SUE CAMPBELL
Sue Campbell, 76, of Martinsville, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at her home.
She was born May 18, 1929, in Patrick County, to the late Reid and Bessie Bateman Hill. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Martin; her second husband, Wilbur Campbell; a sister, Ruby Hill; and six brothers, Norman Hill, Shirley Hill, Wayne Hill, Bob Hill, Lloyd Hill and Odell Hill.
She was retired from DuPont with over 25 years service and was a member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church, the Bessie Barker Sunday school class and Woodmen of the World.
Surviving are one daughter, Lynn Lawson of Martinsville; one son, Bradley Martin, of Martinsville; four sisters, Iris Hall, Carolyn Blaylock and Glinda Byrd, all of Martinsville, and Faith "Jo" Branstrom of Chicago, Ill.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Lewis Harris and Doug Ramsey officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Gary Bazer, James Mize, Moyer Merriman, Tyler Ratliff, Mark Sparks and Joey Phillips.

EARLY E. COLLINS
Early E. Collins, 81, of Stuart, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County and was a son of the late Elijah and Nannie Lawson Collins. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucella Pack Collins; four sisters, Lottie Gammons, Marie Hooker, Mary Lankford and Martha Hooker; and two brothers, Jim Collins and Troy Collins.
He retired from the Virginia Highway Department with 32 years of service.
Surviving are three sons, James Wesley Collins of Mount Airy, N.C., Douglas Wade Collins of Cana and Ronnie D. Collins of Stuart; one brother, Lee Collins of Stuart; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church. Elder Clarence Bowman and Pastor David Heath officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chris Hooker, Gary Hooker, Chris Collins, Jerry Collins, Justin Collins, Daine Tilley and Scott Griffin.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
DIANE M. COTE
Diane Marie Cote, 46, of Ararat, died June 18, 2005, at her home.
She worked as a packer at Starrett in Mount Airy, N.C.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Cote of the home; one daughter, Brandi Lee Cote of the home; one son, Myles Edward Cote of the home; three sisters, Nancy Lagiminer of Athol, Mass., Sheila Hall of New Hampshire and Kim Cullen of Raleigh, N.C.; and three brothers, Allen Blanchard of South Dakota, Kevin Blanchard of Athol and Roger Blanchard of Shrewsberry, Mass.
Funeral services were held in Massachusetts.

ELTON R. JANNEY
Elton Ray Janney, 78, of Bassett, died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at his home.
He was born July 17, 1926, and was a son of the late Everett Elton and Laura Wyatt Janney. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eva Mize Janney; two sons, Cleveland Janney and Clinton Janney; and a sister, Ada C. Sigmon.
He attended Love of God Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Isaac S. Janney of the home; two sisters, Elsie J. Foley of Martinsville and Virginia J. Harris of Stuart; several grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Brothers Thomas Rutherford and David Freeman officiating. Burial was in Lighthouse Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Randy Sparks, Joe Paling, Bill Greenwale, Tim Lawless and Leon Wright.
JACKSON C. MARTIN SR.
Jackson Curtis "Jack" Martin Sr., 80, of Stuart, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County to Peter and Dovie Wright Martin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Ratliff Martin; a son, Jerry David Martin; and a sister, Bessie Lawson.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from Bassett Fiber Board. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Wanda M. Gallegos and Rita Martin, both of Bassett; four sons, Jackson C. Martin Jr. of Florida, Cecil Martin of Georgia, and William Martin and Richard Martin, both of Patrick Springs; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The funeral were held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. David Bishop officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the John Adams family cemetery.
JERRALD W. MITCHELL
Jerrald William Mitchell, 20, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Thursday, June 23, 2005.
He was born in Surry County, N.C., on May 14, 1985 and was a son of Joel "Joey" Mitchell and Pam Snow Mitchell of Mount Airy.
He was a graduate of Mount Airy High School and was employed by Pike Electric, Inc. He was a member of Believers Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one sister, Maggie Mitchell of the home; his grandparents, James and Elaine Snow of Mount Airy and Jimmy and Cleo Mitchell of Claudville; and his great-grandmother, Annie Frye of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Believers Baptist Church by the Rev. Dewayne Sands. Burial was in the church cemetery.

LOIS L. MORAN
Lois Lawless Moran, 89, of Stanleytown Health Care and formerly of Collinsville, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Stanleytown Health Care.
She was born February 12, 1916, in Patrick County to the late Will A. and Minnie Morrison Lawless. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin A. Moran; a daughter, Barbara M. Peters; four sisters, Mildred M. Holt, Rosabelle M. Howell, Aileen Perdue and Wilma Turner; and two brothers, Leon B. Lawless and Guy Lawless.
Moran was a retired beautician and was a member of First Baptist Church of Collinsville.
Surviving are one sister, Lucy Wood of Martinsville; one brother, David Lawless of Danville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services. The Rev. Carlton McDaniel officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Chuck Peters, David Lawless, Mahlon Harrell, Tony Peters, Mike Peters and Doug Wood.

GARY F. PUCKETT
Gary Franklin Puckett, 44, of Woolwine, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Carroll County on December 8, 1960 and was a son of Sue Dalton of Meadows of Dan and the late Grant Puckett. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Avis Dalton and Woodrow Dalton, and his paternal grandfather, Maynard Puckett.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Brenda Bowers Prillaman Puckett of the home; two sons, Ricky Prillaman and Mickey Prillaman, both of Woolwine; two sisters, Pam Frazier of Willis and Diane Puckett of Meadows of Dan; a half-brother, Duane Dalton of Roanoke; and his paternal grandmother, Larma Puckett of Laurel Fork.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor John Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in the Puckett family cemetery.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
ROBERT D. RIGGS
Robert Dean Riggs, 49, of Martinsville, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born October 2, 1965 in Stuart and was a son of David O'Neal Riggs and Margaret A. Riggs and Virginia Purdy Jefferson and Chester Jefferson, all of Martinsville.
He was a truck driver for Action Performance in Concord, N.C., and was a member of Chatham Heights Christian Church.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are five brothers, Jeff Riggs of Martinsville, Mike Riggs of Stoneville, N.C., Vance Riggs of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Gene Riggs of Roanoke and Sam Riggs of Marion; one stepbrother, Curtis Jefferson of Martinsville; one sister, Rhonda A. Walker of Kernersville, N.C.; and four stepsisters, Lisa Thompson of Fieldale, Debbie Davis of Martinsville, Angie Hatfield of Washington, D.C., and Lorie Wright of Ferrum.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at Chatham Heights Baptist Church by Dr. Mike Hatfield and Minister Alan Vaughan. Burial will be in the Riggs family cemetery in Axton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at Norris Funeral Services.

CLARENCE E. BOYD
Clarence Eldon Boyd, 79, of Mayodan, N.C., died Sunday, July 24, 2005, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
He was born on February 24, 1926 in Patrick County to the late Harry and Manila Boyd. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Portia Hall, and three sisters, Sybil Underwood, Stella Marshall and Paulette Boyd.
He was a retired self-employed brick mason and was a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Martha Puckett Boyd of the home; two daughters, Jill Chatman and Betty Wells, both of Mayodan; one sister, Myrtle Broyles of Roanoke; one brother, Edward Boyd of Stuart; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Ray Funeral Home in Madison, N.C., with Pastor Howard Owens officiating. Burial was in the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.

CHARLES C. COALSON SR.
Charles Camet Coalson Sr., 70, of New Hope Rd., Stuart, died Friday, July 22, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Surry County, N.C., on June 1, 1935 to the late Frank P. and Mary Bobbitt Coalson. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Goldie Bowman Coalson; two brothers, William E. and Arthur Coalson; and two sisters, Edith L. Bobbitt and Sara E. Bush.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of Elamsville Primitive Baptist Church and had been an elder in the Primitive Baptist faith since 1961, ministering in several churches.
Coalson was a charter member of the Ararat Rescue Squad and Fire Department, the Toastmasters Club, and the Willis Gap Community Center, where he also served as president. He had served on the Patrick County Board of Supervisors.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Turner Coalson of the home; two daughters, Deborah Goodrich of Topeka, Kan., and Denise Coalson of Mount Airy, N.C.; one son, Charles Coalson Jr. of Ararat; three stepdaughters, Pamela Young of Ararat, Sandra Spangler of Stuart and Kimberly Smart of Port Richey, Fla.; two stepsons, Michael Smart of Pinnacle, N.C., and Bobby Foster of Stuart; five brothers, Brady Martin Coalson and Rev. Herbert H. Coalson, both of Mount Airy, Harold G. Coalson of Lambsburg, Carroll W. Coalson of Low Gap, N.C., and Estel R. Coalson of Independence; two sisters, Ruby Pauline Bobbitt of Independence and Mary Ivey of Newbern, N.C.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and six stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with Elder Ken Hopkins officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the Turner family cemetery.

Sidney Wayne Cobler, 65, of Martinsville, died Monday, July 25, 2005, at his home.
He was born May 14, 1940 in Franklin County and was a son of Abe Cobler of Martinsville and the late Clara Belcher Cobler. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Diane Craig.
He retired from the maintenance department of Henry County Schools and was a member of Snow Creek Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha Lea Spangler Cobler of the home and formerly of Meadows of Dan; one daughter, Cindy Cobler of Ridgeway; one stepdaughter, Tammy McIntire of Flower Mound, Tex.; two sons, Wayne Cobler of Axton and Charles Cobler of Kansas; one stepson, Jesse Thompson Jr. of Martinsville; two sisters, Nancy Hairfield of Martinsville and Lola Keatts of Penhook; one brother, Kenny Cobler of Rocky Mount; eight grandchildren; two stepgranddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services chapel by Minister Berlin Hanks. The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church cemetery at Meadows of Dan on Thursday, July 28, at 2 p.m.

Richard Gary Gunter, 60, of Shingle Shop Rd., Stuart, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on January 8, 1945 to the late James Richard and Lelia Collins Gunter. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Stafford Gunter.
He was a member of Conner's View Primitive Baptist Church and was retired from J.P. Stevens.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Cruise Gunter of the home; one daughter, Kimberly Phillips and husband Johnathan of Martinsville; two sons, Brad Gunter of Springfield, Ill., and Gary Wayne Gunter and wife Kathy of Mount Airy, N.C.; two brothers, Winfred Gunter of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Milton Gunter of Danbury, N.C.; three sisters, Anna Nichols of Ridgeway, Shirley Custer of Martinsville and Eloise Wade of Martinsville; three grandchildren, Brandi Gunter, John Ainsley Phillips and Claudia Phillips; and two stepgrandchildren, Megan Pillis and Matthew Pillis.
Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Edward Bowman officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

LOTTIE G. PURCELL
Lottie G. Purcell, 92, formerly of Log Manor Rd., Spencer, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born September 4, 1912 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Hughes B. and Lucy Vernon Grady. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Burton Purcell; a daughter, Evelyn P. Adams; and a brother, James H. Grady.
She was a member of Stella Christian Church and was a homemaker and seamstress. She was a cook at Jinx' Restaurant for many years.
Surviving are one son, Larry Burton Purcell of Stuart; one sister, Pearl G. Richardson of Axton; one brother, Frank B. Grady of Spencer; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Stella Christian Church by Ministers Thomas Joyce and Milfred Hudson.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.
