Beverly Reid Bowman

Beverly Reid Bowman, 69, of Athens, Ga., formerly of Petersburg, died February 2, 2005.
She was the daughter of the late Lester I. and Mary Batts Bowman, and was a school teacher.
Survivors include a brother, Douglas V. Bowman of South Boston; a sister, Anne B. Erickson of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a nephew, Matthew Todd Bowman of Richmond.
A memorial service for Ms. Bowman is planned for later in February in Athens.

A private burial will be in Petersburg.

Barbara Jean Link Cunningham

Barbara Jean Link Cunningham, 53, of 1068 Carrington Trail, Alton died in Roxboro, N.C.
Mrs. Cunningham was born on April 26, 1951, the daughter of Henry Link and Nannie Murphy Link and was a member of Mayo Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Valincia Cunningham of Durham, N.C.; one son, Marcus Link of Alton; her parents; two sisters, Bonnie Carrington and Deloris Green, both of South Boston; four brothers, Barry Link of Durham, Willie Link, Michael Link and David Link, all of Alton; three grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Thelma Link.
Memorial services for Mrs. Cunningham will be held tomorrow, February 5, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. Lawrence Wilkerson officiating.
The family is receiving friends at the home.

Dewey Overton Owen

Dewey Overton Owen, 100, of 3211 Volens Road, Nathalie died January 31, 2005 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Owen was born in Halifax County on January 12, 1905, the son of the late John Overton Owen and Kate Palmer Owen and was married to the late Aileen West Owen. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Thomas Owen White and husband, William J. White Sr., of Scottsburg; one son, John Overton Owen of Nathalie; one brother, Howard Watkins Owen of Crystal Hill; five grandchildren, William Joseph White Jr. of Scottsburg, John Christopher Owen of Kernersville, N.C., David Ashley Owen of Thailand, Michael James Owen of Glendora, Calif., and Stacie Jolene Owen of Wilmington, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Christina Nicole Owen and Melissa Marie Owen, both of Wilmington.
Other than his wife and parents, Mr. Owen was preceded in death by four sisters, Alma Owen Martin, Pearl Owen Martin, Suzanna Owen Anderson and Jessie Owen Haney.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, February 5, at 2 p.m. at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Sisk and Lee Roy Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening, February 4, from 7:00 until 8:30 at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Tommie Henry Wade Sr.

Tommie Henry Wade Sr., 86, of 1174 Red Level Church Road, Scottsburg died February 2, 2005 at his home.
Mr. Wade was born May 26, 1918, the son of Addie Wade and Ida Mae Lacks Wade and was married to the late Dorothy Evelyn Lacks Wade.
Survivors include two children, Lucy Mae Wade Berkley, Tommie Henry Wade Jr. and his wife, Barbara, all of Clover; 11 grandchildren, Jon Paul Berkley, Sonja Berkley, Charity Dyer, Joshua Wade, Caleb Wade, Nicole Scarberry, Matthew Wade, crystal Clary, Hope Wade, Daniel wade and Tommie Henry Wade III; 17 great-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law, Ruth N. Wade, Bessie and Stover Lacks, Bertha Womack, Frances King, and Sallie Mae Lacks; one brother-in-law, Berkley Lacks; and his special nurse, Annie Traynham.
Mr. Wade was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary W. Duffey; and two brothers, Larnie and Roy Wade.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home tonight, February 4, from 7:00 until 8:30, and other times at the home.
Funeral services for Mr. Wade will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, February 5, at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in Red Level Independent Church of God Cemetery.

Hannah Clay Hudson
Hannah Clay Hudson, 81, of 115 North Main Street, Clover, died July 3, 2006, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hudson was born January 6, 1925, the daughter of the late Zim Clay and Carrie Wallace Clay, and was first married to the late Frank Conner, and then to the late J.D. Hudson. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church and a former seamstress with Jonbil Garment Factory.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Conner Newcomb and Wanda H. Lacks, both of Clover; one son, Marshall Monroe Hudson of Alton; seven grandsons, Tony Conner, Dwayne Conner, Timmy Newcomb, Ray Newcomb, Roger Hudson, Jeffery Martin, and Chris Hudson; three granddaughters, Angie N. Lankford, Dana Newcomb and Wendy Hudson; and 12 great-grandchildren. Three sons, Robert and Danny Hudson and Lee Conner; one granddaughter, Wendy Hudson; and one beloved grandson, Nick Hudson, also preceded Mrs. Hudson in death.
Funeral services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, July 6, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Courtney Coffer officiating. Burial will follow in the Clover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening, July 5, from 7:00 until 8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Wanda H. Lacks, 14211 James D. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg.

Joan “J” E. Pass (2006)
A memorial service for Ms. Joan “J” E. Pass will be held at Somerset, on Hamilton Boulevard, on Friday at 2 p.m.
Ms. Pass, of South Boston, died Thursday at Somerset.
She was born in England and received her nursing degree from The Royal Infirmary, Sheffield Training School for Nurses.
An extensive traveler, Ms. Pass, lived in England, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia before coming to the United States.
She was employed at Laird Memorial Hospital in Montgomery, West Virginia, from 1958 to 1962.
From 1962 to 1974, she was the Nurse Educator at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong.
After coming to South Boston, Ms. Pass was employed as a registered nurse from 1976 to 1989 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Stella Frances Rogers Baird
Funeral services for Mrs. Stella Frances Rogers Baird were held Sunday, June 11, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church on Parker Avenue in South Boston.
Viewing was at Dunn and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. At other times guests were received at the home of Corlys Ballou in South Boston.
Mrs. Baird, widow of the late Rev. W.J. Baird, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was 101.
She was born on May 3, 1905 in South Boston, the daughter of the late Lazarus Rogers and the late Sallie Faulkner Rogers.
She was a retired schoolteacher.
Mrs. Baird is survived by two sons, Dr. W. Edwyn Baird and Eldridge A. Baird, and a daughter, Corlys Ballou.
Mrs. Baird was preceded in death by two sons, Reginald Elbert and Rogers Alvin; a son-in-law, Frederick L. Ballou Sr.; a brother; two sisters; one grandson; Derrick Ballou; and one great-grandson.

Gene Hudson Hall
Funeral services for Gene Hudson Hall, of Scottsburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Visitation will be today at Brooks Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m., and at other times at the home, 1060 Welldrillers Trail.
Mrs. Hall, 78, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was a former secretary with Leggett Department Store and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hall was born May 14, 1928, a daughter of the late Elihue Hudson and Hallie Conner Hudson and was married to the late Herman Belt Hall Sr.
She is survived by her daughter, LaVerne H. Bennett and husband Roger, of Scottsburg; one son, H.B. Hall Jr. and wife Wanda, of Scottsburg; three granddaughters, DeLayne Sons, Sallie Snow and Elizabeth Hall; two grandsons, Roger Dale Bennett Jr. and Trey Hall.
Mrs. Hall was preceded in death two sisters, Christine Bradshaw and Alise Puryear, and one brother, Huell Hudson.

Drew Llewellyn
A memorial service for Drew Llewellyn, 23, of Charlotte, N.C., was held Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte. Brian Silldorff, director of Youth Ministries, officiated.
Mr. Llewellyn died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Duke University Medical Center.
He was born February 13, 1983 in Raleigh, a son of Boxley and Jane Llewellyn.
He graduated from the Hyde School in Woodstock, Conn., in 2002 and was a rising senior at East Carolina University.
He was a former Charlotte Soccer Club player and a proud member of the 82 Blue Team. He is remembered by friends and family as one who “approached life at full speed.”
In addition to his parents, Llewellyn is survived by two sisters, Melissa Katafiasz and husband Daniel of Fuquay-Varina and Mary Cox and husband Wade of Charlotte; a brother, Benjamin Llewellyn, a student in Melbourne, Australia; paternal grandmother Mrs. Robert B. Llewellyn of South Boston; maternal grandparents Mary Lee and Henry Brown of Purcellville, and friend Jordan Dean.

Lou Ella Coleman Cunningham
Funeral services for Mrs. Lou Ella Coleman Cunningham will be held today at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Wilkerson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Coleman Family Cemetery, 3158 Virgilina Road.
Mrs. Cunningham, 86, formerly of Halifax County, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in Oklahoma.
She was born in Halifax County on April 8, 1920 the daughter of the late Edward Coleman and Jannie O. Coleman and was married to the late Theodore Watkins and then to John Cunningham.
Mrs. Cunningham is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Taiwann Garland of Oklahoma; a son, Leroy C. Watkins of South Boston; four sisters, Jean Hairston of Springfield, N.Y., Roberta C. Jennings of Long Island, Gladiola Peerman of New York and Dolichos Hughes of Danville; a brother, Edward Asa Coleman of Manassas; two sisters-in-law, Mary S. Coleman of Virgilina and Maxine Coleman of Manassas; a brother-in-law, Otis Hughes of Danville; an aunt, Helen O Goode of Vaux Hall, N.J., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donnie Gray Anderson
Mr. Donnie Gray Anderson of Turbeville Road, Alton, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at his home.
He was 56.
Mr. Anderson was born August 14, 1949 in Halifax County, a son of the late Archer Acken Anderson Sr. and Lucille Snead Anderson.
He was employed by Goodyear and was a Vietnam-era Army veteran.
Mr. Anderson is survived by one daughter, Angela A. Reaves and husband Ray of South Boston; two sons, Mickey Allen Anderson Sr. and Travis Scott Anderson, both of South Boston; his mother, Lucille Snead Anderson of South Boston; two sisters, Georgia A. Sizemore of Halifax and Penny Lee A. Phillips of South Boston; one brother, Archer Acken Anderson Jr. of South Boston; and four grandchildren, Mickey Allen Anderson Jr., Daniel Keith Anderson, W. Cody Reaves and Amanda Marie Reaves, all of South Boston.
He was predeceased by his father, Archer Acken Anderson Sr.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Powell Funeral Home.

Iris Lee Glass Allen

Iris Lee Glass Allen, 78, of 1317 South Avenue, South Boston, died January 12, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Allen was born in Halifax County on September 27, 1925, the daughter of the late George B. Glass and Louise Cumby Glass and was married to the late William Jennings Allen. She was a member of First Baptist Church and worked as an aide at First Baptist Church Weekday School.

A memorial service was held at the church on January 15 with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon and Rev. Ralph Harrell officiating.

Survivors of Mrs. Allen include one daughter, Suzan Allen of South Boston; one son, William Thomas Allen II of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Katheryn Glass Davis of South Boston; two brothers, James E. Glass of South Hill and John B. Glass of Whiteville, N.C.; one grandson, William Joseph Allen; and one granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Allen. Mrs. Allen was also preceded in death by one brother, George C. Glass.

Thomas Edward Anderson Sr.

Thomas Edward Anderson Sr., 79, of Nathalie died February 10, 2004 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mr. Anderson was the son of the late Robert Lee Anderson and Bessie Wright Anderson and was married to Alma Ratliff Anderson. He was retired from Lane Company, a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove and was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of Nathalie; two sons, Thomas Edward Anderson Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Nathalie and Michael P. Anderson of Gretna; one daughter, Carol Anderson Wade and husband, Jimmy, of Halifax; four sisters, Janice Wright and husband, Ben, of Rustburg, Violet Lester and husband, Frank, of Halifax, Glennie Wade and husband, Boeling, of Nathalie and Josie Guill of Scottsburg; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service for Mr. Anderson will be held today, February 13 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Republican Grove with the Revs. Alfred Rimmer and Shelton Miles officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

George Litz Armbrister

George Litz Armbrister, 79, of Bluefield died January 11, 2004 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Armbrister was born in McDowell County the son of the late Cloyd M. Armbrister and Kathleen M. Sluss Armbrister.

He was a former band director at Northfork High School and Elkorn School and later was music director for many schools in Tazewell County.

Mr. Armbrister received his degree in music at Concord College where he also was a member of the Concord Commanders. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving on the U.S.S. Hancock and was in the Navy Band. He was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, Fincastle Country Club, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge and the Tazewell County Sportsmans Club.

Survivors of Mr. Armbrister include one sister, Ethel Elizabeth Wright of Nathalie; nieces, Janice Davis and husband, Lee Roy, of Nathalie and Lynette Wright of Daleville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Cloyd P. Armbrister; and one sister, Hazel Jordan.

Graveside services will be held tomorrow, January 17 at 1 p.m. at Maple Wood Cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Lee Roy Davis officiating.

Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield.

Frances Elizabeth Gordon Austin

Frances Elizabeth Gordon Austin, 79, died in Lynchburg March 7, 2004.

She was the wife of Willard Lee Austin, and the widow of James Haygood Stevens. Born November 1, 1924, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of the late Allie James and Mary Jane Yancey Gordon.

Mrs. Austin was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Donia Stevens Eley and husband, Randolph; a son, James Haygood Stevens Jr. and wife, Lavelva; stepchildren, Ronnie R. Austin and wife, Ginger, Bonnie A. Lewis; a sister, Mary Ann Royster; two brothers, James Gordon and Allie Franklin Gordon; grandsons, Hunter Randolph Eley, Brook Davis Eley; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Austin, Scott Lewis; and a special friend, Jenny Sunderman. Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Gordon.

A funeral service will be held today, March 10 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. John Thompson. Burial will be in Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery in Cluster Springs, at 2:30 p.m. by the Revs. Thompson and H.V. Conner.

Annie Elizabeth Robertson Bagby

Annie Elizabeth Robertson Bagby of South Boston died Thursday, Apr. 1, 2004 at Boston Commons.

She was 101.

Mrs. Bagby was a member of Mt. Cana United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 50 years.

She was a retired Leggett Department Store salesperson.

A funeral service was held Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jason Bryant officiating.

Burial was in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

A Virginia native, Mrs. Bagby was born April 22, 1902, a daughter of the late Christopher Moody Robertson and Emma Anderson Robertson, and was married to the late Bruce Talmadge Bagby.

She is survived by one son, C. Talmadge Bagby and wife Evelyn of Williamsburg, a daughter-in-law, Josie Bagby of Scottsdale, Arizona, three grandsons, Carlton Bagby of Columbia, S.C., Randy Bagby of Rapid City, S.D. and Rodney Bagby of Gloucester, Va., and two granddaughters, Debra B. Hastings of Scarborough, Maine, and Harriette B. Vanleliveld of Williamsburg, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bagby was preceded in death by two sons, Robert T. Bagby and James Birch Bagby.
