ARTHUR WITT
Arthur Witt, 79, of the Brian Center in Eden, N.C., died Saturday, May 14, 2005.
He was born March 24, 1926 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Richard and Susie Hopkins Witt. He was also preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee Witt; and two sisters, Alma Rigney and Nannie Mae Poole.
He retired from the sawmilling business in 1979 and was of the Holiness faith.
Surviving are his wife, Hattie B. Deal Witt of Eden; six daughters, Lula M. Sheckells and Mary "Rickie" Edmunds, both of Eden; Betty S. Holloman of St. Paul's, Shirley T. Pugh of Richmond, Debra J. Dean of Ridgeway and Patricia A. Pruitt of Bassett; four sons, Jerry L. Witt and Ray Witt, both of Eden, Andy E. Witt of Ridgeway and Danny L. Witt of Raeford; two sisters, Gaye Price and Mattie Rigney, both of Eden; one brother, Teamon Witt of Patrick Springs; 31 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at People's Church of the Living God in Bassett with the Rev. Dwayne Pruitt officiating. Burial was in the Deal family cemetery in Patrick County.
Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Services.
DAVID A. BARRY
David A. Barry, 74, of Creasey Chapel Church Rd., Stuart, died Monday, March 14, 2005, in Florida.
He was born on October 31, 1930 in Newark, N.J., to the late David J. and Lillian Holsman Barry.
He was a regular patron of Stateline Grocery.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce D. Barry of the home; one daughter, Jayne Barry; one son, Donald Barry; one sister, Lillian Welch, all of New Jersey; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 28, at the David and Joyce Barry property in the Five Forks area. The Rev. Jim Churchwell will officiate.
Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
THELMA R. COOK
Thelma Ruth Rakes Cook, 82, of Patrick Springs, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Dante on July 22, 1922 and was a daughter of the late Charlie Reed and Fannie Ellen Vipperman Rakes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Cook; a son, Charles Hays Cook; and three brothers, James Rakes, Lawrence Rakes and Virgil Rakes.
She was retired from the nursing profession and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving are two sisters, Delma Farr of Harper, W.Va., and Naomi Pantels of Winchester.
A graveside service was conducted Sunday at the Elamsville Primitive Baptist Church cemetery by Elders Ken Hopkins and Cletus Turner.
Pallbearers were David Farr, Matthew Haas, Ernest Haas, Gary Altice, Jeff Spille and David Davis.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
GEORGE B. HANDY
George Bruce Handy, 70, of Moorefield Store Rd., Stuart, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County March 17, 1935 to the late Clinton and Ethel Rogers Handy. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Handy, and a brother, Clinton Handy.
He retired from the Carnation Milk Plant and United Elastic Corporation, and was a self-employed farmer. For over 20 years he coached the Virginia-Carolina Little League and the Colt League teams. He was a member of Critz Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Roark Handy of the home; two sons, Wendell Handy of Stuart and Timmy Handy of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Pauline H. Grady of Martinsville and Vera H. Golden of Mount Airy, N.C.; two brothers, Leon Handy of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Glen Handy of Ridgeway; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Adam Woods officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bill Deatherage, Calvin Shockley, Bill Gunter, Sherman Hubbard, Charles Hylton and Karl Weiss.

SUSIE G. HOLT
Susie Gammons Holt, 88, of Pinnacle, N.C., died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on March 16, 1917 to the late Anderson "Ance" Jackson and Mary Alice Bowman Gammons. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Holt; a son, David W. Holt; a daughter-in-law, Betty Jo Holt Puckett; three sisters and three brothers.
Surviving are six daughters, Mary Martin of Pfafftown, N.C., Mae Whitt of Mount Airy, N.C., Alice Hawks of Dobson, N.C., Betty Corns of Mount Airy, N.C., Shirley Marion of Lowgap, N.C., and Sally Beverly of Mount Airy; five sons, Junior Holt of Mount Airy, Ernest Holt of Cana, Rodger Holt of Stoneville, N.C., Ronnie Holt of Pinnacle and Jessie Wayne Holt of Cana; one sister, Viola Hill of Spencer; two brothers, Richard Gammons of Reidsville, N.C., and Alfred Gammons of Mount Airy; 43 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 12, at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Clarence Bowman, Jerry Cox and John Calhoun officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
FRANKLIN D. MABE
Franklin Donald Mabe, 58, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, May 15, 2005, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
He was born in Carroll County on February 23, 1947 to the late Freddie Marion Mabe and Virginia Lucy Goad Mabe Millard. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Roberts and Annie Mae Venable.
Surviving are his wife, Celia Jones Mabe of the home; two daughters, Tina Ann Holt of Mount Airy and Melissa Dawn Holder of Ararat; one son, James Robert Mabe of Lowgap, N.C.; two sisters, Bobbie Ann Payne and Dorothy Easter, both of Mount Airy; three brothers, Roger Millard of Ararat, and Freddie Mabe Jr. and Ronnie Mabe, both of Florida; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 18, at Highland Park Baptist Church by Bobby Holder. Burial was in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

HERBERT C. MARSH
Herbert Crawley "Jack" Marsh, 81, of Westfield, N.C., died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at his home.
He was born May 10, 1924 in Surry County, N.C., and was a son of the late Marvin Marsh and Margaret Marsh Moser. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Iris Goins Marsh; a son, Larry Marsh; a brother, Roma Marsh; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in World War II. He was retired from Hanes Knitting and was a member of Friendly Chapel Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Linda Smith of Danbury, N.C., Brenda Dalton of Stuart, Nelta Sisk of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Sue Sisk of Pinnacle, N.C.; one son, Carlos Marsh of Westfield; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Friendly Chapel Church with Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

GRACIE K. MARTIN
Gracie Kendrick Martin, 70, of Evergreen Drive, Spencer, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville.
She was born in Patrick County on December 15, 1934 to the late Johnny and Bertha Fulcher Kendrick. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Jackson Martin, in 1989; a daughter, Kimberly M. Williams; a sister, Gladys Kendrick; and two brothers, Roger and Billy Kendrick.
She was retired from Central Storage in Martinsville and was a member of Critz Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Charlie L. Martin of Kernersville, N.C., and Nathan D. Martin and Allen J. Martin, both of Spencer; five sisters, Betty Fain of Stuart, Leslie Trent and Frances Williams, both of Critz, and Freda Handy and Louise Martin, both of Martinsville; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services. The Revs. Cletus Lackey and Sammy Caldwell officiated. Burial was in the Critz Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charlie L. Martin, Charlie L. Martin Jr., Nathan Martin and Allen Martin.
CHERYL D. PLASTERS
Cheryl Dillon Plasters, 46, of Providence Drive, Patrick Springs, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Hwy. 58 near Patrick Springs.
She was born on December 2, 1958 in Henry County and was a daughter of Claudia Layman Dillon of Patrick Springs and the late Bobby Dillon.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Tony M. Plasters of the home; one son, Zachary C. Plasters of Emporia; and one brother, Jeral Dillon of Patrick Springs.
She was a graduate of Stafford County High School and attended Virginia and Patrick Henry Community Colleges. She worked as an accountant and was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
A memorial service was held Sunday evening at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor David Westmoreland officiating.
R. GREELY RORRER
Robert Greely Rorrer, 84, of Patrick Springs, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart, after a brief illness.
He was born October 24, 1920 in Charleston, W.Va., and was a son of the late Elijah and Fannie Frances Hopkins Rorrer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Cruise Rorrer, in 1990; an infant daughter, four brothers, Amos Rorrer, Cephus Rorrer, Eugene Rorrer and Jewell Rorrer; a half-brother, Neal Stone; and an infant sister, Dorothy Rorrer.
He served in the U.S. Army as a chemical engineer in World War II and fought in the invasion of Normandy (D-Day) and the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed by V.R. Williams for many years and retired in 1983 from East Hampton Rubber Thread after 20 years of service
Rorrer was a member of Stella Christian Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7800.
Surviving are one daughter, Nora Frances Rorrer; two sons, James Samuel Rorrer and Robert Allen (Bobby) Rorrer and wife Donna, all of Patrick Springs; one brother, Frank McCoy Rorrer of Bassett; one grandson, Jared Dwayne Rorrer of Pensacola, Fla.; one granddaughter, Angela Denise Rorrer of Patrick Springs; two sisters-in-law, Lonie Bryant Rorrer of Woolwine and Lisa Stone of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a special friend, Margaret Nester of the Landmark Center, Stuart.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Steve Hayes, pastor of Stella Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Allen-Bowling-Cruise cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard.

CHARLES J. SHEPPARD
Charles Jordan Sheppard, 101, died Thursday, May 19, 2005 at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on January 10, 1904 and was a son of the late Joel and Sallie Ann Clark Sheppard. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Norilla Lawson Sheppard.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was one of the oldest members of Stuart Baptist Church. He was a partner in Sheppards' Mill and worked for Alexander's Grocery Store.
Surviving are one stepson, Jimmy Lawson of Danville; one sister, Ruth Palmer of Salem; one brother, Clyde Sheppard of Fayetteville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial was in the Stuart Cemetery.
FRANCES H. SMITH
Frances Handy Smith, 61, of Rocky Mount, N.C. died Sunday, May 22, 2005.
She was born May 11, 1944 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Sam and Elizabeth Handy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jay Smith.
Surviving are three sons, Carl Smith, Joe Smith and Ralph Smith, all of Rocky Mount; three brothers, Cecil Handy of Stuart, Steve Handy of Ruffin, N.C., and Jim Handy of Baton Rouge, La.; three sisters, Cassie "Mae" Cockram of Bassett, Virginia Cockram and Leonia Goad, both of Patrick Springs; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mary Horner Walker Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ann Baines officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Norman Cockram, Shady Brook Lane, Patrick Springs.

CLARENCE W. SPENCE
Clarence William "Pete" Spence, 67, of Mount Airy, N.C, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on December 24, 1937 and was a son of the late Marvin U. and Annie Light Spence. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. J.C. Spence, Curtis Spence and Herbert Spence.
Surviving are two daughters, Frances Spence and Stephanie Spence Lapena of Imperial County, Calif.; eight sons, Clarence Spence Jr., Freddie Spence, Hollis Spence, John Spence, Michael Spence, Joe Spence, Mark Spence and Pedro Spence, all of Imperial County; five sisters, Evelyn Mitchell of Collinsville, Margaret Incognito of Poway, Calif., Juanita Balas of Clovis, Calif., Faye Bowman of Patrick Springs and Barbara Roberts of Stuart; four brothers, James Spence of Stuart, Clyde Spence of Brawley, Calif., Patrick Spence of Woolwine and Gary Spence of Biloxi, Miss.; and 26 grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Howell Funeral Home chapel in Stuart by the Rev. Jack Foley. Burial was in the Hughes-Lawson family cemetery.
ZORA J. BROWN
Zora Elizabeth "Dodie" Joyce Brown, 79, of Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Stuart, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born December 28, 1925 in Stoneville, N.C., to the late Louie Thomas Joyce and Jessie Mae Martin Joyce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Henry Brown; a daughter, Betty Jean Brown; three sisters, Myrtle Lester, Pauline Stewart and Frances Anderson; and a brother, James Joyce.
She retired from Ridgeway Clock after 30 years of service and attended Christian View Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Vickie McNeely and Bonnie Lawrence, both of Martinsville; four sisters, Bess Craddock, Eva Chambers and Lena Priddy, all of Eden, N.C.; and Hortense Bullins of Ridgeway; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.

HARVEY W. JOYCE III
Harvey Webster (Wes) Joyce III, 18, of Bassett, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born on October 8, 1986 in Henry County and was a son of Harvey Webster (Sonny) Joyce Jr. and Sharon Lawson Joyce of Bassett.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James E. Lawson Sr.
He attended Bassett High School and was a member of Orchard Drive Baptist Church. He was employed by Jimmy's Retreading Service in Collinsville.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one sister, Megan Joyce of the home; his grandmother, Betty R. Lawson of Ridgeway; and his grandparents, Harvey W. Lawson Sr. and Mary A. Joyce of Bassett.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Collins Funeral chapel with the Rev. Michael Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
