QUINTON P. LESTER
Quinton Pete Lester, 67, of Stuart and formerly of Bassett, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born October 27, 1936 in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late Lillard and Mae Lockhart Lester. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William (Bill) Lester.
He was a member of Whitestone Old Regular Baptist Church in Fork Mountain.
Surviving are two sisters, Maggie Craig of Stuart and Jean Stewart of Bassett, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Patrick Memorial Gardens with Charles Lester officiating.

JOSEPH W. PAYNE
Joseph W. Payne, 73, of Stuart and formerly of Blacksburg, died Saturday, May 29, 2004.
He was born April 29, 1931 in Pulaski County and was a son of the late Herman Luther and Martha Rosetta Tate Payne. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances DeHart Payne; a daughter, Mamie Payne Riggins; a son, Eugene Payne; and a sister, Ruth Beasley.
He was retired from Salem Stone Corporation.
Surviving are one son, Virgil Payne of Stuart; four daughters, Carolyn Viars of Max Meadows, and Eva Vipperman, Deborah Clifton and Diane Stegall, all of Stuart; three brothers, Dan Payne, Ben Payne and James Payne, all of Max Meadows; four sisters, Opal Bedsaul of Galax, Bonnie Nelson of Max Meadows, Ester Davis of Salem and Aleen Nelson of Wytheville; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Reese Funeral Home chapel in Austinville
with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the Hurst Cemetery.
RAYMOND S. POWELL
Raymond Samuel Powell, 93, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Ia.
He was born March 6, 1911 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Waller Reeves and Lucy Alberta Hubbard Powell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gladys L. Kauffman Powell, in 1995; three sisters and six brothers.
Before his retirement he was a dairy farmer.
Surviving are one daughter, Carol Seufferlein of Cedar Falls; one son, Roger Powell of Ontario, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 13 at Cedarloo Church of Christ in Cedar Falls with Terry Seufferlein officiating. Burial was in Red Line Church of Christ Cemetery in Harlan, Ia.
Arrangements were by Dahl-Van Howe-Schoof Funeral Home.
ALYEES C. TURNER
Hollis Alyees Clark Turner, 79, of Woolwine Hwy., Stuart, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County on March 1, 1925 to the late William Brian and Hollis DeHart Clark. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Burton Turner, and two brothers, William S. "Bill" Clark and Rodger D. Clark.
She was a graduate of Radford University and had been a teacher at Sandy Ridge Elementary School for over 30 years before retiring. She was a long-time member of Woolwine United Methodist Church and was a member of the Woolwine Ruritan Club.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Stephen Turner of Axton and William Edward Turner of Stuart; one daughter, Rebecca Susan Moran of Stuart; one sister, Charlotte Ann Spencer of Woolwine; three brothers, Ray Lee Clark of Stuart, Michael Douglas Clark of Woolwine and Thomas Harry Clark of Collinsville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday at Woolwine United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Stover officiating. Burial was in the Woolwine Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Alan Hamm, Jonathan Clark, Chris Clark, Eugene DeHart, Jimmy Clark and Tommy Haynes.

EDITH C. WILLIAMS
Edith Cochran Williams, 86, of Stuart, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in January 21, 1918 in Patrick County to the late John Bunyan and Ollie Mae Walker Cochran. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Woodrow Williams; a son, Clarence Wesley Williams; a sister, Arlene C. Miller; and a brother, Ardith B. Cochran.
She was a long-time member of Stuart Baptist Church where she participated in the hand bell choir, the Murray Thompson Sunday School Class, and the Elaine Hancock Circle. She was also a member of the Buffalo Ridge Home Demonstration Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Yvonne Clark and Sandra Harris, both of Stuart; one son, Jack Williams of Stuart; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (today) Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Dr. Clint Hopkins and the Rev. Bucky Hunsicker will officiate. Burial will be in the Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery.

ROBERT B. WILLIAMS
Robert "Bob" Burns Williams, 81, of Dublin, died Friday, May 28, 2004.
He was born in Kentucky on May 25, 1923 to the late Grace Rorrer and John P. Williams. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Annie Tolbert Williams, and a brother.
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II. He was retired from Hercules.
Surviving are one daughter, Judy W. Mabry of Franklin, N.C.; six sisters, Mary Fern Baldwin of Hillsville, Bernice W. Scheffer, Tecora W. Quesinberry of Stuart, India (Dot) Haynes of Mount Airy, N.C., Juanita W. Rogers of Richmond and Genell Williams of Bassett; three brothers, John (Buck) Williams of Jessup, Md., Frank D. Williams of Sparta, N.C., and Joel P. Williams of Elkins, N.C.; one grandson and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Sunrise Burial Park in Radford. The Rev. Jim Sasser will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
ELLIE H. WILLIS
Ellie Hylton Willis, 77, of Martinsville, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center.
She was born February 20, 1927 in Woolwine and was a daughter of the late John A. and Bessie Hall Hylton. She was also preceded in death by a stepson, Kenneth Willis; a brother, Ed Hylton; and a sister, Eva Talbert.
She was retired from DuPont with 38 years of service and was a member of Villa Heights Baptist Church for over 40 years. She was a member of the Preston Ruritan Club.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Ruel C. Willis of the home; one daughter, Gloria Bowers of Collinsville; one son, Larry W. Campbell of Smithfield; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Spangenburg officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
ADDIE J. WOOD
Addie Jane Wood, 102, of Meadows of Dan, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on November 25, 1901 to the late Thomas Edward and Mary Lee Harrell Wood. The last of 12 siblings, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Georgia Barnard and Lillie Scott; and nine brothers, Edward Wood, Ernest Wood, Charlie Wood, Albert Wood, Cecil Wood, Clyde Wood, Wade Wood, Dave Wood and Beamer Wood.
She was the oldest member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, where she worked with the youth of the church.
She farmed and was the former co-owner and operator of Mayberry Trading Post.
Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews including her niece and caregiver, Dale Yeatts, and her husband, Coy Lee Yeatts.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Marshall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church.

MILDRED S. WOODALL
Mildred Scott Woodall, 76, of Rocky Mount, N.C., and formerly of Patrick County, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
She was born in Surry County, N.C., on November 28, 1927 to the late Lloyd Allen Scott and Luvie Flippin Scott Puckett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marion Woodall.
She had worked for United Elastic Corporation in Stuart and retired from George C. Moore Company in Edenton, N.C.
Surviving are one son, Leland Woodall of Rocky Mount; one brother, Marion Otis Scott of Greensboro, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Wesley Flippin officiating. Burial was in the Asbury Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Creasey, Earl Creasey, Ricky Roberson, James Bullins, Randy Woodall and Ricky Edwards.
JAMES M. BARBOUR
James Maynard Barbour, 69, of Ferrum, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born August 28, 1934 in Henry County and was a son of the late Sam and Myrtle Austin Barbour. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Estel "Gigger" Barbour and Lenwood Barbour.
He was a retired sheetmetal worker and was a member of the Vision Assembly Church of God.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ellen Carter Barbour of Woolwine; two daughters, Becky Bowles of Rocky Mount and Cindy Adams of Waterloo, Ia.; five sons, J.T. Barbour of Woolwine, Doug Barbour of Ferrum, Bryan Barbour of Lexington and Kenny Barbour and Daryl Barbour, both of Henry; two sisters, Hazelene Hazelwood of Bassett and Etholene Johnson of Henry; three brothers, Dale Barbour, Curtis Barbour and Cletis Barbour, all of Bassett; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Collins Funeral chapel in Bassett by Pastor Curtis Christian. Burial was in Henry Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Eric Moran, Jamie Barbour, Bradly Barbour, Chase Barbour, Johnny Hall and Doug Hall.
GEORGE O. CASSELL
George Oker Cassell, 77, of Bassett, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born March 17, 1927 in Henry County and was a son of the late Samuel Lester Cassell and Elizabeth Cassell. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Elder Leonard Cassell, Ralph Cassell and Watt Cassell.
A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 on the destroyer USS Mayo DD422. He was retired from Bassett Superior Lines where he was a foreman on the lumberyard.
Cassell was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church for over 50 years where he taught the young adult Sunday school class for several years.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Eloise Smith Cassell of the home; one daughter, Georgianna Cassell Stegall of Bassett; one sister, Vinie Cassell Joyce of Martinsville; three brothers, Daniel Cassell of Bassett, L.G. Cassell and Troy Cassell, both of Fieldale; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Collins Funeral chapel with Dr. Calvin Rains officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Veterans Memorial Garden, was in Blackberry Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Cassell, Paul Cassell, Donald Joyce, Ronald Cassell, Phillip Cassell, Allen Cassell, James Williams, Corey Sowder, Daniel Cassell and Tony Cassell.
CLARIS S. DOSS
Claris May Shelton Doss, 89, of Landmark Drive, Stuart, and formerly of Sandy Ridge, N.C., died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Reidsville, N.C., on May 23, 1915 and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Jettie Durham Shelton. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, William F. Robertson; her second husband, Herbert Mabe; her third husband, Elmer Doss; and a brother, Robert Lee Shelton.
She was a member of New Dan River Primitive Baptist Church in Vesta.
Surviving are two daughters, Frances Shelton and husband Robert of Stuart and Betty Bullins and husband Olyian of Lawsonville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Derek Blackard, James "Jimmy" Blackard, Junior Bullins, Susan Tucker, Jerry Bullins and Miranda Nelson; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Bernard Handy officiating. Burial was in the Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Junior Bullins, Jerry Bullins, Kennan Tucker, Vernon Nelson, Jimmy Blackard and Derek Blackard.
JAMES D. EDWARDS
James Dillard Edwards, 86, of Golf Course Rd., Spencer, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on August 23, 1917 to the late Wythe and Fannie Redd Edwards. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Sheila Lowe and Pamela Edwards; two sons, James K. Edwards and Robert S. Edwards; one sister, Sarah Penn; and two brothers, Larkin Edwards and Arthur Edwards.
He was a truck driver for over 41 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Reid Edwards of the home; one daughter, Dermia E. Thompson of Spencer; one son, Don Barry Edwards of Michigan; four sisters, Charity Martin of Ridgeway, Edith Pitzer of Martinsville, Barbara Payne of Ridgeway and Iris Stone of Indiana; two brothers, Robert Edwards and Moir S. Edwards, both of Ridgeway; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church in Spencer by Elders Carl Morgan and Colonel Hairston. Burial, with military honors by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, was in the Redd-Edwards family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ricky Tucker, Eric Lowe, Twan Lowe, Kenneth Edwards, Gregory Reid and Victor Hairston.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.
JERRY B. HENSLEY
Captain Jerry Benjamin Hensley, 35, of Greensboro, N.C., died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
He was born December 5, 1968 in Martinsville and was a son of the late Dude and Odessa Puckett Hensley.
He was a graduate of Guilford Technical Community College and was employed by the City of Greensboro. He was a squadron commander of Martinsville Composite Squadron, Virginia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Stalter Hensley; two brothers, Kenneth Terry of Chatham and Jim Warner of Lynchburg; and two stepchildren, Brad Hassell and Lydia Hassell, both of Greensboro.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Forbis & Dick Funeral Service chapel in Greensboro with the Rev. Wendy Billingslea officiating. A graveside service was held Monday at the Puckett family cemetery in Meadows of Dan.
