VADA P. HUGHES
Vada Gay Pendleton Hughes, 82, of Martinsville, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on February 8, 1922 to the late Edward Green and Vera Annice Wood Pendleton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Hughes; one sister, Clara Handy; and two brothers, Elmer and Eston Pendleton.
She was retired from Bassett Walker and was formerly employed by J.P. Stevens Co., Inc. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Fieldale.
Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Darnell Hughes Cockram of Martinsville, Martha Jane Hughes of Martinsville, and Teresa G. Gammons and husband Ronnie of Martinsville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James E. Hughes and wife Frances of Seattle, Wash., and Charles E. Hughes of Martinsville; six grandchildren, Linda Kendall, Michael Hughes, Bradley Hughes, Gary Gammons, Jackie Gammons and Jason Hughes; and five great-grandchildren, Lauren Kendall, Lyndsey Gammons, Austin Gammons, Hunter Gammons and Alyson Gammons.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Rev. J.R. Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

VERA C. KEFFER
Vera Frances Cassell Keffer, 83, of County Line Rd., Patrick Springs, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on July 14, 1920 to the late Charlie and Lucy Turner Cassell. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Rev. Ernest "Woody" Keffer, in 2003, and Richard E. Keffer, in 1958; a sister, Luna Hazelwood; and five brothers, Henry, Kennis, Archie, Fred and Ellis Cassell.
She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school and was a member of the choir. She was also active in the Women's Missionary Union and was a leader of the girls' auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Bittle E. Keffer of the home; two daughters, Mary Frances Stone of the home and Joyce Ann Ray of Martinsville; two sons, Bruce Keffer of Collinsville and Toby Keffer of Fieldale; one sister, Tressie Cooper of Critz; one brother, Irvin Cassell of Bridgewater; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Pleasant View Baptist Church by the Revs. Rick Anderson and Wayne D. Hannah. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are by Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.
TROY MARTIN
Troy Martin, 84, of Troy Lane, Patrick Springs, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on October 24, 1919 to the late George and Callie Ratcliff Martin. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Maynard and Roger Martin; two sisters, Gladys Price and Mary Bryant; and two brothers, Fletcher and Johnnie Martin.
He was a self-employed electrician and plumber for most of his life and was one of the first electricians to wire houses in the Patrick Springs area when electricity became available. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Eldean Plaster Martin of the home; one daughter and son-in-law Doris and Victor Craighead of Patrick Springs; one brother, Arthur Martin of Patrick Springs; two sisters, Vera Plaster of Patrick Springs and Okie Plaster of Martinsville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Providence United Methodist Church with Pastor David Westmoreland and the Rev. Jack Foley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Brown, David Hubbard, Tommy Ratliff, Larry Martin, Randall Martin, Donald Plaster, Phillip Keith and Junior Turner.
Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Rakes, Cecil Cornett, Lloyd Stovall, Sammy Martin, Dickie Martin, Bobby Goard, Eldon Shough, Junior Gilley and Jimmie East.

OTRA F. PRILLAMAN
Otra Lee Fulcher Prillaman, 86, of Collinsville, died Saturday, June 12, 2004.
She was born February 4, 1918 in Patrick County and was a daughter of Luther Southern Fulcher and Mary Elizabeth Fozie Witt Fulcher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Theodore "Ted" Bernard Prillaman; a sister, Ruby Fulcher Setliff; and three brothers, Roy W. Fulcher, Dudley F. Fulcher and Bill Fulcher.
She was employed by John Redd Smith Elementary School as a cafeteria worker for 28 years. She had been a member of Fort Trial Christian Church for over 70 years.
Surviving are three daughters, Judy Prillaman Harris and Diana Prillaman Chaney, both of Collinsville, and Shirley Prillaman Whitlock of Galax; one son, Teddy Ronald Prillaman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at the Prillaman family cemetery with Travis Cassell officiating.
Pallbearers were Travis Cassell, J.J. Cassell, David Lyons, Kevin Pannell, Woodrow Chaney, Brian Nichols and Leonard Whitlock.
Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Services in Bassett.
ETHEL R. VIA
Ethel Rakes Via, 80, of Fieldale, died June 15, 2004, at Stanleytown Health Care Center.
She was born on February 18, 1924 in Lunenburg County and subsequently moved to Patrick County. She was a daughter of the late Sparrel Clayton Rakes and Rada Martin Rakes. She was also preceded in death by a son, Archie Via, and a brother, Ralph Rakes.
She retired in 1971 as a cashier and hostess for the Lavinder House in Collinsville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Collinsville where she was a past member of the WMU and was a member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her husband, A. Neal Via of the home; one daughter, Betty Lou Via Goss of Charlottesville; one son, Benny Lee Via of Eden, N.C.; two sisters, Vera R. Bryant of Collinsville and Mary Lois Simmons of Vienna; two brothers, Chester Rakes of Fieldale and Willis Rakes of Stuart; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at First Baptist Church of Collinsville. Dr. Calvin Rains officiated. Burial was in the Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Patrick County.

JOHN R. WRIGHT
John Richard Wright, 85, of Bassett, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born August 14, 1918 in Patrick Springs and was a son of the late John and Cora Rebecca Turner Wright. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Compton and Suzie Oliver, and four brothers, Josiah Wright, Roy Wright, Rudolph Wright and Paul Wright.
He was a U.S. Army sergeant during World War II and served with battalions in China, Burma and India. He retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 35 years of service and was a former member of the Bassett Rescue Squad.
Wright was a member of First Baptist Church for 57 years, where he was a member of the Yeaman Bible Class.
Surviving are his wife, Goldie Stone Wright of the home; two daughters, Becky Wright Helms of Bassett and Kathy Wright Plogger of Collinsville; one sister, Queenie Wright of Martinsville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday at First Baptist Church of Bassett. The Rev. Lew Bennett officiated. Burial, with military honors, was in Roselawn Burial Park.

PATRICIA B. ALLISON
Patricia Barber "Pat" Allison, 56, of 215 Roma Road, Haw River, N.C., died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at the Hospice Home after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Stuart and was the daughter of Josy Foley McCuiston of Burlington, N.C.
She was an LPN with Alamance County Hospital and Alamance Regional Medical Center for over 20 years. She attended Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan Mark and Celeste Allison of Burlington, and her grandchildren, Brittany, Tanner and Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Lowe Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. W.D. Allison. A graveside service will be held today at 4 p.m. at John Adams Cemetery in Stuart.

J. BEAMAN HODGES
Jesse "Beaman" Hodges, 84, of Bassett, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born in Patrick County on October 15, 1919 to John Dillard and Mattie Hopkins Hodges. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Milton Hodges, James Hodges and Lonnie Hodges; and a guardian son, John Milton Hodges Jr.
He served as a corporal with the 224th Field Artillery Service Co. of the U.S. Army during World War II. His tour included Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal with the Bronze Arrowhead and Medal of Jubilee of Liberty from France, in commemoration of D-Day.
He was a lifetime member of Bassett Rescue Squad and was a member of the Williamson-Washburn Post No. 116 of the 29th Division Association.
Hodges retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 27 years of service. He was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church and received the "Hometown Hero" award given by WDBJ-TV.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Ramsey Hodges of the home; one daughter, Peggy Anne Mathews of Roanoke; a guardian daughter, Elsie Hodges Bryant of Stuart; one son, Jesse Bryan Hodges of Bassett; a guardian son, David Hodges of Martinsville; one sister, Ruth H. Gravely of Collinsville; one brother, Claude Hodges of Clayton, Del.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Fort Trial Baptist Church. The Revs. Joey McNeill, James Alsop and Bob Cloninger officiated. Burial, with military rites by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County, was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Richard Craig, Pete Fulcher, Donnie Johnson, Larry Lavinder, Harvie McAlexander, Bill Nelson, Fred Roach and Larry Turner.

KING D. HOPKINS
King David Hopkins, 91, of Bassett, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at his home.
He was born March 16, 1913 in Henry County and was a son of the late Pete King Hopkins and Mary Lou Hopkins. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George Hopkins and Lewis Hopkins; and four sisters, Martha Dalton and three who died as infants.
He retired from American Furniture of Martinsville with 25 years of service and was a member of County Line Church of God of Prophecy.
Surviving are his wife, Ivey Lee Hopkins of the home; one son, William David Hopkins of Bassett; one daughter, Ola Mae Flannery of Patrick Springs; one brother, Reuben J. Hopkins of Bassett; one sister, Mattie H. Holley of Martinsville; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at County Line Church of God of Prophecy with Pastor Freddie Bonds and Jay Manning officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bobby Hopkins, Danny Gilley, Sam Jones, Bill Walker, Lawrence Cole and Bill Cassell.

FRANCES P. LYNCH
Frances Pierce Lynch, 88, of Bedford, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Bedford Memorial Hospital.
She was born September 6, 1915 in Bedford County and was a daughter of the late Robert S. and Carrie Updike Pierce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Larry Oren Lynch.
She was a member of the Ephesus United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry D. and Joyce G. Lynch of Bedford and Douglas W. and Dianne Lynch of Meadows of Dan; one brother and sister-in-law, Sherman and Eva Pierce of Bedford; one sister, Helen Farris of Bedford; three grandsons and their wives, Stephen and Brenda Lynch of Allentown, Pa., Michael and Cheryl Lynch of Glen Allen and Tony and Linda Dingus of Bedford; one stepgrandson, Matthew Beaver; one granddaughter and her husband, Cheri and Rick Dellinger of Bedford; one stepgranddaughter and her husband, Adina and Michael Martin; four great-grandchildren, Bryce Lynch, Alisha Dingus, Christopher Dingus and Geri Dellinger; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Straight; and a special niece, Loretta Lynch Miller of Forest and 13 special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 24, at Updike Funeral Chapel in Bedford by the Revs. Rick Dellinger and Gary Shelton. Burial was in Virginia Memorial Park.
VIRGINIA J. NUNN
Virginia "Ginny" Frances Jessup Nunn, 78, of Claudville, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Twin County Regional Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County on June 22, 1926 to the late Charlie Reid and Eunice Symyra Jessup. She was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Eleni Moumouris.
She was retired from Sara Lee Corporation with 41 years of service.
Surviving are her husband, L.C. Nunn of the home; one daughter, Jewel Baldwin of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, Dr. Donald Ray Nunn of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Georgie Louise Hill of Ararat and Hazel Pauline Evans of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 20, at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy with the Revs. Arnold Beard, Buford Jessup and Tim Burton officiating. Entombment was in Skyline Memorial Gardens.

HOWARD C. PILSON
Howard Curtis Pilson, 87, of Buena Vista Ave., Stuart, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on October 24, 1916 and was a son of the late Rufus Virgil and Sarah Jane Lawless Pilson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Edith Virginia Pilson; and three brothers, O.E. Pilson, Moir Pilson and Herbert Pilson.
He attended Blue Ridge Mission School and graduated from Fieldale High School in 1936. He graduated from Berea College in Berea, Ky., in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1948, then returned to Patrick County where he practiced law for 40 years.
Pilson was an active member of the community and was a member of the Jaycees, American Legion, Lions Club, Blue Ridge Regional Library Board, Patrick County Museum Board, Allied Families of Patrick and Henry County, and was a 50-year member of the Masons.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lucy Johnson Pilson of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Ronnie Pilson of Stuart; one son, William Howard Pilson of Stuart; two grandchildren, Christopher Dallas Pilson and James Curtis Pilson; one sister, Bertha Coates of Stuart; and two nieces, Bobbie Pilson Rorrer of Tucson, Ariz., and Jane Pilson of Ridgeway.
A graveside service was held Sunday at Fairystone Baptist Church cemetery with Pastor James Dunn officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard.
Pallbearers were Clyde Thomas, Denny Alley, Posey Baliles, Gary Griffith, Albert Baliles, Bill Staples, Danny Smith, Roy Pilson, John Pilson and Arnold Dolby.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Patrick-Henry Bar Association.

Ivan Burton Sehen, 45, of Laurel Fork, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at him home.
He was born in Patrick County on July 14, 1959 to Patsy Mae Griffith Sehen of Laurel Fork and the late William E. Sehen.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three brothers, William Franklin Sehen of Meadows of Dan, James Thomas Sehen of Laurel Fork and Jessie Harding Sehen and wife Lisa of Meadows of Dan; three nephews, Allen, Kevin and Dustin Sehen; and a special friend, Larry Burnette.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Joe Lambert officiating. Burial will be in the Knowles-Eden family cemetery.
