MELVIN A. THOMAS
Melvin Alba Thomas, 83, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday, December 17, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
He was born November 17, 1922 in Patrick County to the late Posey L. and Rosie Lillie Smart Thomas. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Vernice Rakes and Verda Hall.
He was served in the U.S. Army/Air Force during World War II and was a member of VFW Post 8467 in Meadows of Dan. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Surviving are two sisters, Vera Thomas of Meadows of Dan and Pernie Bowman of Dry Fork, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Moody Funeral Home chapel. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the Laurel Fork Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Members of the honor guard served as pallbearers.

AMOS BELCHER
Amos "Bud" Belcher, 79, of Millhouse Rd., Stuart, died Monday, December 26, 2005, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on November 8, 1926 to the late Dennie O. and Lala Dalton Belcher. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Archie Belcher, Arthur Pete Belcher and Luther Ray Belcher; and two sisters, Lena Hayden and Edna Pendleton.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Delcie Rorrer Belcher of the home; one daughter, Janis Spence of Stuart; one sister, Hollis Belcher of Stuart; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 29, at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with Elder Edward Bowman officiating. Burial was in Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Haden, Delano Pendleton, David Haden, W.C. Haden, Dean Belcher and Willie Haden.

J. CLAYTON BOAZ
James Clayton Boaz, 85, of Stuart and formerly of Bassett, died Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on January 3, 1919 and was a son of the late William and Minnie Frye Boaz. He was also preceded in death by six sisters, Hester Tatum, Ollie Adams, Hazel Harbour, Lucy Nance, Mollie Johnson and Beth Gilley; and three brothers, Raymond Boaz, Herbert Boaz and Robert Boaz.
He was a life-long member of Stuart Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Boaz served as the mayor of Stuart during the 1970s and formerly co-owned and managed The Enterprise. While he was with the newspaper, he was married to Mable Gray Rodgers who died in 1997.
Surviving are one son, James Boaz of Penhook, and a grandson.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, at the Bassett Funeral Services chapel with the Revs. Dwayne Pruitt and Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Hermon Church of the Brethren cemetery.

ROBERT C. BOAZ
Robert Clyde "Buck" Boaz, 89, of Stuart, died Saturday, December 24, 2005, at Beth Sholom Nursing Home in Richmond.
He was born August 30, 1916 in Stuart and was the seventh of eight children of the late James Robert and Kate Gilley Boaz.
He was educated in Patrick County schools, the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, and Scranton Lackanna College in Scranton, N.J.
Boaz served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the Quartermaster Corps and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, then transferred to the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater of the war and was stationed in Calcutta, India.
Prior to and after serving in the Army he worked as an accountant for E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co. in New Jersey and Virginia.
He became a partner in Hudson's Drug Store in Stuart in 1946 and worked there until the store closed in 2001.
Boaz was a charter member of the Patrick County Jaycees and was a charter member and past president of Stuart Lions Club. He served as a member of the board of directors and treasurer of R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital and was a member of American Legion Post 105.
He was a past president of the Stuart P.T.A. and the Patrick County United Fund, and also served as chairman of the Patrick County Heart Fund. He was a member and past master of Mountain Home Lodge #263, A.F. and A.M., was a past district deputy of the 39th Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of Virginia and was a 32 degree Mason and member of the Danville Chapter of the Scottish Rite. He was a member and past patron of Stuart Chapter #25, Order of Eastern Star.
Boaz was a member and past chairman of the Patrick County Democratic Party and was a member of the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Virginia. He was a member of Stuart United Methodist Church where he served as a teacher and superintendent of the church school and as a member and chairman of the church administrative board. He also served as the church lay leader. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Clara Pinckard Boaz of Stuart and Beth Sholom Home in Richmond; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Boaz Baron and husband Bruce of Richmond; and one grandson, John Robert Whitley of Richmond and Boone, N.C.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 28, at Stuart United Methodist Church by Dr. Clyde DeLoach. Burial, with Masonic rites by Mountain Home Lodge No. 263, was in Stuart Cemetery. The flag presentation was by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard.
Members of the lodge served as pallbearers.

R. DOUGLAS CASSADY
Russell Douglas "Doug" Cassady, 80, of Dangler Mountain Rd., Stuart, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on July 29, 1925 to the late Will and Betty Joyce Cassady. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Bullins, Mae Rogers and Covie Holt; and two brothers, Coy Cassady and Joel Cassady.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Crystal "Tootsie" Holt Cassady; five daughters, Brenda Conner of Patrick Springs, Becky Barnes of Stoneville, N.C., Bonnie Goad of Stuart, Amy Taylor of Bassett and Ann Wood of Stuart; two sons, Clarence Cassady of Martinsville and Paul Cassady of Claudville; nine grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Friday, December 23, at Patrick Memorial Gardens.

JAMES S. CLARK
James Stacy Clark, 34, of Linden, Tenn., and formerly of Martinsville, died Thursday, December 22, 2005, at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia, Tenn.
He was born in Martinsville on February 13, 1971 and was a son of the late James Thomas Clark and Barbara Roberts Clark. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ginger Shrader.
He attended Freedom Baptist Church and was a supervisor with the Greene Company in Martinsville. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School.
Surviving are his wife, Tammy Barbour Clark of the home; one daughter, Cesalea Danielle Clark of Stoneville, N.C.; one son, James Michael Clark of Stoneville, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Chasity Nicole Thomas of Stuart; one sister, Debi Elizabeth Locklear of Savannah, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 27, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Doug Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Stateline Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Shane Taylor, Gary Locklear, Randy Young, Sam Rakes, Scott Spencer, Lee Spencer and Micah Rakes.

MARY M. CLARK
Mary Magdalene "Maggie" Clark, 89, of Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville and formerly of Patrick County, died Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born March 31, 1916 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Robert and Jennie Mae Foley Shough. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Talton Brown Clark; two sons, Robert F. Clark and Milton Lee Clark; three sisters, Maude S. Rakes, Ada S. Smith and Emma S. Clark; and six brothers, Sam Shough, William Shough, Sherman Shough, Jacob Shough, Thomas Shough and John Shough.
Surviving are one son, Leonard Clark of Oak Level; one brother, Warren Shough of Woolwine; and two sisters, Lucy Clark of Charity and Agnes Haynes of Sanville.
A graveside service was held Friday, December 23, at the Rakes/Foley cemetery. The Rev. Bobby Rakes officiated.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
CHANNIE W. CROTTS
Channie Era Wood Crotts, 90, of Stuart, died Sunday, December 25, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on August 18, 1915 to the late John Lewis Wood and Flora Della Hall Wood. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robey V. Crotts; two sisters, Dossie Foley and Pansy Wood; and a brother, Zenas Wood.
She was a member of New Hope Church of the Brethren where she sang in the choir, was a Bible School helper and quilted with the ladies of the church. She worked at Bassett Mirror and quilted at the Fairystone Volunteer Fire Department where she was a member of the ladies' auxiliary and was voted member of the year in 1998.
Surviving are one daughter, Sylvia Youngblood of Stuart; two sons, Johnnie Clinton Crotts of Vero Beach, Fla. and Gary Robey Crotts of High Point, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 29, at New Hope Church of the Brethren with Pastors Rick Randall and Danny Gilley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were J.T. Foley, Larry Crotts, Donnie Wood, Ronnie Haynes, Elmo Chaney, James Foley, Teddy Lawless and Dean Wood.

ELLEN S. FLOYD
Ellen Sue Floyd, 93, of Martinsville, died Sunday, December 25, 2005, at her home.
She was born May 16, 1912 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Samuel Arthur and Martha Wimbish Newman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John F. Floyd Jr.; three sisters, Una Mae Walker, Grace N. Smith and Catherine "Kitty" Engle; and two brothers, Eldon L. Newman and Claude B. Newman.
She and her husband owned and operated Floyd's Cash Store for 18 years until 1961. She later worked at Globman's Department Store and retired with 25 years of service.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville.
Surviving are two sons, John F. Floyd III of Collinsville and David N. Floyd of Martinsville; one sister, Frances N. Davis of Martinsville; one brother, Dewey Leon Newman of Blacksburg; three grandchildren; one stepgrandson and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services. The Rev. John Fulcher officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ken Engle, Joe Engle, Tom Davis, Robin Davis, Justian Kelly, Stuart Newman, Billy Smith and Dick Jordan.

EDITH B. HANCOCK
Edith Boyd Hancock, 84, of Martinsville, died Saturday, December 31, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Henry County on March 5, 1921, to the late William C. "Bill" Boyd and Flora Wood Boyd. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James L. "Lem" Hancock; a sister, Martha Hundley; and three brothers, Isaac Boyd, John Boyd and Walter Boyd.
She was a homemaker and a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are eight daughters, Thelma Via and Olene Chaney, both of Martinsville; Linda Doss and Peggy Hatcher, both of Fieldale; Maxine Harris and Inez Hancock, both of Martinsville; Bonnie Hall of Stuart and Kathy Reed of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Gaye Rhodes of Fieldale and Pearl Jones of Trinity, N.C.; one brother, Edward Boyd of Martinsville; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Collins Funeral Services with the Rev. Greg Hodges officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
THOMAS D. HARBOUR
Thomas D. Harbour, 89, of Ridgeway, died Saturday, December 31, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born in Patrick County on January 25, 1916, to the late Rev. J.D. Harbour and Victoria Conner Harbour. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Eva Harbour, Bera Hatcher, Mabel Cox and Delois Woody; and three brothers, Howard Harbour, Ralph Harbour and Billy R. Harbour.
He served in the U.S. Army as a master sergeant and in the U.S. Air Force. He was a past member of AM-VETS Post 35 and the Martinsville Moose Lodge. Harbour graduated from Berea Bible College in Berea, Ky., and attended Ferrum College. He was retired from Spectra Freight Lines as a driver with more than 20 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Chategnier Harbour of the home; two daughters, Michelle Harbour Arrington of Martinsville and Barbara Johnson of Bassett; one son, Thomas E. "Tommy" Harbour of Bassett; three sisters, Myrtle Harbour Helms of Ridgeway, Rachael Harbour Starling of Eden, N.C. and Annie Harbour Young of Virginia Beach; two brothers, W.C. Harbour and Bain Harbour, both of Ruffin, N.C.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Community Funeral Services by the Rev. Russell Gresham. Burial, with military rites by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, was in Mountain View Cemetery, Ridgeway.
Pallbearers were Brian Habour, Herbert Hatcher, Lonza Hatcher, Ron Harbour, Neal Harbour and Tom Fain.
L. HAMPTON HUBBARD
Leonard Hampton Hubbard, 70, of Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on July 19, 1935 to the late Charlie Dan and India Mae Wood Hubbard. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Andrew Hubbard, and three infant sisters.
He was a member of Parkway Church of the Brethren and retired as a supervisor from Bassett-Walker/VF Industries with 43 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Iva Jane Belcher Hubbard of the home; one son, Todd Hampton Hubbard and wife Wendy of Suffolk; three grandchildren, Emilyne, Lauren and Caroline Hubbard; four brothers, Luther Hubbard, Eugene Hubbard, Raymond Hubbard and Howard Hubbard, all of Meadows of Dan; and one sister, Lelia Hubbard of Ferrum.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 31, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart by Pastors Danny Gilley and Terry Martin. Burial was in the Hubbard family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Leon Rhodes, Troy Wood, Coby Hubbard, Jarett Hubbard, Dale Belcher, Delmar Belcher, Roger Belcher, Bradley Hubbard, Danny Hubbard, Larry Taylor, Jeff Belcher and Gary Belcher.

ALICE R. BRIM
Alice Ruth Brim, 77, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy.
She was born August 30, 1928 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late John Meiggs and Nannie Alice Anderson Brim. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Timmons and Rachel Surber, and four brothers, Warren Brim, David Meiggs Brim, Wayne Louis Brim and Thomas Brim.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are one brother, Bruce Brim of Mount Airy; one niece; three nephews and several cousins.
A graveside service was held Saturday at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Sparks officiating.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
GLADYS F. BURKINS
Gladys Foley Burkins of Parkville, Md., and formerly of Patrick County, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Burkins.
Surviving are her children, Lawrence E. Burkins, Beryl B. Atchley, Kathy L. McKeown and W. Rodger Burkins; one sister, Juanita Burmeister of Stuart; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at Johnson Funeral Home in Baltimore, Md. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Park.
