RUBY L. FRANCE
Ruby Lee France, 86, of Collinsville, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare in Martinsville. She was born in Bassett on March 15, 1918 and was a daughter of the late Hayes Barbour and Lucy Hairston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George W. France. She retired from Stanley Furniture Company and was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Westover Wimbush and Fara Mae Hairston, both of Stuart, and Equilla Henderson of Martinsville; one son, Dr. James S. Norman of Martinsville; two stepdaughters, Eloise France and Mary Hairston, both of Fieldale; two stepsons, Alvin France and Bishop James N. France, both of Fieldale; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. Michael Penn. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were James A. Barbour, Brent Thompson, Marvin Norman, James H. Barbour, Sylvester Wimbush and Ronnie Wimbush.
ALEXANDER N. HAWKS
Alexander N. "Alex" Hawks, 91, of Ridgeway, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Patrick County on July 11, 1913 to the late William and Savannah Pruitt Hawks. He was also preceded in death by his foster parents, Lawrence and Rhoda (Sissy) Quesenberry; four brothers, Early Hawks, Victor Hawks, Floyd Hawks and Arnold Hawks; and a sister, Rebecca Prillaman. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from Gravely Furniture.
Surviving are his wife, Della Clark Hawks of the home; two sisters, Elsie Shuman of Nanty Glo, Pa., and Dana Markam of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Mark Clayton officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home, or at other times at the residence of Annie Sue Hawks, Kelly Mill Rd., Stuart.
R. TERRY MARTIN
Richard "Terry" Martin, 64, of Richmond and formerly of Henry County, died Sunday, January 23, 2005. He was born in Stuart on December 26, 1940 and was a son of the late Richard E. and Margaret Mathis Martin. He graduated from Fieldale High School in 1959 and was the choir director at Fieldale Baptist Church for several years. Martin received a master of fine arts degree in music composition from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He did graduate work in music composition and orchestration at Boston University under composer Ulysses Kay. He also held a bachelor's degree in religion and philosophy with a music minor from High Point University. He composed many symphonies, including two which were performed by the UNC-G Symphony Orchestra. Martin began his career as a high school band director at Bassett High School in 1966 and became band director at John Marshall High School in Richmond in 1972. He also worked at a North Carolina high school before returning to Richmond at George Wythe High School. He was a member of the National Education Association, and performed with many groups, including the Burt Massengale Orchestra and the Woody Pittman Orchestra.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Lannie Beasley Martin; two brothers, James "Jim" Edward Martin of Collinsville and William "Bill" Everette Martin of New Bern, N.C.; and his stepmother, Jessie Soyars Martin of Martinsville.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel in Richmond. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Goochland County. Memorial contributions may be made to One Voice Chorus Inc., 3601 Frontier Drive, Richmond, Va. 23235.
HATTIE Y. McBRIDE
Hattie Mae Young McBride, 90, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Thursday, January 27, 2005, at her home.
She was born March 3, 1914 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson "Andy" and Curt Irene Bowman Young. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Millard Kelup McBride; two sons, Clinard McBride and Junior Lee McBride; three sisters, Nannie Niten, Ruth Lawson and Julie Gilbert; and four brothers, Monroe Young, Kyle Young, Sidney Young and Jim Young. She was a member of Jones Chapel Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are three daughters, Savannah Payne of Mount Airy, Mary Lou McBride of the home and Margaret Coble of Mount Airy; one son, Glenn McBride of Mount Airy; one brother, Fred Young of North Platte, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Moody Funeral Home chapel of Mount Airy by Bro. Don Collins. Burial was in the Korners Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
LESHIA M. OVERBY
Leshia Michelle Overby, 27, of South Boston and formerly of Stuart, died Friday, January 28, 2005, at the Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston. She was born in Patrick County on December 31, 1977, and was preceded in death by her father, Andrew "Pete" Overby. She was a graduate of Patrick County High School.
Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Betty Jo Sanders Williams and Pete Williams of Stuart; one brother, Ronald Lee Overby of Stuart; her maternal grandmother, Nettie Sanders of Patrick Springs; two nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Revs. Lawrence Harris and Allen Vass officiating. Burial will be in the Church of Christ cemetery in Dry Pond. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home.
LELIA C. RODGERS
Lelia Collins Rodgers, 90, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Patrick County, died Friday, January 14, 2005, in Virginia Beach Hospital. She was born in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Henry and Lenis Collins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lemly T. Rodgers; two brothers, Noel Collins and Jack Collins; a sister, Louise Collins; and a son, Wayne Rogers.
Surviving are five children, James Rodgers of Virginia Beach, Iris Lamb of Williamsburg, Mildred Jackstatter of Wisconsin, Judy Moore of Virginia Beach and Nita Williams of Cape Hatteras, N.C.; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Virginia Beach.
MAMIE P. SCOTT
Mamie Pendleton Scott, 90, of Roanoke and formerly of Bassett, died Monday, January 31, 2005. She was born in Patrick County on June 14, 1914 to the late Douglas Pendleton and Lillie Pendleton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt Scott; and a son, Maynard Scott. She was retired from Bassett Chair Co. She was a former member of Bible Baptist Church in Collinsville and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Roanoke.
Surviving are four daughters, Ella Reed of Roanoke, Christine Helton and Lillie Stegall, both of Fieldale, and Mary Cannaday of Georgia; four sons, James Scott of Martinsville, Lynwood Scott and Curtis Scott, both of Bassett, and Kenneth Scott of Floyd; 19 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Simpson Funeral Home in Roanoke with the Rev. Ron Buchanan officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Henry Memorial Park at Bassett Forks.
BETTY S. STOVALL
Betty S. Stovall, 67, of Sandston and formerly of Patrick County, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Annie Schillings; and her husband, Richard Moir "Wimpy" Stovall.
Surviving are one son, John R. Stovall of Sandston; one daughter, Jerri Rust of Danville; one sister, Thelma Ely of Hollywood, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in Richmond. A private burial was held in Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart.
MARVIN C. WILLIAMS
Marvin Curtis Williams, 79, of Danville died Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born January 29, 1926 in Stuart and was a son of the late Crey and Alice Vipperman Williams. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur Williams, Sparrel Williams and C.W. Williams, and a sister, Ethelyene Elliott. He lived most of his life in Stuart and Danville and had been a patient at Piney Forest Health Care Center since September 2004. He was employed as a mechanic with Barkhouse Ford and later retired as head mechanic with Pepsi Cola Company.
Williams served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Mae Pruitt Williams; one daughter, Connie Meeks of Danville; three sons, Ronnie Williams of Pelham, N.C., and Donald Williams and Steven Williams, both of Danville; two brothers, Otis Williams of Collinsville and Charlie Emmett Williams of Chesapeake; three sisters, Thelma Smith of Axton, Shelva Goad of Stuart and Ann Thompson of Chapel Hill, N.C.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville by the Revs. Roger Ewing and Lee Ewing. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of the daughter at 83 1 Drive, Danville.
REVIE B. WOOLEY
Revie B. Wooley, 58, of Hill Valley Rd., Stuart, died Thursday, January 27, 2005, at her home. She was born February 4, 1946 in Greensboro, N.C., and was a daughter of Beulah Martin Benton and the late Aaron Benton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tyrone Wooley Sr.; a sister, Juanita Williams; and a brother, Laddie L. Benton. She was a teacher for 36 years and had taught in the Patrick County School System for 30 years. She was teaching at Hardin Reynolds Memorial School in Critz.
Surviving are twin daughters, Kyra Wooley of Virginia Beach and Tyra Wooley of Chesapeake; one son, Tyrone Wooley Jr. of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Joan Dickerson of Axton and Lanita Hodnett of Blairs; three brothers, Himond Benton of Martinsville, Elder James L. Benton of Stuart and William C. Benton of Martinsville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart. Elders Carl Morgan and Manuel Jessup officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart.
MILDRED C. ANDERSON
Mildred Chilton Anderson, 83, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Friday, February 25, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born August 26, 1921 in Surry County, N.C., to the late Reed and Emma Watson Chilton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lassie William Anderson.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Unity Church.
Surviving are two sisters-in-law and 18 nieces and nephews, including Sue Smith of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy with the Rev. Buford Jessup officiating. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.

AGNES C. BELL
Agnes Cox Wilkinson Bell, 95, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on April 26, 1909 to the late King David and Lillie Pilson Cox. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, George E. Wilkinson; her second husband, Robert S. Bell Sr.; three sisters, Thelma Cox Jennings, Mildred Cox Shelton and Hazel Cox Atkinson; and two brothers, Ralph D. Cox and Phillip B. Cox.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Harriet Mitchell of Raleigh, N.C.; a stepson, Robert S. Bell Jr., of Raleigh, N.C.,; a sister, Winifred Cox Roberson of Stuart; a sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the eulogy by Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, president of Ferrum College. Interment will be in the Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum in Charlotte, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

DORIS C. CECIL
Doris Cooper Cecil, 90, of Cecil Lane, Patrick Springs, died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart where she had resided for the past nine years.
She was born in Patrick County on June 10, 1914 and was a daughter of the late James Sterling Cooper and Minnie Florence Cummings Cooper. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Lee Cecil, in 1996; a great-grandson, Jacob Lee Wyatt; six sisters, Mabel Ingram, Lena Cassell, Ocie Pratt, Edna Smith Hill, Ellen Hill and Evelyn Handy; and two brothers, Jesse J. Cooper and Fred Woodson Cooper.
She was a homemaker and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. She had lived in Patrick County for her entire life.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice Wyatt of Patrick Springs, Ramona Cassady of Spencer and Rose Howell of Collinsville; one son, Kelly Dale Cecil of Patrick Springs; one sister, Irene C. Wyatt of Patrick Springs; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Rev. Billy J. Dixon officiating. Burial will be in the Critz Baptist Church cemetery.

Georgia Louise Eaton Edwards, 72, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at her home.
She was born October 5, 1932 in Patrick County to the late Roy and Vera Bowman Eaton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe E. "Bud" Edwards; a son, Barry Scott Edwards; and a sister, Betty Johnson.
She was retired from Proctor-Silex, Inc., and was a member of Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Kathy Handy of Stuart, Susan Shelton of Ararat, N.C., and Anita Linville of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Anthony Edwards of Rural Hall, N.C.; three sisters, Jean Young of Ararat, Janice Collins of Winston-Salem and Eva Wyatt of Reidsville, N.C.; six brothers, Roger Eaton of Tobaccoville, N.C., Roscoe Eaton of Stuart, Noel Eaton of Ararat, Clayton Eaton of King, N.C., Dillard Eaton of Dobson, N.C., and Terry Eaton of Mount Airy; and six grandchildren.

LARRY R. HUGHES
Larry R. Hughes, 44, of Chestnut St., Stuart, died Saturday, February 26, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on October 5, 1960 to Dewey R. Hughes and Margaret Ann Hughes of Stuart. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Johnny and Myrtle Spence Rogers and Hampton Hughes and Annie Hughes Harris.
He was a graduate of Patrick County High School and was employed by Sara Lee in Woolwine.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one son, Adam Hughes of Martinsville; one sister, Marie Scott of Stuart; two brothers, James H. Hughes of Annapolis, Md., and Steve Hughes of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Curtis Hall officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
ROBERT L. MONTGOMERY
Robert Lee Montgomery, 86, of Magnolia, N.C., died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Wake Medical Heart Center in Raleigh, N.C.
He was born August 31, 1918 in Ararat to the late Claude W. and Rebecca Bowman Montgomery. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Montgomery; two sisters, Millie Montgomery and Alma Griffin; and a son-in-law, Dr. Oakie Newsome.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II in Rhineland Central Europe with the 406th Infantry, leaving with a rank of Technician 4. He also worked for Glen L. Martin Airplanes as a mechanic, building and restoring airplanes during the war.
He trained further with Chrysler Corporation in Flint, Mich., before working for Lawrence Motors in Richmond. Montgomery worked on the Norfolk Naval Base in the public transportation department, retiring after 20 years. He won many awards through his work with Chrysler Corporation and Norfolk Naval Base. He was the owner of Bob's V.W. Garage.
Surviving are his wife, Fannie Powell Harris Montgomery of the home; one daughter, Patsy Montgomery Newsome of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Gates Montgomery of Ararat; two sisters, Virginia Thompson of Ararat and Mildred Pell of Walkertown; two stepsons, James R. Harris and Melvin "Mel" Harris, both of Warsaw, N.C.; a sister-in-law; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Community Chapel, Community Funeral Home in Warsaw. The Rev. Dale Myers officiated. Burial was in Devotional Gardens in Warsaw.

ALICE N. PILSON
Alice Nolen Pilson, 91, of Newport News, died Friday, February 11, 2005.
She was born in Woolwine, on January 14,1914, to the late Malissie Ellen and Walter Edward Nolen. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Clynda Nolen Ross and Gatha Nolen Frazier, and brothers, Gordon Lee Nolen and Dalton Edward Nolen.
She traveled extensively with her husband while he served in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Murray S. Pilson; two daughters, Annie Pilson and Sue Anderson of Newport News; three sisters, Claris Nolen Roberson of Collinsviile, Clovis Nolen Gooding of Arlington, and Rose Nolen Bryant of Griffin, Ga.; one grandson; one great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral home and graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Arrangements were by Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton.
