DOROTHY M. McCONNELL
Dorothy Frances Miles McConnell, 89, of Stuart and formerly of Martinsville and Radford, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
Born on March 17, 1919 in Henry County, she was a daughter of the late James Alvah Miles and Velda Nelson Miles. She was also predeceased by her husband, Howard "Bud" McConnell in 2002, and a brother, John Shelburne Miles. She was an assistant librarian for the city of Radford and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Martinsville for over 30 years, where she taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County Auxiliary and the Garden Club of Radford.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Mae Payne of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Susan M. Sullivan of Lake Jackson, Tex.; two sons, H. Nelson McConnell of Stuart and David P. McConnell of Pawley's Island, S.C.; one sister, Joelene Miles White of Martinsville; one brother, Elmo Nelson 'Turk" Miles of Collinsville; three grandchildren, Brian S. Sullivan of Houston, Tex., Beth McConnell Mirza of Alexandria, and Kristin Sullivan Perez of Friendswood, Tex.; and two great-grandchildren, Priscilla Perez and Amory Perez both of Friendswood.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Martinsville with Dr. Dennis Knight and the Rev. John Fulcher officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville.

ELZIE H. MORAN
Elzie Hugh Moran, 94, of Woolwine, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on June 12, 1913 and was a son of the late E.P. "Preston" and Cora Hall Moran. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Griffith Moran; five sisters, Cloepa Goode, Clarissia Bowling, Allene Haynes, Imelda Whitlock and Lorene Pendleton, and six brothers, Oliver Moran, Aubrey Moran, Ray Moran, Oscar Moran, Melvin Moran and Troy Moran. He was a long-time member of Woolwine United Methodist Church, and had been a farmer and sawmiller.
Surviving are one sister, Neola Thomas of Roanoke; two half-brothers, Alvis Moran and Alton Moran, both of Floyd; a sister-in-law, Verona Moran of Collinsville; several nieces and nephews; a special caregiver, Connie Belcher of Woolwine, and special friend, Larry Cockram of Woolwine.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Woolwine United Methodist Church with Pastors Jack Hyde and Tim Hunt officiating. Burial was in the Woolwine Cemetery.

PAULINE P. EPPERSON
Mrs. Pauline Grace Peikos Epperson, 71, of Ararat Hwy., Ararat, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born March 12, 1937, in Lowell, Mass., and was a daughter of the late William and Stella Lang. She was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Lasalla.
She was a pharmacy technician at Rite Aid and was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.
Surviving are her husband, Randy G. Epperson of the home; three sons, Scott Epperson of Benson, N.C., Kent Epperson of Meadows of Dan, and Clint Epperson of Kodak, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and one sister, Blanche Barlow of Wilmington, Del.
The funeral mass will be held Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church. The service will be conducted by Father Eric Kowalski. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, N.C.

ANNE M. HAILE
Anne Murphy Haile, 66, of Dunnsville, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
She was born in Spencer in Henry County on February 13, 1942 and was a daughter of Mae H. Murphy of Spencer and the late James W. Murphy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Haile III.
She retired from the Department of Transportation in Richmond and was a member of Rappahannock Christian Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one son, Michael John Haile Sr. of Aylett; two grandchildren; six sisters, Helen M. Martin and Betty M. Reed, both of Martinsville; Jean M. Blackwell of Rocky Mount, Doris M. Steinberg of Salem, Brenda M. Burgess of Stuart and Teresa M. Martin of Spencer; and two brothers, Bernard Murphy of Bassett and Larry Murphy of Spencer.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home in Tappahannock. Burial was in Rappahannock Christian Church cemetery in Dunnsville.

CHRISTINE H. NESTER
Christine H. Nester, 68 of Meadows of Dan, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
She was born in Floyd County on October 4, 1939 and was a daughter of the late Charlie and Susan Alderman Hylton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Garner Nester, and three brothers, Victor Hylton, Leonard Hylton and Clarence Hylton.
She was retired from Micrometrics and was a member of Green Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Ramona Helms of Laurel Fork and Lisa Sehen of Meadows of Dan; one son, Garland "Bucky" Nester of Meadows of Dan; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nester were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. J.C. Willard officiating. Burial was in the Shelor family cemetery.

SHIRLEY C. OVERBY
Shirley Jane Corns Overby, 67, of Stuart, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Harvey Lee Corns and the late Jettie Mabe Corns. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Novella Shough.
She worked for Pannill Knitting for 35 years and then for Vaughan Furniture. She was a member of Minnie's Chapel Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are her husband, Bobby Odell Overby, one daughter, Sandra Lynn Chaney of Bassett, three grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford Ray Corns, Randolph Corns and Bobby Corns, all of Stuart, three sisters, Erlene Spence of Patrick Springs, Lettie Ruth Corns of Stuart, and Della Mae Smith of High Point, N.C.
Funeral services were held Monday at Minnie's Chapel Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Gary Gossett, David Bishop, Curtis Hall and Joe Shockley officiating.

AGNES R. SHUFF
Agnes Rorrer Shuff, 82, of Woolwine, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on February 3, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Talton and Maggie Foley Rorrer. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Beadie McCraw, and two brothers, Henry Rorrer and Freeman Rorrer.
She was retired from J.P. Stevens Corporation and was a member of Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she served as past president of the Women's Ministry.
Surviving are her husband, Warren Shuff of the home; three sons, Douglas Shuff Sr. of Clemmons, N.C., Barney Shuff of Yukon, Okla., and Bennett Shuff of Woolwine; one daughter, Rebecca Clark of Woolwine; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dora Wingfield of Ridgeway and Inez Hall of Bassett.
Funeral services were held Saturday. at the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Kenneth Terry, Bobby Rakes, Malcolm Herndon, and Trent Wall officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

MATLEAN O. WILLIAMS
Matlean O. Williams, 82, of Reed Creek, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at her home.
She was born September 21, 1925 in Stokes County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Wil Overby and Jettie Hall Overby. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Inez Williams; her twin sister, Molean Mays, three other sisters, Marie Puckett, Elizabeth Cassiday, and Lettie Duncan; and three brothers, Walter Overby, Arthur Overby, and Buryl Overby.
She retired from Bassett-Walker and was of the Primitive Baptist faith
Surviving are her husband, Otis W. Williams of the home; one daughter, Sharon W. Keffer of Bassett, three sons, Alan W. Williams of Aberdeen, N.C., Gary A. Williams of the home, and Randy L. Williams of Bassett; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Overby and Hoover Overby, both of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Bassett Funeral Service's South Chapel by Elders Winfred Young, Mitchell Young, Larry Crock and the Rev. Guy Hartsock. Burial was in the Dobyns Cemetery in Patrick County.

LORENE N. BRYANT
Lorene Nelson Bryant, 82 of Stuart, died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on December 28, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Walter G. and Betty Florence Hill Nelson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George A. Bryant; a sister, Mary Emma Tucker; and two brothers, George Thomas "Dick" Nelson and Walter Holmes Nelson.
She was a longtime member of Nettle Ridge United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women's Ministry.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ronnie Haley of Stuart; two grandchildren, Bryan Williams and Chris Haley, both of Blacksburg; a special niece, Dee Wood Kivett of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Sue N. Amos of Critz and Nancy N. Wood of Stuart; one brother, Billy Hill Nelson of Bassett; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Caudill of Cambridge, Oh.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Nettle Ridge United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Clayton officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Joy Hale Cassell, 67, of Bassett, died Sunday, September 14, 2008, at her home.
She was born September 24, 1940 in Franklin County and was a daughter of the late Posie Brown Hale and the late Cora Quinn Hale. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Woody. and a brother, Leonard Hale.
She retired from Bassett-Walker and was a member of Fieldale Outreach Ministries.
Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Cassell of Patrick County and Michele McGrady of Sanville; two sons, Randy Cassell of Bassett and Mike Cassell of Patrick Springs; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Lovella Hooker of Lexington, NC, Mary Shively of Richmond, Barbara Hale of Ferrum, Mittie Thornhill of Oak Level, and Gladys Hale of Bassett; five brothers, Otis Hale, Coleman Hale, Willie Hale, and George Hale all of Ferrum, and J.R. Hale of Oak Level, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service South Chapel with Pastors Bud Sedwick and Hank Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Ferrum.
GEORGE W. DILLON
George William "Bill" Dillon, age 73, died Monday, September 15, 2008, at the Danville Regional Hospital.
He was born May 7, 1935 in Patrick County, and was a son of the late George W. and Melva Cassell Dillon. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Eldean Hodges and a brother, Roy Dillon.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Catron Dillon of the home; three daughters, Tammy Hodges of Glade Hill, Renee Walls of Atlanta, Ga., and Renita Jessie of Greensboro, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Della Belton of Eden, N.C., and Wanda Mize of Hickory, N.C.; two stepsons, Mike Catron and David Catron, both of Bassett; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Dillon of Patrick Springs and Jimbo Dillon of Virginia; one sister, Lorene Williams of Patrick Springs and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, at 11 a.m. in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service by the Rev. Sammy Caldwell. Burial will follow in the Old Spoon Creek Cemetery.

Annie Lucretia Burney Gerety, 58, of Trinidad, Colo., died Sunday, September 14, 2008, as a result of an automobile accident.
She was born May 16, 1950, in Hope Mills, N.C., to Braxton Robert Burney Sr., and Mildred Walters Burney. She was preceded in death by her father and stepfather, Charles W. Stanley of Patrick Springs.
Surviving are her husband, William F. Gerety of Trinidad; her mother, Mildred W. Stanley of Stuart; one sister, Janice B. Lawson of Ridgeway; one brother, Braxton R. Burney Jr. of High Point, N.C.; one stepsister, Elva S. Martin of Patrick Springs; one stepdaughter, Lisa LaRusch of Albuquerque, N.M.; and one stepson, Michael Gerety of Rio Rancho, N.M.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Ward Avenue Church of God of Prophecy in High Point, N.C. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

WILLIAM J. GILLIE
William Jefferson "Bill" Gillie, 84, of Jeb Stuart Hwy., Spencer, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Critz on February 7, 1924 and was a son of the late Jeff Gilley Jr. and Emma Craig Gilley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Holliman.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an engineer, and was a life member of Patrick County VFW where he once served as post commander.
Surviving are three sisters: Nancy Biggs of Roanoke, Carlyne Bondurant of Martinsville and Lois Turner of Ridgeway; two brothers: Harbour Gilley of Spencer and Hamon Gilley of Martinsville; four nieces, two nephews, five great-nieces and nephews, four great-great-nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law, Thomas Holliman of Ridgeway.
Funeral services were held Friday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home of Stuart with the Revs. Leonard Manuel and Keith Spangenburg officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the New Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chris Rakes, Barry Griffin, William Hankins, Bill Critz, Wayne Holliman, Thomas Holliman and Cliff Stone.

JENNIFER L. HALL
Jennifer Lynne Hall, 41, of Stuart, died Monday, September 8, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Rocky Mount on May 5, 1967 and was a daughter of Marvin Lee Street of Bassett and the late Corene Barbour Street. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Eddie Barbour Sr. and Mattie E. Barbour; and her paternal grandparents, Emmett and Esther Street.
She graduated from John D. Bassett High School and attended Patrick Henry Community College. She worked at Bassett-Walker for 10 years and at Nylstar for 10 years before she became disabled.
She was a member of Iron Belt Christian Church where she served in various organizations and groups. She was an instrumentalist, band singer and director, a Bible study teacher and assistant secretary of the church. She also was a member of Ordained by God First Christian Church of Stuart.
Surviving, in addition to her father of Bassett, are her husband, Dwight Eugene Hall Jr.; two sisters, Karon Hairston and Minister Kathy Thomas, both of Stuart; two brothers, Farrell Street and Dwayne Street, both of Bassett; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett Chapel, by the Rev. William Hairston. Burial was in the Hairston family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jaryl Barbour, Randy Chaney, Sammie Cooke, Thomas Hagwood, Benny King, Steve Payne, Danny Price, Jeremy Street, Walter Street, Parnell Webster and Javon Younger.
LUCY S. MARTIN
Lucy Lee Spencer Martin, 80, of Stuart, died Thursday, September 11, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on July 26, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Bunice and Mildred Hicks Spencer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Martin Jr.; three brothers, Oneal Spencer, Lester Spencer and William Henry Spencer; and two sisters, Mildred Turner and Annie Sue Pullins.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, and was retired from Bassett-Walker Industries.
Surviving are four daughters, Patricia Ann Martin of Stuart, Brenda Cropps of Ararat, N.C., Norma Jean Martin and Mary Martin, both of Stuart; three sons, Robert Martin of Yonkers, N.Y., James L. Martin of Stuart and Anthony R. Martin of Stuart; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carl Spencer of Yonkers.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Joseph Carter Sr. officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Benny King, James Houchins, Brian Morris, Ryan Morris, Lamont Holland and Ricky Penn.
