ALVESTA MASSEY
Alvesta "Al" Massey Sr., 69, of First Southern Drive, Patrick Springs, died Thursday, December 28, 2006, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Cascade on February 7, 1937 and was a son of the late Charlie and Sarah Jane Justice Massey. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Massey and Bill Massey.
He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co., Inc., with over 30 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Spence Massey of the home; one daughter, Betty Jane Freeman of Patrick Springs; two stepdaughters, Wanda Wood of Woolwine and Tammy Sue Baliles of Patrick Springs; one son, Alvesta "Al" Massey Jr. of Lake Michigan; two brothers, Tom Massey of Salisbury, N.C., and George Massey of Patrick Springs; five grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 31, 2006, at Howell Funeral Home chapel. The Revs. J.R. Vipperman, Mark Wright and Bernard Handy officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were James Fain, Donnie Freeman, Justin Freeman, Guy Wood, Blake Baliles, Junior Spence, Bob Massey and Raymond Spence.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home in Patrick Springs.
ROY MOYER JR.
Roy Moyer Jr., 61, of Fieldale, died Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Rockingham County, N.C., and was a son of the late Roy Moyer Sr. and Rosa Moyer.
He attended Upper Room Christian Center.
Surviving are two sisters, Lessie Hairston of Martinsville and Etta Lee Broadnax of Stoneville, N.C.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 31, 2006, at Perry-Spencer Memorial Chapel in Eden, N.C. Burial was in the family cemetery in Stoneville, N.C.
MAE K. BERNARD
Mae "Maebyrd" Kendrick Bernard, 76, of Martinsville, died Friday, May 11, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born May 11, 1931 in Pittsylvania County to the late Tommy and Mary Kendrick. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Leon Rigney; a sister, Nanny Reynolds; and two brothers, William Kendrick and Jimmy Kendrick.
She was a homemaker and member of County Line Christian Church.
Surviving are her husband, Lewis F. Bernard of the home; two daughters, Diane Coward of Leatherwood and Debra Hankins of Ridgeway; five sons, Larry Rigney of Stuart, Roger Rigney of Greensboro, N.C., Dennis Rigney of Axton, Benny Rigney of Piedmont, S.C. and Ricky Rigney of Martinsville; two sisters, Louise Hankins and Mamie Oaks; one brother, Noel Kendrick; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel by Pastor Don Reynolds. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Daniel Morrison, Jimmy Rigney II, Larry Rigney Jr., Johnny Rigney, Benny Rigney Jr., Wallace Herndon Jr. and Shane Epps.
JUNIOR H. BIGGS
Junior Henry Biggs, 75, of Patrick Springs, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center.
He was born September 29, 1931, to Johnny Wesley Biggs and Elsie Greenwood Biggs. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Garland Biggs and Herbert Biggs.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Vera Josephine Biggs of the home; one daughter, Ellen Jackie Walker of Patrick Springs; two brothers, James Richard Biggs of Stuart and Bobby Clinton Biggs of Fitzgerald, Ga.; five sisters, Minnie Catherine Harris of Stuart, Mary Magalene Lewis of Fitzgerald, Easter Myrtle Minter of Martinsville, and Pauline Martin and Faye Pack, both of Patrick Springs; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Bassett Funeral Service South Chapel with the Revs. Phillip Beam and J.D. Walker officiating. Burial will be in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
SHAWN H. HAIRSTON
Shawn Henry Hairston, 35, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, in a North Carolina hospital.
He was born on December 2, 1971 in Patrick County and was a son of Doris Hairston Preston of Martinsville. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Sam Walter Hairston.
He had worked for the Costar Group and was a member of Ridgeway Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his father, William Whitteco Preston Sr. of Martinsville; two brothers, William Preston Jr. and Brushawn Nibblett, both of Martinsville; his grandmothers, Jane B. Hairston of Spencer and Audrey Preston of Martinsville; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held Friday at Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Richard Penn and Colonel Hairston officiating. Burial was in the Hairston family cemetery.
Arrangements were by Howell Funeral Home of Stuart.
GAYE M. HIATT
Gaye Marshall Hiatt, 56, of Ararat, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on April 6, 1951 to the late Andy and Nora Marshall. She was also preceded in death by three brothers.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Marvin Hiatt of the home; one son, Bruce Anthony Brim of Charlotte, N.C.; one stepson, Dwayne Hiatt of Ararat; and two brothers, Clinton Marshall of Reidsville N.C., and Eugene Marshall of Ararat.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., by the Rev. Arlis Thomas. Burial was in the Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Joy Hylton, 61, of Bassett, died Monday, May 14, 2007, at her home.
She was born July 22, 1945 in Martinsville and was the daughter of Christine Lackey Cobbler of Patrick Springs and the late Samuel Morris Cobbler. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Newman.
She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of 28 years, Clyde Hylton of the home; one son, Timothy Martin of Bassett; two daughters, Debbie Gravely of Patrick Springs and Denise Farmer of Bassett; one stepson, Mark Hylton of Rocky Mount; one stepdaughter, Mary Quiroz of Bassett; two brothers, J.T. Cobbler of Bassett and Earl Cobbler of Martinsville; one sister, Mary Wade of Bassett; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Bassett Funeral Service South Chapel by the Rev. John Shelley. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
BESSIE H. MARTIN
Bessie Handy Martin, 74, of Bassett, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007.
She was born in Patrick County on April 1, 1933 and was a daughter of the late Harry Franklin Handy and Lizzie Handy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Delbert Martin; a son, Frankie Lee Pendleton; two brothers, Claude Handy and Clyde "Pete" Handy; and a grandson.
She worked at Bassett-Walker Knitting Co., and attended Orchard Drive Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Roy Ernest Pendleton and Eddie Dean Pendleton, both of Bassett; two daughters, Bessie "Darlene" Eanes of Ridgeway and Tina Marie Rakes of Bassett; two sisters, Essie Marie Lawless of Stuart and Beatrice Louise Hughes of Meadows of Dan; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the South Chapel at Bassett Funeral Service with Danny Gilley officiating. Burial was in Henry Memorial Park.

JUNE A. REYNOLDS
June A. Reynolds, 79, of Stuart, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at her daughter's home in Gastonia, N.C.
She was born in Atlanta, Ga., on June 5, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Joseph M. (Bud) Abernathy and Matilda Catherine Abernathy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William M. Reynolds; a half-brother, Ronnie Abernathy; and a half-sister, Jenny Abernathy.
She was retired after 45 years of service at Nationwide Insurance Company and was an active member of Risen Lord Catholic Church in Patrick Springs.
Surviving are one son, Ronald S. Adams of Ridgeway; one daughter, Nancy A. Sabol of Gastonia; one brother, Harold R. Abernathy of Fayetteville, Ga.; three half-brothers, Dennis Abernathy, Tony Abernathy and James Abernathy; two half-sisters, Judy Galloway and Debra Crowder; two grandchildren and one niece.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Patrick Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Visitation will follow after the service until 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home in Patrick Springs.
DIRK M. SMART
Dirk Morton Smart, 46, of Spencer, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Radford on November 24, 1960 and was a son of Elzie Smart and Peggy Epperly Smart of Spencer.
He had worked at National Textile in Eden, N.C., for 25 years.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one son, Dirk "D.J." Morton Smart of Spencer; and a daughter, Leighann.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home in Patrick Springs with Kelly Ratcliff officiating. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be for one hour before the service.
FRANK C. SPENCER SR.
Frank Conner Spencer Sr., 86, of Sandy Ridge, N.C., died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on April 29, 1921 and was a son of the late George and Alice Shough Spencer. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Homer Spencer, Raymond Spencer, Richard Spencer, Cecil Spencer, Amos Spencer and James Spencer; and a sister, Louise Hall.
He was a World War II veteran and retired from the Stokes County School System with 39 years of service. He was a charter member of the Northeast Stokes Fire and Rescue, a founding member of the Sandy Ridge Ruritan Club, and was a member and deacon at Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty Ruth Spencer; one son, Frank C. Spencer Jr. of Clemmons, N.C.; one daughter, Ruth S. Conner of Sandy Ridge; one brother, Algie Spencer of Woolwine.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the church cemetery.

RICKY L. TRENT
Ricky Leonard Trent, 51, of Dogwood Rd., Patrick Springs, died Monday, May 14, 2007, at K.B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick Springs on April 21, 1956 and was a son of G. Leonard Trent and Arlene Spencer Trent of Patrick Springs.
He worked as a school bus driver for the Patrick County School System for two years, was a co-owner of Back Porch Grill, and was employed by Fieldcrest Mills for over 20 years. He was a member of JEB Stuart Rescue Squad and was an active member of Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church where he managed the sound system.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Kathy Lucado Trent of the home; two sons, Scott Trent and Brian Trent, both of Patrick Springs; one brother, Bruce Trent of Lubbock, Tex.; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Jack Foley and Trent Wall officiating. Burial will be in Providence United Methodist Church cemetery.
Visitation will be held tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church and at other times at the home.

DOROTHY N. WOOD
Dorothy Nester Wood, 80, of Ridgeway, died Friday, May 11, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born March 30, 1927 in Meadows of Dan to the late Steve and Gladys N. Hylton. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Wood Byrd.
Surviving are one daughter, Deborah Wood Socol of King City, Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren; and a cousin.
A graveside funeral service was held Saturday at Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery in Meadows of Dan with Pastor George Gorman officiating.

NELLIE H. AYERS
Nellie "Irene" Hazelwood Ayers, 93, of the Landmark Center in Stuart and formerly of Ayers Orchard Rd., Stuart, died June 19, 2007.
She was born in Patrick County on October 9, 1913 and was a daughter of the late Tim and Lilla Gunter Hazelwood. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cary Goode Ayers; three brothers, Frank Hazelwood, Thomas Hazelwood and German Hazelwood; and three sisters, Virginia Dalton, Ruth Frazier and Ruby Biggs.
She was a member of Stuart Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Brenda Ayers of Stuart, Walter and Lynn Ayers Stuart, and E.L. and Joyce Ayers of Maggie Valley, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Robin Corns, Tonya Brooks, Lee Ayers, Charles Ayers, Jay Ayers, Walter Ayers Jr. and Parker Ayers; four great-grandchildren, Madison Corns, Hollyn Corns, Leah Brooks and Zoe Ayers; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Jennifer Buzhardt; one stepgreat-great-grandson, Dylan Buzhardt; and three sisters, Georgia Handy of Ridgeway, Peggy Amos of Martinsville, and Kitty Johnson of Richmond.

Eunice Lee Bates, 58, of Chatham Road, Axton, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born on September 27, 1948 in Patrick County, she was the daughter of Beulah Adkins Hughes of Stuart and the late Early Harbour.
She and her husband were owners/operators of Bates Building and Remodeling in Axton.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Henry L. Bates of the home; her stepfather, Gilmer Hughes of Stuart; one daughter, Penny L. Bratton and husband Lucas of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Randy J. Lawless and wife Stephanie of Stuart; one stepson, Ricky L. Bates and wife Cookie of Martinsville; one sister, Linda H. Wade and husband Waitman of Stuart; four grandchildren, Hunter Lawless, Morgan Lawless, Jordan Dalton and Ashley Dalton; two stepgrandchildren, Rick Bates and Sara Bates; three special nephews, Dale Wade, Timothy Wade and Desmond Kendrick and several nieces and nephews.
