FRANCES C. CLARK
Frances "Tince" Ashworth Cassady Clark, 81, died Thursday, December 18, 2008.
She was born in West Virginia on June 7, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Grace Foley Ashworth. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Clark; a son, Paul Wayne Cassady; a daughter, Margaret LaVelle Cassady; a sister, Jane A. Harrell; and two brothers, Harvey Ashworth and Ronald Ashworth.
Surviving are one son, David Cassady of Portsmouth; one daughter, Janice Cassady Young Davis of Boones Mill; five grandsons; five great-grandsons; three brothers, Rayford Ashworth of Bassett; Garland "Doc" Ashworth of Collinsville and Arthur Lee Ashworth of Kinston, N.C.; three stepchildren, Phyllis Overby of Stuart, David Clark of Lawsonville, N.C., and Ronald Clark of Woolwine; nine step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at First Baptist Church of Bassett by the Rev. Lou Bennett. Burial was in the Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren cemetery.

MINNIE J. CORNS
Minnie J. "Mickey" Corns, 83, of Maple Leaf Road, Spencer, died Thursday, December 18, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Rockingham County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late John Hampton Joyce and Josie Martin Joyce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Grover Corns; a brother, Less Joyce; and three sisters, Martha Etta Adkins, Gertrude Durham and Rene Alice Nuckles.
She retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting.
Surviving are one son, Bruce Corns of Spencer; one daughter, Linda Compton of Kannapolis, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson.
A graveside service was held Sunday at Peters Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Ed Hartman and Pastor Terry Ragsdale officiated.

RUBY M. ELLISON
Ruby Mae Moon Ellison, 70, of Patrick Springs, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Raleigh, W.Va., on January 17, 1938 and was a daughter of the late Earl and Hannah Underwood Moon. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Justin and Jordan Alderman, and two sisters, Macell Keffer and Margie Cober.
She was retired from Beckett Burners in Ohio, and was a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Franklin D. Ellison of the home; three daughters, Sandra K. Bowman and Rebecca Ramsey, both of Spencer, and Lola Ann Wells of Martinsville; one son, Robert Ray Miller Jr. of Ferrum; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Keffer of Travelers Rest, S.C.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Mark Wright officiating. Burial was private.

KENNETH SMART
Kenneth Smart, 82, of Burlington, N.C., died Friday, December 19, 2008, at the Hospice Home after six months of declining health.
Born in McAlpin, W.Va., he was a son of the late Grover Cleveland Smart and the late Goldie May Williams Smart. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Eva Shockley; and three brothers, Buren Smart, John Smart and Perry Smart.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He retired from AT&T with over 41 years of service and was a member of Ireland St. Chapel. He was a Lifeline volunteer for several years.
Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Erma Trollinger Smart of the home; two daughters, Pamela Smart Moody of Gibsonville, N.C. and Patricia Smart Covington of Mebane, N.C.; one son, Paul Terry Smart of Mebane; two stepsons, Jay Andrews and Jeff Andrews, both of Burlington; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; six brothers, Percy Smart of Graham, N.C., Gene Smart of Doswell, Charles Smart of Georgia, G.C. Smart of Gainsville, Fla., Harold Smart of Charlottesville and Fred Smart of Stuart.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Larry Batts. Burial was in Alamance Memorial Park.

ROBIN L. VIPPERMAN
Robin Louise Vipperman, 52 of Courtland, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at her home.
She was born February 18, 1956 in Newport, R.I. and was a daughter of Juanita Mengelt of Patrick Springs and the late Harry Mengelt.
She was a certified nursing assistant.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, James Vipperman of the home; one daughter, Krystal Dawn Barrett of Courtland; one son, Shawn Eugene Boyd of Patrick Springs; one stepdaughter, Pam McBride of Patrick Springs; one stepson, Kevin Vipperman of Patrick Springs; one sister, Dawn Mengelt Moles of Patrick Springs; and two brothers, Michael David Mengelt of Fresno, Calif., and Ronnie Mengelt of Patrick Springs.
Funeral services were held Monday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Freeman officiating. Burial was in the Hooker family cemetery.

VIVIAN K. BOWMAN
Vivian Keith Bowman, 71, of Martinsville, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on January 11, 1938 and was a daughter of the late Esley Howard Keith and Gracie Keith Cockram. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Charles Keith Bowman and Stephen Anthony Bowman.
She worked at Collinsville Printing and at Tultex for several years, and was a member at Victory Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Charlie M. Bowman of the home; three sisters, Sandra Haden, Carlene Shelor, and Betty Lewis, all of Meadows of Dan; five brothers, Gene Keith of Richmond, Bill Keith of Meadows of Dan, Garland Keith of Martinsville, J.L Cockram of Meadows of Dan, and Danny Cockram of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Victory Baptist Church with Pastors Dan Schelling and David Naff officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Melvin Eugene Branch, 37, of Ararat, died Saturday, January 24, 2009.
He was born in Henry County on August 13, 1971. Mr. Branch was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eugene and Goldie Rorrer, and Will and Ada Branch.
Surviving are his parents, Howard M. Branch of Stuart and Linda Rorrer King of Hawthorne, Fla.; one sister, Melissa Haynes of Stuart; and two nephews.
A memorial service was held Thursday evening at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Mark Wright officiating. Burial will be private.

HELEN H. EDWARDS
Helen Isbell Hawks Edwards, 68, of Dobson, N.C., died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C.
She was born August 15, 1940 in Carroll County and was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Ellen Hawks Hawks. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary "Maude" Edwards; and three brothers, Jessie Hawks, Junior "Blacky" Hawks, and John Henry Hawks.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her husband, Loman Chester Edwards of the home; one son, Ollis Hawks of Cana; five stepgrandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Sally Farris of Cana and Ethel Edwards of Ararat; and three brothers, Bobby Hawks and Clarence Hawks, both of Cana, and Earl Hawks of Lowgap, N.C.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Mike Osborne and Elder V.J. Hawks officiating. Burial was in the Edwards family cemetery.
LINDA E. GRAVES
Linda Gail Epley Graves, 56, of Bassett, died Sunday, February 1, 2009, at home, after several years of declining health.
She was a native of North Carolina and was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa; her mother, Betty Jo Owenby; her father, Wilburn "Red" Epley; and a brother, Steve Epley.
She worked as a registered nurse for a number of years and for 10 years was a massage therapist.
Surviving are her husband, Chip Graves; two daughters, Abigail Melvin of Danville and Rebekah Graves of Staunton; two grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Epley of Stuart and Terry Epley of Harlem, Ga.; a sister, Wendy Epley of Asheville, N.C.; a stepbrother and two stepsisters, Gary Owenby, Teresa Brendle and Brenda McFee, all of Asheville, N.C.
The family will receive friends at Blackberry Baptist Church, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. in the church chapel.
RANDALL S. FERGUSON
Randall Scott Ferguson, 44, of Fieldale, died January 30, 2009, at his home.
Born in New York on November 15, 1964, he was a son of James Calvin Ferguson of Patrick County and the late Kathleen St. Clair Ferguson. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Buford Ferguson and Arlene Ferguson and James Matthew St. Clair and Mary St. Clair.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are his stepmother, Alice Shough Ferguson of Patrick County; one daughter, Katie Ferguson of South Carolina; three brothers, Daniel Brice Ferguson of Atlanta, Ga., Matthew Brett Ferguson of South Carolina and James Calvin Ferguson II of Charleston S.C.; and several aunts and uncles.
A funeral Mass will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Joseph T. Torretto officiating. A double burial will follow at Mt. Hermon Church of the Brethren Church cemetery for Ferguson and his aunt, Brenda Ferguson Merriam. Arrangements are by Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett.
SANDRA K. LAWLESS
Sandra Kay Lawless, 54, of Stuart, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at her home.
She was born in Welch, W.Va., on May 23, 1954 and was a daughter of Vincent Savolskis and Zona Crowder Savolskis of Patrick Springs.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Larry Lawless of the home; two daughters, Nettie Mae Luna of Critz and Angel Kay Pack of Ararat; two sons, Johnathan Volkers of Stuart and Larry Vincent Lawless of Radford; one stepson, Randy Lawless of Stuart; one stepdaughter, Penny Dalton of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Sarah Doss officiating. Burial was in the Jacks Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tim Sharron, Kelvin Pack, James Pack, Michael Pack, Lewis Lankford and Johnathan Volkers.
BRENDA F. MERRIMAM
Brenda Ferguson Merriam, 66, of Martinsville, died Monday, February 2, 2009, at her home.
She was born in Martinsville on August 5, 1942 to the late Harry Ferguson and Arlene Clifton Ferguson. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Guelda Ferguson.
She attended the First Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are her husband, Al Merriam of the home; two daughters, Guelda Duncan and Renee Crawford, both of North Carolina; three sons, Darold Crawford, David Crawford and Ricky Crawford, all of North Carolina; four brothers, James Calvin Ferguson of Patrick County, Butch Ferguson of Collinsville, Buster Ferguson of Fieldale and Bruce Ferguson of Martinsville; two sisters, Faye Fontaine of Collinsville and Darlene Lovell of Bassett; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service by the Rev. Joe Nunley. She and her nephew, Randall Ferguson, will be buried
at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren cemetery.
MIDGET H. MURPHY
Midget Helen Harris Murphy, 87, of Martinsville, died Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center.
She was born in Johnson City, Tenn., on December 8, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Ben Harris and Delena Belle Lucas Harris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie A. Murphy; and three sons, George B., Frank J. and Jimmy D. Murphy.
She previously worked at Hardee's, McDonald's and the Old Country Store. She had attended the True Church of Jesus Christ.
Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Murphy, Nancy C. Holliday and Mary Ruth M. Cressell, all of Martinsville, and Eva Darlene Rios-Morales of Greensboro, N.C.; five sons, Leroy Murphy of Martinsville, Charles W. Murphy of Ridgeway, Chester J. Murphy of Stuart, David R. Murphy of Martinsville and Mark Shawn Murphy of Lynchburg; two sisters, Mattie McFalls of Asheville, N.C., and Merle Smith of Solomons, Md.; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett by Minister David Cuthbertson and Pastors David Bishop and Bobby Harris. Burial was in Old Well Christian Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brian Murphy, Jason Hammock, Rob Hiatt, Rick Champigny, Ricky Champigny, Keith Willingham, Kenneth Burgart, Joe Harris, Stacy Harris and Danny Murphy.
CLYDE B. NELSON
Clyde Brooks Nelson, 79, of Abram Penn Hwy., Stuart (Critz community), died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Henry County on June 1, 1929 and was a son of the late Otis P. and Paulie Cooper Nelson.
Nelson was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where he had served as a district steward, chairman of the building committee, usher, chairman of trustees, parsonage trustee, church lay-leader, president of United Methodist Men, building committee, finance committee and the nominations and personnel committees.
He was also a former president of the Critz Ruritan Club. He was retired as a carpenter and brick mason from Ralph B. Nelson Construction Company.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Bryant Nelson of the home; one daughter, Bea N. Ammons of Harrisonburg; two sons, Ralph B. Nelson and H. C. Nelson, both of Stuart; one sister, Becky Sanderson of Greensboro; three brothers, Wilford Nelson of Tazewell, Warren Nelson of Patrick Springs and Flemon Nelson of Salem; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Community Funeral Home in Stuart. The Rev. Sarah Doss and Dr. Joseph "Joey" McNeill officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Chad Ammons, Wesley Ammons, Shane Nelson, Dylan Nelson, Barry Collins, Richard Scala, Wilbur Walker and Bobby Joyce.

LINNIE R. OLIVER
Linnie Ridinger Oliver, 74, of Bassett, died Sunday, February 1, 2009, at her home.
She was born June 22, 1934, in Franklin County and was a son of the late Otto K. Ridinger Sr. and Ida Hylton Ridinger. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, John W. Hutchens; four brothers, Lilbourne Ridinger, Otto K. Ridinger Jr., Everette E. Ridinger and Joseph A. Ridinger; and a sister, Lucille R. Moore.
She was a graduate of Woolwine High School and was a member of First Baptist Church of Bassett. She retired from DuPont with 40 years of service.
Surviving are her husband, Henry Oliver of the home; three sons, Terry Hutchens of Lynchburg, Tony Hutchens of Roanoke and Tracy Hutchens of Bassett; three sisters, Betty Willard of Bassett, Ann Martin of Martinsville and Dotty Griffith of Woolwine; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Bassett by the Rev. Lew Bennett. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Patrick County.
