FRANKLIN D. HOWELL
Franklin Delane "Henry" Howell, 65, of Vesta, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on November 24, 1940 and was a son of the late Tom and Jenny Hooker Howell. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Delcie Goad and Lois Hamm; and four brothers, Coy Howell, Curtis Howell, Junior Howell and Clyde Howell. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Dorothy Thompson Howell of the home; two daughters, Audrey Goad of Floyd and Annette Howell of Mount Airy, N.C.; two sons, Keith Howell of Vesta and Frank Howell of Floyd; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart by the Revs. Shirley Leath and Cecil Wayne Brown. Burial was in the Hooker family cemetery. AMERICA M. HYLTON
America Melinda Martin Hylton, 82, of A.L. Philpott Hwy., Spencer, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at Chippenham and Johnston Willis Medical Center in Richmond. She was born in Patrick County on April 29, 1923 and was a daughter of the late John Sherman and Blanche Scales Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David Bill Hylton. She was employed by Standard Garment as a seamstress and also worked at American Furniture before retiring. She was mother of both Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church and Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist Church. She was a member of the Horsepasture Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Hylton of Richmond; one son, William David Hylton of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Benjamin Martin of Spencer; three grandchildren and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Joseph Scales and Walter Scales. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Reed Jr., Richard Martin, James Martin, Fred Martin, Orlando Martin and Isaiah Martin.
ELLEN R. HYLTON
Ellen Rakes Hylton, 59, of Bassett, died Saturday, December 3, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Richmond on September 21, 1946 and was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Rakes and Lucy Mae Smith Rakes. She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael C. Coffman. She was a graduate of Virginia Western Community College and Radford University where she received a degree in social services. She was employed by Martinsville and Henry County Social Services and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bassett.
Surviving are two daughters, Tamara H. Hartl of Yoakum, Tex. and Amanda H. Bryant of Floyd; three sons, Timothy Erik Hylton of Bassett, Jeffrey Ian Hylton of Waynesboro and Matthew Ralph Hylton of Woolwine; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with President Archie Shelton and Elders Russell Shockley and Clarence Hodnett officiating. Burial was in Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd. Pallbearers were Chris Hoff, Charles Sechrist, Russell Shockley, Archie Shelton and Joey Tawney.
MARGARET S. JOHNSON
Margaret Spencer Johnson, 84, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Monday, November 28, 2005. She was born in Henry County on October 22, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Robinson and Sophia Penn Johnson. She was a member of Stateline Primitive Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Burton Spencer of West Virginia; three daughters, Eva King of Winston-Salem, Nancy Trigg of Detroit, Mich., and Margaret Reynolds of Patrick Springs; and several grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Thursday at the Johnson family cemetery in Patrick Springs.
MINNIE E. LACKEY
Minnie Elva Lackey, 92, of Spencer, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at her home. She was born in Elamsville on February 20, 1913, to the late John and Estelle Thomas Lackey. She worked at Dan River Mills.
Surviving are one sister, Bessie Kuczinski of Spencer; and one brother, Evon R. Lackey of Spencer.
A private funeral service will be held for the family with Daryl B. Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
ELOISE S. NEAL
Eloise Shelor Neal, 81, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at her home. She was born in Patrick County on October 14, 1924 and was a daughter of the late Ellis and Mattie Webb Shelor. She was also preceded in death by a sister and five brothers. She was a retired nursing educator and was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Erdman Neal of the home; two sons, Gary Neal of King, N.C. and Phillip Neal of Liberty, N.C.; two brothers, Burton Shelor of Rustburg and Lester Shelor of Meadows of Dan; three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

JAMES L. TILLEY
James Leonard Tilley, 90, of Fieldale, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at Wright Adult Home. He was born in Patrick County on September 1, 1915, to the late William Arthur and Martha Martin Tilley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eula Rakes Tilley; a sister, Louise Tilley Sapp; and two brothers, Russell Tilley and Clyde Tilley. He served in the U.S. Army with the rank of technician fourth grade in the 32nd Division serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was retired from Fieldcrest Mills and was a member of the Fieldale Lions Club, American Legion Bassett Post 11, VFW Post 463 and Fieldale Baptist Church. He was the Legionnaire of the Year in 1984.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda T. Price of Bassett and Judy T. Capito of Naples, Fla.; two brothers, Richard Tilley and Perry Tilley, both of Collinsville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

JEFFERY A. WALLACE
Jeffery Allan Wallace, 39, of Ridgeway, died Sunday, December 4, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born October 27, 1966 in La Grange, Ind., and was a son of Jerry Arthur Wallace of Goshen, Ind., and Mary Alice Crotts Seafert of Bassett. He was a truck driver for Epes Trucking Co.-GSO.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Rebecca Jean Garten Wallace of the home; one son, Jeffrey Ethan Wallace of the home; one stepson, Eric Vincent Hale of the home; one sister, Tracy Louise Setliff of Woolwine; one brother, Scot Matthew Wallace of Oregon; and his grandmother, Ruth Crotts of Mount Airy, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Collins Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Dan Schelling and David Smith officiating. Burial will be private.
LARRY B. WEST
Larry Bennett West, 48, of Vesta, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on January 5, 1957 and was a son of the late Gildewell Frank and Verna Mae Turman West. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Charles Howard "Pete" Hubbard of Meadows of Dan.

RICHARD A. WILLIAMS
Richard Aaron Williams, 77, of Port Republic, Md., died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on November 26, 1928 to the late Virgil R. and Lowell Conner Williams. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lane C. Williams, Dorn V. Williams and Billy D. Williams. He was president of Williams Lumber Company, Inc.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Peggy Tatum Williams of the home; two sons, Richard Steven Williams of Montross and Michael Keith Williams of Hagerstown, Md.; four brothers, Chris V. Williams, Buddy E. Williams, Mica Williams and Gary C. Williams, all of Stuart; four sisters, Betsy W. Bowling of Stuart, Sue W. Griffith of Boones Mill, Carol W. Vernon of Stuart and Sherry W. Meng of Lexington, S.C.; three grandchildren and six great-granddaughters.

ELREE H. WOOD
Elree Hancock Wood, 92, of Floyd, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005. She was born June 30, 1913 and was a daughter of the late Simon Thomas and Lillie Burgess Hancock. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur B. Wood, in 1981, and seven brothers and sisters. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for 74 years.
Survived are three daughters, Ardena Pratt of Floyd, Gertrude Vipperman and Geneva Belcher, both of Meadows of Dan; one son, Dwight and Sarah Wood of Floyd; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd with Elders Edward Bowman, Donnie Conner and Tim McGrady officiating. Burial was in the Wood family cemetery.

EVELYN M. ALLISON
Evelyn Mickens Allison, 89, of Ferrum died Friday, December 17, 2005 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born March 1, 1916 and was a daughter of the late Elmer and Florence Smith Mickens. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd F. Allison.
Surviving are one daughter, Wilma Allison of Ferrum (Patrick County); three sisters, Annabell Miller, Harriette Boyer and Dorothy Christi, all of New Jersey; one brother, Gilbert Mickens of New Jersey; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bettie Handy Barrow, 87, of Martinsville, died Thursday, December 15, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born March 14, 1918 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Fernell H. and Arta Overby Handy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Douglas W. Barrow; a sister, Evelyn H. Compton; and four brothers, Ben Handy, Clyde Handy, Herbert Handy and Harry Handy.
She was a member of Highland Baptist Church and was a former member of the SPCA, the Home Demonstration Club and the Garden Club. She was a graduate of Allen's Beauty School.
Surviving are two sons, Carl W. Barrow and Wayne D. Barrow, both of Martinsville; one sister, Janie H. Pauley of Donaldsville, Ga.; one brother, Bernard Handy of Stuart; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Monday at Roselawn Burial Park. The Rev. Tracy Freeman officiated.
Pallbearers were S.T. Fulcher Jr., Phillip Woods, Dale Wilson, Morton Haynes, Gene Lawson and Clyde Harrison.

HAZEL T. BENNETT
Hazel Thompson Bennett, 80, of Concord, died Thursday, December 15, 2005, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born in Lynchburg on February 20, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Herman Conway and Edna Cardwell Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Claude Anderson Bennett, and a sister, Nell T. Tolley.
She was a graduate of Concord High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church and was retired from the Campbell County School System.
Surviving are one son, Kim Anderson Bennett of Concord; four daughters, Claudia Bennett Moore of Forest, Nancy Bennett Helms of Stuart and Vivian Bennett Mitchell of Lynchburg and Cheryl Bennett Guthrie of Concord; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Union Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Cliff Jordan and John Jackson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

William Lloyd Handy, 73, of Meadows of Dan, died Sunday, December 18, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on January 31, 1932 and was a son of the late Robert Ernest and India Augusta Williams Handy. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Julia Dillon Handy; three sisters, Ruby Handy Shelton, Birdie Handy Hughes and Lucy Handy Lawson; and three brothers, Lewis Handy, Winfred Handy and Clayton Handy.
He was of the Baptist faith. His caretaker was his daughter-in-law, Kelly Handy.
Surviving are one son, Benny Handy of Fancy Gap; one daughter, Tina Shelton of Stuart; one stepson, Wendell Alderman of Meadows of Dan; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 23 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Rev. Jim Churchwell will officiate.

Foliage Clifton Pack, 62, of Ike Slate Lane, Ararat, died Thursday, December 15, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born on April 24, 1943 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Jim and Wavie Ada Pack. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Frances Fariss, Emma Jean Jessup, Ola McCormick and infant sister, Sadie Pack; and four brothers, Sanford Pack, Falis Pack, Tommy Pack and an infant brother, Riley Pack.
He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving are two sisters, Bessie Horton of Claudville and Dora Bowman of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; and one brother, Curtis Pack of Advance, N.C.
A graveside service was held Saturday at the Pack family cemetery in Ararat.
NANCY R. SMITH
Nancy Roberson Smith, 78, of Horsepasture, died December 14, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on September 16, 1927, to the late James Lester Roberson and Maude Ingram Roberson. She was also preceded in death by a son, William C. Smith III.
She was a member of Horsepasture Christian Church, her Sunday school class and book club.
Surviving are her husband, William C. "Bill" Smith Jr. of the home; three daughters, Martha Anderson of Roanoke, Sue Hane of Raleigh, N.C. and Lee Robison of Roanoke; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Horsepasture Christian Church. Minister David Cuthbertson, Dr. David Eubanks and Bob McGuire officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

JAMES STAPLES
James (J.J.) Staples, 53, of Stuart, died Friday, December 16, 2005, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born on September 23, 1952 in Patrick County and was a son of John Jackson Staples of Stuart and the late Mary Rucker Staples. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George Otis Staples and John Staples.
He was retired from Stuart Flooring and also worked at United Elastic Corporation and Stop 8 Convenience Store. He graduated from Patrick County High School and attended Patrick Henry Community College.
Staples was a lifetime member of the Stuart Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Stuart Town Council, the Patrick County Jaycees and the Stuart Lions Club. He served on the board of directors for the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce and was a camping coordinator for the Patrick County Beach Music Festival.
He was a past member of the American Red Cross and was a cameraman for the First Christian Church's programs.
Surviving are three sisters, Ollie Spencer of Martinsville, Lucy Moore of Stuart and Marjorie Nowlin of Patrick Springs; and one brother, Henry Staples of Stuart.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart by Dr. Roger Hagwood. Burial was in the Loggins family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Alfred Brammer, Chris Corbett, Wayne Craig, Stanley Fain, William Hines, Alfred Martin, Richard Puckett, Terry Tilley, Travis Nowlin and Keith Staples.
