REID D. TILLEY
Reid Davis Tilley, 97, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Sunday, December 30, 2007, at Surry Community Nursing Center.
He was born May 4, 1910 in Surry County, N.C., and was a son of the late G.W. and Mary Fulp Tilley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evie Childress Tilley; a son, Buford Tilley; four sisters, Audrey Jessup, Eva Cain, Ethel Truelove, and Lillian Moser; and three brothers, George Tilley, Otis Tilley and Edward Tilley.
He was a retired farmer and also retired from Adams-Millis Corporation.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Phillip Snow of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Folger and Nancy Tilley of Mount Airy and Michael Tilley of Ararat, N.C., and Frankie Tilley of Stuart; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Juanita Boles of Germanton, N.C., and Gladys Manring of Rural Hall, N.C.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy with the Revs. Roby Wilcox and Larry Phillips officiating. Burial was in Skyline Memory Gardens.

ROBERT E. TURNER JR.
Robert E. "Junior" Turner Jr., 77, of Evergreen Dr., Spencer, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at his home.
He was born April 20, 1930 in Henry County and was a son of the late Ernest and Verda Turner. He was married to Violet Arrington Turner who preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he earned the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, Occupation Medal in Japan, Good Conduct Medal and 5 Star Bronze Medal. He was an armored tank driver and in military communications.
Surviving are one daughter, Dianne Turner Rorrer of Spencer; three sons, Robert E. Turner III of Ridgeway, Brandon Keith Turner of Roanoke, and Barry Cole Turner of Ridgeway; one sister, Charlotte T. Nelson of Spencer; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral with full military honors will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Old Well Christian Church cemetery by Dr. James A. Dickerson.

STEPHANIE P. VALENTINE
Stephanie Penn Jones Valentine, 41, of Ridgeway, died Friday, January 4, 2008.
She was born in Patrick County on June 7, 1966 and was a daughter of the late Marvin E. Penn and Shirley Manns Penn of Martinsville.
She worked at Biscuitville for 14 years and was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Jeffrey L. Penn of the home; one son, Denzel Jones of Martinsville; three sisters, Carolyn Penn of Collinsville, Opal Smith of Madison Heights and Corona Martin of Austell, Ga.; and one brother, Marvin Penn of Martinsville.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. Michael Penn. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements were by Hines Funeral Service.

LINDA S. BOYD
Linda Stacy Boyd, 59, of Heidelbach School Road, Stuart, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born August 12, 1948, in Richlands and was a daughter of the late Virgil Delbert Stacy and Agnes Meral Gillespie Stacy. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Harold Boyd and William Brian Boyd; a sister, Deborah Denise Tuck; and a brother, David Lambert.
She was the secretary for the Ladies Auxiliary Area 3739 Fraternal Order of Eagles for over 20 years. She was a Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall of Famer, and was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Bassett Moose Lodge.
Surviving are her husband, William Harold Boyd of the home; one daughter, Angela Meral Boyd of Henry; two sisters, Betty Jean Stacy of Richlands and Barbara Carol Baldwin of Doran; several nieces and nephews; and a godson, William Charles Greathouse.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with the Rev. Ron Peal officiating. Burial was in the Boyd-Keen family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Rose, Chris Rigney, John Barnes, Carl Ball, Randall Boyd and Oscar Lowe.
Members of the F.O.E. 3739 Auxiliary served as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements were by Bassett Funeral Service.

ALMA W. DAVIS
Alma Mae White Davis, 78, died Thursday, February 7, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C.
She was born in Wythe County on November 14, 1929 and was a daughter of the late Howard Franklin and Ruby Mae Marshall White. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Lee Davis; a son, Gary Wayne Davis; a sister; two brothers; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
She retired from Cross Creek Apparel and attended Bottom Road Tabernacle when her health permitted.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Thompson of Ararat and Brenda McCarty of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bonnie Pennell of Raleigh, N.C., Betty Blansett of Winston Salem, N.C., and Joyce Lawson of Barren Springs; and one brother, Leonard White of Pfafftown, N.C.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy. The Revs. Ricky Martin and Blain Oakley officiated. Burial was in Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery in Hillsville.

BRENDA S. HELBERT
Brenda Faye Souther Helbert, 55, of Stanleytown, died Sunday, February 10, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Born on January 6, 1953, she was a daughter of Edna Marie Cox Stone of Martinsville and the late Troy Duran Souther.
She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, James Helbert of the home; two daughters, Chelly Carter and Jessica Helbert, both of Stanleytown; three sons, James Leonard Helbert of Wytheville, Randy Dwight Helbert of Patrick County and Timothy Allen Helbert of Bassett; two sisters, Eunice Barton of Maryland and Carline Rutter of Collinsville; one brother, Toney Souther of Martinsville and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Norris Funeral Services chapel with Pastors Edwin Moore and Joseph Hamilton officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory in Martinsville.

LELIA M. LIGHT
Lelia Minter Light, 94, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center, where she was a resident.
She was born in Martinsville on April 7, 1913 and was a daughter of the late Willie Thomas Minter and Nannie Byrd Minter. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Everett G. Light; four sisters, Cora Minter, Edna Lyons, Estelle Spencer and Willie Mae Evans; a half sister, Mollie McCraw; a brother, Stafford Minter; and a half brother, Charlie Walker.
She retired in 1970 from Globman's Department Store, and was a member of Martinsville Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one sister, Margaret Nester of the Landmark Center in Stuart; a half sister, Dolly Hundley of Fieldale; two half brothers, Brewster Walker of Chesapeake and George Walker of New York; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett with Elder Thomas Radford officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Keith Light, Kevin Light, Eddie Light, Glen Light, Daniel Tatum, Frank Walker, Jeff Hundley, Malory Minter, Barry Warren and Kevin Warren.

BARBARA M. MOSS
Barbara Christine Midkiff Moss, 82, of Stuart, died Monday, February 11, 2008 at her home.
She was born in Surry County, N.C., on September 3, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Byron and Hazel Baldwin Midkiff. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Molly Byrd; a stepsister, Nellie Hill; and two stepbrothers, Leonard and Carl Lee Hill.
She was a member of Creasey's Chapel United Methodist Church, and was active in her church as well as community affairs.
Surviving are her husband, Dewey Sanders Moss of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Leigh and Roger Wilson of Stuart, Laura and Ronnie Smith of Stuart and Lyn and Tony Hill of Danville; six grandchildren, Tyler Wilson, Haleigh Wilson, Caleb Hill, McKenzie Hill, Parker Smith and Lauren Smith; one sister, Margaret Moss of Danville; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Francis and Margaret Blackard, both of Stuart; one brother-in-law, Wade Morse and wife Lavergne of Florida; two stepbrothers, Joe Hill of Stuart and Hugh Hill of Pulaski; one stepsister, Betty Sue Barnard of Amelia; and a special caregiver, Sarah Vaughn.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Creasey's Chapel United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Hundley and the Rev. Jimmy Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

PAULINE H. PARKER
Pauline Frances Hall Parker, 99, of Mount Airy, N.C., widow of Walter J. Parker, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at the Golden Living Center.
She was born in Patrick County on October 31, 1908 and was a daughter of the late John Robert and Lucy Mills Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Parker, a daughter, Frances Louise Dorsett, and a brother, Cecil Hall.
She graduated from Radford University and taught school in several Virginia school systems including Carroll, Patrick and Grayson Counties. She also worked for Clark and Parker Lumber Co., where she was the secretary, and retired from public work at the age of 84.
Surviving are two grandsons, Brad Dorsett and Jimmy Dorsett, both of Mount Airy; six great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one sister, Cassie Piedmont of Mount Airy; one brother, Glenn Hall of Powhatan; and a son-in-law.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church with services by the Rev. Bud Cameron. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 124 Myers Dr., Mount Airy, N.C. 27030.

ROBERT H. PUCKETT SR.
Robert Henry Puckett Sr., 81, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Friday, February 8, 2008.
He was born December 6, 1926 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Everette G. and Cora Bowman Puckett. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Valeria Griffin and Mabel Gibson; a brother, Winfred Puckett; two sons, Stephen and Ronald Puckett; a stepson, Michael Broadway; and a grandson, Michael Broadway Jr.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from the military after 30 years of service. Puckett wrote orders for astronaut James A. Lovell, and helped Dr. Joe Kerwin, the first doctor on the moon, to submit his papers to become an astronaut. During the last five years of his military service, he was called by the chief of Naval training/officer personnel to write and teach a course for officer personnel for which he received an outstanding achievement award. As a member of Naval Intelligence during World War II, Puckett was instrumental in breaking a Japanese code.
Surviving are his wife, Exie Helms Puckett; one daughter, Dianne P. Ellison of Yadkinville, N.C.; four sons, Robert H. Puckett Jr. of Kernersville, N.C., David F. Puckett of Lexington, N.C., Richard E. (Ricky) Puckett of Mount Airy, N.C., and E. Gary Puckett of Galax.; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a stepson, Jerry W. Broadway of Huntersville, N.C.; six sisters, Nellie Easter of Ararat, Eunice Puckett of West End, N.C., Inez Hall of Biscoe, N.C., Allie Mae Smith of Monroe, N.C., Lucille Britt of Star, N.C., and Louisa Freeman of Eagle Springs, N.C.; five brothers, James Oliver Puckett of Hamlet, N.C., Charlie Puckett of West End, Ken Puckett of Georgia, Sammy Puckett of Eagle Springs, N.C., and James Quesinberry of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held Monday at Grace Baptist Temple with Pastor Ed Sears officiating. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Park.

FRANKIE L. VICK
Frankie Lequire Vick, 91, of Jamestown, N.C., died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at Evergreens Nursing Home in High Point, N.C.
She was born December 31, 1916 in Swain County, N.C., and was a daughter to the late Calvin and Palestine Wiggins Lequire. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Glenn Wesley Vick; two sisters, Bertha Surrett and Clara Allen; and two brothers, Ernest Lequire and Robert Lequire.
She was a member of the Jamestown Church of God for 68 years where she was a member of the ladies' auxiliary and was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years. She worked at various jobs, and following retirement, she worked as a foster grandparent at Union Hill School.
Surviving are four daughters, Elaine Bowman of Thomasville, N.C., Barbara Morgan of Jamestown, Cathy Barker of Reidsville, N.C., and Pat Cruthis of Jamestown; two sons, Carrol Vick of Ararat and Delbert Vick of Jamestown; an adopted daughter, Reba Wynn of Chesterfield, S.C.; four brothers, Lee Lequire and Jim Lequire, both of Mount Airy, N.C., Clarence Lequire of Valdese, N.C., and Harvey Lequire of Bryson City, N.C.; two sisters, Edna Rice and Ethel Burchfield, both of Black Mountain, N.C.; 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Jamestown Church of God with the Revs. Sherman Hawks and Kenneth Whisnant, and sons-in-law James C. "Whitey" Bowman and the Rev. Tony Cruthis officiating. Burial was in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery.

ALICE M. WRIGHT
Alice Martha Wright, 97, of Patrick Springs, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Stanleytown Health Care Center.
She was born on January 6, 1911 in the Buffalo Ridge section of Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Thomas Green and Mattie Richardson Wright. In addition to her parents, She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Diery Wright; a daughter, Peggy Ann Stone; five brothers, John Wright, Pierce Wright, Richard Wright, Sherman Wright and James Wright; and three sisters, Pearlie Wright, Emma Richardson and an infant sister.
For many years, she was a very active member of Goodwill Baptist Church, serving as choir leader and a Sunday school teacher. In later years, she was a member of County Line Church of God of Prophecy.
She attended Wilson Mission School in the Pole Bridge section of Patrick County and graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1929. She taught in several schools in Patrick County, and last taught at the two-room Via School from 1946 ­ 1950.
Her sales career included World Book Encyclopedia, Stanley Products and Leggett's Department Store. She retired from Bassett Walker Corporation. She was active in the Patrick County Retired Teachers Association, Patrick Henry Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary, Patrick County Senior Citizens and was a volunteer at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
During Governor Holton's tenure, she served as county representative for the Silver Hair Advisory Committee.
Surviving are one son, James D. Wright of Ruffin, N.C.; two daughters, Marie Lawrence of Spencer and Virginia Arthur of Kenbridge; five grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandsons; one brother, Rev. P.J. Wright of Rocky Mount; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Revs. Freddie Bonds and Wayne Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in the Wright family cemetery on Pole Bridge Road.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Patrick Henry Fire Department, 3125 County Line Road, Patrick Springs, Va. 24133, "Amber's Helpers" of County Line Church of God of Prophecy, or to Hospice of Patrick County, 835 Woodland Drive, Suite 101, Stuart, Va. 24171.

HEATH C. ALLOWAY
Heath Clark Alloway, 26, of Martinsville, died on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born on August 1, 1981 in Canton, Ga., and was a son of Fred and Teresa Alloway Trusty of Stuart. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Granville Clark Alloway, maternal step-grandfather, Lawrence Simmons, paternal grandfather, Richard Moore; and two aunts, Tonya Brown and Becky Trusty.
He had served in the National Guard Reserve, and worked for Service Roofing. He attended First Baptist Church in Martinsville.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Tonya Hundley Alloway of Martinsville; two stepdaughters, Amber and Brittany Nowlin, both of Martinsville; one brother, Freddy Joe Trusty of Stuart; one sister, Patricia Mae Alloway of Patrick Springs; maternal grandmother, Eleanor Simmons of Stuart; paternal grandmother, Martha Yates of Cedar Bluff; a nephew; two cousins and five uncles.
A graveside service for will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Patrick Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bennie Redd officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home of his parents.

FANNIE E. BELCHER
Fannie E. Belcher, 95, of Laurel Fork, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Laurel Meadows Nursing Center in Laurel Fork.
She was born in Patrick County on August 3, 1912 and was a daughter of the late George and Julia Trent Harris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Davis Belcher; eight brothers and one sister.
She attended Conner's View Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Dorn Belcher of Roanoke and William Linford and Lillian Belcher of Laurel Fork; one grandson, David Len Belcher of Laurel Fork; one granddaughter, Donna Kay Riggins and husband Johnnie of Meadows of Dan; one great-grandson, Lee Randall Quesenberry and wife Dawn; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Conner's View Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Edward Bowman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
