MARY E. SWAIM
Mary Emma Swaim, 83, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, after complications from falls in September and December 2003.
She was born February 23, 1921 in Relay, Md., and was a daughter of the late Boyd Hunter and Emma Elizabeth Webb Hovermill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe R. Swaim; three brothers, Melvin Hovermill, Boyd Hovermill and John Webb; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Romero Belcher; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeremy Buzzerd and Lindsay Buzzerd.
She was a member of the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ. She moved to Morgan County in 1934 and was a 1937 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. She worked at Interwoven Hosiery Mill in Berkeley Springs and at Londontown Manufacturing Company in Hancock, Md., for 21 years. She retired in 1983 as a supervisor in the pressing department.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda S. Buzzerd of Berkeley Springs, Mary Jo Knight of Stuart and Elizabeth Anne Johnson of Naperville, Ill.; three sons, Thomas R. Swaim and Samuel D. Swaim, both of Berkeley Springs, and Lowell E. "Jack" Swaim of Weirton, W.Va.; one sister, Edith Klein of Melbourne, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs by Clarence McDowell. Burial will be in Duckwall Church Cemetery in Morgan County, W.Va.

BRENDA H. THOMAS
Brenda Sue Harrison Thomas, 53, of Dobson, N.C., died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on January 14, 1951 and was a daughter of Victor Ralph "Bobby" Harrison of Dobson and the late Nellie Mildred Branscome Harrison. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Kay Thomas.
She was a homemaker and attended Bear Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her father, are her husband of 37 years, Steve Elwood Thomas of the home; one daughter, Michele Cockerham of Dobson; one son, Elwood Steve Thomas of Dobson; five sisters, Linda Stanley of Mount Airy, N.C., Sandra , Cathy Grogan of Virginia Beach, Vicky Koler of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Arbutus Harrison of Eden, N.C.; one brother, Ralph Harrison of Martinsville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday at Bear Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Dan Buid, Johnny Hawks and Roger Meyers officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson.
JOHN H. VIPPERMAN
John Henry Vipperman, 80, of Patrick Springs, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on November 14, 1923 to the late Noah and Matilda Pack Vipperman. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mindy Hiatt and Elsie Queen; and three brothers, James Vipperman, Elzie Vipperman and Joe Vipperman.
He retired from Wilson Quarries with 38 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Elvie Hooker Vipperman of Stuart; five sons, Henry Vipperman of Bassett, Jimmy Vipperman of Stuart, James Vipperman of Portsmouth, Paul Vipperman of Vesta and Amos Vipperman of Stuart; four daughters, Shirley Leath and Glennie Clifton, both of Patrick Springs, Bonnie Reynolds of Rural Hall, N.C., and Mary McKenzie of King, N.C.; one brother, William Vipperman of Mount Airy, N.C.; one sister, Gracie East of Stuart; 17 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Full Gospel Pentecostal Holiness Church by J.R. Vipperman, Stacy Vipperman and Michael Leath officiating. Burial was in the Hooker family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jamie Vipperman, Sammy Goad, Rhonda Barrett, Barry Vipperman, Lentford Vipperman, Joshua Comer, Austin Leath, Dale Leath, Jessica Leath, Tina Jefferson, Kevin Vipperman, Billy Goins, Sanford Clifton, Wyatt Comer and Billy Leath.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
FRANKLIN A. ALLEN
Franklin A. "Hambone" Allen, 50, of Hylton Hollow Lane, Woolwine, died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at his shop in Cana. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on May 25, 1954 and was a son of the late Floyd Ellis Allen and Virginia Mae Gwynn Allen. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Ellis Allen. He was the owner/operator of Select Auto Sales in Mount Airy, N.C. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Janie" Lawson Allen of the home; four daughters, Jessie Renee Turner of Martinsville, Tracey Booth of Stuart, and Amber Shay Allen and Shelby Nicole Allen, both of the home; three sisters, Glenda Hylton of Woolwine, Della Gwynn of Cana and Darlene McMillian of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; two brothers, Ernest Allen of Hillsville and Robert Allen of Mount Airy; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Gerald Melton officiating. Burial was in the Hylton family cemetery in Woolwine. RICHARD W. BOAZ
Richard W. "Dick" Boaz, of 1102 Corn Tassel Trail, Martinsville, died Monday morning, October 4, 2004, at his home. He was born September 22, 1919 in Stuart to James Robert and Kate Gilley Boaz. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ada Cox Boaz, four brothers and two sisters. He served in the European Theater during World War II and was the recipient of five Battle Stars and numerous citations. He was retired after working 43 years as a sales representative with Stone Container and Packaging Products, Inc. Boaz was a member of First United Methodist Church in Martinsville where he served on the church administrative board and was a member of the Sheppe-Lane Sunday School Class. He had served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army and was a member of Masonic Lodge #152. Surviving are one daughter, Kay T. Boaz of Collinsville; one son, Donald C. Boaz of Critz; one brother, Robert "Buck" Boaz of Richmond; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville with the Rev. Ronald Mateer officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. LORENE L. BRYANT
Lorene Layman Bryant, 73, of Ayers Orchard Rd., Stuart, died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Henry County on March 9, 1931 to the late John William and Elizabeth Rachel Ramsey Layman. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Layman, and three sisters, Glenna Jones, Hazel Carter and Georgia Lawson. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and had retired from United Elastic Corporation with 45 years of service. Surviving are her husband, Henry A. Bryant of the home; one daughter, Emily B. Overby of Westfield, N.C., one sister, Velma Handy of Stuart; one brother, Albert Layman of Stuart; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Warren Stackhouse officiating. Burial will be in the Wayside Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
EUGENE M. CANNADAY
Eugene Marvin "Blue" Cannaday, 81, of Fieldale, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on March 8, 1923 and was a son of the late Charlie Mack Cannaday and Florida Griffith Cannaday. He was also preceded in death by a his wife, Doris H. Cannaday; a son, Douglas E. Cannaday; a brother, Irvin Cannaday; and two sisters, Geneva Craddock and Atrice Underwood. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren. Surviving are two sons, Curtis Cannaday of North Carolina and Marvin Cannaday of Martinsville; one daughter, Sandra Cannaday Fransioli of Plymouth, Mich.; five brothers, Odell Cannaday and Gilbert Cannaday, both of Martinsville, Tim Cannaday of Bassett, Edgar Cannaday of Georgia and Buford Cannaday of Stuart; one sister, Ermigene Fulcher of Fieldale; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren by Pastor Marvin Wade and the Rev. Sandra Cannaday. Burial, with military rites by the Martinsville/Henry County Veterans Honor Guard, was in the church cemetery. MABEL J. EVANS
Mabel Joyce Evans, 89, of Stoneville, N.C., died Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C. She was born September 9, 1915 in Rockingham County, N.C., to the late Duke W. and Daisy Grogan Joyce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Reid Evans Sr.; sons, Bobby Gene Evans and Howard Reid Evans Jr.; brothers, James A. "Jim" Joyce and Joe Frank "Little Joe" Joyce; and grandchildren, Norma Jean, James Howard, Donna Gail, Marilyn Jane Evans and infant girl Evans. Surviving are three sons, Alton F. Evans of Jacksonville, N.C., Wayne J. Evans of Stoneville and Raymond F. "Pete" Evans of Auburn, N.Y.; four daughters, Elaine Smith of Mayodan, N.C., Marie Hopkins of Stuart, Jo Ann Johnson of Madison, N.C., and Vivian Lester of Sandy Ridge, N.C.; two daughters-in-law; 18 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church, Smith Rd., Stoneville, of which she was a member. Elder Kenneth Hopkins, Brother Bob Smith and the Rev. Jane Bullins Goard, 54, of Axton, died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Patrick County on December 14, 1949 and was a daughter of Elva Hundley Bullins of Martinsville and the late Isaac "Bull" A. Bullins. She was formerly employed by Tultex and Bassett-Walker. Surviving are her husband, Frank N. Goard of the home; two daughters, Sheri Goard of the home and Sandi Lockridge of Axton; one son, Scott Goard of the home; one brother, David Bullins of Martinsville; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Norris Funeral services chapel with Minister Tim Kirby officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
SOPHIA J. HAGEE
Sophia Jane Hagee, 29, of Fieldale, died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at her home. She was born November 20, 1974 in Stuart and was a daughter of Helen Margaret Rakes of Bassett and the late Ralph Clifford Hagee. She was also preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Ralph Miller Hagee, and her maternal grandparents, Howard Russell Rakes and Mary Ann Rakes. She was a 1992 graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School and was of the Baptist faith. She had worked at Lineal Technology in Rocky Mount for 11 months as an inventory coordinator. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one son, Ryan Buller of the home; her stepfather, Franklin Epperson of Bassett; two sisters, Mary Ann Hodges of Ridgeway and Shannon Bowers of Collinsville; three stepsisters, Melodie Davis of Bassett, Kimberly Willard of Preston and Pamela Epperson of Wilmington, N.C.; one brother, Ralph C. Hagee Jr. of Collinsville; one stepbrother, Todd Epperson of Bassett; her paternal grandmother, Evelyn Hagee of Bassett; four nephews and two nieces. Caress Myrtis Webb Hubbard, 87, of Meadows of Dan, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Patrick County on March 26, 1917 to the late Talmadge DeWite Webb and Lillie Vipperman Webb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Harding Hubbard; a daughter, Betty Jo Hubbard; three sisters, Vola Cockram, Fannie Hubbard and Lula Wood; and two brothers Saunders Webb and Avery Webb. Surviving are one son, Donald Hubbard of Asheboro, N.C.; one sister, Velva Clifton of Martinsville; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart at 1 p.m. Thursday and will proceed to the graveside service, which will be held at 2 p.m. at the Hubbard family cemetery with Elder Edward Bowman officiating.
JOE H. MARTIN
Joe Henry Martin, 90, of Landmark Center in Stuart and formerly of Pine View St., Patrick Springs, died October 4, 2004, at the R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. He was born April 28, 1914 in Patrick County and was a son of the late George Robert Martin and Annie Wood Martin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Dalton Martin; brothers Clarence Martin, Amos Martin, Clyde Martin, Elbert Martin, Harvey Martin; a sister, Emma Layman; and sons-in-law Harold Barbour and Jeffery A. Adkins. He was retired from J.P. Stevens in Stuart after many years of employment. He was a life-long member of Providence United Methodist Church in Patrick Springs. Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis M. Barbour of Patrick Springs and Mary Jane Adkins of Mayodan, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Joe and Trena Martin of Claudville; one brother, Curtis Martin of Dillons Fork; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. JOHN PRICE
John Price, 77, of Patrick Springs, died March 16, 2004, in New York. He was born March 26, 1926 in New York and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and was an active member of the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Surviving are his wife, Irma Price of the home; three daughters, Joan Sink, Lisa O'Conner and Ronnie Hammer, all of Long Island, N.Y.; and one son, John Price of Long Island. A memorial service, with full military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 105.

Richard "Ricky" Lee Prillaman, 49, of Eden, N.C., died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at his home. A native of Martinsville, was the son of William David and Evelyn Prillaman of Martinsville. He was employed by ABCO Automation as a supervisor. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Sharon Frazier Prillaman of the home; one daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Leighann Prillaman of the home; one brother, Larry Prillaman of Martinsville; three sisters, Faye Elgin of Tennessee, Wanda Willard of Ridgeway and Lisa Corns of Patrick Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Andrew Akers Robertson, 72, of Martin Farm Rd., Patrick Springs, died Thursday, September 30, 2004, at the R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. He was born in Stokes County, N.C., on February 11, 1932 to the late Thomas and Dora Mabe Robertson. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was retired after working as a self-employed contractor. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Dalton Robertson of the home; two sons, Mark Robertson of Roanoke and Neil Robertson of Patrick Springs; three sisters, Ethylene Walker of Stuart, Louise Wood of Danbury, N.C., and Irene Ruffin of Archdale, N.C.; and one grandchild. Funeral services were held Saturday at Howell Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Wayne Hannah officiated. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Helen Hall Stanley, 88, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Laurel Fork. She was born in Carroll County on March 23, 1916 to the late Walter and Minnie Webb Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lionel O. Stanley; a daughter, Patsy A. Copenhaven; a sister, Fern Crowder; and three brothers, Calvin Hall, Paul Hall and Elton Hall. She was a homemaker and business assistant and attended Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Susie M. Burkhart of Laurel Fork; three sons, Donald L. Stanley, Melvin C. Stanley and Jimmy M. Stanley, all of Meadows of Dan; one brother, Ivan "Jack" Hall of Northern Virginia; one sister, J. Mae Baesanyi of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. John Elmo Turner, 76, of Patrick Springs, died Monday, October 4, 2004 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born in Patrick County on May 11, 1928 to the late Leonard Tyler Turner and Martha Susan Texas Adams Turner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Cockram Turner; a sister, Annie Hestell Foley; and a brother, Richard Nesco Turner. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and worked as a building contractor. Surviving are two daughters, Carol Turner-Janosko of Patrick Springs and Reba Jean Hildebrand and husband Bradley of Yorba Linda, Calif.; two sisters, Lelia Lizzie Bowles and Velda Mae Handy, both of Patrick Springs; two brothers, J. Edwin Turner and Junior L. Turner, both of Patrick Springs; and four grandchildren, John Allen Silvis, Kimberly and Josh Peterson, Tiffany and Brock Geiger and John-Michael Janosko. R.J. WILSON
R.J. Wilson, 66, of Bassett, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at his home. He was born May 26, 1938 in Danbury, N.C., and was a son of Hamon Wilson of Patrick Springs and the late Lena Mabe Wilson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Wood. He worked as a foreman at Bassett Chair for 17 years and retired from Tultex as a supervisor after 15 years of service. After retiring, he became a farmer and beekeeper. He was a member of the Virginia Beekeepers Association and was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Collinsville. Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife of 46 years, Frances Guthrie Wilson of the home; one daughter, Sandra Wilson Barrow of Patrick Springs; one son, Jay Wilson of Bassett; three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at Norris Funeral Services with Pastor Raymond Moorefield officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park. Pallbearers were Leo Dooley, Dean Hill, Kenneth Guthrie, Larry Guthrie, Henry Turner, Jimmy Carter, Don Hagy, Kenneth Meador, Thomas Owens and Junior Light.
