Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

GARY W. MABERY
Gary Wayne Mabery, 51, of Meadows of Dan, died Monday, March 9, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmond Mabery, and a brother, Glen Dale Mabery.
Surviving are his mother, Glenna Mabery; one daughter, Tiffany Mabery and Adam Wilkinson; one son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Stacy Mabery; three sisters, Lois Mabery, Shirley Moran and Rachel Goad; two grandsons, Jamie Mason Mabery and Adyn Patrick Wilkinson; two stepgrandsons, Tracy Adam Glisson and Sean Wilkinson; any nieces and nephews; a special sister, Hilda Collins; and a special sister-in-law Joyce Turman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Dalton officiating. Burial will follow at the Willis Cemetery.

MYRTLE A. NEWMAN
Myrtle Alene "Kate" Newman, 91, of Lambsburg, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at her home.
She was born April 17, 1917 in Carroll County and was a daughter of the late John and Rose Bobbitt Felts. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Buford Newman; a son, Garnett Newman; a daughter-in-law, Sudie Jo Newman; three sisters; three brothers; and a half brother.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Annie Isom of Mount Airy, N.C., Delma Bryant of Lambsburg and Hazel and Ritchie Gunnell of Cana; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Kathleen Newman of Fries, Glenn and Tammy Newman of Stuart, and Merle and Sandra Newman of Cana; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Chestnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery by the Revs. Wes Mosteller and Brian Shupe.
The family would like to express a special thanks to two wonderful caregivers, Melissa Upchurch and Lucretia Edwards.

POSIE W. SMITH
Posie "Willard" Smith, 84, of Ridgeway, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at his home.
He was born in Stokes County, N.C., on November 25, 1924 and was a son of the late Charlie O. and Mattie Poore Smith. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Ramsey Smith; and a brother, Kenneth Smith.
He graduated from Sandy Ridge High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Southern Philippines and the Pacific Theater, where he attained the rank of technical sergeant and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars.
He retired as a rural mail carrier at the Ridgeway Post Office, and was a member of the VFW. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir, and he was a bluegrass music fiddle player with the Virginia Bluegrass Boys band.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Campbell Smith of the home; one daughter, Vicki Adams of Greer, S.C.; one son, Jody Smith of Oak Hill; one stepson, Douglas Campbell of Charlottesville; two sisters, Gracie Joyce of Stoneville, N.C., and Inice Reynolds of Patrick Springs; one brother, Danny Smith of Madison, N.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Hillcrest Baptist Church by Pastor Doug Ramsey. Burial, with military honors, was in Roselawn Burial Park.

WILLIAM R. COLLINS
William Russell "Rusty" Collins, 17, of Stuart, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on September 3, 1991 and was a son of the late William Jimmy Collins and Barbara Massey Hubbard Collins of the home.
He was a special education student at Patrick County High School, and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one brother, David Wayne Hubbard of the U.S. Air Force; his grandparents, Hazel and Clyde Massey of Stuart and William and Gladys Collins of Patrick Springs; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. George Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Clyde and Hazel Massey.

WILLIAM L. GILLEY
William Lester Gilley, 88, of Bassett, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
Born August 7, 1920 in Patrick County, he was a son of the late Willie Green Gilley and the late Jenny Smallwood Gilley. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Henry Gilley and Pat Gilley; and four sisters, Mary Deal, Becky Cassell, Martha Sowers, and Sally Gilley.
Surviving are his wife, Lalah Gilley of the home; one son, Danny Gilley of Bassett; three daughters, Rodaliah "Sissy" Rorrer, Phyllis Spicer, and Brenda Baliles, all of Bassett; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A private burial will be held at Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of donor's choice.
Arrangements were by Bassett Funeral Service.

JAMES E. HUGHES
James Edward Hughes, 66, of Seattle, Wash., and formerly of Patrick County, died Monday, April 6, 2009, in Redding, Calif.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Moody Funeral Home of Stuart.

DALE H. POWELL
Dale H. Powell, 75, of Franklin County, died Wednesday April 1, 2009, after a brave battle with cancer.
He was born May 18, 1933 and was a son of the late John and Ina Powell. He was also preceded in death by his son, Anthony Powell; twin brother, Dillard Powell; and another brother, Brewster Powell.
He grew up in Patrick County and later served four years in the U.S. Navy. He began his career in the building business with Continental Homes. In 1965 he started Twin Ford Sales in Stuart, until 1980 when he went to work at Mod-U-Kraf Homes as executive vice president. He retired as president in 2004.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Shirley Powell; two sons, Jeff Powell and wife Carrie and Bradley Powell and wife Tracey; and five grandchildren. Graveside services were held Sunday at Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church cemetery in Patrick County.
Memorial contributions are being accepted by Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church in care of Tina Tatum of Patrick Springs, Va. 24133 or to Carilion Hospice Services at 180 Floyd Avenue Rocky Mount, Va. Arrangements were by Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount.

GLADYS Q. PUCKETT
Gladys Quesinberry Puckett, 95, of Twin Oak Road, Ararat, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at her home.
She was born January 15, 1914 in Carroll County and was a daughter of the late Waller Edmond and Gillie Frances Hendricks Quesinberry. She was also preceded in death by her husband,Dunkley W. Puckett; a sister, Beulah Sowers; and four brothers, Clive Quesinberry, Herbert Quesinberry, Cecil Quesinberry, and Hayden Quesinberry.
She was a a homemaker and attended Doe Run Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, A.G. and Conelia Puckett and Montague and Juanita Puckett, all of Ararat; four grandchildren and their spouses, Teresa and Ronald Marshall and Dale and Debra Puckett, all of Ararat, Keith and Barbara Puckett of Statesville, N.C., and Dean and Ginger Puckett of White Plains, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Pauline Wood of Vesta, and Ila Mae and Ralph Hall and Glennis Bowman, all of Ararat.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Doe Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Vaughan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

MARGARET W. VIA
Margaret Wray Via, 72, of Bassett and Blue Ridge Manor, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at Stanleytown Healthcare.
She was born August 13, 1936, in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Moir and Edith Wray. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Carl W. Via.
She retired from DuPont. She was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school, worked with the youth and served on the social committee.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Via David of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, J. Gary Via of Martinsville and Ronald L. Via of Martinsville; one sister, Linda W. Craddock of Bassett; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Blackberry Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. G.H. Vaughan Jr. Burial was in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bobby Joyce, Tommy Joyce, David Adams, Bryan Adams, Wesley Adams, Moyer Merrima, Kevin Adams and Dean Teague.
Memorial contributions may be made to Blackberry Baptist Church, 3241 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett, Va. 24055 or to Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

MATTIE T. VIA
Mattie Tilley Via, 89, of Bassett, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center.
She was born in the Stella community on June 4, 1919 and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Tilley and Sally Ruth Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elder John Kermit Via; two sisters, Emma Martin and Lena Wood; and five brothers, Noel Tilley, Hughes Tilley, Homer Tilley, Lemmie Tilley and Harvey Tilley.
She was a member of Old Center Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet V. Bobbitt of Hampton and Judy Ruth Via of Bassett; four grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett Chapel, by Elder Mike Young. Burial was in the Via family cemetery.

ROY R. YORK
Roy Rueben York, 81, of Lowgap, N.C., died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Universal Health Care in King, N.C.
He was born October 25, 1927 in Carroll County and was a son of the late Charlie John and Mazie Surratt York. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Letcher Benge; a sister, Annie Edwards; and two brothers, C.L. York and Alvin York.
He was a retired farmer and of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Robert Farmer of Lowgap and Deanna and Ralph Benge Sr. of Mount Airy, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis S. "Steve" and Karen Lyons of Lowgap; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lannie Lorson of Cuyahoga Falls, Oh., Dina Hull of Lambsburg, and Joy Jones of Stuart; two brothers, Franklin York and Claude York, both of Lambsburg; and a special friend, Peggy Jo Sprinkle of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Elder Arwood Edwards officiating. Burial was in the Chestnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chestnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Leona Childress, 205 Fowler Road, Dobson, NC 27017.

VELMA V. REDD
Velma W. Via Redd, 85, of Martinsville, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Patrick County on March 9, 1923 and was a daughter of the late Dennis Lee Via and Hattie Smith Via Finney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Redd; two brothers, Curtis Via and Henry Via; and two sisters, Lucille Hill and Ossie Albury.
She was a member of Mt. Olive No. 1 Christian Church, the CWF and the Preston Community Center.
Surviving are one daughter, Teresa Harkness of Martinsville; one sister, Ada Wimbush of Martinsville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Mt. Olive East Christian Church by the Revs. Carrol Rucker and Kenneth Davis. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church before the funeral.
Arrangements are by Hines Funeral Service.

EMMA M. SCOTT
Emma Mae Scott, 79, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born June 5, 1928, in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Roby Hoston and Roxie Zina Hall Scott. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mettie S. Gwynn and Lila S. Comer; two infant sisters; and a brother, Gilbert R. Scott
She retired from Pine State Knitwear with more than 40 years of service and was a member of Mount Bethel Moravian Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Viola S. Martin and Isabel S. Golding, both of Mount Airy; one brother, Leonard Scott of Roanoke; seven nieces; three nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral service was conducted Friday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy by the Rev. Arlis Thomas Burial was at Skyline Memory Gardens. Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

CALVIN H. VIA
Calvin H. Via, 90, of Bassett, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart, following an extended illness.
He was born October 11, 1917 in Spray, N.C. (now a part of Eden, N.C.), and was the youngest of the 10 children of the late Pinkney Via and Betty Ruth Via Via. He was also preceded in death by his wife Polly, and eight brothers and sisters.
His career ranged from construction contractor to brick mason to professional photographer. He and his wife established and operated The Portrait House Studio for many years until her death in 1996.
Surviving are one sister, Lillian Luther of Eden; one son, Harold Via of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson; one great-grandson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Blackberry Baptist Church with Dr. G.H. Vaughn and the Rev. Glenn Voss officiating. Burial will be in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Arrangements are by Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett.
