Warren Gray Scott, 80, of Dublin, died Sunday, September 14, 2008, at his home.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Radford and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Hobart and Nellie Gray Scott, and a brother, J. Reginald Scott.
Surviving are his wife, Hubertien Helen Scott of Dublin; two daughters, Tina Secreast of Radford and Elizabeth Ramdeen of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two sons, Richard Williams of Lenoir, N.C., and John Williams of Williamsburg; five grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Hobart Scott Jr. of Marietta, Ga., and Harold Eugene Scott of Bishop, Calif.; two sisters, Nellie Melba Cornwell of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Helen Catherine Dickens of Radford; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Lane and the Rev. Kent Taylor officiating.

CHARLES SHEPPARD
Charles "Chuck" Sheppard, 73, of Collinsville, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at home.
He was born in Clinton, S.C., on February 15, 1935 and was a son of the late O.R. and Pearlie Ann Sheppard.
He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years during the Korean Conflict and two tours in Vietnam. He was a sergeant first class and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
Sheppard retired from Blue Ridge Hardware.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Handy Sheppard of the home; three stepdaughters, Lou Brammer of Woolwine, Peggy Jones of Stuart and Lisa Martin of Patrick Springs; one stepson, Frankie Hall of Cana; one brother, Luther "Bud" Sheppard of Franklin County; four stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett with Brother Brian M. Vaughan officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park Mausoleum.
Military honors were conducted by the 58th Quartermaster Company from Fort Lee. Military personnel also served as pallbearers.
JOHN W. TILLEY
John Walter Tilley, 88, of Ayers Orchard Road, Stuart, died Friday, September 12, 2008, at North East Carolinas Medical Center in Concord, N.C.
He was born in Stokes County, N.C., on November 27, 1919 and was a son of the late Lloyd Tilley and Ettie Rogers Tilley. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Thelma Tipton Tilley; two sisters; and seven brothers.
He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and the VFW. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Surviving are three daughters, Diane L. Tilley of Dallas, Tex., Jane R. Tilley of Fairfax and Martha L. Tilley of Charlotte, N.C.; and 22 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Providence United Methodist Church by Pastor David Westmoreland. Burial was in the Westfield Baptist Church cemetery.

SUSIE S. WRIGHT
Susie Ruth Scott Wright, 72 ,of Country Kitchen Loop, Stuart, died Saturday, September 13, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born on September 27, 1935 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Scott and Ada Whalen Scott. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Scott and Russell Scott.
She attended Buffalo Ridge Church of God of Prophecy and was a bookkeeper for Paul Wright Sawmilling Co.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Paul C. Wright of the home; and one son and daughter-in-law, Delbert and Mary Alma Wright of Stuart.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with the Revs. Dale Bailey, Mike Varner, Everette Mills, and Garnett Byrd officiating. Entombment will follow in the Patrick Memorial Gardens.
CHARLIE E. AKERS
Charlie Everett Akers, 73, of Cana, died at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born November 13, 1934 in Carroll County and was a son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Akers and Minnie Quesinberry Akers. He was also preceded in death by three sons, James Akers, Ronnie Akers and Terry Akers; and a sister, Donna Nelson.
He was a farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Tate Akers of the home; two daughters, Deborah Akers and Lisa Ann Akers, both of the home; four sisters, Lucille Hall of Stuart, Mildred Sweeney of Axton, Elvie Cole of Martinsville and Willowdean Pack of Bassett; and four brothers, James Akers of Rhode Island, Roy Akers of California, Larry Akers of Martinsville and Alan Bryant.
Graveside services were held Sunday at the Akers family cemetery with the Rev. Albert Everidge officiating.

MARY C. ATKINS
Mary Francis Cox Atkins, 43, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Monday, October 6, 2008.
She was born in Tokyo, Japan, on October 5, 1965 and was a daughter of Ted Garfield and Mary Catherine Truman Cox.
She was of the Pentecostal faith. Surviving are her husband, Dale Atkins of Mount Airy; one daughter, Brittany Hill of Ararat; two sons, Chris Atkins and Corey Atkins, both of Mount Airy; one grandson; and two sisters, Becky Moody of Mount Airy and Sara Edwards of Lawsonville, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Community Church by the Revs. Joey Thompson and Ray Hudson.

Olivia Nichole Cassell Baliles, infant daughter of Maranda May Baliles and Randall Shane Cassell, died Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are maternal grandparents, Raven Newman and Hassell Baliles, both of Patrick Springs, and Gerri Mabe of Spencer; paternal grandparents, Randy and Donna Cassell of Bassett; great-grandmother, Betty Clark Cooper of Bassett; and great-great-grandmother, Vivian Scranton of Bassett.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, September 30, in Patrick Memorial Gardens with Director Kelly G. Ratcliff officiating.
Pallbearers were Ratcliff and Junior Cassady.

Derrick Shane Coleman, 29, of Stuart, died Sunday, October 5, 2008.
He was born in Patrick County on August 21, 1979 to the late Esley Conrad Coleman Sr. and Lena Collins Coleman of Stuart. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; John Raymond and Ethel Wiggington Coleman and his maternal grandparents; William Hassell and Iva Inman Collins.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one brother; Esley "Butch" Coleman Jr. and wife René of Stuart; and a niece, Caeley Coleman of Stuart.

Travis Lee "Dice" Fallin, 19, of Patrick Springs, died Monday, October 6, 2008, in Bassett.
He was born in Stuart on October 3, 1989 and was a son of Herbert L. Fallin of Bassett and Wendy Richardson Fallin of Bassett. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles Fallin.
He was a 2008 graduate of Bassett High School and attended County Line Church of God of Prophecy.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his grandparents, Woody and Jane Richardson of Bassett and Ethel Fallin of Axton; his great-grandmother, Edna Draper of Martinsville; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service by Pastor Freddie Bonds. Burial will be in County Line Church of God of Prophecy cemetery.

Richard Howard Foley Jr., 82, of Ridgeway, died October 5, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on June 11, 1926 and was a son of the late Richard Howard Foley Sr. and Grace Emma Handy Foley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia F. Stewart.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was owner/operator of Foley's Dairy Farm in Ridgeway for 39 years. He was a member of High Point Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Lee Anna S. Foley of the home; one son, Larry H. Foley of Ridgeway; two daughters, Barbara F. Combs of Martinsville and Sharon F. Cox of Ridgeway; one brother, James Ray Foley of Patrick Springs; two sisters, Evelyn F. Newman of Stuart and Emma Mae F. Puckett of Bassett; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home by the Rev. Jim Dunn. Burial, with military honors, will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Betty Ruth Johnson, 84, of Madison Road, Ridgeway, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at her home.
Born on August 4, 1924 in Patrick County, she was a daughter of the late James T. Handy and Lillian Gunter Handy. She was also predeceased by her husband, Arnold E. Johnson; a son, Marvin J. Johnson; three sisters, Mabel Nowlin, Marie Rogers and Barbara Handy; and five brothers, Clanton Handy, James Handy, John Handy, Raymond Handy and Paul Handy.
She was a member of the Chatham Heights Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are one daughter, Margaret J. Brown of Martinsville; one son, Ronald E. Johnson of Ridgeway; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with Reverend Rick Wilkie officiating. Entombment will be held in the Roselawn Abbey.

Clarence Lee Martin, 79, of Westfield, N.C., died Friday, October 3, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
He was born February 9, 1929, in Stokes County, N.C., and was a son of the late Charles Otis and Vellie Hooker Martin. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Dawn Joyce; and six brothers, Charles Lindbergh Martin, John Calvin Martin, William Thomas Martin, Ronald Martin, Donald Martin, and Denville Reid Martin.
He was a cattle farmer for many years and retired from United Elastic. He was a member of Asbury Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Nellie Rogers Martin of the home; one daughter, Kathy Holt of Stuart; four sisters, Louise Jessup and Linda Brindle, both of Pilot Mountain, N.C., Lavinia Fouts of Thomasville, N.C., and Shelby Cooke of Westfield; two brothers, Dewey Martin of Mount Airy, N.C., and Justin Martin of King; N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Asbury Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Rickey Rogers and Terry Collins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Robert "Bob" Leon Oliver, 68, of Honeymoon Drive, Critz, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Eden, N.C., on March 30, 1940 and was a son of the late Edgar Oliver and Gracie Gilley Oliver Slate. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Christine Oliver; and four brothers, Lawrence Oliver, Leon Oliver, Leonard Oliver, and Marion Oliver, and his stepmother, Annie Sue Oliver.
He retired after 15 years of service with CCI Systems Climate Control Inc. as a heating and air specialist. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne "Trudy" Oliver of the home; five daughters, Susie Thurman of Martinsville, Barbara Oliver of Stuart, and Bobbie Sue Oliver, Tammy Watkins and Melissa Oliver, all of Oklahoma; four sisters, Shirley Ann Dehart of Rocky Mount, Faye Belton and Jackie Sue Pearson of Bassett, and Wanda Diane Conner of Martinsville; six brothers, Richard Oliver of Idaho, James Taylor of Danville, Joe Taylor of Idaho, and Ronnie Oliver, Donnie Oliver and Tom Oliver, all of Bassett; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Friday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor David Coleman officiating. Burial was private.

Infant Owen Raymond Michael Parnell died at birth on Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
He is survived by his mother, Samantha Nicole Turner of Stuart; his father, Adam Matthew Parnell of Bassett; maternal grandparents, Mike and Phyllis M. Turner of Stuart; paternal grandparents, Wink and Kathy Parnell of Bassett; maternal great-grandparents, Joy Turner and Virginia Mabe, both of Stuart; paternal great-grandparents, Ethel Parnell of Bassett and Irene Hancock of Patrick Springs; and stepgrandmother, Judy Turner of Critz.

Scotty Ray Ashby, 42, of Hobson Road, Axton, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Martinsville on January 16, 1966 and was a son of Kenneth Ray Ashby and Ethel Dickenson Ashby of Ridgeway.
He was a truck driver for Sunbelt Furniture Xpress in Hickory, N.C., for nine years.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Tammy Kellam Ashby of the home; two daughters, Amber Nicole Ashby and Brittany Lynn Ashby, both of Martinsville; one stepdaughter, Christy Lynn Cunningham of Woolwine; one sister, Kenya Ashby of Ridgeway; three grandchildren; and one niece.
