of Bassett; one brother, Lester Gilley; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Revs. Danny Gilley and Bobby Rakes officiated. Burial was in the Critz Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Junior Murphy, Larry Murphy, Michael Wagoner, Johnny Turner, Benny Gilley, Charlie Turner, Ronnie Wagoner and Bobby Joe Gilley.
STELLA N. HARRIS
Stella Frances Norman Harris, 86, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born in Patrick County on December 19, 1916 and was a daughter of the late William Anderson and Cora Ellen Puckett Norman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Franklin Harris.
She was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Ralph Harris of State Road, N.C.; one daughter, Millie Harris Dickerson of Mount Airy; one sister, Hazel Leonard of Dobson, N.C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 1, at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy by the Rev. Eugene Puckett. Burial was in Skyline Memory Gardens.
JAMES H. LAWSON
James Hassell Lawson, 63, of Claudville, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on August 24, 1939 to the late William David Lawson and Nannie Woods Lawson of Claudville. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Lawson.
He attended Five Forks Wesleyan Church.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Thelma Lawson of Claudville; three brothers, Richard Lawson and wife Ruth of Mount Airy, N.C., Donnie Lawson and Ronnie Lawson, both of Claudville; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Carol Lawson of Stuart; two nieces; one nephew; four grand-nieces and one grand-nephew.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Revs. Curtis Hall and Gary Combs officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Smith, Dennis Brammer, Richard Lawson, Cecil Holt, Bobby Lawson and Douglas Yopp.

NANCY M. PRIDDY
Nancy Merritt Priddy, 40, of Lawsonville, N.C., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Alexandria on August 25, 1962 to the late Charles Terry Merritt and Nannie Ruth Cobbler Merritt of Lawsonville.
She was a member of Mayo Christian Church in Spencer. She served in the U.S. Army and was employed by the housing department of Wake Forest University.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Dana Priddy of the home; two daughters, Caitlyn Priddy of the home and April Priddy of Lawsonville; two sons, Bryce Priddy of the home and Derek Priddy of Lawsonville; one brother, Terry Merritt of Mount Airy, N.C.; two sisters, Lynn Boles of Lawsonville and Darla Merritt of Claudville; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mayo Christian Church with Minister Milfred Hudson and the Rev. Joe Shockley officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

JOHN M. SMITH
John Moir Smith, 94, of High Point, N.C., died Friday, April 4, 2003, at High Point Care Center.
He was born on March 16, 1909 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Melvin and Lula Lovill Smith. He was also preceded in death by a son, Delmar Gray Smith; two sisters, Lizzie Smith and Hattie Reynolds; and a brother, J.D. Smith.
He retired from Burlington Mills, was a tobacco farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Annie Ruth Culler Smith of High Point Care Center; one daughter, Janet Barnes of High Point; three sons, North Smith of Mount Airy, Clay Lance Smith of Denton, N.C.. and John Smith of Archdale, N.C.; three sisters, Lela Young and Mabel Tate of High Point and Minnie Cassidy of Mount Airy; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy. The Rev. Otis Goins officiated. Burial was in the Culler family cemetery.
MAE J. TURNER
Mae Ida Jamison Turner, 82, of Roanoke County, died Saturday, April 5, 2003.
She was born in Patrick County on November 15, 1920 and was a daughter of the late Posey John and Elsie Nolen Jamison. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Margaret; and her eldest brother, Thalus Eldren (Chubby) Samisen.
She was a long-time member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Woodrow V. Turner; one son, Vincent Turner of Collinsville; one daughter, Judy T. Fazio of Blue Ridge; three brothers, Buren Jamison of Martinsville, John L. Jamison of Martinsville and Russell Jamison of Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Nancy Brammer of Collinsville and Janie Roberson of Ferrum; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, an uncle and aunt and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. B. Bruce Griffith Jr. and Donnie Arthur officiating. A graveside service was held at the Jeremiah Turner Cemetery in Patrick County.
IVA I. COLLINS
Iva Lena Inman Collins, 82, of Patrick Springs, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on February 19, 1921 to the late James Jackson (Jim) and Jenny Willard Inman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Hassell Collins; a grandson, Jimmy Collins; two brothers, Curtis and Ernest Inman; one sister, Lois Floyd; and a son-in-law, Esley Coleman.
She was a member of Full Gospel Baptist Church. She had worked at Blue Ridge Nursing Center for several years and worked at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital from 1965 to 1986.
Surviving are three daughters, Lena C. Coleman of Patrick Springs, Alice C. Cobbler and husband Joe of Stuart and Betty C. Smith and husband LaRay of Stuart; two sons, William L. Collins of Patrick Springs and Hassell Odell Collins and wife Vickie of Stuart; a special daughter-in-law, Gladys Collins of Patrick Springs; one brother, James Inman of Martinsville; four sisters, Ruth Pack of Ararat, Mary Lou Robertson of Stuart, and Annie Goode and Sallie Rorrer, both of Woolwine; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Thomas Rutherford officiating. Burial will be in Creasey's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

BESSIE C. CORNS
Bessie Compton Corns, 75, of Moorefield Store Rd., Stuart, died Monday, June 9, 2003 at Forsyth Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on February 22, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Clay and Curvie H. Compton Brown.
She attended Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Alex Randolph Corns of the home; three daughters, Louise Welch of Pine Hall, N.C., Linda Corns of Lawsonville, N.C., and Loretta Sheppard of Stuart; two sons, Leroy Corns of Patrick Springs and Larry Corns of Stuart; one sister, Margaret Stovall of Lawsonville; a half-sister, Eldean Smith of Horsepasture; two brothers, Lewis Compton of Mount Airy, N.C. and Michael Compton of Ridgeway; a half-brother, Fred Brown of Horsepasture; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart by Ministers Curtis Hall and Paul Clark. Burial, which will be private, will be in the Corns family cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
PHYLLIS R. DAVIS
Phyllis Reed Davis, 54, of Collinsville, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born November 23, 1948 in West Virginia and was a daughter of the late Leroy Reed and Ernie Elizabeth Canter Reed. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arber Cecil Davis.
She worked for Fieldcrest Mills for 14 years and was of the Holiness faith.
Surviving are one daughter, Tina Foley of Collinsville; three sons, Arber C. Davis Jr. of Patrick Springs, and Homer B. Davis and John William Collins of Collinsville; one brother, Richard Reed of Martinsville; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home by Pastor Dale Wilson. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Les Hussey, Melvin Davis, Earl Deskins, Tommy Wheeler, Mark Mullins and Michael Deskins.
GROVER L. DeHART
Grover Linville DeHart, 89, of Fairystone Hwy., Stuart, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
He was born in Patrick County on March 29, 1914 and was a son of the late Bunyan and Dovie Walker DeHart. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eva Myrtle Morrison DeHart.
He was retired from Oscar Harris Construction after 12 years of service.
DeHart served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of Fairystone Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Rita Spencer of Stuart; two sisters, Ruth Martin of Mount Airy, N.C., and Mary Lee Martin of Stuart; two brothers, Walker DeHart and Harry DeHart, both of Stuart; and one grandson.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart by Kelly G. Ratcliff. Burial, with full military honors, was in the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Keven Spencer, Brad Morrison, Tip Belcher, Kelly Dillion, Sparks Thomas Jr. and Darrin Thomas.

MARGARET R. EDWARDS
Margaret Ruth Edith Edwards, 72, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born August 14, 1930 in Patrick County and was the youngest of six children born to the late George and Odessa Rucker Houchins. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Dillard Houchins, George Houchins Jr. and James Houchins; and one sister, Lucy Hansford.
She attended the public schools of Patrick County and completing her schooling in Winston-Salem.
During her childhood years, she joined First Christian Church of Stuart, where she was a dedicated and faithful member. Over the years she served as a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship, chairman of the deacon board, president of the senior choir and usher board.
She received several honors and most recently was recognized for faithful and dedicated service as chairperson of the Church Board and for Distinguished Christian Service.
She was a homemaker, as well as a caretaker volunteering, at Martinsville Hospital as a "Gray Lady" and sitting with the sick and shut-in throughout the community. She also worked the polls during elections. She was a member of the Spencer-Horsepasture Family and Community Educators, formerly known as the Home Demonstration Club, of which she served as treasurer.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Robert Lee Edwards; one sister, Mary L. Dulin of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Susan Norman Tores of San Leandro, Calif.; two sons, James Robert Edwards of Long Island, N.Y., and Michael Edwards of Ridgeway; four grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-laws, relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. at Christian View Baptist Church with Dr. Roger R. Hagwood officiating. Burial will be at Carver Memorial Gardens.
Family visitations will be held tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at First Christian Church, Forest Lane, Stuart; and Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church, 360 Arrowhead Circle, Spencer.
Donations may be sent in her honor and memory to the Building Fund to First Christian Church of Stuart.

CURTIS D. FULCHER
Curtis Dickerson Fulcher Sr., 85, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 6, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Patton Fulcher, and a sister, Catherine Hagan.
He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater and attained the rank of master sergeant. Following military service he graduated from National Business College. He worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a certified public accountant, and retired at age 63.
Fulcher was a long-time member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church and the Izaak Walton League.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Fulcher of Roanoke; one son, Curtis D. "Rick" Fulcher Jr. of Richmond; two brothers, Clarence Fulcher and Kyle Fulcher, both of Fieldale; four sisters, Lorene Bishop of Patrick Springs, Ethelyne Daniels of Danville, Irene Raper of Fieldale and Coleen Shough of Patrick Springs; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Huntington Court United Methodist Church. The Revs. Richard Woodall and George Stewart officiated. Burial, with military honors by the Army and V.F.W. Post No. 1264, was in Sherwood Memorial Park.

MABEL H. PENDLETON
Mabel Jane Hopkins Pendleton, 91, of Lone Ivy Rd., Stuart, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on February 22, 1912 to the late Matt and Ella DeHart Hopkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe N. Pendleton; a sister, Josie Hopkins; and a brother, Sammy G. Hopkins.
She was a charter member of the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a former secretary for the church Sunday school and a former member of the women's ministries.
Surviving are four sons, Buddy Pendleton of Woolwine, Bob Pendleton of Patrick Springs, and Bruce Pendleton and Lane Pendleton, both of Stuart; two daughters, Faye Plaster of Patrick Springs and Kaye Rorrer of Stuart; two sisters, Mamie H. Wood of Stuart and Dovie H. Brown of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Wesley R. Hopkins of Woolwine; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Revs. David Riffe and H.W. Brown officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Hopkins, John Hopkins, Lester Wood, Randall Martin, Jason Plaster, Ryan Pendleton, Eric Rorrer, and Matthew Rorrer.
