MILDRED C. CLARK
Mildred Corns Clark, 95, of Martinsville and formerly of Stuart, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at Stanleytown Health Care Center.
She was born September 21, 1911 in Stokes County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Joe Henry and Fannie Creasey Corns. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Clark; four brothers; Frank Corns, Russell "Buster" Corns, Grover Corns and James "Lummie" Corns; and three sisters; Mervie Smith, Wavie Miller and Agnes Conner.
She and her husband owned and operated Garrett Cleaners in Martinsville. After their retirement they traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada and she was well known as a quilter.
Surviving are one brother, Paul Corns of Stuart; a special relative, Sheila Steele of Greensboro, N.C.; six nieces, Margaret Knight of Clemmons, N.C., Angela Smith of Lawsonville, N.C., Kim Cassell of Martinsville, Elizabeth Berry of Decatur, Ala., and Mary Susan and Wanda; and three nephews, Bruce Corns of Spencer, Billy Corns of Critz, and Jimmy Corns.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Rev. Curtis Hall officiating. Burial was in the Peters Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Stuart Steele, Seth Steele, Denzil Knight, David Smith, John Cassell and Lee Hazelwood.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stanleytown Health Care for all the tender, loving care given to her, especially by Joan. They would also like to thank her doctors; Dr. William Zimmer and Dr. Judith Szulecki for all of their great care. Their warmest thanks go to the best neighbors in the world. ROBERT S. MABE
Robert Steve Mabe, 55, of Walnut Cove, N.C., died unexpectedly Sunday June 24, 2007.
He was born in Patrick County to Robert Dennis and Peggy Lawson Mabe on May 6, 1952. Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Ruth and Oscar Lawson; paternal grandparents, Etta and Lum Mabe; son-in-law, Patrick Goard; brother-in-law, David Southern and his niece, Rebecca Annette Collins.
He was employed for 36 years with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company at the Tobaccoville, N.C., location. He was a faithful member of Gospel Light Baptist Church for 30 years and was very active as an usher, in the bus ministry and going on visitation.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 20 years, Linda Kay McManus Mabe; four children, Phebe Mabe Goard, Jeremiah Nathaniel (Dea) Mabe, Robert Stephen (Angela) Fishel and Stephanie Renee Fishel; four sisters, Beckie Mabe (Kenny) Bullins, Vicky Mabe (Odell) Bullins, Carolyn Southern (Olin) White and Bonnie Mabe and two nephews, Bruce Lee Slate and Dekota Sherman Bullins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gospel Light Baptist Church with the Revs. Bobby Roberson and Frank Shumate officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens Of Memory in Walkertown, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove and other times at the home of Peggy and Dennis Mabe.

Roy Obie Ayers, 78, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, September 30, 2007 at his home.
He was born May 12, 1929 in Patrick County to the late Floyd and Ella Ayers. He was also preceded in death by a son, Obie Lee Ayers; two grandsons, Clayton Junior "Squeaky" McCormick and Roy "Bubba" Ayers; a sister, Claire "Duck" Towe; a brother, Latney Allen; and a half-brother, Michael Ayers. He was self-employed in automobile sales and was of the Baptist faith. Shirley Lou Spittler Carroll, 52, of Floyd, died Thursday, September 27, 2007, at her home.
She was born in Globe, Ariz., on December 13, 1954. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph N. "Joe" Carroll; her father, Paul Eugene Spittler; a sister, Pat Shelby; and a brother, Stanley Spittler. She had been a certified nursing assistant, and was a member of the Topeka Church of the Brethren. Surviving are one daughter, Yolanda Cook of Mason, W.Va.; one son, Billy Joe Westfall of Marion; four stepsons, Shannon Carroll of Georgia, Danny Carroll of Missouri, and David Carroll and Larry Carroll, both of Georgia; three stepdaughters, Kim Carroll, Jennifer Carroll, and Janet Carroll, all of Georgia; 30 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her mother, Opal Heartong Spittler of Globe; two brothers, Curly Spittler and Barry Spittler, both of Globe; one sister, Beanie Reader of Meadows of Dan; and a sister-in-law. Janice Cabble Gallimore, 57, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at the home of her daughter. She was born in Danville on September 8, 1950 and was the daughter of Cabble Turman of Floyd and the late Betty Wade Turman. She had worked at Ethan Allen Furniture in Pulaski and was a member of Evangelistic Tabernacle. Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Gilley of Martinsville and Penny Dodson of Patrick County; one son, Billy Paul Gallimore of Carroll County; two sisters, Joyce Whitebread of Alabama and Donna Goins of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews. Lena Ann Varner Hughes, 80, of Stuart, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007.She was born July 27, 1927 to the late Peter and Hessie Varner. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Howard Elwood Hughes; and a sister, Louise Martin. Surviving are her children, Linda Hughes of Manassas, David Hughes of Palmer, Alaska, and Wayne Hughes of Stuart; three sisters, Edna Terrell of Walnut Cove, N.C., and Annie Gunter and Jean Collins, both of Stuart; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Howell Funeral Home in Patrick Springs by the Revs. Randy Prouse and Billy Dixon. C. Jean Belcher Hylton, 72, of Laurel Fork, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at her home.
She was born on May 2, 1935 in Patrick County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvie Hylton; a daughter, Brenda Faye Hylton; her father, Joseph Arlie Belcher; a brother, Leon Belcher; a sister, Lorna Pauline Belcher; and a daughter-in-law, Emma Jordan Hylton. She was a member of Conner's View Primitive Baptist Church. Guy C. Lawson, 83, of Floyd, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at the New River Valley Medical Center. A native of Patrick County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Turner and Agnes Lawson. Surviving are one brother, John E. Lawson of Roanoke; four sisters, Irene Simpson of Martinsville, Lila Buchanan of Austin, Tex., Wilma Padgett of Baltimore, Md., and Clara Desper of Cloverdale; and 16 nieces and nephews. Rosemary Mooneyham Moore, 65, of Raven Rock Road, Ararat, died Thursday, September 27, 2007, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C. She was born November 21, 1941 in Monroe County, W.Va., and was a daughter of Nellie Watts Appling Wylie of Ararat and the late Claude Wylie. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Mooneyham.
She was employed at First Citizens Bank in Pilot Mountain, N.C., and was a member of Fellowship Church in Ararat. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, the Rev. Charles Russell Moore of the home; daughters and a son-in-law, Andrea Joy Large and husband Jonathan, and Cathy Moore Hobbs, all of Ararat; sons-in-law, Marco Ruscelloni of Miami, Fla., and Ronald Hobbs of Lake Waccamaw, N.C.; five grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Dolores Wylie of White Sulpher Springs, W.Va.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. William Arthur O'Dell, 74, of Patrick Springs, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Stanley O'Dell; his parents, William McKinley and Vergie Lou Gilley O'Dell; two sisters, Mamie O'Dell and Virginia Woods; and a brother, Frank Junior O'Dell. Surviving are one son, Bobby O'Dell; one sister, Jeanette Reynolds of Bassett; two brothers, Daniel Jayhue O'Dell of Martinsville and Clinton David O'Dell of Patrick Springs; and a number of nieces and nephews. THOMAS E. PENN
Thomas Edward Penn, 90, of Spencer, died Saturday, September 29, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born October 8, 1916 in Martinsville and was a son of the late Thomas J. and Matilda Craggett. He was also preceded in death by a son, Herman Penn, and a daughter, Barbara J. Penn. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Bassett Superior Lines with 25 years of service. He was a member of Christian View Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a trustee and Sunday school teacher. Surviving are three sons, Dudley T. Penn of Spencer, Edward M. Penn of Martinsville and Alvin K. Penn of Washington, Pa.; two daughters, Glendora P. Robinson of Martinsville and Celissa P. Hairston of Collinsville; one sister, Cecil Fuller of Martinsville; nine grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church in Spencer. The Rev. Douglas Scales will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Esther Dillon Ramsey, 95, formerly of Thomasville, N.C., died Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart where she was a resident. She was born in Patrick County on August 23, 1912 and was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Dillon and Oney Moran Dillon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Alonzo Ramsey, three sisters and five brothers. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Thomasville, and was a member and past state president of the Rebekah Lodge in North Carolina. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett with the Rev. Charles Swanson officiating. Burial was in Pearson-Ramsey Memorial Park in Henry. Margaret Horning Stone, 70, of Ararat Hwy., Ararat, died Monday, October 1, 2007, at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell in Burlington, N.C. She was born in Kittery, Me., on July 8, 1937 and was a daughter of the late George Horning Sr. and Lena Roberts Horning. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Robert Stone Sr., and a brother, George Horning Jr. She was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Pine State Knit Wear. Mavis "Irene" Plaster Turner, 69, of Martinsville, died Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville. She was born in Patrick County on January 31, 1938 and was a daughter of the late William Jasper Plaster and Mavis Oneal Plaster. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Noah Turner; and a son, Kenny Turner. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters, Terry Morton of Axton and Sherry Turner of Martinsville; one son, Jerry Turner of Atlantic City, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.N A graveside memorial service was held Friday at the New Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Mildred Newman Turner, 97, of Martinsville, died Friday, September 28, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was born in Patrick County on August 7, 1910 and was a daughter of the late James Octavius Newman and Mattie Adams Newman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Jerry Turner Sr.; a son, W. Jerry Turner Jr.; four brothers, Taylor Newman, Russell Newman, James Newman and John Newman; and two sisters, Effie Blankenship and Minnie Keaton. She was a graduate of Stuart High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Martinsville for over 50 years and was a member of the Mary Kirk Bible Class. She worked in the office of the former Morris Novelty Furniture Co., which later became Pulaski Furniture Co. Surviving are one son, James Larry Turner of the home; one sister, Lois Hinds of Carlsbad, Calif.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services were conducted Monday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home by the Rev. Dennis Knight and Dick Hensley. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park. Pallbearers were C.W. Gilbert Leroy "Gil" Wilson, 66 of Woolwine, died Thursday, September 27, 2007, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lincoln, Neb., on April 2, 1941 and was a son of the late Herbert and Lois Randall Wilson. He was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Lisa Geoffrion.
He had served in the U.S. Army and had worked as a finance officer for GMAC. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty Dickey Wilson of the home; two sons, Greg Wilson of Austell, Ga., and Brent Wilson of Woodstock, Ga.; one daughter, Amy Harrison of Canton, Ga.; three stepsons, Michael Scoggins of Fayetteville, Ga., Chris Scoggins of High Point, N.C., and Kevin Adams of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Traci Adams of Honolulu, Hi.; six grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. Russell Herbert Brammer, 79, of Woolwine, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on August 4, 1928 to the late Nelson I. and Hattie Harris Brammer.
He attended Woolwine United Methodist Church, and was retired from the timber industry. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, had been a member of the American Legion Post 105, was a charter member of the Woolwine Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Smith River Wildlife Club.
Surviving are his wife, Frankie Belcher Brammer of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Lee and Vicky Brammer of Woolwine; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Lynn and Tony Edwards of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two granddaughters, Kristopher and Ashlee Brammer; two brothers, Robert C. Brammer of Woolwine and Ralph E. Brammer of Collinsville; and one sister, Velda Delois Brammer of Woolwine.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Woolwine United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Hyde officiating. Burial will follow in the Woolwine Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

Velva Lee Coleman, 89, of Stuart, died Sunday, December 9, 2007, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County on August 16, 1918 to the late John Fred Cox and Ida Agnes Slate Cox. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hughes Coleman; a son, Joe Coleman; two sisters, Goldie Gau and Gracie Turner; and two brothers, W. Nash Cox, and W. Odell Cox, Sr.
Surviving are one sister, Lucille Dickerson of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, H.A. Cox of Roanoke and Charles Cox of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Minnie's Chapel Church cemetery with Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating.

Sam Ed East, 87, of Stuart, died Monday, December 10, 2007, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on March 15, 1920 and was a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Hall East. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Vipperman East; two sons, an infant and Sam East Jr.; five sisters, Nancy Vipperman, Ruth East, Lucille Mitchell, Magdalene McAlexander and Annie Welch; and two brothers, William East and Akers East.
He was a member of the Patrick Springs Church of God of Prophecy and had retired from J.P. Stevens, Co., Inc.
Surviving are two brothers, Fred East of Claudville and Hampton East of High Point, N.C.; and two sisters, Thelma Holt of Mount Airy, N.C., and Evelyn Williams of Bristol; one daughter-in-law, two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Joelette Martin, 52, of Martinsville, died Thursday, December 6, 2007, at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount.
She was born July 28, 1955 in Martinsville to the late Marion Walker Scales. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Verneter Royal; and a brother, Maurice W. Dudley.
Surviving are one son, Necota "Quincy" Martin of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Marion Nicole Martin and Juliet Chasity Martin, both of Greensboro; three sisters, Youlanda Dudley and Winona Dudley, both of Martinsville, and Juliaette Wimbush of Patrick County; one brother, Orpheus Scales of Martinsville; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Bassett Funeral Service's South Chapel with Pastor J. Leroy Wimbush officiating. Burial was in the Walker family cemetery.

Bertha Morgan, 64, of Bassett, died Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in West Virginia on February 4, 1943 and was a daughter of the late Robert and Opal Rose Bartfai. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Edward Morgan and Roger Morgan; and a sister, Carrie Bell Poole.
She attended Wayside Tabernacle Holiness Church.
Surviving are her husband, Benjamin Morgan of Bassett; two daughters, Charlotte Morgan of Bassett and Evelyn Joyce of Stuart; three sons, Scott Morgan of Franklin County, Jerry Morgan of Bassett and Matthew Morgan of Martinsville; three sisters, Frances Nunley of Martinsville, Julie Muncy of Tazwell and Mary Hazelwood of Princeton, W.Va.; two brothers, Harry Bartfai and Bobby Bartfai, both of Princeton; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Friday in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service by the Revs. Ray Craiger and Wayne Bowman. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Billy Rose, Harry Bartfai, Jason Grindstaff, Charles Bowman, Freddie Bowman, Dean Boyd, Todd Martin, David Ayers, Bobby Bartfai and James Joyce.
